Employment in Sweden from the international students’ perspective

Every 30 th person on earth is living outside her/his home country. People migrate for different reasons, one of them being studies. Those who leave their home countries to pursue studies abroad are referred as international students. International students might be valuable for their host country if they decide to stay there after their studies. Their skills, international experience and experience of the host country might result very useful in filling the gaps in the host country’s l abour market. Therefore, this study aims to understand international student’s perspectives on post-graduation employment to Sweden. To fulfil the aim, qualitative inductive approach was followed so the interviewees were not influenced by predetermined questions. Ten in-depth, unstructured interviews with international students at a Swedish university were conducted. Interviews were analysed using the method of qualitative content analysis, following three research questions which lead to five themes – career advancement, enhanced life quality, employers’ rejections, lack of soci al interactions and family role. Based on the findings, a conceptual framework was developed. The conceptual framework consists of the push and pull model, national culture, and cognitive dissonance which were found to be useful for the analysis and interpretation of the findings. Using findings from the interviews and conceptual framework, the analysis was conducted which was followed by the discussion, where the authors of this thesis interpreted and discussed the findings from different perspectives. This thesis revealed that international students are attracted to work in Sweden for different reasons. However, finding a job in Sweden is a difficult task for them. It has emerged that international students are facing troubles when looking for employment as well as with communicating with locals. Those troubles were discussed with the goal to understand why do they come out. Family topic has also emerged suggesting that it plays an important role when deciding whether to seek employment in Sweden after the studies or not. As this thesis provides insights into the experiences of international students, it is beneficial for the companies who are interested in hiring them. Moreover, companies who have never considered hiring international students could be encouraged to try a new practice. The stories provided in the thesis might be useful for the university, when providing assistance for international students as well as for the students themselves to form a realistic picture of what they might experience in Sweden.

Cette thèse a eu pour objet de montrer comment les universités d’Etat sous prétexte d’une conformité aux référentiels internationaux s’engagent dans la réforme du L.M.D et développent la professionnalisation. Le texte met en exergue les épreuves auxquelles sont soumis les Etats, notamment les pays en voie de développement comme le Sénégal, dans l’incitation à la professionnalisation des études par le milieu de l’emploi, les pouvoirs politiques, les institutions et organismes partenaires internationaux. Le statut de service public garantissant la démocratisation des savoirs transmis comme bien public est fortement examiné. La réforme de la professionnalisation des études universitaires est-elle imitable, transposable ou se construit-elle localement ? Est-elle opportune pour une université du sud et compatible avec la gratuité de l’enseignement supérieur ? Telles sont les questions essentielles auxquelles l’étude a tenté d’apporter des réponses. / The purpose of this thesis work is to show how state universities - under the pretence of accordance with international frameworks - undertake the L.M.D. reform and develop professionalization. The text highlights how states - particularly in developing countries like Senegal - come under pressure from the world of employment, political powers and international partner institutions and organisms for the development of occupational qualifications. The “public service” status as a guarantee of the democratization of the knowledge transmitted as a public good has been closely examined. Is the reform of the professionalization of higher education imitable and transferable, or is it necessarily home-grown ? Is this reform suitable for southern universities and compatible with free higher education ? These are the main questions raised and discussed in this study.

Job-sharing in the South African labour market : its potential, feasibility and impact on unemployment, productivity and quality of work life

The primary aim of this survey is to: * explore whether there is potential for job-sharing in the South African labour market; * * describe the characteristics of potential job-sharers and to explain why Job-sharing would be an appropriate and feasible solution to unemployment, massive retrenchments, poor quality ofwork life (QWL) and low worker productivity Job-sharing has been used in many developed countries to address a variety of problems at the individual, organisational and national level. These include allowing workers to have a balance between their work and non-work life; to increase worker productivity and QWL and to increase employment opportunities. The literature survey affirms that these problems are prevalent in Africa as a whole and in South Africa specifically. The survey results reveal that the environment in South is Africa is conducive to jobsharing and that slightly over one third of the workers and organisations and two thirds of the jobseekers are willing to job-share. The results of this study also reveals that QWL, productivity and unemployment does influence the willingness to job-share and that approximately 80% of the employees would rather either job-share, work-share or opt for some other alternative than to have retrenchments. Thus by implication, job-sharing would address the problems relating to poor QWL, low worker productivity, fewer employment opportunities, as well as massive retrenchments in South Africa. The study has also explored possible reasons and obstacles to job-sharing and found that whether these are perceived as significantly important or not, depends on whether one is an employer, employee or job-seeker . The job-seekers feel more than others, that there is no reason insurmountable or obstacle preventing the introduction of job-sharing by which to avert their unemployed status. There are also differences in willingness to job-share among subgroups with regard to the industry, area of work, position held in the organisation and the availability of job-sharing positions in the organisation. This thesis reports that there is potential for job-sharing in the South African labour market, to address a variety of problems pertaining to workers, organisations, job-seekers and, therefore, the whole nation at large. / Business Management / D.B.L.

