Equine-Facilitated Therapy and Trauma: Current Knowledge, Future Needs.

Equine-facilitated therapy (EFT) is a relatively new treatment for trauma and PTSD. EFT as well as animal assisted interventions in general have been introduced and implemented in mental health treatment for children and adults, though the research in support of these interventions has not kept up with practice. The purpose of this review is to examine the use of EFT for clients suffering from trauma/PTSD. Studies were included if PTSD/trauma was assessed and/or was measured as an outcome. A search of relevant databases resulted in nine peer-reviewed studies that met criteria. Studies are summarized and implications for future research are discussed. In general, findings suggest that EFT is a promising intervention for trauma/PTSD. Recommendations include a call for more research that includes veterans as well as for research that explicates the mechanisms by which EFT may be effective.

Being a global developmental disorder and knowing its implications for children's lives, emerged the need for new therapies and approaches to address the needs of autistic children has arisen in a way that can fully develop. In this context comes the equine therapy with a proposal of therapy linked to psychomotricity, in which, through psychomotor development, socialization, learning and affectivity, these children can have greater autonomy in the ir lives. In this way, the general objective of this work is to verify the contribution of Equoterapia in the psychomotor development of the child with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) from the perspective of the Physical Education teacher and the Psychologist. As methodology, we applied an open questionnaire to five professionals who work in equine therapy centers in S?o Paulo and work or have worked with children with ASD. For the treatment of the data we used the thematic analysis where we chose five themes (Development of the child with ASD, Psychomotricity, Evaluation, The role of the Horse and Time needed for results). As results we could observe that as the literature states, Equine therapy, under the view of psychologists and physical education teacher, brings affective, cognitive and motor benefits to ASD practitioners, although the centers use heterogeneous approach and evaluative methods. Regardless of the factors questioned in this work, it was evident the dedication of all the professionals involved and, above all, the incredible experience of seeing these children perceiving a new world with the horse and through this the process of self-discovery as people in the world. / RESUMO: Atualmente o Transtorno do Espectro Autista (TEA) vem ganhando maior visibilidade. Tratando-se de um transtorno global do desenvolvimento e, conhecendo suas implica??es para a vida das crian?as, surgiu a necessidade de novas terapias e abordagens para atender as necessidades de crian?as autistas de forma que possam se desenvolver plenamente. Neste contexto surge a Equoterapia com uma proposta de terapia vinculada ? psicomotricidade, na qual, atrav?s do desenvolvimento psicomotor, sociabiliza??o, aprendizado e afetividade, essas crian?as possam ter maior autonomia em suas vidas. Desta forma, o objetivo geral deste trabalho ? verificar a contribui??o da Equoterapia no desenvolvimento psicomotor da crian?a com TEA sob a perspectiva do professor de Educa??o F?sica e do Psic?logo. Como metodologia, aplicamos um question?rio aberto para cinco profissionais que atuam em centros de equoterapia de S?o Paulo e trabalham, ou j? trabalharam, com crian?as com TEA. Para o tratamento dos dados utilizamos a an?lise tem?tica onde escolhemos cinco temas (Desenvolvimento da crian?a com TEA, Psicomotricidade, Avalia??o, O papel do Cavalo e Tempo necess?rio para resultados). Como resultados pudemos observar que assim como a literatura afirma, a Equoterapia, sob a vis?o dos psic?logos e professor de educa??o f?sica, traz benef?cios afetivos, cognitivos e motores para os praticantes com TEA, embora os centros utilizem m?todos de abordagem e avaliativos heterog?neos. Independentemente dos fatores questionados neste trabalho, ficou evidente a dedica??o de todos os profissionais envolvidos e, principalmente, a experi?ncia incr?vel de ver essas crian?as percebendo um mundo novo com o cavalo e atrav?s disso o processo de autodescoberta como pessoas no mundo.

Equine-assisted psychotherapy as an effective therapy in comparison to or in conjunction with traditional therapies

Mental disorders are a prevalent health issue that has an extensive amount of variability in the quantity of disorders, affected populations, and treatment. There are a multitude of approaches or therapeutic methods used by the mental health community. Although each therapy is valuable in unique ways, each therapy may not be suitable to treat every disorder or client. Traditional approaches, such as talk therapy, are effective for certain individuals, whereas some clients may not respond well to any of the traditional talk therapies. When traditional therapies are not working, a referral can be made for a therapy that might suit the client better. Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) is an experiential psychotherapy that has done well not only in assisting typical clients, but also with clients that have had trouble in traditional modes of therapy. This is a collaboration of current works and research in EAP, along with the knowledge base of a current licensed practitioner of EAP. The purpose is to lay out the fundamentals of EAP, which offers a different modality than traditional talk therapies. By crafting a better picture of EAP, perhaps it can kindle further research in its efficacy and guide additional mental health professionals towards this type of therapy.

The Effects of Complementary Hippotherapy for Children with Austism Spectrum Disorder

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is an intricate and complex disorder that continues to grow in its prevalence year after year. The disorder is based on decreased social communication with prevalent stereotypical behaviors and problems in sensory processing. Due to the disorder diagnosis based on a spectrum, each child is different in their severity, and thus requires individualized forms of therapies and treatments. The cause of ASD is unknown, which makes the treatment difficult to standardize. Desperate to find a regimen that benefits their child’s ability to function more successfully, more and more parents are utilizing complementary alternative medicine (CAM). The problem with CAM is lack of evidence that supports using CAM practice. One example of CAM is hippotherapy, which is a type of intervention used by physical, occupational and speech therapists which uses the movements of a horse to address a patient’s impairments physically, emotionally and neurologically. Hippotherapy has been used since the 1960s for a number of disorders. This systematic literature review examines the effects of hippotherapy for children with ASD in regards to increasing social communication and decreasing stereotypical behaviors. The conclusion of the review resulted in conflicting evidence regarding the efficacy of hippotherapy for children with ASD. This inconclusive lack of evidence is generally due to the lack of standardized measurement scales or treatment plans used during each session and small sample sizes.

