A system review of higher education admissions testing practices in Israel: implications for South Africa

Cronje, Johan Herman January 2009 (has links)
Internationally, the practice of admissions entry testing in Higher Education (HE) has gained momentum over the past few decades, sparking ongoing research on its effectiveness. On a national level, three factors have signalled a timeous evaluation of admissions practices at HE institutions. Firstly, changes in the school curriculum and the new format of the National Senior Certificate (NSC) have impacted on the admissions criteria of HE institutions. Secondly, with the merging of HE institutions an alignment in admissions practices between the institutions involved were necessitated. Thirdly, South Africa has embarked on the development of National Benchmark Tests (NBTs). The primary aim of this research study was to develop a set of recommendations to guide admissions testing practices in the South African HE context. These recommendations had to place special emphasis on the multicultural and multilingual context of this country. To achieve this aim a systematic review was conducted on HE admissions testing in Israel, as it was identified as a multicultural and multilingual country that had successfully implemented national HE admissions testing. More specifically, a retrospective systematic review was performed on research regarding the national HE admissions test, the Psychometric Entrance Test (PET), used in Israel. The systematic review also contained a narrative overview on the educational landscape in Israel and the specifications of the PET, from which themes were also extracted. Eight broad themes emerged through the systematic review and narrative overview as being of critical importance to an effective national HE admissions test. These were the components of the test, the implementation of the testing programme, the method in which the test results are used to make HE admission decisions, the reliability xi of the test, the validity of the test, bias inherent in the test, other psychometric aspects related to the admissions test, and the effect of coaching or specialized preparation on test results. These themes, together with their sub-components, were used to develop eight recommendations that can guide the development and implementation of the National Benchmark Test (NBTs) in South Africa. Both the themes that emerged during the systematic review and narrative overview as well as the recommendations that were made to guide the development and implementation of a national admission test, represent an important contribution to the field of admission testing and decision-making in South Africa.

This research aims at investigating and understanding the childhood condition through age relationships and production of childhood culture among small children in educational context, raising new questions related to a budding issue. Therefore, through ethnographic studies, the focus of this research was to observe, describe and analyze the everyday life of small children (mainly from 3 to 6 years old) at a public institution of Early Childhood Education in Campinas/SP. Thus, the core of the concern in this investigation is related to the necessity for a broader concept of childhood beyond the theoretical concepts of child developmental psychology, towards Social Sciences knowledge, mainly Anthropology. This broader concept, intertwined with Brazilian and Italian productions in the Childhood Education field, involves children in different age groups, in privileged spaces of a variety of relationships (including social class, ethnic, gender, etc¿) among children in the same and in different age groups, and its implications in the construction of a Pedagogy of Early Childhood Education that knows who these children are and what they are producing beyond any stage theory determinations and imposed chronological demarcations, as opposed to their age / Doutorado / Educação, Sociedade, Politica e Cultura / Doutor em Educação

Relações dialógicas em narrativas / Dialogic relationships in narratives

Maciel, Lucas Vinicio de Carvalho, 1983- 12 November 2014 (has links)
Orientador: Raquel Salek Fiad / Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Estudos da Linguagem / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-26T12:53:39Z (GMT). The dialogic relationships are a language constitutive phenomenon and can be presented through several ways. This will be shown trough some compositions of Unicamp¿s entrance exam. The texts are part of a research corpus constituted by 111 compositions that present in their constitution some predominance of narrative typology (MARCUSCHI, 2002). Those compositions were evaluated and were considered the best ones by the Comissão Permanente para o Vestibular Unicamp (Unicamp¿s Entrance Exam Permanent Commission). The theoretical foundation of this research are Bakhtin¿s Circle reflections, especially those expressed in Problems of Dostoyevsky¿s Poetics (BAKHTIN, 1929/1963) and Marxism and Philosophy of Language (BAKHTIN/VOLOCHÍNOV, 1929). Based on these bakhtinian texts, the dialogic relationships will be examined through the following aspects: (i) the dialogue amplitudes (microdialogue, compositionally expressed dialogue and great dialogue); (ii) the orientation of the word in its various ways; (iii) the different compositional units of the discourse (the hero self-enunciation, narrator¿s discourse, dialogue between the characters); (iv) the different types and variants of discourse. In the analysis, examples of Dostoyevsky and other authors are compared with the students¿ compositions to show how the dialogic relationships can be similar on both students¿ texts as well as in the literary works. Through this comparison, it was possible to see the differences in the organization of the dialogic relationships, while comparing a short genre such as a composition with long genres as a novel. The four aspects previously indicated allow us to see and detail several phenomena of dialogic relationships, of connections and collisions between oneself voice and the voice of other, the voice that cites and the one that is cited. This thesis demonstrates that the conception of "dialogism" or "dialogic relationships" is more than one simple reference of a text or a voice to another text or another voice. Thereby, this study also leads us to rethink the concepts of "intertextuality" and "polyphony" and yet to discuss the literary features of the compositions, in which dialogic relationships are similar to literary texts / Doutorado / Lingua Materna / Doutor em Linguística Aplicada

