School Counselor Advocacy: Postsecondary Planning for Adolescents Experiencing Emotional Disturbances in Urban Environments

Rowley, Patrick James 14 June 2017 (has links)
While research studies have investigated postsecondary planning for high-need student populations, few studies have explored the intersectionality of students experiencing emotional disturbances and students living in urban environments and the postsecondary planning perspectives of school counselors with this demographic. The purpose of this study was to explore the current perspectives, practices, and experiences of 10 high schools counselors working within a large school district of the northeastern U.S. on postsecondary planning with students experiencing emotional disturbances in urban environments. An ecological perspective framed the discussion to provide a holistic picture of the postsecondary needs of adolescents experiencing emotional disturbances in urban environments. Using a constructivist grounded theory qualitative approach; themes emerged and provided a voice to urban high school counselors on the concepts related to the postsecondary planning process. Two primary themes were attributed to the postsecondary planning perspectives of urban high school counselors with each theme including three sub-themes. Elements hindering postsecondary planning included (1) school resources, (2) poor parent engagement, and (3) higher-level needs; while elements supporting postsecondary planning incorporated (1) school personnel, (2) high parent engagement, and (3) computer-based planning resources. Three themes were linked to the postsecondary planning practices of urban high school counselors: (1) college campus connection, (2) information dissemination, and (3) student-counselor connection. Three themes were also associated with the postsecondary planning experiences of urban high school counselors: (1) learning from mistakes, (2) planning multiple options, and (3) similar planning for all students. These eight primary themes and six sub-themes provide evidence that offers a greater understanding of the postsecondary planning process for students experiencing emotional disturbances in urban environments. Implications for school counselors, counselor educators, and higher education support staff are presented. Study limitations are discussed and recommendations for future research ideas are suggested. By conducting research on this underserved student population, the emerging themes intend to create more equitable postsecondary planning procedures for students experiencing emotional disturbances in urban environments / Ed. D. / High school aged students experience increased pressure to succeed, as greater attention is committed towards postsecondary planning in later grades. For high-need adolescent student populations various barriers to postsecondary planning may hinder their ability to envision successful postsecondary futures. Students experiencing emotional disturbances living in urban environments may potentially encounter numerous barriers to postsecondary planning from a personal perspective as well contexts within the home, school, and community. By comprehending potential barriers according to each of these contexts for students experiencing emotional disturbances living in urban environments, school counselors can be better prepared to assist this high-need student population in overcoming barriers and realizing postsecondary success. This research study examines the postsecondary planning perspectives, practices, and experiences of urban school counselors assisting students with emotional disturbances. A better understanding of the lived experiences of urban school counselors contributes to more effective postsecondary planning, specifically for students experiencing emotional disturbances, thereby attending to an underserved student population. Results of this research study offers insight into barriers and supports that could improve postsecondary planning by school counselors for all high-need student populations.

Understanding the Role Street Medicine Programs Play in the Career Trajectories of Student Volunteers Who Choose to Work with Underserved Populations

