Various studies of asset markets have shown that traders are capable of learning and transmitting information through prices in many situations. In this paper we replace human traders with intelligent software agents in a series of simulated markets. Using these simple learning agents, we are able to replicate several features of the experiments with human subjects, regarding (1) dissemination of information from informed to uninformed traders, and (2) aggregation of information spread over different traders.

Introduction: Little is known about the effect of beliefs on whiplash-associated disorders.
Objective: To assess population beliefs regarding whiplash injury, to assess expectation as a predictor of recovery; to explore symptom attribution (Study III); and, assess the relationship between the Whiplash Disability Questionnaire (WDQ) and self-assessed recovery.
Materials and Methods: Canadian residents were surveyed about whiplash injury; a whiplash cohort was assessed for association between expectations of recovery and recovery; whiplash patients were examined to correlate auditory symptoms and cerumen occlusion; and, Whiplash patients were asked a global recovery question and results compared to the whiplash Disability Questionnaire (WDQ).
Results: Beliefs about whiplash injury were more negative. Expectations of recovery from injury increases the recovery rate. Cerumen explains auditory symptoms in whiplash patients. Patients responding yes to the recovery question had a low WDQ score.
Conclusions: Population beliefs, expectations of recovery and symptom attribution are important in whiplash-associated disorders. / Experimental Medicine

Factors Related to Student Persistence in a New Residential STEM High School: The Case of the Tennessee Governor’s Academy for Mathematics and ScienceSullins, Amy Cinci 01 May 2010 (has links)
Public and private sectors are grappling with decreasing numbers of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) professionals as the need for them rises. State-supported STEM residential high schools may be the premier conduit to educate and socialize students in order to prepare for STEM college majors and careers. Gaining understanding of how these schools can nurture students academically and affectively so that they successfully matriculate to university STEM settings is valuable; however, minimal research exists related to the affective domain in relationship to retention at state-supported STEM residential schools. This exploratory, mixed methods case study describes factors that contribute to student persistence in a residential school setting.
This study had four purposes: a) to describe students’ meaning of belonging at a STEM residential school; b) to explore potential relationships between students’ personality traits, expectations fulfillment, and belonging; c) to explore potential relationships between belonging and persistence, expectation fulfillment and persistence, and personality traits and persistence, and d) to describe characteristics of persistors and non-persistors. Participants in the study were the student population of the Tennessee Governor’s Academy for Mathematics and Science (TGA) (n = 41). Following interviews of the population, qualitative analysis of the interviews included pattern coding and creation of an explanatory effects matrix; quantitative analysis of survey data utilized ANOVA, chi-square, and correlation. Results of analyses produced a student-generated, multidimensional definition of belonging and showed that students who perceived they belonged and expressed institutional commitment via ownership of TGA had the highest persistence rate (100%). Quantitative findings showed that students whose expectations for TGA were met or exceeded had a higher sense of belonging, and belonging was associated with higher persistence. The personality traits agreeableness, conscientiousness, openness, and work drive were significantly related to belonging, suggesting that sense of belonging may function as a moderator between personality traits and expectation fulfillment.
For future study, a longitudinal design is recommended as well as incorporation of the variable educational practices in relation to the variables expectation fulfillment, personality, belonging, and persistence.

Four facets of the relation of tragedy to dialectic and the theme of crisis of expectationsHaris, Muhammad 15 May 2009 (has links)
As a whole, this work serves to illuminate the tragic as a fundamental human phenomenon and an objective fact that is distinct not only from comedy and irony but from other forms of calamity and modes of failure. I consider three distinct sources of philosophical knowledge on tragedy. The first is tragic drama and literature, the second is the theory of the tragic and the third source consists of the employment of the concept of tragedy to discuss events or characters that one encounters in life. I carefully draw upon the first two sources to thicken the elaborations of four different facets of the third. In this process, I extrapolate Szondi’s notion that tragedy is a specific dialectic in a specific space. In the course of this work, I place a greater emphasis upon this general concept of the tragic as opposed to a poetics of tragedy. The dissertation bears out, however, that it is ultimately poetics - and not the dialectic as general concept - that provide us with the richer insights into tragedy as it unravels in life. The specific dialectic of tragedy unravels so as to cause the irreplaceable loss of something of great value. This provides me with a structuring element that ties the four central chapters together. In terms of content, I emphasize also upon the tragic flaw as a set of character traits (manifested by an individual or some form of collective) which keep tragedy in place. The consideration of the figure of Willy Loman allows me to examine the tragedy of failure of expectations which is a distinct category of the tragic and yet it oscillates such that ties together the other themes. A central idea that emerges from an analysis of the overlapping themes is that prior to tragedy is the investment of the deepest inner resources into a process. This investment gives rise to identity and to expectations. As a tragedy unfolds, the source of the identity or of expectation becomes also the birth place or the generator of all threats to this identity and the collapse of long nurtured expectations.

