From an anthropological perspective, this research examines the relationships between people and horses in the “equine therapy”, a health treatment held, among other venues, at an Equine Center in São Carlos city, São Paulo (Brazil). In this ethnographic account, the goal is to discuss the role that horses play within this therapeutic which, according to Ande Brasil (2010), is intended to help with the “biopsychosocial development of people with disability issues and/or special needs”. I focus on the therapeutic sessions; in these, the praticantes (the native term, used in reference to the people addressed by this therapy, and who are, in majority, called specials), their parents, therapists, and auxiliary-guides connect to themselves and to the horses in distinct ways. By following these actors in their relational ways of communicating and acting, the body and its embodied dispositions emerge as the common axis at negotiating certain types of contact, command, discipline, and control. In this set, I examine the way in which the relationships between humans and animals, from one side, and the relationships between people with and without disability, from another side, when joined, might shake the notions of “human” and “animal” in their mutual impacts. It is expected that the ethnographic themes presented here may contribute to the transpecies socialities debate.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Juliana Queiroz.pdf: 2001077 bytes, checksum: 8aba3c882bd8bb51ebc93f0eff75c16f (MD5) Previous issue date: 2004-12-29 / This research has as objective to study families of children that have a delay on neuropsicomotor development due to prematurity and that are frequenting an interdisciplinary therapy called equine therapy, a therapeutical approach that has as primordial source the horse and its environment. It was carried through with two children of the Caxangá Golf & Country Club Nucleus of Equine therapy, its respective families and professionals who accompany the children in the therapeutical process. The instruments used consisted of comments of the children in the sessions; interviews with therapists of the institution, with the parents and, when necessary, with other carers. The importance of the bond of the child with the animal was evidenced by its bigger participation in the therapy and by the family investment, as this intervenes positively to the course of the therapy; the importance of the interaction between the child, the team and other practitioners in the socialization process; the adequacy of the stimulations of the equine therapy environment by the interdisciplinary team, as well as the exchanges between them and the family; the knowledge of the child s family history for understanding its behavior and family events; the importance of the child s feedback as to its development in the family to remain investing and believing. An improvement of the child in the socio-affective aspect was perceived, facilitating and being facilitated by the family relations. Therefore, through the research we understood the repercussions of the equine therapy, as well as its intervening elements in the socioaffective development of the child with neuropsicomotor retardation due to prematurity / A pesquisa tem como objeto de estudo famílias com crianças com atraso de desenvolvimento neuropsicomotor devido à prematuridade e que estão em atendimento interdisciplinar em equoterapia, abordagem terapêutica que tem como recurso primordial o cavalo e seu ambiente.

Exploring the Experiences of Adults After Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy (EFP)

Torbett, Deby Kay 01 January 2017 (has links)
The aim of this phenomenological qualitative study was to capture and understand the essence of the lived experiences of individuals after participating in equine facilitated psychotherapy (EFP). In that the experiences of participants after exposure to EFP have not previously been examined, this study adds to the literature on this innovative therapy. Theoretical viewpoints on animal assisted therapy and solution-focused brief therapy (SFBT) were explored, as well as how the SFBT methodology compares to techniques used in EFP. Using interviews, the study involved capturing participants' experiences by collecting their descriptions of their involvement with EFP, identifying the specific experiences they noted, ascertaining what the participants did with these experiences, and discerning themes or patterns in the interview data. A purposive sample of 10 adults who had participated in EFP participated in interviews, the data from which were analyzed by hand coding. Analysis showed improved quality of life with improvements in overall well-being and in participants' relationships. The findings of this research study may lead to additional research in this area and may promote the establishment of consistent techniques in EFP, proper credentialing of those who use EFP, and applicable regulatory standards. By exploring the lived experiences of individuals who have participated in EFP, providers may be able to delve more deeply into the curative factors that may be at work with this type of therapy.

“When he’s up there he’s just happy and content”: parents’ perceptions of therapeutic horseback riding

Boyd, Lauren 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2015 / ENGLISH ABSTRACT : The present research set out to explore parents‟ perceptions of therapeutic horseback riding as an activity for their children with multiple disabilities. It was designed to explore their vicarious experiences of the activity as well as their perceptions of their children‟s experiences of the activity. In order to achieve this, a semi-structured interview was set up with 12 parents whose children participate in therapeutic horseback riding at the South African Riding for the Disabled Association (SARDA) in Constantia, Cape Town. The children ranged in age from 6-17 years and had a range of disabilities including physical and intellectual disabilities. Upon completion of the interviews, the data was transcribed by the researcher and analysed using thematic analysis. Following thematic analysis, three themes emerged: the effects of therapeutic horseback riding on the children, parents‟ personal experiences of therapeutic horseback riding and SARDA, and parents‟ perceived reasons for the improvements in their children. These results are supported by results in existing literature. The results however also address a gap in the existing literature regarding parents‟ perceptions of therapeutic horseback riding and their children‟s experiences of the activity.

Equine therapies in North America, exploring themes in the literature

Routley, Sasha 05 January 2021 (has links)
The field of equine therapy (ET) in Canada and the USA encompasses a range of distinct approaches, such as equine-facilitated therapy, equine-assisted therapy, therapeutic riding, and hippotherapy. Due to issues like inconsistent terminology and lack of standardized practice manuals, there are gaps in the ET knowledge about how these approaches relate or differ from each other. This research reviewed 47 scholarly, peer-reviewed articles about ET approaches and applied thematic analysis to determine key themes that clarify key traits of each approach. Recognizing that children and youth are common participants in equine therapy, this research was motivated by the questions: What type of relational dynamics are modelled for children and youth in ET? How are these horse-human relationships portrayed? Which participants possess their own agency? Findings of this research provide insights about each approach of ET and highlight the therapeutic affects of interspecies relationships between humans and horses. Contradictory viewpoints about mutual agency between species are identified in language that described horses are active, intelligent subjects and/or passive, inanimate objects. This research provides insights about the different forms of ET, highlights important benefits and gaps, and invites the fields of Child and Youth Care and Animal-Assisted Therapy to critically reflect on the relational tensions of employing non-human animals in human therapy. / Graduate

Windlander, Chanel January 2020 (has links)
In a school there is different needs and students with different abilities. Even if there is two school forms in Sweden to meet the needs of everybody, sometimes extra measures is needed for the special needs teacher to get across. There are facilities where people who work there, have animals as co-workers and where the animals act as a pedagogical support in the communication between animal and human. The purpose of this degree project is to scientifically examine what is happening in the communication people and animal that can enrich the lifeworld for the people, especially people who react on situations filled with demands. In the study, it is examined, with an attempt to a phenomenological approach and the help of semi-structured interviews, how the work with people in need of special support.appears according to the people working in various facilities with animals as co-workers. The purpose of the study is to highlight those effects that those who work in these facilities have experienced. These experiences were examined together with what researchers have contributed with already in this field in the world of research. The result shows that both horses and dogs can be of help with the literacy teaching. Animals lower the stress level for humans through touch. The conclusion is that animals have a positive effect as a pedagogical support, especially for people that the traditional school environment didn´t work out as a lerning environment for. In the communication between people and animal an invisible, non-verbal communication emerge, that is undemanding and brings security. Other effects is strengthened self-confidence and that nature experiences together with the animals helps the human back to her true, primordial nature in a digitalized, stressful society.Sökord/
