Architectural Spaces Of Innovation The Case: Metu Technopolis

Balkan, Ozlem 01 December 2006 (has links) (PDF)
Since the second half of twentieth century, the economic value of scientific work produced in academic settings has been increased, the terms of &lsquo / Science Park&rsquo / , &lsquo / Technopark&rsquo / , &lsquo / Technopole&rsquo / and &lsquo / Technoburb&rsquo / are appeared. And these settlements attempt to stimulate and promote further use of the knowledge on a certain part of studies that can be put in commercial use. Consequently, the need for concerning the relations in between these technopark settings -within the university settings- and the social network they constitute occurred. This need brought new aspects in &lsquo / architecture of knowledge&rsquo / into consideration and found its reflection in the physical setting such as / the architectural spaces for innovation, and the social quality of spaces for the spatial performance issues. This spatial point of view is the issue that the study considers through the methodology of spatial data analysis based over social sciences. The study consigns the initial proposition of the analysis on the relationship between the spatial organization of the Technopark and its communal networks in spatial, communal and virtual mediums. The second proposition is the relationships whether in the consequence this relationship form spatial typologies or not. The focus of the study is a socio-spatial analysis of the interior public spaces of communal interaction within the technology producing factories, named as &ldquo / Technoparks&rdquo / . The study is basically circumscribed within the borders of the case / METU Technopolis&rsquo / s public or common spaces.

An investigation on task interruptions and the physical environment for human performance

Seo, Hyun-Bo 14 July 2011 (has links)
Many dangerous or tragic events such as airplane crashes and medical errors are often the result of human errors, and these errors are often the result of a professional worker being interrupted during a critical task. Although their impact can be serious, the ways that interruptions are affected by the physical environment have rarely been examined in the study of architecture. Therefore, this thesis investigates how the physical environment helps manage the interruptions by observing the process of medication administration by nurses in hospital units. Nurse shadowing observation data showed that the level of visibility of work areas in and around nurse stations significantly contributed to the number of interruptions initiated by others. Therefore, this thesis concludes that the physical environment affects interruption events and discusses the design implications of observation-based findings and the potential impact of the physical environment on major clinical errors. As for future directions for investigation, this thesis suggests that interruptions become a more prominent subject for consideration in architecture, and the physical environment as a subject for analyzing interruption and performance in human factors and health care.

Lyckberg, Pernilla, Fritzson, Maria January 2010 (has links)
The purpose with our research in Varbergs Kurort is to study how persons that have been a part of the individual adjusted rehabilitation program First Step have found their stay during their program. The program holds a team of professionals that together work with the individual’s physical and mental health. In our study we have included eight women and to men in the age between 35-65 years who all suffered from a slight mentally illness. Out of a social psychological perspective we have based our study from the social and room environment and how their self-recovery has affected their wellbeing during their rehabilitation. In our study we have out of qualitative interviews put together our results. The interviews were out of a narrative character where the persons told us about parts out of their lives. Our results shows that there is a huge individual development depending on what faze they are in their depression ore on their way recovering from depression. Most of them felt an enormous support from the staff and by meeting people in similar situations as their own. Also the beautiful surroundings had a positive effect of their recovering. The results have been analysed from Johan Asplunds theory about social responses and unsocial responses, how the social environment affects the individual. We also made an environmental psychological analysis with the theory about restorative surroundings and the term cognitive maps that makes the spatial environmental affects of the individual rehabilitation.

