Görke, Uwe-Jens, Bucher, Anke, Kreißig, Reiner 16 December 2008 (has links) (PDF)
Following generally accepted axioms and assumptions the authors developed a phenomenological, thermodynamically consistent material model for large anisotropic elastoplastic deformations based on a substructure concept. The material model originally includes a stress relation in rate formulation, evolutional equations for the internal variables modeling the hardening behavior, and the yield condition. Due to the necessary time discretization solving the initial value problem (IVP) this approach is associated with an incremental stress computation. It will be shown that, within this context, the accuracy of stress values essentially deteriorates with increasing load steps. Consequently, the authors substitute the usual stress relation including the symmetric plastic strain tensor of right Cauchy-Green type instead of the stress tensor into the set of unknown constitutive variables. Stresses are explicitly computed from a hyperelastic material law depending on the elastic strain tensor. Furthermore, as an alternative to the plastic strain tensor the solution of the IVP considering an evolutional equation for the plastic part of the deformation gradient has been studied. This procedure simplifies the mathematical structure of the system to be solved as well as the computation of substructure-based variables which are suitable for the analysis of texture development. The presented numerical strategies were implemented into an in-house FE-code. Some examples illustrating their accuracy, stability as well as efficiency are discussed.

Adaptive finite elements for a contact problem in elastoplasticity with Lagrange techniques

Wiedemann, Sebastian 18 March 2013 (has links)
The topic of this thesis is the derivation and analysis of some finite element schemes for a contact problem in elastoplasticity. These schemes are based on the formulation of the models as saddle point problems and use finite element spaces of arbitrary polynomial degrees. In this thesis, these new approaches with higher-order finite elements are shown to be well defined and convergent. Moreover, some a~priori estimates on the rates of convergences are proven. The use of Lagrange multipliers in the saddle point formulation yields a coherent approach to reliable a~posteriori error estimates for the proposed higher-order schemes. Additionally, the Lagrange multipliers are used to show the equivalence of the errors of the stresses and the energies, for low order finite elements using triangular or quadrilateral cells. For the first time, this allows for a proof of convergence for quadrilateral-based adaptive finite elements. Furthermore, the approach based on triangular cells is shown to be of optimal convergence. The theoretical findings are confirmed by numerical experiments.

Scheffler, Christian 24 March 2009 (has links) (PDF)

Bundles of Semi-flexible Cytoskeletal Filaments

Strehle, Dan 30 June 2014 (has links) (PDF)
Being the most basic unit of living organisms, the cell is a complex entity comprising thousands of different proteins. Yet only very few of which are considered to play a leading part in the cell’s mechanical integrity. The biopolymers actin, intermediate filaments and microtubules constitute the so-called cytoskeleton – a highly dynamic, constantly restructuring scaffold endowing the cell not only with integrity to sustain mechanical perturbations but also with the ability to rapidly reorganize or even drive directed motion. Actin has been regarded to be the protagonist and tremendous efforts have been made to understand passive actin networks using concepts from polymer rheology and statistical mechanics. In bottom-up approaches isotropic, homogeneous actin-gels are well-characterized with rheological methods that measure elastic and viscous properties on different time scales. Cells, however, are not exclusively isotropic networks of any of the mentioned filaments. Rather, actin alone can already be organized into heterogeneous and highly anisotropic structures like bundles. These heterogeneous structures have only come into focus recently with theoretical work addressing bundle networks. and, in the case of the worm-like bundle theory, individual bundles. This work aims at characterizing bundles and bundle-crosslinker systems mechanically in two complementary approaches – in the time as well as in the frequency domain. In addition, it illuminates a bundle formation mechanism that leads to bundle networks displaying higher ordering.

