La réception de la figure d’Achille en Italie et à Rome du IVème siècle avant JC au Ier siècle de notre ère / The reception of Achille’s figure in Italy and Rome in IVth century BC to Ist century AD

De la céramique italiote du IVe siècle av. J.-C., qui reprend et adapte certains épisodes du cycle d’Achille particulièrement liés à l’univers funéraire (Néréides apportant les armes d’Achille, mort de Troïlos, mort de Penthésilée etc…), en insérant dans les scènes figurées des éléments de la culture locale, au mobilier funéraire étrusque (Tombe François, urnes, sarcophages peints et sculptés), en passant par les miroirs et les cistes prénestines des périodes classiques et hellénistiques, l’existence d’une codification et d’une transmission des schémas iconographiques est clairement visible entre les différentes cultures. Au Ier siècle av. J.-C. et au Ier siècle ap. J.-C., certains épisodes du cycle d’Achille continuent à peupler le répertoire figuré, d’autres disparaissent ne correspondant plus aux nouvelles aspirations des commanditaires et d’autres apparaissent, incarnant des valeurs propres à la culture romaine. A Rome, les sources écrites nous informent sur la présence d’Achille dans la sphère publique (temple de Neptune et Saepta Julia). L’usage de la copie et de la diffusion d’un chef-d’œuvre tel le groupe d’Achille et Chiron, s’insèrent dans une volonté d’imiter l’Urbs, centre du monde méditerranéen. Les peintres renouvellent le répertoire iconographique du cycle d’Achille en créant deux épisodes : la Découverte d’Achille à Skyros et Thétis dans les forges d’Héphaïstos. Ces deux épisodes trouvent un grand succès à Rome (Domus Aurea) et sur les parois des demeures pompéiennes et permettent à la figure d’Achille de se détacher du cycle troyen. Ainsi, le héros grec devient grâce aux adaptations stylistiques et techniques des peintres romains le symbole de la paideia tout en conservant son caractère héroïque / The italiote ceramic the fourth century B. C., which incorporates and adapts some episodes cycle Achilles particularly related to posthumous glorification (Nereids bringing the arms of Achilles, Troïlus death, death of Penthesilea, etc…) by inserting the figurative scenes elements of the local culture, in Etruscan funerary (François Tomb, urns, sarcophagi carved and painted) through mirrors an prenestines cysts, Classical and Hellenistic periods, the existence of a consolidation and a transmission of iconographic patterns with clearly visible between different cultures. The first century B. C., and the first century A. D., some episodes of Achilles cycle continue to populate the figurative repertory, others dissapear no longer corresponded to the new aspirations sleeping partners while others appear embodying specific Roman culture values. In Rome, written sources inform us about the presence of Achilles in the public sphere (Temple of Neptune and Saepta Julia). The use of copy and distribution of a masterpiece such as Achilles and Chiron group, are part of a desire to imitate the Urbs, the center Mediterranean world. Painters renew the iconography of Achilles cycle by creating two episodes: The Discovery of Achilles in Skyros and Thetis in the forges of Hephaestus. These two episodes are a big success in Rome (The Golden House) and on the walls of Pompeian houses and allow the figure of Achilles to detach from the Trojan cyle. Thus the Greek hero becomes through stylistic and technical adaptations of Roman painters symbol paideia while maintaining his heroic character.

The Technology of Copper Alloys, Particularly Leaded Bronze, in Greece, its Colonies, and in Etruria during the Iron Age