Posttrauamtic stress disorder can be devastating to those affected by it. Many times it can limit the affected person in his/her daily routins. Equine asssited therapy is an up rising treatment but still there are not enough evidence based research or studies that can confirm its efficacy. There are a lot of different programs with Equine therapy for people with PTSD in the US but it is also used as treatment for other forms of mental illness. The purpose of this litterature study was to obtain knowledge about how efficient Equine therapy as a treatment is for people with PTSD and PTSD related symptoms as a treatment and anxiety. The method to this study is a litterature study that I based on 9 articles. The result showed that Equine therapy may be efficient for peopple with PTSD although some studies were not able to connect scientifically the evidence that the equine therapy in itself was the reason for deacrasing symptoms in PTSD. The conclusion is that after looking in to the studys is that we need more research in the area.

Además, se plantea una serie de terapias comunes y alternativas que ayuden a mejorar las condiciones de los niños, siendo la Equinoterapia el plus a favor de ello. Effectiveness of equine assisted psychotherapy & learning for substance use disorder treatment in college-age young adults

With overdose deaths and residential addiction treatment admittance increasing, more treatment options are necessary to meet the demand of services. Equine assisted psychotherapy and learning (EAPL) is a relatively new therapeutic tool in addiction treatment for individuals battling substance use disorder (SUD), and thus, lacks a solid evidence base to be implemented consistently and effectively. The purpose of this dissertation was to determine the effectiveness of EAPL in creating an emotionally safe environment for learning for college-age young adults with a particular focus on those struggling with SUD. This was accomplished in a series of projects focused on: 1) implementing evaluation methodology for tracking emotional safety and learning in young adults participating in equine interaction activities without therapeutic intentions, 2) determining the relationship between physiological responses and emotional safety and learning in young adults participating in outpatient EAPL programming for SUD, and 3) evaluating the treatment outcomes associated with emotional safety and learning for young adults with SUD participating in EAPL at a residential treatment facility. Each project utilized the same three evaluations for evaluating emotional safety and learning: 1) emotional safety evaluation, 2) equine knowledge exam, and 3) physical skills evaluation. In each of the studies, a correlation was found between emotional safety and equine knowledge and handling skills for college-age young adults, however, equine interaction with therapeutic intentions revealed a stronger correlation indicating it is not just the horse that provides the mental health benefits. An emotionally safe environment for learning, was established for college-age young adults within a residential treatment facility, this was not dependent on the length of stay or level of participation suggesting this is an efficient therapeutic option for SUD for this population. Emotional safety for the college-age young adults participating in EAPL was correlated to vital sign measurements, but vital sign measurements of young adults were independent of the vital signs of the therapy horse. Each of the three projects provided vital information filling the gap of knowledge surrounding EAPL as an effective clinical intervention strategy for SUD in college-age young adults and created a basis for further research using more objective measures.

A pesquisa tem como objeto de estudo famílias com crianças com atraso de desenvolvimento neuropsicomotor devido à prematuridade e que estão em atendimento interdisciplinar em equoterapia, abordagem terapêutica que tem como recurso primordial o cavalo e seu ambiente. Ela foi realizada com duas crianças do Núcleo de Equoterapia do Caxangá Golf & Country Club, suas respectivas famílias e profissionais que acompanham as crianças na equoterapia. Os instrumentos utilizados constaram de observação das crianças nas sessões; entrevista com terapeutas da instituição, com os pais e, quando necessário, outros cuidadores. Foi constatada a importância do vínculo da criança com o animal para sua maior participação na terapia e para o investimento familiar, e como este interfere positivamente no andamento da terapia; a importância da interação entre a criança, a equipe e outros praticantes no processo de socialização; a adequação dos estímulos do ambiente equoterápico pela equipe interdisciplinar, bem como as trocas entre ela e a família; o conhecimento da história da criança para compreensão de seu comportamento e eventos familiares; a importância do feedback da criança quanto ao seu desenvolvimento para o sistema familiar permanecer investindo e acreditando. Percebeu-se melhora da criança no aspecto socioafetivo, facilitando e sendo facilitado pelas relações familiares. Portanto, através da pesquisa puderam ser compreendidas as repercussões da equoterapia, bem como seus elementos intervenientes no desenvolvimento socioafetivo da criança com retardo neuropsicomotor por prematuridade / This research has as objective to study families of children that have a delay on neuropsicomotor development due to prematurity and that are frequenting an interdisciplinary therapy called equine therapy, a therapeutical approach that has as primordial source the horse and its environment. It was carried through with two children of the Caxangá Golf & Country Club Nucleus of Equine therapy, its respective families and professionals who accompany the children in the therapeutical process. The instruments used consisted of comments of the children in the sessions; interviews with therapists of the institution, with the parents and, when necessary, with other carers. The importance of the bond of the child with the animal was evidenced by its bigger participation in the therapy and by the family investment, as this intervenes positively to the course of the therapy; the importance of the interaction between the child, the team and other practitioners in the socialization process; the adequacy of the stimulations of the equine therapy environment by the interdisciplinary team, as well as the exchanges between them and the family; the knowledge of the childs family history for understanding its behavior and family events; the importance of the childs feedback as to its development in the family to remain investing and believing. An improvement of the child in the socio-affective aspect was perceived, facilitating and being facilitated by the family relations. Therefore, through the research we understood the repercussions of the equine therapy, as well as its intervening elements in the socioaffective development of the child with neuropsicomotor retardation due to prematurity
