Nilsson, Sara, Persson, Robin January 2018 (has links)
Throughout our teacher training program, we have noticed that students struggle to see the reason with writing task designs that are short and concludes upon the end of the lesson. Therefore, this degree project aims to gain an insight to whether the methods used in process writing and its various concepts can be used efficiently within schools to assist students in reaching higher grades and have higher rates of academic success, as well as discover the impacts of motivation tied in with the use of these specific task designs. This paper will firstly introduce an overview of the different theories and concepts that are tied to process writing, such as feedback, rubrics use. In prior studies made, researchers have found that academic success is influenced by the use of strategies that correlate to the methods in process writing, and also describes how this impact is made. Secondly, this degree project is based on interviews made with three active 7-9 English teachers and 15 students (in years 8-9) in the southern of Sweden to research the possibility of motivation being affected in any way through the use of these task designs that, according to researchers, will lead the students to higher rates of academic success. The major conclusions of this study are that (I) students and teachers feel that it is useful to utilize the different key concepts tied to process writing in order to gain proficiency in the English language, (II) teachers often use at least one, if not more, of the methods included in process writing, and feel that they have an impact on student learning within the subject, (III) students feel that their motivation can be impacted through the use of these strategies, and be affected differently based on teacher instruction, (IV) many of the schools that were visited have grade-oriented students that can affect student motivation to learn, and the reasons for learning, (V) in addition to how well the students feel engaged to work with a task depending on their interests. (VI) Lastly, it also has an impact at what stage the teacher decides to assess their students, while working with process writing tasks.

The world through words : A mixed methods study of literature’s role in developing intercultural awareness

Costemale Blomqvist, Malin January 2024 (has links)
This study examines the role of literature in developing intercultural awareness among year 5 pupils within the context of English Language Teaching (ELT) in Sweden. As cultural diversity in classrooms increases, this study explores how literature functions as a medium to comprehend diverse cultural narratives and enhance empathy. Employing a mixed-methods approach, including quantitative questionnaires, qualitative interviews and focus group discussions, the study evaluates both the direct and deeper impacts of multicultural literature on pupils’ intercultural awareness. Key findings indicate that literature’s effectiveness in developing intercultural awareness largely depends on appropriate text selection and its integration into teaching practices. Challenges include teachers’ difficulty in assessing pupils’ intercultural awareness, which hampers the implementation of effective educational strategies. Additionally, the results highlight the varying levels of pupils’ engagement, influenced by their own cultural backgrounds. Pupils with diverse cultural experiences tended to show greater empathy and interest in cultural narratives, whereas those less exposed to cultural diversity were more likely to be disengaged. The findings suggest that targeted selection of literature and strategic curriculum integration are essential for maximising the educational benefits of literature in promoting intercultural awareness. Furthermore, the findings highlight the importance of teacher preparedness in choosing and presenting literature that not only resonates with pupils but also enriches their learning experience, as well as further integrating the literature reading through discussions to improve the development of intercultural awareness.

“What Makes Children Different Is What Makes Them Better”: Teaching Mexican Children “English” to Foster Multilingual, Multiliteracies, and Intercultural Practices

Lopez-Gopar, Mario E. 24 February 2010 (has links)
This dissertation documents a critical-ethnographic-action-research (CEAR) project conducted in two elementary schools in Oaxaca, Mexico, with the collaboration of one language teacher educator and ten language student teachers. The two schools have a diverse student body composed of mestizo children and children from different Indigenous groups. The CEAR Project challenged historical and societal ideologies that position Indigenous children as deficient learners and their translanguaging and multiliteracies practices as inappropriate for schools. The CEAR Project was also a response to a world phenomenon that associates English with “development” and economic success and Indigenous and “minoritized” languages with backwardness marginalization. The CEAR Project’s purpose was to use the student teachers’ English language praxicum in order to: (a) develop elementary school teaching expertise, (b) co-construct affirming identities among all the participants, (c) foster multilingual, multiliteracies, and intercultural practices, and (d) dialogue with the children in order to change pejorative ideologies that regard certain languages, literacies, and cultures as better than others. The Transformative Multiliteracies Pedagogy developed by Cummins (in press) and critical pedagogies theory (Freire, 1970; Norton & Toohey, 2004) informed the CEAR Project and the data collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and children’s work samples. Using narrative, photos, and videos, this dissertation presents the migratory lives, the families, and the language and literacy practices of 50 children, and their views regarding the English language and Indigenous languages and peoples. It portrays the vivid critical moments and changes that occurred in the praxicum as the children became teachers and linguists. Through the construction of identity texts and the translanguaging and multiliteracies practices that the student teachers and the children engaged in, stories emerge that portray them as the intelligent, creative, and genuine individuals that they really are. This dissertation also documents how the children’s complex lives challenged constructs such as “family” and “Indigenous,” and the new Mexican educational policy that brings English into public elementary schools using a generic English software. It is concluded that every policy, theory, social construct, pedagogy, and curriculum should be challenged on a daily basis if we are truly to serve the ever-evolving diverse classrooms of today.