Smith-Graham, Sydney 06 January 2017 (has links)
INTRODUCTION: Street medicine programs utilize a nontraditional healthcare model to provide care to populations experiencing homelessness. Through street medicine programs, clinicians take to the streets to offer services to individuals who are living unsheltered. Many street medicine programs offer health professional students the opportunity to volunteer and provide care to this vulnerable population. AIM: This exploratory study aimed to answer the following question: what influence does volunteering with a street medicine program have on the career trajectories of student volunteers who ultimately choose to work with medically underserved populations (MUPs)? METHODS: This study used an exploratory mixed methods approach to answering the research question. The core ideas that emerged from the qualitative data collected from street medicine student volunteers were used to inform the development of a web-based survey administered to a broader, national sample of street medicine student volunteers. The survey included closed- and opened- ended questions, as well as demographic questions. The Health Professionals’ Attitude Towards the Homeless Inventory (HPATHI; Buck et al., 2005) questionnaire was embedded into the survey to measure students’ attitudes towards the population experiencing homelessness before and after volunteering with a street medicine program. RESULTS: The results suggested that 15 (65.22%) of the 23 participants who completed the web-based survey reported that volunteering with a street medicine program influenced their decision to ultimately work with MUPs. Of the 19 participants who provided qualitative feedback, 7 (36.84%) mentioned that their decision to work with MUPs was influenced by their increased exposure and awareness to the barriers and needs of MUPs while volunteering with a street medicine program. Additionally, 6 (31.58%) participants mentioned that their previous decision to work with MUPs was reinforced while volunteering with a street medicine program. CONCLUSION: Volunteering with a street medicine program appears to help motivate students to work with MUPs. Incorporating opportunities to volunteer with a street medicine program into current health professional school curriculum has the potential to impact a greater network of students, as well as influence decisions regarding the students’ careers.

PEOPLE EXPERIENCING HOMELESSNESS WITHIN MUSIC THERAPY SETTINGS: A DESCRIPTIVE STUDY

Ehmling, Amelia E. 01 January 2018 (has links)
The population of people experiencing homelessness has decreased less than 15% in the last ten years, but issues like mental illness and substance use are rising. There are many misconceptions about race, gender, location and age of people experiencing homelessness. Music therapy research about the homeless population is minimal and often focused on just one setting or treatment location. The purpose of this study was to better understand the relationship between music therapists and people experiencing homelessness. A survey of 365 music therapists in the United States revealed just under half of working clinicians provide services to people experiencing homelessness. Results from the survey revealed the most common settings where music therapists provided service to people experiencing homelessness were mental health, medical, and school systems. Additionally, the results discussed people experiencing homelessness’ demographic differences in clinician’s experiences versus annual reports. Results are not to be generalized but to be used as a tool to better understand people experiencing homelessness.

Being, Becoming and Belonging: The Phenomenological Essence of Spiritual Leisure Experiences

Schmidt, Christopher Michael, n/a January 2005 (has links)
This study reports on an investigation into individuals’ experiences of spiritual leisure. Though there is a range of literature and research that examines the independent concepts of leisure and spirituality, there continues to be a lack of empirical research into the existence and experience of leisure that may be spiritual. Given that both traditional and ongoing understandings of leisure emphasise their impact on the whole of the person, this lack of attention to the spiritual dimension creates a gap in our understanding. Leisure is increasingly seen as having a role to play in human well-being. What is less well known is the role and place of spirituality in that interplay. It is recognised that a sense of spirituality can be accessed in a diversity of ways, through, for example prayer, meditation and an engagement with sacred places. The spiritual forum of leisure however, remains less acknowledged and understood despite the fact that spiritual benefits have been identified as part of leisure participation. The purpose of this study was to develop insight into the existence and nature of this relationship by exploring the phenomenon of spiritual leisure experiences. As a primary research focus, this topic is rarely directly considered. Rather it is most often raised as an anecdotal benefit of leisure, a philosophical potential for leisure, or more recently, a component of people’s spiritual and general well-being. Based on personal interest, informed by intuition and grounded in the theoretical and philosophical concepts of leisure and spirituality, this study sought to fill some gaps in our understandings of spiritual leisure experiences. Using a phenomenological approach, this descriptive, qualitative study aimed to explore the subjective meanings individuals give to experiences they refer to as spiritual leisure. Thus, 24 co-researchers were invited to share their self-defined spiritual leisure experiences, through open, unstructured interviews and reflective journaling. The leisure experiences the co-researchers described as spiritual occurred within various locations and involved multiple contexts. These included social and solo experiences, nature based or urban environments and active or passive pursuits. Reflective of what happened, the descriptions of the co-researchers revealed that spiritual leisure experiences could vary in situation, conditions, activity and contexts. The meanings behind these descriptions were also sought and three groupings of common themes were recognised: namely triggers; responses and outcomes. These structural components of spiritual leisure were interrelated in the co-researchers conscious understandings and represented a suite of feelings, thoughts, sensations and meanings embedded in the context, actions and locations of their leisure. Finally, the research included an exploration of the underlying essences of the experiences. Five interrelated essences of spiritual leisure emerged representing the phenomenon of spiritual leisure. These were: experiencing self; time and space for self; being; becoming; and belonging. Overall, the results demonstrated that experiences of leisure that were spiritual were evident for the 24 co-researchers. The experience of spiritual leisure was understood as an event that was lived physically, emotionally and affectively and while it varied in context it also shared the characteristics of providing a forum for knowing, being and becoming more of the self. In spiritual leisure, individuals found a life-space in which to discover and know aspects of themselves and to feel a sense of belonging. This study clearly identifies leisure as a valuable and edifying aspect of some people’s lives in relation to developing their spiritual self or for experiencing their spirituality. The essential themes remind us of the true potential leisure can have in people’s lives. More broadly, the study acknowledges the nature of spiritual leisure, its structural components and the value of studying the phenomenon from the perspective of the experiencing person.