The study aimed at investigating the role played by ABET programmes in the development of rural black women in the Omusati Region. The study was to determine whether the ABET programmes that are provided in the area are offering relevant education that helps the women of the area in their development. The research findings indicated that the ABET programmes offered are not providing the relevant skills needed to develop the women participants. The programmes that are offered concentrate on literacy and numeracy, and it seem not to be very effective in making a difference to the women's lives. Women needs skills that can help them generate income to improve their living conditions. The study, in summary, established that the programmes offered by the ABET centres would be more effective if skills training is included to uplift and improve the lives of the participants on a social, economical as well as educational level. / Agriculture, Animal Health and Human Ecology / M. Parcours migratoires et scolaires d'enfants arméniens à Valence durant l'entre-deux-guerres / .

Lancés sur les routes de l’exil, suite au génocide de 1915 perpétré par le gouvernement JeuneTurc, les réfugiés arméniens sont à la recherche d’un territoire susceptible de les accueillir.Après un exode qui a duré plusieurs années, et qui les a conduits dans les pays de la péninsule balkanique et dans tout le Proche-Orient, certains font le choix de la France. C’est en 1922 ou 1923 (selon les sources) que les premiers réfugiés arrivent à Valence. D’autres leur emboîtent le pas les années suivantes. Mon étude tente de mettre en évidence les parcours migratoiresdes familles arméniennes valentinoises et des enfants scolarisés, depuis leurs lieux d’origine jusqu’à Valence. Plusieurs vagues migratoires, plus ou moins longues selon la durée de déplacements des populations, et parfois simultanées ou enchevêtrées, se succèdent. Très souvent, l’itinéraire, qui a conduit les familles arméniennes dans la cité drômoise, n’a pas été direct depuis leur débarquement à Marseille, mais jalonné d’étapes, qui sont autant de marqueurs des situations socio-économiques rencontrées avant leur installation à Valence, parfois définitive pour de nombreuses familles. Mon étude tente également de faire apparaîtreles différents parcours scolaires effectués au sein de l’école française. Dès les premières arrivées, les enfants entrent à l’école primaire et suivent des parcours variés, même si, pour les premiers arrivants, la préoccupation au sortir de la scolarité obligatoire reste l’obtention immédiate d’un emploi. Les parcours au sein d’un enseignement organisé en deux filièresprincipales et socialement inégalitaires ne sont pas simples et des difficultés diverses se dressent, amenant certains à abandonner soit leurs études secondaires, soit à se maintenir au sein de l’école primaire. Le système scolaire accueille ces enfants et l’enjeu linguistique passe au premier plan. D’autres élèves y mènent un parcours brillant. Sous l’influence de lasituation socioéconomique locale, les familles arméniennes opèrent des choix pour leurs enfants et des comportements se dessinent. Si pour certaines, le système scolaire doit permettre une émancipation et l’apprentissage d’un métier, au travers des professions d’ouvriers qualifiés ou de techniciens mais aussi d’emplois de bureau, pour d’autres, la reprise d’une affaire commerciale familiale ou l’apprentissage d’une profession artisanale s’impose. Le passage par l’école obligatoire permet d’atteindre un niveau linguistique plus sûr, mais aussi une qualification plus importante, qui enrichit l’affaire familiale. La destinée familiale a très souvent tracé un avenir scolaire aux enfants de la seconde génération, revu à l’âge adulte avec de nouvelles opportunités professionnelles. / Launched on the exile roads, after the 1915 genocide caused by the Jeune-Turc government, the Armenian refugees were in search of a territory open to welcome them. After an exodus which lasted several years and led them into the Balkan States and the whole Near East, some of them made the choice of France. The first refugees turned up in Valence in 1922 or 1923 (itdepends on the pieces of information). Others followed a few years later. My study attempts to show the Armenian families and children’s geographical routes, from their places of origin to Valence. Several more or less varied waves of immigrants occurred. Very often, the trip from Marseille to the “Cité drômoise” was not straight. The different stages of their French itinerary appear as markers of their varied social and economic conditions before their arrival in Valence. My contribution will also attempt to show the different school careers they made in French schools. As soon as the first arrived, children were sent to primary school and had varied school careers, even if labor remained a priority at the end of their compulsory education. The school careers in the two main educational profiles- socially unequal- were not simple and many pupils had difficulties in completing their primary or secondary schooling. The French school welcomed these foreign pupils and the acquisition of the French language was the most important issue. Other pupils had outstanding courses. Affected by the local socio-economic circumstances, the Armenian families made choices for their children. For some of them, school had to promote the learning of a trade, as skilled labourers, technicians or office workers. Others expected their children to continue the family business. Compulsory schooling promoted the acquisition of the French language but also increased the qualification levels. The Armenians wanted a future for their children and resigned themselves to the choices of their parents. After their teenage years, their professions changed and the families’ destinies advanced with new career opportunities.