<p>This thesis is discussing and analysing expectations and perceptions about service quality in Destination Gotland. The aim is to analyze and research about the role of service quality for creating customer satisfaction and we want to find out the gap between expectations and perceptions through the customers point of view. The difference between expectations and perceptions can be described as satisfaction or lack of satisfaction. The specific questions that are researched in this thesis are:<strong> </strong></p><ol><li>What expectations does customer have on Destination Gotland’s service quality to become satisfied?</li><li>What perceptions does customer have about the service quality at Destination Gotland?</li><li>What are the differences between expectations and perceptions (gap 5 in the SERVQUAL-model)?</li></ol><p>The survey is constructed as a case-study and is based on the quantitative method. The results from the different dimensions show that there is a gap between expectations and perceptions which means that the customers are not fully satisfied about the service quality at Destination Gotland. On the other hand, the main respondents said yes on the question if they think the service meet their expectations. From the overall result in the statements we can see that there are several gaps between expectations and perceptions which means that the service quality do not fully meet the expectations. The result shows a total gap at -0,39.</p>

Vor allem durch die Ereignisse der Finanzkrise der letzten Monate nahm die Diskussion um den Einfluss solch psychologisch basierter Faktoren zu. Die schillernden Begriffe wie Beurteilungen oder Erwartungen müssen zunächst quantifiziert werden, eine Aufgabe, die in der Regel von Forschungsinstituten wie Ifo, ZEW oder Eurostat übernommen wird. Dieser Diskussionsbeitrag untersucht, welche Möglichkeiten bestehen, die aktuellen Beurteilungen und zukünftigen Erwartungen in der Wirtschaft zu messen und wie dies konkret realisiert wird. Die Arbeit umfasst eine Datenbeschreibung und eine weitergehende Datenanalyse, in der die Zusammenhänge und Entwicklungen der einzelnen Zeitreihen untersucht werden. Eine der bedeutendsten Fragestellungen ist die Qualität und Reichwerte der Prognosekraft der Erwartungen für spätere Zeithorizonte. Ein internationaler Vergleich zwischen Deutschland und ausgewählten Länder der Europäischen Union sollen einen Überblick über die gemeinsame Entwicklung verschaffen. Sentiments or expectations are a fundamental element in theoretic economic science but there is still not sufficient empirical work in that subject. Actual Sentiments or future expectations are often considered vague theoretic constructs which should be represented by latent variables in empirical science. The manifest data could be obtained by German research institutes as Ifo, ZEW or Eurostat. Questions include the predictive power of expectations and an international comparison of the German with the European development of sentiments over the last 20 years.

Diese Forschungsarbeit widmet sich der Analyse von Stimmungen und Erwartungen im System der Märkte mit Dynamic Partial Least Squares (DPLS) Modellen. Die Analyse komplexer Systeme mit umfangreichen Datensätzen und die Erkennung relevanter Muster erfordern die Verwendung moderner statistischer Verfahren. DPLS-Modelle, eine Variante der Strukturgleichungs-modelle mit Latenten Variablen, werden methodisch erweitert, um mehrere zeitliche Verzögerungsstufen gleichzeitig modellieren zu können. Die ökonometrischen Modelle versuchen, zahlreiche latente Einflussfaktoren und ihre verdeckten Beziehungen zu identifizieren. Als Daten werden rund 80 Indikatoren verwendet von Januar 1991 bis Juni 2010, um Stimmungen, Erwartungen und wirtschaftlich relevanten Größen zu operationalisieren und die Zusammenhänge detailliert zu untersuchen. Die Modellergebnisse zeigen, dass Stimmungen, also die Einschätzung der aktuellen wirtschaftlichen Lage, deutlich mit wirtschaftlichen Größen zusammenhängen, unter anderem mit Investitionen, Auftragseingängen oder Aktienmarktentwicklungen. Die Erwartungen, also die Einschätzung der zukünftigen Entwicklung, bieten eine mittlere bis schwache Prognosekraft für sechs bis maximal achtzehn Monate in die Zukunft. Für kürzere Zeiträume von sechs Monaten sind Stimmungen und Erwartungen die besten verfügbaren Prognosevariablen. Die Analyse der Modellabweichungen erlaubt Rückschlüsse auf wirtschaftstheoretische Konzepte, wie Rationalität der Erwartungen. Auffällig sind scheinbare Phasen der systematischen Über- und Unterbewertungen der aktuellen Situation oder zukünftigen Entwicklung, insbesondere vor und nach Krisensituationen. Die Ergebnisse dieser Arbeit geben somit einen erweiterten Einblick in die empirischen Zusammenhänge subjektiver Einschätzungen mit realen wirtschaftlichen Größen. / This research thesis is devoted to the analysis of sentiments and expectations in the system of economic markets with Dynamic Partial Least Squares (DPLS) models with time-series. The analysis of complex systems with large data sets and discovering relevant patterns require the use of modern statistical methods. The DPLS models, a variant of structural equation models with latent variables, are methodically extended to include multiple lags simultaneously. The econometric models try to identify a large number of latent factors and their unobservable relations. The data consists of about 80 indicators from January 1991 to June 2010 to quantify sentiments, expectations and economically relevant variables and examine the relations in detail. The results show, that the sentiments, the assessment of the current economic situation, are clearly linked with economic variables like investments, incoming orders and stock market developments. The expectations, the assessment of future development, provide a weak to moderate predictive power for up to 18 months in the future. For shorter periods of six months sentiments and expectations are the best available forecast variables. The analysis of model deviations allows to draw conclusions about theoretical concepts such as rationality of expectations. There seem to be phases of systematic over- and undervaluation of the current situation and future development, especially before and after economic crisis. The results should provide a deeper insight into the empirical relationships between subjective assessments and real economic variables.

