No. of bitstreams: 1 Regina de Lima Pires.pdf: 3946131 bytes, checksum: 7e16e9cb44e2ccaed3cf260229b718d8 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2016-06-27 / The consumer age brings enormous challenges to citizens. Permeated by multiple technological advances, mass media is among the protagonists of this cultural fabric. In turn, education is the most relevant location for the construction of dialogue and the formation of critical individuals. The challenges of the consumer age for the fields of communication / education will be among the points analyzed in this research, which seeks to study the cultural consumption of a a group of learners, residents of Vila Brasilândia, a neighborhood on the outskirts of the city of São Paulo. The study is oriented by theoretical references not only in communication, education, and consumerism, but also in the anthropology of consumption, history, economics, and sociology, in order to understand the cultural fabric in which the learners are involved. The research was carried out during a series of informal, educational encounters with the learners, who are from public schools and live in situations of poverty, racial discrimination, symbolic and physical violence. Throughout the entire research, we used a dialogical-communicative process with the learners in order to produce meaning and deal with language and their social, linguistic and ideological competencies. With children, youth and one adult, this group of learners has subjects in different phases of development, with different cognitive capacities and distinct family situations. During the two years of research with the group, the participants wrote texts and created drawings using four trigger words (your street, your neighborhood, your school, and your city). Using a specific methodology and seeking to demonstrate how the world they live in is editted, we produced a newspaper called “As notícias correm” (The news runs). In the end, the trajectory of the analysis points out just how aware these learners are of themselves and the world in which they live.

Sterl, Sebastian, Graupner, Marc 14 July 2014 (has links)
Nowadays, the social network site Facebook preferably serves as an appropriate medium of communication and as adviser on issues about daily life. Thus, recent social scientists have plenty of reasons to investigate the research field Facebook, the connections amongst its members, their cognitive structures and way of behaving which is frequently not intended. Through an online survey, including 1,358 German respondents, the influence of Facebook on educational participation and consumer behaviour is analysed. According consumer behaviour as dependent variable, Heider´s Balance Theory (1946), Bandura´s Social Cognitive Theory (1971, 1976, 1986), and Festinger´s Theory of Social Comparison Processes (1954), including theoretical continuations for each of these, are used. In order to derivate hypotheses for educational participation Marotzki´s Strukturale Bildungstheorie (1990), further extensions and Bandura’s Social Cognitive Learning Theory are taken. To sum up, tending to positively closed triads, relevant positive opinions of persons of comparison, and observing positively social signals from persons with a high status on Facebook significantly and positively influence consumer behaviour. Surprisingly, there is no significant influence from similarity to persons of comparison and observations of negative consumer´s experience. All hypotheses concerning educational participation could be confirmed: For instance, the more often a person gets new Facebook friends or the more often friends post visible educational aspects (i.e. newspaper articles or similar), the higher is educational participation on Facebook. These results, analysed by a regression analysis, are checked by an alternative method which is rarely used in that context. Using an artificial neural network (multilayer perceptron) a sensitivity analysis is conducted. Interestingly, the rank order of beta coefficients is almost reproduced. The existing study which was carried out at the Institute of Sociology in Leipzig is a pilot experiment in respect of both theoretical and methodical aspects. There are exploratively connections between social-psychological theory and consumer behaviour and educational participation on Facebook, supported by an extensive implementation of control variables.

Det akademiska berättigandet : En kvantitativ studie om svenska högskolestudenters förhållningssätt till högre utbildning / Academic Entitlement : A Quantitative Study of Attitudes toward Higher Education among Swedish University Students

Schelin, Gabriella, Ericson, Brigitte January 2019 (has links)
Current beliefs, expectations and norms among today's Swedish university students are meant to be characterized by the social changes, of which the academic approach to higher studies manifests differently to what it was done in the past (Arensmeier & Lennqvist Lindén, 2014). This is referred to the recent decades of increasing student volume and broadened recruitment from previously under-represented groups (Universitetskanslersämbetet, 2018). This has in turn been followed by friction in that the meeting between the pupil, teachers and education as a consequence of the earlier established expectation structure is gradually renegotiated (Olofsson, 2013), which is meant to be characterised by negative tendencies in relation to the education’s quality (Arensmeier & Lennqvist Lindén, 2014). The present study aimed to investigate how the problems can be explained in terms of Academic Entitlement among Swedish university students. With a Swedish translation of the Academic Entitlement Scale (Wasieleski et al., 2014), potential explanatory factors are pointed out by illustrating the current attitudes toward higher education among students. The result supported a preliminary validation of the Swedish translation of Academic Entitlement Scale, which reliability measured Cronbach’s α =.78 (n = 274) within a Swedish student population. Further on was an indication of a significant negative correlation between academic entitlement and study motives, based on interest regarding the subject which the student is involved in. In conclusion, the study gives prominence to that explaining factors underlaying Swedish students approach to higher studies can be obtained by using academic entitlement, of which the study’s discussion is conducted around the result’s possible implications as well as which course of action future research suggestively might apprehend in their further research of the field.

In this sense, the focus of the current research was to understand thevalues that are important in the choice of international schools in the context of the city of Riode Janeiro, exploring the British School. To the extent that value creation is the mission ofmanagement and, knowing that, in addition to all demands and reasons for existence, international schools are business, as well as educational institutions, it becomes imperative tounderstand what value matters for the consumer of these schools, against the value proposedby the educational institution. A qualitative research was carried out to analyze, according tothe view of the British School and the parents who have their children enrolled, what valueswould differentiate it in the local market of Rio de Janeiro. Data collection was done throughfocus groups and individual interviews, involving 13 parents of students and individualinterviews with two professionals of the School who occupy strategic positions for thepurposes that interest here. Based on the results presented and the corresponding analysis, there is a misalignment between what the international school offers and what parents buy asintangible good in education. In the voice of the school, the offer is clear: English proficiency, curriculum and access to international universities. On the side of families, proficiency in theEnglish language is a core value that translates into symbolic and social capital.
