International Student Mobility and Internationalisation of Universities - The role of serendipity, risk and uncertainty in student mobility and the development of cosmopolitan mind-sets through knowledge and intercultural competence. Employability, students’ future mobility aspirations and the EU’s support of international student mobilityWeibl, Gabriel January 2014 (has links)
The background to this study lies in the discrepancy between the perceptions of international student mobility in the context of the internationalisation of higher education by the EU and universities on one hand and international students themselves in terms of their motivations to study abroad on the other hand. This is a comparative study based on three main case studies, of six universities in New Zealand, Oxford University in the UK and the Charles University in the Czech Republic. It explores the students’ experiences abroad in terms of their intercultural competence, the shaping of identities, the acquisition and transfer of knowledge, the possible forming of cosmopolitan mind-sets and empathy, perceptions of
employability and their future mobility aspirations. This thesis also considers the barriers and ‘push and pull’ factors of mobility, perceptions of risk and uncertainty in regards to mobility and the role of serendipity in student mobility, which has been overlooked in the literature on
mobility and migration.
The theoretical framework of the study builds on social capital theory, Europeanisation and the ‘do-it-yourself biography’ theory. The nature of this topic, however, suggested the employment of the concepts of globalisation, transnationalism and consideration of other
forms of capital, such as the total human capital, mobility capital and transnational identity capital.
This is predominantly a qualitative, mixed-method and longitudinal research project, which uses surveys, case studies, interviews and the data collecting tool called grounded theory. It triangulates data to support and enhance the analytical validity of the thesis.
This research concludes that student experiences abroad as well as the internationalisation efforts of universities and the EU would benefit from the introduction of education for global citizenship, which should focus on the intercultural competencies of students. The thesis suggests sociocultural elements for example the cosmopolitan mind-set can enhance the economic, academic and political rationales of internationalisation, such as employability.

Impact of multiple sclerosis on committed caring relationships: the experience of twelve spousal carepartners dealing with this "uninvited guest"Zuluaga, Beatrice Harrison January 2008 (has links)
This research study explores the perceived impact of multiple sclerosis on “carepartners” in committed caring relationships as the spousal roles change over time. Both quantitative and qualitative methods were used in this study of persons with MS and their spousal carers residing in Australia during ten months of recruitment. Varied recruitment methods were used including the internet. 263 expressions of interest were received, and 203 survey packets were returned with usable data (77%). The demographic instrument and 4 scales measuring mood, reciprocity, life satisfaction and functional wellness were subjected to descriptive statistical analysis. Results from the quantitative phase of the study supported many international epidemiological findings related to gender, age of onset, difficulty in obtaining a diagnosis in the light of vague early symptoms of MS, and high levels of depression in the study sample. The preliminary analysis suggested that these data should be analysed further in dyadic terms (a person with MS and their identified carer). Further inferential statistical analysis examined the data sub-set of ‘pairs only’ which helped to inform formation of a pool of couples in caring relationships from which was selected a sub-sample of 12 spousal dyads residing in Victoria for interview in the second phase of the study. / Emerging themes from narrative analysis (n=24 persons) revealed pressing concerns, personal strengths and coping strategies of interviewees. Two themes of special interest relating to (1) differing perceptions by ‘carepartners’ of the importance of cognitive changes to the dyadic relationship, and (2) expectations of health professionals are explored. Most respondents agreed that their expectations left much to be desired, suggesting that improvements could be made in the area of health care delivery to persons with MS, their carers and their families. There are implications for the development of a multidisciplinary, ongoing assessment, educational and support program for these persons. Further research is needed to define and expand the proposed role of a specialized key contact person to be a valuable ‘advocate’ in the delivery of timely health care resources throughout the disease trajectory.

Ledarskapets intelligens, empati, stress och resurser att bemästra stress hos personer i chefsposition / Leadership intelligence, empathy, stress and resources to master stress in chief positionsHallberg, Angela, Skog, Sandra January 2018 (has links)
A person in chief position plays an important role in respect to both the company and its employees. Ronthy's theory (2006, 2013) aims to highlight her view of the concept of "leadership intelligence" which consists of: emotional intelligence (EQ), rational intelligence (RQ) and mental intelligence (SQ). A test relating to measuring leadership intelligence has been developed; Leadership Intelligence Questionnaire (LIQ). The test is now in version 3; LIQ3. People in the Chief Position can be divided into two types using LIQ3: Leader and Manager. A leader is characterized by high emotional and spiritual intelligence, while a manager of high rationality. Based on Ronthy's theory, this study aims at examining the following issues: (a) Can LIQ3 distinguish between managers and leaders from the point of view of whether the company produces goods or focuses on services? (b) Do EQ and SQ co-exist positively with empathy? (c) Does the self-reliant stress differ between leaders and managers according to LIQ3? (d) Is there a positive link between EQ and useful coping resources? The participants were 131 in different positions (34% women) from four different organizations (M = 49 years, SD = 8), of whom 18% were senior executives, 62% middle managers and 21% group leaders. In addition to LIQ3, participants responded to questionnaires that measure self-perceived stress, empathy and coping resources. LIQ3 could not distinguish between managers and leaders by organizational type. EQ and SQ positively correlated with social and emotional coping resources. There were no significant differences in stress levels between managers and leaders. Various aspects of leadership skills are noted and questioned in today's organizations and its properties have been investigated and discussed in this study.