Hope and Despair : Philosophy of life, expectations and optimism in cancer patients and their spousesWinterling, Jeanette January 2007 (has links)
The general aim was to explore philosophy of life, expectations and optimism in patients and spouses in two different cancer situations, and to determine whether these aspects had relevance for psychological distress and quality of life. The first situation was being newly diagnosed with advanced cancer. Data on philosophy of life, optimism and psychological distress were gathered on one occasion (I). In addition, changes in life were described using a qualitative approach in a sub-sample (II). The second situation was having completed curative cancer treatment. Data on expectations for the recovery period, optimism, psychological distress and quality of life were gathered on three occasions (III). Moreover, expectations and how these turned out were described using a qualitative approach in a sub-sample (IV). The results show that being diagnosed with an advanced cancer influenced aspects of patients’ and spouses’ philosophy of life, including that existential questions were common and were related to higher psychological distress (I). All experienced substantial mental changes in life, often also physical, practical and sometimes positive changes. Patients more often seemed to accept their situation and prepared themselves for death, whereas spouses had more difficulties in handling the situation (II). Patients who had completed curative treatment generally had higher expectations for the recovery period than did their spouses, and patients expectations were fulfilled to a lesser degree, however, this generally had little importance for psychological distress or quality of life (III). Patients’ expectation for their recovery period was generally that they would get well. For those whose recovery period had been tough, expectations were often unfulfilled, but they were often satisfied with their current life anyway owing to positive changes (IV). Being optimistic was the most beneficial for decreased psychological distress in both samples, as well as for better quality of life in the recovery group (I, III).

Expectations and experiences of career counselling : an exploration of interpersonal behaviourSchedin, Gunnar January 2007 (has links)
The overall purpose of this thesis is to describe and analyse interpersonal behaviour in career counselling sessions. The importance of the relationship in counselling for the outcome of sessions has been acknowledged in earlier research. How the actual interaction process between client and career counsellor looks like has been sparsely investigated. The present research explores expected, experienced behaviours and self-image of 15 adolescent clients’ and counsellors’ dyads in career counselling. The research was guided by interpersonal theory and the model of structural analysis of social behaviour (SASB) developed by Lorna Smith Benjamin. The research focuses on four different aspect of interpersonal behaviour. First, the significance of different behaviours by the clients and the career counsellors related to session evaluation. Second, the significance of expected and experienced similarity in perceptions of self and other behaviours related to session evaluation. Third, differences of perceived behaviours and possible influence by self-image over the course of sessions and fourth, comparing the influence of positive and negative self-image to expected and experienced behaviours, perceived important events during session and session evaluation session by clients’. Results indicate the importance for clients to become close to the career counsellor in session, while the career counsellors’ encouragement of clients’ independency during sessions showed to be of less importance for the clients’. This pattern imply a difficult balance act for career counsellors between providing a safe and close relationship and promoting independence and exploration for the clients. Further, it was found that career counsellors had difficulties in identifying their own contributions to a positive session evaluation, indicating a problem for the career counsellors’ to make conscious adjustments of behaviours. The degree to which client and career counsellor agreed of their behaviours only mattered for experiences of the career counsellors’ behaviour when related to their evaluation of session. Only minor tendencies of influence by the career counsellors’ self-image of clients’ perceived differences in behaviours were found. Self-image played a significant role in how the clients’ expected and experienced behaviours, perceived important events in session and in their session evaluation. Clients’ with positive self-image showed consistently more positive perceptions on each of the involved variables.