It is characterized because it was a quantitative and qualitative research (LIMA, BRAZ CLEMENTINO, 2012), as obtained quantitative and qualitative data. It was considered a great sound variety found in this teaching model, on the assumption that the experience and practice of modalism, used as thematic resource in the music curriculum, enriches the process of musical creation. Had as theoretical basis authors Ermelinda Paz (1990), Helio Sena (1990), José Geraldo Souza (1959) and Ian Guest (2010). The experiment was performed through sessions, classes in Musical Language discipline, curriculum component of Professional Education Center of music courses in Arts Basileu France in Goiania; with 10 subjects adolescents and adults; among them, three violinists, one trumpeter, one drummer, two keyboardists, two pianists and one guitarist. The experience resulted in 8 modal compositions of students and a teaching recital of these compositions, played by the composers themselves. Data collection for the final analysis was performed using Protocols (researcher's notes on the classes), Pre-tests and Post-tests; Questionnaires completed by participants subject; and filming which recorded sessions-classes. They were evaluated by a jury composed. The collected data found the established criteria, as the evidence of learning, written reviews, to auditory perception; as well as the factors identified in the records of modal compositions resulting from the creation of the subjects; included the results of the Final Recital. The Evaluation Criteria established a priori observed: 1 - learning of the contents; 2 - The written evaluations; 3 - auditory perception; 4 - modal compositions; 5 - the final recital; 6 - the pre-test; all resulting from the sessionsclasses and described in the Protocols, which served as an object of reflection. Such proposals analyzes aimed detect all from the works returns in Experiencing-Action, considering the process of creative teaching, important and / or unusual elements that led students to create in the classroom. Therefore, from the theoretical assumptions and hypothesis that teach modalism leads to improvement of the teaching of Musical Language course, this analysis was consolidated. The implementation of modal compositions of students, constituted important evidence in the composition of the collected data; and the consolidation of the results of the comparison of pre- and post-tests, the answers to the questionnaires, the jury's assessment of returns (which guaranteed the exemption in observation of teaching / learning process as a whole) and the recital of compositions (time positive reinforcement for the subjects participants). The results of pre-tests it was found that the subjects initially had no knowledge of Modes, but all of the correct answers in the questions above 50%, indicated that brought musical knowledge baggage; post-tests indicated that absorption of the theoretical content and the development of auditory perception. In the final questionnaires, it was found that the subjects were satisfied with the musical experience with proposed modal content and specific assessment of the Mixolydian Mode, given the influence and the identity of popular and folk songs highlighted. The jury indicated the satisfaction of subjects with musical creation from the domain of the modes and student satisfaction with the creations presented in the final recital.

