Instructional eLearning technologies for the vision impaired

Murray, Iain January 2008 (has links)
The principal sensory modality employed in learning is vision, and that not only increases the difficulty for vision impaired students from accessing existing educational media but also the new and mostly visiocentric learning materials being offered through on-line delivery mechanisms. Using as a reference Certified Cisco Network Associate (CCNA) and IT Essentials courses, a study has been made of tools that can access such on-line systems and transcribe the materials into a form suitable for vision impaired learning. Modalities employed included haptic, tactile, audio and descriptive text. How such a multi-modal approach can achieve equivalent success for the vision impaired is demonstrated. However, the study also shows the limits of the current understanding of human perception, especially with respect to comprehending two and three dimensional objects and spaces when there is no recourse to vision.

Desenvolvimento de video educativo para a aprendizagem do autocateterismo vesical intermitente / Development of an educational video on how to learn intermittent self-catheterization

Cibele Dias Cucick 26 February 2016 (has links)
Clean intermittent catheterization is currently the best treatment and it should be performed 4-6 times a day, during the entire lifetime, in order to protect the upper urinary tract and the acquisition of urinary continence. The rehabilitation of the affected people, by the use of self-catheterization is a challenge, which has to be faced to maintain autonomy, privacy, social inclusion and participation. Educational videos on self-catheterization are used in several countries because of its handling and wide accessibility via Internet. However, there are no videos concerning Brazilian context, considering the urinary catheters and catheterization techniques used in Brazil. This study aimed to develop and validate an educational video on how to perform intermittent self- catheterization in Brazilian context. It is a quantitative study, divided in two phases: The 1st phase including the evaluation of existing public educational videos with the aim to learn the intermittent self-catheterization using a clean technique and the 2nd phase with the development and validation of an educational video with the objective to learn the self-catheterization. Educational videos have been gathered searching the keyword \"self- catheterization\" on a video- sharing Website. Three judges of the healthcare area evaluated the videos. The development and validation process of the storyboard of the educational video used previously evaluated questionnaires. In these phases, respectively, 18 and 17 judges, who are experts in rehabilitation and/or health education took part. The first evaluation showed that only 3.5% of all videos available (172) on the website had learning self-catheterization as content in Brazilian context. Six videos were specific about self-catheterization, of which four had outdated or incorrect information and only two achieved an acceptable score. In the evaluation of the storyboard participated mainly female specialists (94.44%), aged between 30 and 60 years, of which 72.22% had a master\'s degree and 50% worked for more than five years in the area of rehabilitation. The judges rated the storyboard with 96.29% of the responses being \"agree\" or \"fully agree\" regarding the purpose of the video, 91.09% regarding the content, 98.12% in relation to the relevance, 75% regarding the ambience, 71 11% regarding the verbal language and 92.70% in relation to the query inclusion of topics. The production of the video used 3D technology and was supported by a specialized technical team. With regard to the validation of educational video, the video content was considered validated with 100% of the judges responded \"agree\" or \"fully agree\" on issues related to functionality, 86.27% for usability, 97.06% in the query efficiency, 100% on the visual technique, 94.11% to the environment query and 97.05% for the procedure. Regarding the educational video validation, it was considered validated with 100% of respondents \"agree\" or \"strongly agree\" on issues related to functionality, 86.27% respondents to the query usability, 97.06% related to efficiency, 100% in the visual technique, 94.11% to the environment and 97.05% for the procedure. Both, the quality of information and the teaching didactic of the educational video was evaluated positively, showing the importance of validation of educational materials. The ambition is to spread the educational video in different rehabilitation centers and universities, in order to share the knowledge and make it accessible to the society and the health professionals, especially those working the area of rehabilitation. In addition, the goal is to encourage and consolidate the methodological development of other educational videos in the healthcare area

This Master's thesis is situated in the field of Applied Linguistics and has aimed at analyzing the design (concept, idealization and form) of two Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs), namely Teleduc and Edmodo from the perspective of Bakhtin¿s architectural form with the contributions of the Multiliteracies Pedagogy, the didactic models of VLEs, the concept of Multimodality and Remediation. In the analysis we sought to understand how it configures the design of the two VLEs with their tools, how the design of the VLEs can collaborate for the use of different semiosis and how the concepts of Multimodality and Remidiation contributed to these analyzes. Grounded in Bakhtin's theory of architectural form, we understood that the dimensions of the genre practiced in the VLEs are directly related to their design, their architectural embodiment defended as the design of a VLE, which can propitiate Multiliteracies, can provide or not flexibility for achieving multisemiotic genre, common from the contemporary world. Also part of our theoretical lenses, we observed the acts of Remediation, the representation of a medium by another, from the traditional classroom environment to the digital one, which we still found the influence of the traditional presence-based school in the concept, idealization and form in the TelEduc VLE. Reflecting a tendency to conventionalization of standards based on the traditional classroom teaching curriculum, offering to TelEduc VLE with only alphabetic texts, which held much of the student interaction to information, which due to its design, little space was left for multimodal communication. We also observed that the acts of remediation for the TelEduc design was based on the traditional class, or in the relations of time and space (and power) of the 1.0 school, generating an architectural embodiment of the traditional school represented by its conventional genres and school literacies. The Edmodo in its architectural whole, we observed that the design model provides tools for the use of different language modes - text, graphics, sound, with static and dynamic images with an easy communication/interaction with other technological means. Its structure is based on the model of social networks, proposing a much more interactive learning process, and dialogical construction of collaborative intelligence distributed to different communities across the world. We conclude that virtual learning environments must in their design, provide different transformations in the mode of interaction with learning to establish a renewed sense of the past creating future directions, which approximate the reality experienced by the contemporary citizens and their new modes of meaning / Mestrado / Linguagem e Sociedade / Mestre em Linguística Aplicada