Multifunkční pavilon / Multifunctional Pavilion

Dvouletý, Martin January 2018 (has links)
The subject of the diploma thesi is the design and assessment of the pavilions supporting structure for exhibition and other purposes. The building is located close to Zlin. Preliminary designs of supporting structure were created. One of these was selected and detaileddesigned and assessed. Generallythere are two structures that are extended between themselves. A design and assessment of the entrance portal for the exhibition pavilion was created. The entrance portal is an atypical structure that was created from a combination of hyperboloid and cylinder. The entire portal is formed of welded parts and it is completely from glass. The entrance portal has a variable height, where the highest point is 8,258m. The entrance portal is 20,394m long and has a variable width, where the largest width is 12,000m. The exhibition hall, which is located behind the entrance portal was designed from flat arched truss trusses. The arched trusses are made of several radii and hasa overall impression of an elliptical truss. The trusses have a range 37,000m and they are axially distant 6,000m. The height of the arched trusses is 10.530m. In the leading position of the construction were designed pillars and construction for possible connection of the entrance portal, or for the location of the gate system. Whole construction of the exhibition pavilion, without the entry portal, is 54,000m long and 37,000m wide. The built-up area of both structures is approximately 2200m2. Construction are designed according to normative requirements of CSN EN for limit state of load capacity and usability. The main material of the supporting structural parts was used S355JR steel.

Essays on Improving Access to Four-Year Colleges

Pippins, Theo January 2022 (has links)
This dissertation includes three essays that examine the potential of policies, interventions, and curricula in improving transitions to four-year colleges and universities in the U.S. The first essay provides a novel investigation of New York City’s adoption of SAT School Day (SSD), which provides universal access to college entrance exams for high school juniors. I examine the causal impact of the policy on SAT taking and four-year college enrollment patterns for the first three post-policy cohorts. Using a two-way fixed effects differences-in-differences (DID) model, I find that the SSD policy increases SAT-taking rates by 20% but has little impact on four-year enrollment. These findings suggest that increased college entrance test participation alone is not sufficient to increase enrollment to four-year colleges. The second essay provides a systematic review and meta-analysis of 19 studies on the causal impact of late pre-college advising interventions, which I refer to as LPCAIs. LPCAIs aim to connect juniors and seniors with pre-college advisors to guide them through the complex college application process. The studies use experimental and quasi-experimental designs to identify the causal effect of LPCAIs on postsecondary enrollment outcomes for historically underrepresented students. I find that the offer of an LPCAI, on average, increases postsecondary enrollment and improves institutional choices. However, the in-person advising format accounts for nearly all of the positive impact derived from LPCAIs. Several implications of these findings are discussed, particularly in the context of COVID-19. The third chapter presents a correlational study that uses transcript data from a statewide community college system to estimate how well GPA, credit accumulation, and course taking at community college predict upward transfer and baccalaureate completion. While GPAs and credit accumulation rates in all academic branches are strong, positive predictors of transfer, GPAs in humanities are significantly more predictive of transfer compared to GPAs in non-humanities branches. GPAs and successful credit accumulation rates in humanities courses are also associated with greater likelihoods of baccalaureate completion, conditional on transfer. However, humanities courses are equally valid predictors of baccalaureate completion as courses in other academic branches. In contrast to strong academic performance, taking more courses in humanities, although associated with greater likelihoods of vertical transfer, is associated with lower likelihoods of baccalaureate completion. Taken together, these essays contribute to our understanding of approaches to improve transitions to four-year colleges and universities. They also highlight the importance of academic preparation and advising within transitional pathways.

Factors Influencing College Readiness: Supports and Barriers Experienced by Academically Resilient First-Generation Hispanic Males

Peterman, Amy C. 01 January 2016 (has links)
This qualitative multiple-case study explored the supports and barriers experienced by nine first-generation Hispanic male high school students who met the college entrance requirements for the University of California and California State University systems. Research indicates that Hispanic males lag behind other underrepresented populations when it comes to college readiness, application, and enrollment rates. Given that parent education level is a strong predictor of degree attainment and that Hispanics have some of the lowest parent education levels, it is essential to examine how first-generation college-bound Hispanic males experience supports that help mitigate the barriers they face when pursuing college enrollment. Particularly in California, where the Hispanic population continues to rise exponentially, it is important for educational practitioners to develop a better understanding of how to support first-generation Hispanic students. This study aims to contribute to the research on improving college access for underrepresented populations using resiliency theory as the lens through which to examine this issue. Rather than look through a deficit-oriented lens, resiliency theory focuses on the protective factors or supports that help mitigate risk factors or barriers. Using data collected through interviews and document analysis, the findings here showed the significant role of supports such as academic capital and college knowledge, a systematic focus on college readiness, college readiness and bridge programs, and a strong counseling program for these students. In addition, it was evident that the students’ familial connections to college had a significant impact on the level of academic capital of each of them, reinforcing the need to look beyond the label of “first-generation”.