Beginning with a structured script, we carried out a series of tests with Projectile Launcher Thermodynamic (LTP). The results of the tests suggested the need to turn the trial into experiencing, semi-structured script. This could lead students to build / understand the basic concept of energy transfer processes and energy losses occurring during the tests, based on thermochemical and thermodynamic principles and studying them in an integrated manner. Performing activities in counter-period with students soon realized the difficulty in understanding certain aspects of these semi-structured procedure, which led us to begin the process of experiencing with a lecture on heat engines and other relevant aspects of the history of Sciences. To determine whether the process of experiencing and classroom instruction exerted some influence on the process of teaching / learning, a class was divided into three groups: the first group (G1) - control - did not participate in class or experiencing, responding to matter relating to the subject in compulsory Essay bimonthly review from knowledge obtained during regular classes; the second group (G2) that the whole process, not only attended the lecture and the third group (G3) who fulfilled all stages of the process. It was noted that the theoretical class and change the type of script enabled the expansion of the elements of cognition, constituting thus on factors that facilitate learning, which may be suggested by the average performance of students in each group / Mestrado / Físico-Química / Mestre em Química

Att läka från traumatisering : - att komma ur fryspunkten med psykosomatisk behandling / To heal from traumatization : - to get out of the freezing point with psychosomatic treatment

Marcus, Svedberg, Weronika, Swarzynska January 2022 (has links)

André, Joslyne Vierginat 02 1900 (has links)
This research analyses the following problematic: school-family collaboration and school success in Haiti. By contrasting cases of diverse social and academic profiles, it examines the points of view of various actors involved in education, as much at the formal as at the informal level: 14 students, 7 teachers, 7 members involved in school leadership, 2 pedagogical counselors, and 6 others involved in schools (priests, psychologists, sociologist, doctor). A multiple-case ethno-biographical approach based on depth interviews allowed for the cross-referencing of these actors concerning the academic course of 14 students found in 8 different schools from both the private and public sectors, and with as many cases of success and of failure among the 14 students. In line with the problematic given at the beginning of this thesis, the participants in our research all confirmed the vulnerability of the Haitian social context and its repercussions on the school system: sociopolitical instability and insecurity, and socio-economic precariousness. This situation has transformed familiar structures. The school system, mostly private, is limited in its capacity to absorb students, in its human resources, in its material infrastructures, and in its programs for initial and ongoing training of its personnel. As such, it is a school system that can only support with difficulty the learning of its students. Besides that, the double-language situation (creole-french) found in society and in schools slows somewhat the progress of students. Over and above what actors evoke as social elements that are at stake here, daily life in school appears, according to their conversations, as a place of resilience for the students, a place that inspires change and one that is key to all future social mobility. Nevertheless, education is part of a societal project wherein school success should mobilize the collaboration of all actors. There follows a need for a greater mobilization of the young themselves regarding the task of a student, and of shared understanding of parenting among protagonists. Results also show the importance of social synergy around school, one based on the cooperation of all to the benefit of student learning. In Haiti, school-family collaboration is more complex that in other national contexts. Here, to begin with, families are the most important financial source of education in the country because of the hegemony of private schools and of the insufficient State support for the functioning of schools. Also, parents of students and their children, even those experiencing academic difficulty, place great trust in the school and have great hope of improving their lot thanks to success in school. However, objective constraints of all kinds prevent the majority of parents from following students academincally at the level of the needs of the students and of the expectations of the school. Congruent with research in other national contexts, school-family collaboration is shown to be more complicated in the case of parents distant from the school culture, and the most problematic school histories of students are those where parental support and concern seem to be the weakest. In the Haitian context, one fact remains as a major preoccupation: the incapacity of schools to compensate for the precariousness of the lives of students and parents by an efficient mobilization of their capital (commitment of personnel to the success of students; availability of material, pedagogical, and didactic infrastructures, ongoing training of teachers, etc.). We note, too, the differing levels of expectations reciprocally formulated.