South African unit standards for sight-singing, realised in a multiple-media study package

Potgieter, Paul Stephanus 29 September 2004 (has links)
This research concerns the design of a multiple-media study package for sight-singing and how national standards for sight-singing can be realised by using this study package. Sight-singing is a skill which can be of great value for singers, choristers and other musicians. Unfortunately this skill has been sadly neglected in South African schools. The result is that a great percentage of society (and in particular, choristers) is not able to read music and then sing it. The researchers is responsible for sight-singing tuition at the Drakensberg Boys’ Choir School, which is the only choir school in South Africa. The ages of new choristers vary from 9 to 13 years and there is a considerable variation in their music backgrounds. It is therefore essential that every learner can work at his own pace to master sight-singing. The author did research on this subject to compile a sight-singing programme which will enable learners to reach a high standard of sight-singing while progressing at their own pace. By making a study of relevant literature, the author gathered information on sight-singing, reading, communication, educational media as well as Outcomes-Based Education and instructional design. The author formulated criteria for a sight-singing programme and for the use of educational media in such a programme. These criteria are used to evaluate seven different sight-singing programmes. The evaluation indicated to the researcher how other authors approached the subject. He identified the strong and weak points of every programme. The researcher designed a multiple-media study package for sight-singing according to Dick and Carey’s systems approach model for designing instruction (1996). The study package consists of a workbook, a textbook and two audio CDs. The author did action research by using the study package to teach sight-singing to the new choristers at the Drakensberg Boys’ Choir School. Various problems in the study package became clear while using it for teaching. The study package was amended a number of times to eliminate the shortcomings. This research indicates that sight-singing is not only possible when a competent teacher is present. Students can learn sight-singing independently by using a multiple-media programme. / Thesis (DMus)--University of Pretoria, 2005. / Music / unrestricted

Learning Wakanda: Assessing the Responses of African-American Children and Their Caregivers toward Concordant Educational Media

Coleman, Cameron L. 01 January 2020 (has links) (PDF)
Screen-based educational media, as an extension of the schooling process whose history has mirrored brick and mortar institutions, have traditionally espoused narratives of Eurocentricity, shifting relatively recently to multicultural yet simultaneously raceless narratives. While many viewers have learned from and been inspired by these media, the enthusiastic response to the film Black Panther (2018), as demonstrated by financial earnings and sustained social media energy, revealed an intense yearning in the Black community for media positively centering the strengths and successes of Black lives. Launched from the sociocultural fervor for Black concordance in media, and extending concordance into the educational media landscape, this qualitative study sought to assess responses from African-American children, ages 3-8, to educational media concordant to them, and contextualize these responses in recognition of race socialization patterns within the home. Children’s responses to the media ranged from acknowledgment of skin color as well as hair texture and style, to full identification with and enthusiasm for animated protagonists. Caregivers responded positively to the samples while self- reporting varying degrees of race socialization. These responses demonstrated promising potential for identification with concordant educational media based on phenotypic resemblance, particularly for children approximately 8 years of age.

Pořad Wifina v kontextu mediální gramotnosti a vzdělávání médii / The television series Wifina in the context of media literacy and education through media

Novotná, Helena January 2016 (has links)
This diploma thesis is an addition to the discussion on media literacy development, which also deals with the effectiveness of children's education via a television program. The work offers a brief content overview of public broadcasting television channel ČT:D, focusing on shows that enlighten the viewers about facts from various fields (which are thus regarded educational). The television program Wifina is described in detail and is the center of later research. The first part of this document defines the factors that affect reception of information from television broadcast. The thesis introduces different variations of key media literacy concepts, including the specific way they are handled in the Czech setting. The objective of this work is to determine, whether the show Wifina enhances development of media literacy through its content, and whether this content helps to broaden general knowledge and education of the viewers. Based on content analysis of the program and subsequent qualitative comparative analysis of two groups of children - viewers and non-viewers - the author ascertains, whether Wifina educates its viewers about media-related subjects, as well as other areas. Evaluation of the research offers not only specific cases of broadcast (non-)affected viewers, but also a debate on...

ABSTRACT By mostly assisting young people of the popular classes, the public-school system can play a strategic role in reducing the barriers imposed by historical and cultural conditions, resulting from social and economic inequalities, which limit the greater potential of technological appropriations by the popular classes teenagers. The challenge is not only to include public schools and their communities in the technological world by distributing equipment, but to contribute to the construction of pedagogical, technical and political bases that allow and stimulate critical, contextualized and collaborative technological appropriations inside and outside school. This research had as its object of study the “Rede Anísio Teixeira”, which is the Educational Media and Technologies Dissemination Program of Bahia’s Public School System, in which the researcher acts as an educator and manager. Through a case study inspired by the critical and involved “ethnoresearch” and the experience research proposed by Macedo (2009, 2010 and 2015), he sought to understand the experiences lived by educators in the processes of management, formation, production and sharing of Free Educational Media and Technologies developed in the Program. In considering the experiences as the main element of its exercise of understanding, the research brought to the center of the discussion the human relationships, their understandings and implications. Experiences lived in the context of a government program, guided by a proposal of technological appropriation in the teaching and learning processes, which is inspired by criticality, contextualization and collaboration. Although it is a technological dissemination program, the experiences of “Rede Anísio Teixeira” educators have shown that technologies need not be understood as an end in themselves, but as languages that foster relationships, permeated by challenges and potentialities, opportunities and threats, that can be appropriated by the school community as political devices of social, historical and cultural affirmation.