L’objet de la présente étude est le développement, l’application et la diffusion de la technologie associée à divers types d’alliages de cuivre, en particulier l’alliage du plomb-bronze, en Grèce ancienne, dans ses colonies, ainsi qu’en Étrurie. Le plomb-bronze est un mélange de diverses proportions d’étain, de cuivre et de plomb. Le consensus général chez les archéométallurgistes est que le plomb-bronze n’était pas communément utilisé en Grèce avant la période hellénistique; par conséquent, cet alliage a reçu très peu d’attention dans les documents d’archéologie. Cependant, les analyses métallographiques ont prouvé que les objets composés de plomb ajouté au bronze ont connu une distribution étendue. Ces analyses ont aussi permis de différencier la composition des alliages utilisés dans la fabrication de divers types de bronzes, une preuve tangible que les métallurgistes faisaient la distinction entre les propriétés du bronze d’étain et celles du plomb-bronze. La connaissance de leurs différentes caractéristiques de travail permettait aux travailleurs du bronze de choisir, dans bien des cas, l’alliage approprié pour une utilisation particulière. L’influence des pratiques métallurgiques du Proche-Orient a produit des variations tant dans les formes artistiques que dans les compositions des alliages de bronze grecs durant les périodes géométrique tardive et orientalisante. L’utilisation du plomb-bronze dans des types particuliers d’objets coulés montre une tendance à la hausse à partir de la période orientalisante, culminant dans la période hellénistique tardive, lorsque le bronze à teneur élevée en plomb est devenu un alliage commun. La présente étude analyse les données métallographiques de la catégorie des objets coulés en bronze et en plomb-bronze. Elle démontre que, bien que l’utilisation du plomb-bronze n’était pas aussi commune que celle du bronze d’étain, il s’agissait néanmoins d’un mélange important d’anciennes pratiques métallurgiques. Les ères couvertes sont comprises entre les périodes géométrique et hellénistique. / The subject of this study is the development, application and diffusion of the technology of various types of copper alloys, particularly that of leaded bronze, in ancient Greece, its colonies, and in Etruria. Leaded bronze is a mixture of tin, copper and lead in various proportions. The general consensus among archaeometallurgists is that leaded bronze was not commonly used in Greece until the Hellenistic period, and thus this alloy has not received very much attention in archaeological literature. The use of leaded bronze for particular types of cast objects shows an increasing tendency from the Orientalizing period onwards, culminating in the late Hellenistic period when high-lead bronze became a common alloy. This study analyzes the metallographic data of specific categories of bronze and leaded bronze cast objects, and it will demonstrate that although the use of leaded bronze was not as prevalent as that of tin bronze, it was nevertheless a significant adjunct of ancient metallurgical practices. The periods surveyed range from the Geometric to the Hellenistic periods.

Crossing the Bridge : An Interpretation of the Archaeological Remains in the Etruscan Bridge Complex at San Giovenale, Etruria

<p>This thesis discusses the archaeological remains in the Etruscan bridge complex, found during the excavations at San Giovenale in 1959–1963, and 1999. The aim has been to reach a holistic perspective of the bridge complex with the bridge seen as a link between topography, economy, social relationships, politics, symbols and ritual, reflecting its importance for the whole community at San Giovenale and its surroundings. Situated at the border between the two largest city-states Tarquinia and Caere, the site seems to have been an important middle range transit town for foreign ideas, goods and people. </p><p>The character of the remains and the various levels of contextual analyses made it possible to distinguish five distinctive functions for the structures at the bridge over the Pietrisco. From a more generalised point of view these suggested that specialized functions may be divided into practical, social and symbolic functions and these aspects have been of help in identifying an object or a structure. Besides practical functions of everyday use, economic and strategic functions have also been considered. </p><p>These functions were more or less in use contemporaneously, at least during several hundred years, from about the middle of the 6th down to the first century B.C. Pottery and small finds show that some activity has taken place at the site from the 9th century. Features of continuity, such as in the choice of crossing, the direction of the bridge construction after its destruction, the architectural ground-plans, the use of basins and a well, pottery fabrics of local and Greek imports and shapes, as well as changes in ground-plans, slight changes in the environment due to water erosion, earth-quakes and slides, have been observed. The physical as well as the liminal boundary between land and water as well as between man and spirits was accentuated by the tufa building, the water installations, and the road at the northern abutment. The thesis raises the hypothesis that the Etruscans believed that a crossing of a river via a bridge could violate the spirits of nature on land and in the water and therefore special rites were needed to restore the balance between nature and man before entering the bridge in order to reach safely at the other side of the ravine. The bridge itself can be seen as sacred, a liminal area where time and space do not exist and a place where it is easy to gain contact with the supernatural world. </p>

Le kyathos attique de Madame Teithurnai: échanges artisanaux et interactions culturelles entre Grecs et Etrusques en Méditerranée archaïque

The research project concerned cultural and economic transfers between the Etruscan world and Attica during the Archaic period and focused on the copy and the adaptation of Etruscan vase shapes by some potters of the Athenian Kerameikos. This being a vast and known subject, it was decided to concentrate on the case study of one shape, the kyathos, for which a large range of aspects were studied: the origins and typology of the shape in Etruria and its variants according to regional tastes. Etruscan black-figure productions are also included. The research then moved on the Attic shores and proposed a study of Attic kyathos shapes (compared to the Etruscan models) and tried to identify workshops and potters’ shaping habits. This approach is close to H. Bloesch and E. A. Mackay studies, but also to C. Orton’s system of “envelopes”. In another chapter of the work, several aspects such as the contexts, distribution, uses, functions and manipulation of the kyathoi (both Etruscan and Attic) have been studied. In another part of the thesis, I drew a synthesis about other Etruscan shapes copied in Athens. Their situation has been compared with the kyathos. In this way, I tried to demonstrate the different aspects and phenomena which lead to these copies of foreign shapes in Athens (and the Etruscan demand for them).