Experiencing natural environments, experiencing health : a health psychology perspective : a thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Health Psychology, Massey University, Albany, New Zealand

Malur, Malini January 2010 (has links)
This aim of this study was to explore the importance of natural surroundings to human health from a health psychology perspective. The increase in built environments have replaced green spaces in the urban areas and the effects of this has been explored by several disciplines ranging from environmental psychology, leisure studies, urban planning, public health to name a few. Findings from these studies have shown that natural environments do play a significant role in human health. However, it was deemed that exploring the influence of nature on human health from a health psychology viewpoint would provide a different dimension to this established link between nature and humans to press for preserving and providing more green spaces in the cities. Urban green areas offer several benefits such as space for exercise, leisure, psychological space for rejuvenating, healing and social connections that are all crucial for our wellbeing. This study explores the many ways natural settings contribute to health and well-being from a health psychology angle. A qualitative design was employed using a phenomenological approach to understand the everyday experience of being in nature/natural environments. Cornwall Park/One Tree Hill in Auckland was chosen as the site for this study. Nine women and men between the ages of 30 and 70 were chosen from this site to take part in the study. Methods of data collection were mainly in-depth interviews and photo-discussion. The data was analysed using a phenomenological approach based on the guidelines developed by Moustakas (1994) and van Manen (1990). The findings revealed that natural surroundings influenced people positively in many ways that contributed to their physical, mental and spiritual well-being. Natural environments satisfied a wide-range of needs, such as providing a place/space to exercise, to be alone and reflect, connect with nature, recreate, heal and socialise to name a few, in green, quiet, pollution-free, aesthetically pleasing settings. The essence of the phenomenon that is estimated to have been captured in the study is, “human experience in nature from the point of view of health psychology, or human experience of wellness, being in nature”.

Exploring place-identity at work

Segalo, Puleng Josephine 30 June 2004 (has links)
In this study the stories of Unisa academic employees and fashion models were explored. The aim was to understand the nature of place-identity at work and to also look at what impact do changes to these working environments have on place-identity. Another aim of this study was to compare these two work contexts. The data was collected through interviews combined with an auto-ethnographic approach. The study suggested that people form an identity towards their places of work and also that changes within the workplace can be perceived as a threat. The study also showed that there are similarities between Unisa and the catwalk as contexts of place-identity. / Psychology / M.A.(Psychology))

This study enabled the formulation of a new relationship between emotion and sporting environment from studies of affection. For this, we investigated the affective (feelings and emotions) from competition of athletes from various sports. We utilize the methodology of the seizure of affection affective maps, the methodology of scientific research was coined by Bomfim (2003) in their search for doctorate. From the maps the emotional feelings of the subjects investigated in relation to environments using drawings and metaphors, allowing the production of images that point to understand the affection for environments. 81 athletes participated in this research, chosen for convenience and saturation, formalizing an analytical study of type-interpretative (qualitative) with an additional statistical analysis provided by a Likert scale. The maps allow the construction of affective emotional images that relate to linking the individual to the environment when there are images that generate positive esteem and lead to action of individuals. But may also generate negative estimates in respect of the subject with the environment. In this study, athletes in competition produced images of belonging, pleasantness, attraction, contrast, insecurity and destruction. The images were positive with estimates of the pleasantness, proximity, contrast and attraction, while the negative images that were generated estimates of the destruction and insecurity. The image of pleasantness was prepared by the majority of the athletes it relates to the environment with good qualities and feelings as a great environment, beautiful and harmonious. The image of belonging, individuals who perceive the relationship with the environment as a good opportunity for good approximation to their meetings and similar. The image contrast is related to the sporting environment in which the athletes to represent feelings, emotions and words that have a contradictory positive and negative polarization. The image of attraction is that in which the athletes perceive their environment as offering good growth, learning and overcoming. Those negative images with esteem, insecurity and destruction, were prepared by a minimum of respondents, but has a rich reflection on the possibility of the sports environment is not enhanced the actions of athletes. These results were linked to the meaning of sports performance prepared by the athletes. We note that sports environments that generated images with positive esteem - pleasantness, proximity, contrast and attraction - seems to promote an idea of performance targets linked to the process contributing to the action of the athletes. For the images with negative estimates found that the concept of performance targets linked to the outcome of hampering the action of the athletes and their linkage with the sports environment. From these results the understanding of emotions in the sports environment from affection, could enable technicians, athletes and sports psychologists plan the involvement of athletes in sports not only focusing on the physical preparation, but also paying attention to the identification of athletes with their environments, because this binding was shown to be enhanced the actions of individuals which can lead to an improvement in performance.