Compreensão oral no livro didático: o enigma da alteridade e o estranhamento do inglês como língua estrangeira / Listening comprehension in textbooks: the enigma of alterity and the estrangement of English as a foreign language

Marques, Beatriz Herdy Raminelli 12 February 2019 (has links)
There is a variety of manuals for the teaching of the English language which prescribe Several methodologies in order to address listening comprehension activities. However, by the contact with students during the teaching practice, we realized that despite the strategies many learners still have difficulties in performing either the listening comprehension exercises from textbooks, or the proficiency tests. Thus, the purpose of this research is to analyze the functioning of listening comprehension activities from a semantic-discursive perspective (ORLANDI, 1983; CORACINI, 1999; PÊCHEUX, 1990), cultural studies (WOODWARD, 2000), postcolonial studies (ANCHIMBE, ANCHIMBE, 2005) and based on psychoanalytical concepts such as other/Other, uncanny (unheimlich) and enigma which we use as a metaphor for the notions of unconscious and repression (FREUD, 1996; LACAN, 1998; KOLTAI, 1998). Therefore, we discuss the textbook, the role of the English teacher and the representations of listening comprehension in the speech of the students and teachers interviewed.

In this research, we analyze theoretical concepts and beliefs about teaching English mediated by technologies and verify how they interact in the teachers' practice guidance from the courses linked to Proinfo Integrated Program. The underlying concept of the research is that the characteristics of the technological education program, Proinfo Integrated and of the English teachers affect the English teaching. The justification for the study is that there is a need to focus in service education. We intend to question the education program from practice and examine how it promotes the triad action-reflection-action from the technological courses offered in blended learning. The theoretical underpinnings are language concepts, teaching and learning approaches, beliefs about teaching language, training and practice of English teaching in digital era, and mediation tools in Education. The methodology adopted for the investigation is interpretative with ethnographic characteristics. Data were collected from open-ended and dialogic questionnaires; semi-structured interviews; e-proinfo tools; and online portfolio. While collecting the data, information obtained was organized in order to facilitate triangulation as to answer the research questions based on the theories. The results reveal that when English teachers are instigated to integrate technologies in pedagogical activities, they choose different teaching approaches such as appropriation, complementation, production and/or interaction. Therefore, we can say that the education program, Proinfo Integrated presents teachers a variety of approaches in introducing the linguistic subject using different technologies according to their own... O ensino de língua inglesa no ensino médio integrado ao técnico do Instituto Federal do Paraná: um contexto idiossincrático / The english language teaching in vocational secondary school education at Federal Intitute of Paraná: an idiosyncratic context

Ferrarini-Bigareli, Marlene Aparecida 29 August 2016 (has links)
English language education within Vocational Secondary School Education (Ensino Médio Integrado à Educação Profissional Técnica EMIEPT) is a prolific area that has generated research in various angles. Understanding this context, more specifically placed at the Federal Institute of Paraná (IFPR) is the main concern of this research due to the complexity and diversity of the issues that make up this scenario. We develop a descriptive-interpretative research organized in two phases: research indexation in literature and field work. The research design enables us to narrow down the tendencies from the broader ones that characterize the EMIEPT towards the ones that are context-related within the IFPR by identifying concepts and practices of IFPR teachers through the analysis of twenty-two teaching plans, eighteen questionnaires and six interviews. The results of the literature indexation show a growing research movement in EMIEPT carried out by teacher-researchers who work in this context. This evidence evokes both the need for finding solutions to conflicts inside the context and the need for continuing education. The analysis of the questionnaires shows that the professionals who teach English language at IFPR receive little continuing education on the philosophical and epistemological foundations of EMIEPT. The results of the interviews analysis corroborate the data showing tendencies in English language teaching practices at IFPR, mainly teachers concerns and difficulties. The results obtained through the analysis of teaching plans and cross-analysis between the data of the two phases of the research allows us to describe the contradictions, overlaps and similarities present in the multifaceted scenario of English Language education in the EMIEPT at IFPR. The results also show that this teaching context gives priority to student general education and the integration with vocational education is restricted to superficial aspects. In conclusion, the scenario claims for two types of actions that could contribute to the improvement of quality in English language education: continuing education for teachers and political engagement of professionals working in the area.

Das histórias que nos habitam: por uma formação de professores de inglês para o Brasil / Re-thinking the histories that inhabit us: towards a Brazilian oriented English language teacher education program

Jucá, Leina Claudia Viana 03 April 2017 (has links)
This research developed between the year 2012 and the year 2016 investigated the increasing lack of interest in the teaching profession, including English language teaching (ELT), in Brazilian (public) basic education. This study was developed mainly on the basis of post-modern theories, related mainly to post-structuralist and decolonial concepts concerning language, discourse, epistemology and identity, used in order to better understand the influences of Modernity on the historical construction of the teacher identity and the teaching profession status. Some of the main objectives of this research were to identify the principles that ground ELT and EL teacher education in Brazil; examine the discourses that influence the construction of teacher identity and the basis of such discourses; and understanding to what extent such principles and discourses affect the (dis)interest in the teaching profession. The introduction situates this study in the Brazilian educational setting, and it presents the general and specific objectives that guided the development of this research, as well as the research questions, methodology and participants. Chapter 01 presents a historical overview of Brazilian education, starting from the Jesuit educational system implemented in 1549 and ending after the promulgation of the Brazilian National Law on Education (LDB) in 1996. Chapter 02 focuses on the role of discourse in the construction of reality, in the invention of tradition, and in the creation of the ideas of development and progress, which explained the need for civilization. This justified the colonization of lands and peoples and served as the basis for the invention of Western History. Chapter 03 refers to the invention of languages including English language, and English as an international language (EIL) and to the historical construction of identity based on the ideas of fixity and normality, denying its fluid and nomadic nature. The concluding chapter elicits current political events, addresses the implications of the circular nature of History on the construction of teacher identity and the negative status of the teaching profession, and also reiterates the need for a critical literacy-guided English language teacher education as a way of promoting changes.