Stochastic unfolding and homogenization of evolutionary gradient systems

Varga, Mario 12 August 2019 (has links)
The mathematical theory of homogenization deals with the rigorous derivation of effective models from partial differential equations with rapidly-oscillating coefficients. In this thesis we deal with modeling and homogenization of random heterogeneous media. Namely, we obtain stochastic homogenization results for certain evolutionary gradient systems. In particular, we derive continuum effective models from discrete networks consisting of elasto-plastic springs with random coefficients in the setting of evolutionary rate-independent systems. Also, we treat a discrete counterpart of gradient plasticity. The second type of problems that we consider are gradient flows. Specifically, we study continuum gradient flows driven by λ-convex energy functionals. In stochastic homogenization the derived deterministic effective equations are typically hardly-accessible for standard numerical methods. For this reason, we study approximation schemes for the effective equations that we obtain, which are well-suited for numerical analysis. For the sake of a simple treatment of these problems, we introduce a general procedure for stochastic homogenization – the stochastic unfolding method. This method presents a stochastic counterpart of the well-established periodic unfolding procedure which is well-suited for homogenization of media with periodic microstructure. The stochastic unfolding method is convenient for the treatment of equations driven by integral functionals with random integrands. The advantage of this strategy in regard to other methods in homogenization is its simplicity and the elementary analysis that mostly relies on basic functional analysis concepts, which makes it an easily accessible method for a wide audience. In particular, we develop this strategy in the setting that is suited for problems involving discrete-to-continuum transition as well as for equations defined on a continuum physical space. We believe that the stochastic unfolding method may also be useful for problems outside of the scope of this work.

The small-deformation limit in elasticity and elastoplasticity in the presence of cracks

Gussmann, Pascal 25 June 2018 (has links)
The small-deformation limit in presence of a given crack is considered in three distinct continuummechanical models. First, a purely static finite-strain elasticity model is considered in the limit of small loading, where the constraint of global injectivity is shown to converge in the sense of Gamma-convergence to a local constraint of non-interpenetration along the crack. Second, finitestrain deformation plasticity based on the multiplicative decomposition of the strain tensor is shown to Gamma-converge to linearized deformation elastoplasticity with crack conditions. Third, the rate-independent evolution of elastoplasticity is considered with a generalized class of global injectivity constraints for the finite-strain model. On the one hand, neglecting the constraints the evolutionary Gamma-converge to linearized elastoplasticity is proven. On the other hand, a conjecture is made, subject to which the evolutionary Gamma-convergence with constraints still holds.

Approximation of nonsmooth optimization problems and elliptic variational inequalities with applications to elasto-plasticity

Rösel, Simon 09 May 2017 (has links)
Optimization problems and variational inequalities over Banach spaces are subjects of paramount interest since these mathematical problem classes serve as abstract frameworks for numerous applications. Solutions to these problems usually cannot be determined directly. Following an introduction, part II presents several approximation methods for convex-constrained nonsmooth variational inequality and optimization problems, including discretization and regularization approaches. We prove the consistency of a general class of perturbations under certain density requirements with respect to the convex constraint set. We proceed with the study of pointwise constraint sets in Sobolev spaces, and several density results are proven. The quasi-static contact problem of associative elasto-plasticity with hardening at small strains is considered in part III. The corresponding time-incremental problem can be equivalently formulated as a nonsmooth, constrained minimization problem, or, as a mixed variational inequality problem over the convex constraint. We propose an infinite-dimensional path-following semismooth Newton method for the solution of the time-discrete plastic contact problem, where each path-problem can be solved locally at a superlinear rate of convergence with contraction rates independent of the discretization. Several numerical examples support the theoretical results. The last part is devoted to the quasi-static problem of perfect (Prandtl-Reuss) plasticity. Building upon recent developments in the study of the (incremental) primal problem, we establish a reduced formulation which is shown to be a Fenchel predual problem of the corresponding stress problem. This allows to derive new primal-dual optimality conditions. In order to solve the time-discrete problem, a modified visco-plastic regularization is proposed, and we prove the convergence of this new approximation scheme.

Lifetime prediction for rocks

Li, Xiang 13 November 2013 (has links) (PDF)
A lifetime prediction scheme is proposed based on the assumption that the lifetime (time to failure) of rocks under load is governed by the growth of microstructual defects (microcracks). The numerical approach is based on linear elastic fracture mechanics. The numerical calculation scheme is implemented as a cellular automat, where each cell contains a microcrack with length and orientation following certain distributions. The propagation of the microcrack is controlled by the Charles equation, based on subcritical crack growth. The zone inside the numerical model fails if the microcrack has reached the zone dimension or the stress intensity factor of the crack reached the fracture toughness. Macroscopic fractures are formed by these coalesced propagating microcracks, and finally lead to failure of the model. In the numerical approaches, elasto-plastic stress redistributions take place during the forming of the macroscopic fractures. Distinct microcrack propagation types have been programmed and applied to the proposed numerical models. These numerical models are studied under different loading conditions. Numerical results with excellent agreement with the analytical solutions are obtained with respective to predicted lifetime, important parameters for the microcracks, fracture pattern and damage evolution. Potential applications of the proposed numerical model schemes are investigated in some preliminary studies and simulation results are discussed. Finally, conclusions are drawn and possible improvements to the numerical approaches and extensions of the research work are given.
