Engineering through pre-university student\'s eyes and the impact of science fairs.

Adriana Anunciatto Depieri 11 December 2014 (has links)
A changing world, with increasing needs of global science and technology solutions, makes the demand for scientists and engineers a major issue for competitiveness and economic and social development of any country. Young people should be increasingly motivated and prepared in K-12 education in order to provide society with not only more, but better undergraduate students and engineering professionals. Thus, the knowledge of attitudes, thoughts, opinions and perceptions of preuniversity students regarding engineering is crucial to act on increasing the number of future engineers and to predict their persistence in the area. Because it is in high school that young people make their first choices about careers, participating in the development of science research projects and presentation at science fairs may play an important role not only in this decision, but in the development of essential skills and competencies to succeed in any career, especially in engineering. To understand and analyze the universe of high school students, in this context, questionnaires were applied in five research situations, whose target audience were young pre-university students, involved or not in science fair activities, and in another situation with teachers. Based on this research data, , young people had positive attitudes and perceptions towards engineering and engineers, regardless of gender, age, type of school and type of high school course attended. However, students involved with the development of research projects and participation in science fairs showed more positive attitudes and more self-confidence than those not involved. The intention of studying engineering was high in all research situations, particularly in the areas of civil and electrical engineering. Furthermore, both youth and teachers recognized in the activities related to the development of research projects and participation in science fair, opportunities to develop skills and competencies necessary for professional success in a globalized world. This research was conducted to understand and analyze the universe of secondary education students related to engineering and engineers with the intention to support future actions on increasing the number of future engineers and to predict their persistence in the area. Moreover, it is expected that results of this research may also contribute to and support the development of governmental programs and proposals for high school curricula changes in in order to meet the needs of awakening, developing and enhancing new XXI century skills and competencies.

This study articulates research on organization theory, higher education and sociology of economy, and employs theoretical (systematic literature review, narrative literature research and document analysis) and empirical (questionnaires, case study, business press, social networks, interviews) approaches. Initially, an overview on Theory of Academic Capitalism' research is presented, comparing it with competing/complementary theories, and proposing classification schemes based on analytical level, research focus, and findings. In analyzing transformations of Brazilian higher education from macrostructural/organizational perspectives, it will be argued that academic capitalism takes its first steps after the Reform of 1968; rises and gains more intense contours in the 80's; consolidates in the 90's; instrumentalizes itself in the 2000s and based on the associations between the current government and the business sector, threatens to take an even more aggressive form in the coming years. This process has facilitated the entry of actors of the Finance field (banks, investment funds, gurus of management, CEOs-celebrity) into the field of higher education, who find in student organizations the meanings to reproduce narratives, discourses, behaviors, and performance metrics aligned with financial logic, legitimizing a new ethos and influencing student education. In the case of the production engineers' education, which is the focus of this work, such transformations can be perceived in the rapid expansion of the Financial Market Leagues (FML), a movement that gained projection only in 2015, but have already reached 56 Brazilian universities. A survey with 82 members of these organizations revealed that these students, influenced by the perception that such environments represent not only greater financial gains but also more challenging/dynamic opportunities, have increasingly fueled expectations of inclusion in the financial sector. A case study conducted in the undergraduate course of Production Engineering at a national public university (NPU) allowed to verify an increase of 450% in the annual average of internships in this sector after the creation of the FML on this campus, in addition to the decrease (33%) of graduates in the industrial sector. On the one hand, the FML-NPU fostered a dynamics that strengthened the ties between university and financial sector actors, boosting the insertion of students in this sector. On the other hand, it triggered a sociocultural dynamic that sometimes subtly, sometimes explicitly, hierarchizes the students between "the selected and the unselected", between those who "went to the bank" and those who did not, segregating them. Interviews with the founders of FML-NPU revealed the strategies used to co-opt "easy-to-shape" students, catechizing them according to the aggressive culture of results. It will be sought to demonstrate that the data presented here represent to some degree one of the consequences of the rise of the aforementioned financial logic, firstly announced in the productive sphere and now sneaks into the education of production engineers itself. / 1601669

An Investigation of the Impact Gender-Specific Course Grouping Has on Female Middle-School Students' Concept of and Interests Toward Technology and Engineering

Walsh, Thomas Broderick 06 August 2021 (has links)
Attempts to improve retention, interest, and enrollment of females in Technology & Engineering Education courses have included a variety of approaches including female-only classes. However, the implications of such courses have not been thoroughly investigated. Therefore, an investigation of female-only classes was undertaken; the findings revealed that the overall enrollment of females went up in the course and in subsequent classes, these students maintained their interests and attitudes towards Technology and Engineering, their perceptions of an engineer's gender changed from that of mostly male to mostly female, and their concepts of what an engineer does changed from mostly building or fixing things to that of mostly someone who designs. This study used two instruments: the Technology Engineering Attitude Survey (TEAS) and the Draw an Engineer Test (DAET). The population of the study was 7th grade middle school students. They were placed into two groups: the control being the mixed male female engineering and technology classes, and the treatment being the all-female students enrolled in the same engineering technology course.