Electroencéphalographie synchrone de deux individus : peut-on appliquer la neuroimagerie à l'étude de l'interaction humaine ? / Synchronous Electroencephalography of two individuals : Can we apply neuroimaging to study human interaction?Chatel-Goldman, Jonas 23 June 2014 (has links)
This research aims at exploring the neural bases of social interaction with use ofelectroencephalography acquired simultaneously from multiple individuals (hyperscanning-EEG). Wedo so by contributing on three complementary aspects at a theoretical, methodological andexperimental level. First, we provide two theoretical frameworks that can guide and inform theanalysis of interpersonal synchronies. Our first frame focuses on the necessary conditions for brain-tobraincoupling to occur. Our second frame provides a taxonomy for social cognition and situatesexisting studies in the neuroscience of social interaction. Second, we advance on the methodologicalaspects by extending the analysis framework, thereby considering and benefiting from hyperscanning-EEG data. Specifically, we focus on Joint Blind Source Separation (JBSS), a novel signal processing toolthat can take into account brain-to-brain coupling in the estimation of cortical activity. We provide acomparative study of such algorithms on real-world hyperscanning-EEG data and we demonstratetheir appropriateness for analysis of joint neural data. Finally, we contribute experimentally with ahyperscanning-EEG study in which we investigate the effect of affective touch on interpersonalcoupling during a natural interaction. We show that touch can increase coupling of physiologicalactivities between romantic partners. This results supports an instrumental role of interactive touchfor affective communication and support in close relationships.

Kvalita nosného vztahu a zaměřenost na cíl jako účinný faktor v sociální práci / The quality of supporting relationship and aim directivity as a successful factor in social workŠICNEROVÁ, Věra January 2015 (has links)
The diploma thesis The quality of supporting relationship and aim directivity as a successful factor in social work was written by Šicnerová Věra, Faculty of Theology of the University of South Bohemia. The supervisor of the thesis is Lhotová Marie, PhDr. Ing. Ph.D. Key words: aim, emotions, client, indirect approach, Rogers, empathy, interaction, communication, conflict, social work, social worker, relationship. The diploma thesis describes the development of a social therapeutic relationship between a client and a social worker which is based on non - evaluating approach of the social worker and in the connection with a suitable follow-up aim. The information about the conditions of a quality relationship which is needed for communication between the client and the social worker in a social therapeutic relationship is included in the thesis. Dangers and inappropriate approaches which can ruin suitable selection and the realization of aim are mentioned too. The thesis defines vocational qualities of social workers which can make the relationship development easier. It also presents attributes of social workers and clients, which can on the contrary disrupt or thwart this development. The diploma thesis illustrates that the relationship between social workers and clients is a determinative factor for a successful definition and realization of the social therapeutic process aim.

Hanteringsriglyn vir beraders wat met adolessente in 'n multikulturele omgewing werk : `n Gestalt terapeutiese benaderingVan der Hoven, Marianne 28 February 2004 (has links)
Text in Afrikaans / The research was directed at setting up guidelines for the counsellor dealing with the adolescent in a multicultural environment. The supposition of the study was that the adolescent in a multicultural environment should be treated by the counsellor with cultural empathy, understanding and insight. This process should be free from stereotyping and prejudice.
Guidelines were set up using a combination of Gestalt philosophical principles, existing literature and semi-structured interviews with cultural therapy experts.
For the purpose of this study Thomas and Rothman's intervention research model was applied. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to gain information on the adolescent in therapy, which was combined with information found in literature in order to set up guidelines for counsellors.
The researcher concludes that the counsellor dealing with the adolescent in a multicultural environment, has to possess sufficient cultural knowledge, cultural efficiency and cultural empathy to achieve a successful theurapeutic outcome.
Guidelines for the counsellor who works with adolescents in a multicultural environment were set up successfully to bridge the current lack of knowledge in the field. / Social Work / M. Diac (Play Therapy)

A manual for basic relational skills training in psychotherapyTheron, Michael John 08 1900 (has links)
Training in psychotherapy needs to involve more than merely skills and techniques. The field of psychotherapy needs to involve more than the application of formulas in a modernistic framework. This study proposes an approach to training in psychotherapy where the emphasis is on the client and the therapeutic relationship.
Psychotherapy training should be an ongoing process and this study aims to facilitate and enhance that process for students. The study combines basic therapeutic skills and interpersonal psychotherapy to form a training programme referred to as the Basic Relational Skills Training (BRST) programme.
The first part of the study provides a historical perspective of basic therapeutic skills, followed by a review of the relevant literature. The second part of the study constitutes a possible format for a training manual for the proposed BRST programme.
The researcher hopes that the proposed BRST programme be utilised by trainers to assess the programme's efficacy. / Psychology / M.A. (Clinical Psychology)