Bakalauro darbe analizuojamos neįgaliųjų įsidarbinimo galimybės socialinių pedagogų ir neįgaliųjų požiūriu. Darbas žmogui yra viena svarbiausių ir prasmingiausių veiklų, kuri suteikia ne tik finansinį saugumą, bet ir padeda užmegzti kontaktus su kitais žmonėmis, palaikyti santykius, taip pat didina savigarbą. Socialiniai pedagogai ir patys neįgalieji yra tie asmenys, kurie mato neįgaliųjų integracijos situaciją iš arti ir jų požiūris gana plačiai parodo esamą situaciją. Pagrindinis šio darbo tikslas – atskleisti neįgaliųjų įsidarbinimo galimybes socialinių pedagogų ir neįgaliųjų požiūriu. Siekiant įgyvendinti šį tikslą buvo pasitelktas kokybinis tyrimas, taikant turinio (content) analizės metodą. Tyrime dalyvavo dvi informantų grupės. Pirmąją grupę sudarė 6 socialiniai pedagogai dirbantys su neįgaliaisiais ir padedantys jiems profesijos įgijimo situacijoje. Antrąją grupę sudarė 6 asmenys turintys negalią. Informantai pasirinkti naudojant patogiąją tikslinę atranką. / Employment opportunities for people with disabilities from the point of view of social educators and people with disabilities are analysed in the present Bachelor’s Thesis. Employment is one the most important and meaningful activities for a human being providing with not only financial security but serving as means for making contacts with other people, establishment of relations, and increasing self-esteem as well. Social educators and people with disabilities themselves are the people who see the situation in respect of the situation in the field of integration of people with disabilities from a close range and their point of view reflects the current situation quite extensively. The key aim of this Paper is to reveal employment opportunities for people with disabilities from the point of view of social educators and people with disabilities. A qualitative study was used by applying a content analysis method in order to achieve this aim. Two groups of informants have participated in the study. The first group consisted of 6 social educators working with the disabled people and providing assistance to them in situations related to acquisition of an occupation. The second group consisted of 6 people with disabilities. The informants have been chosen using a convenient target selection method.

The aim of this diploma thesis is to analyse in detail the issue of the position of women in top management positions in the Czech Republic. The theoretical part of the thesis focus mainly on the legislation and mapping of the current situation of the issue. The thesis also examines gender, gender identity and gender mainstreaming, all of those terms are defined in detail in the text. The first part of the theses builds an important theoretical base and explains terms such as glass ceiling and the mentioned gender mainstreaming. The work also investigates the issue of equal pay and employment of women. The practical part of the thesis contains its own qualitative research that was done with specific top managers in the selected company. The aim of the practical part is to compare the theoretical concepts of the position of women on the Czech labour market with the situation in a particular Czech company. During the research are investigated both opinions of top managers on the nationwide situation as well as the situation within the company. Based on the research results, the research questions are answered and recommendations for improving the current position of women on the Czech labour market are formulated.

Career maturity, career knowledge, and self knowledge among psychology honours students : an exploratory study

This study explores career maturity, self knowledge and career knowledge and how they influence career decision-making processes among psychology honours students at a South African institution of higher learning. A mixed method approach was used to collect data among (N=62) students who were asked to fill in two career development questionnaires namely, the Career Decision-making Difficulties Questionnaire (CDDQ) and the Career Development Questionnaire (CDQ). 10 scales were measured using the CDDQ. Analysis of the CDDQ revealed moderate difficulties on the General Indecisiveness, Dysfunctional Beliefs and Occupational Information scales. Pertaining to the CDQ, 5 distinct scales which explore the levels of Self information (Self knowledge), Decision making, Career information (Career knowledge), Integration of self information and career information, and Career planning were assessed. Analysis of the CDQ revealed that respondents had adequate levels of career maturity. The results of the content analysis on the qualitative data indicate clinical psychology to be the most popular in relation to other fields of study, followed by research psychology counselling psychology and psychometry. / Dissertation (MA)--University of Pretoria, 2010. / Psychology / unrestricted
