The relationship of the economic order to the moral ideal in the thought of Maritain, Brunner, Dewey, and Temple

Ruhlen, Ralph Lester January 1959 (has links)
Thesis (Ph.D.)--Boston University / The first aim of this dissertation is to trace the historical development of the concern of philosophers for Political Economy. The second aim is to explore the writings of four thinkers with differing philosophical and theological perspectives whose writings have illuminated the relationship of the economic order to the moral ideal: Maritain (neo-Thomist),Brunner (nee-orthodox), Dewey (naturalist), and Temple (Christian realist). What relationships can be discerned in their thinking about economic values? (1) There seems to be no particular correlation between the metaphysical position of these philosophers and their specific suggestions concerning economic values. (2) Differing views of reason, however, do seem to affect their suggestions about economic values. Brunner finds reason corrupted by sin, and therefore distrusts all human orders. Dewey trusts only scientific reasoning in the ordering of human values. Maritain and Temple have great confidence that the economic order can be vastly improved by the organization of values in accordance with a more comprehensive reason. [TRUNCATED]

______________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / One version of Artin's Conjecture states that for a homogeneous system with two diagonal equations of degree k, whose coe cients are integers, exists a nontrivial p-adic solution provided the number of variables is greater than 2 k2. In this paper, we show that the conjecture is true when the degree is 2T . 3 or 3T . 2, for T≥ 2.

Kakelugnar : en studie av Emil Petterssons kakelugnsmatriser / Historic tile stoves : the tile matrices of Emil Pettersson

Jansson, Emelie January 2013 (has links)
In recent centuries the Swedish Tiled Stove has varied in its design with an aesthetic evolutionary history that has not only followed the architectural and artistic ideals but also the taste in stove design. The heat source has varied depending on the regional traditions and where it was located within the country, but the inside of the construction was of a similar five channel system. The purpose of this paper is to study and compare the design of tile matrices made by Emil Petterson with other Swedish stoves.  The following questions will be addressed: What characterized the production of a small scale tile stove workroom during the years 1900-50? Which main styles can be described as Emil Pettersson’s ideal while producing his matrices? And finally, is it possible to study the tile stove matrices as objects of historical and cultural significance, and what difficult methodological issues might occur in the doing of it?  To answer these questions I will present the results of the documentation of Pettersson’s tile matrices with detailed historical categorizations and schedules. The conclusion shows that Pettersson as a stove builder and -producer was characterized by eclectic ideals and a design shape based on more liberal interpretations of contemporary trends. The studying of tile stove matrices showed that, despite its difficulties regarding the inverted shapes, it is a barer of great historical and cultural value and that it plays a key part in the historical context of tile stove ovens.

The Vocal Pedagogy of the Behnke Family: The Behnke Method

Stapleton, Megan 05 1900 (has links)
Emil Behnke was a highly esteemed vocal pedagogue of the late nineteenth century. Perhaps rare for the time, the art and science of teaching vocal methods of speech and singing was a Behnke family business, one that Emil shared with his wife and daughter, who were both named Kate. Indeed, Emil's daughter, Kate Emil Behnke, was equally regarded and valued in the field of vocal pedagogy, carrying her father's teachings into the twentieth century. Meanwhile, the elder Kate Behnke, wife to Emil and mother to Kate Emil, was responsible for administering and building upon her husband's innovative methods of speech therapy, establishing her own reputation as a speech healer. The Behnke family published no less than fourteen books, cumulatively. Largely forgotten today, the purpose of this document is to provide a comprehensive overview of the biography and the pedagogical methods and works of the Behnke family, and to contextualize these methods within the framework of trusted vocal pedagogy, both historic and current.

Emil Kraepelins Beiträge zur Schlafforschung

Becker, Katrin 31 August 2016 (has links) (PDF)

A plenitude humana e o cuidado integral na perspectiva de Viktor Frankl / ; logoterapia; fenomenologia existencial; antropologia médica; experimentum crucis; dissertações;

Maria Eugênia Calheiros de Lima 09 January 2012 (has links)

In particular, the aims were to study the anthropological and philosophical foundations of his thinking about the man, research the meaning of his Experimentum Crucis, and also clarify his Dimensional Ontology. The study used a qualitative methodology in existential phenomenological perspective, involving bibliographical research into those writings of Frankl and some of his principal interpreters which are relevant to the theme. The Critelli s analytical method was employed in seeking to understand Frankl s Experimentum Crucis. Conclusions reveal Augustinian and Thomist philosophical elements in Viktor Frankl's conception of "human fulfillment as self-transcendence, as well as shows strong influences of Max Scheler's axiology and Martin Heidegger's fundamental ontology. However, despite the influence of a range of authors with diverse epistemological perspectives, this study reveals the originality and internal unity of Frankl s thought about human / Este artigo teve como objetivo geral compreender a concepção do humano na perspectiva de Viktor Frankl.
