Mathematical Expression Recognition based on Probabilistic GrammarsÁlvaro Muñoz, Francisco 15 June 2015 (has links)
[EN] Mathematical notation is well-known and used all over the
world. Humankind has evolved from simple methods representing
countings to current well-defined math notation able to account for
complex problems. Furthermore, mathematical expressions constitute a
universal language in scientific fields, and many information
resources containing mathematics have been created during the last
decades. However, in order to efficiently access all that information,
scientific documents have to be digitized or produced directly in
electronic formats.
Although most people is able to understand and produce mathematical
information, introducing math expressions into electronic devices
requires learning specific notations or using editors. Automatic
recognition of mathematical expressions aims at filling this gap
between the knowledge of a person and the input accepted by
computers. This way, printed documents containing math expressions
could be automatically digitized, and handwriting could be used for
direct input of math notation into electronic devices.
This thesis is devoted to develop an approach for mathematical
expression recognition. In this document we propose an approach for
recognizing any type of mathematical expression (printed or
handwritten) based on probabilistic grammars. In order to do so, we
develop the formal statistical framework such that derives several
probability distributions. Along the document, we deal with the
definition and estimation of all these probabilistic sources of
information. Finally, we define the parsing algorithm that globally
computes the most probable mathematical expression for a given input
according to the statistical framework.
An important point in this study is to provide objective performance
evaluation and report results using public data and standard
metrics. We inspected the problems of automatic evaluation in this
field and looked for the best solutions. We also report several
experiments using public databases and we participated in several
international competitions. Furthermore, we have released most of the
software developed in this thesis as open source.
We also explore some of the applications of mathematical expression
recognition. In addition to the direct applications of transcription
and digitization, we report two important proposals. First, we
developed mucaptcha, a method to tell humans and computers apart by
means of math handwriting input, which represents a novel application
of math expression recognition. Second, we tackled the problem of
layout analysis of structured documents using the statistical
framework developed in this thesis, because both are two-dimensional
problems that can be modeled with probabilistic grammars.
The approach developed in this thesis for mathematical expression
recognition has obtained good results at different levels. It has
produced several scientific publications in international conferences
and journals, and has been awarded in international competitions.

Ladles and Jellyspoons: Phonology, meet Semantics, and play nice! : A spotlight on binomial expressions with a side of politics, prose and patriarchyTwomey, Helen January 2024 (has links)
Our everyday discourse is peppered with mini expressions known as binomials. They are engaging and rhythmic, and easily recalled; so much so that some have become a single entity of themselves such as ladies and gentlemen or bread and butter, while others are reversible or fluid such as night and day/day and night. Factors that contribute to the construction of word pairings are phonology and semantics, the balance beam of sound and rhythm versus its raison d'être. Some fixed binomial expressions have been seen to reverse over time from a rigid, fixed pairing to a fluid, mutable pair. The idea for this paper was prompted by a tweet that discussed the reversal of a previously fixed gender binomial —aunts and uncles began to change one hundred years ago from its earlier form of uncles and aunts. This binomial also had the audacity to flout the gender preference of the male lead, which made the phenomenon intriguing to follow. The aim of this paper is to look at particular word pairs, gendered and otherwise, to see how fixed or fluid they are over time, as well as to understand what determines change. The analysis includes previous research as well as corpus analysis to follow word pairs over time. Factors that contribute to change, particularly in gendered binomials, include politics and patriarchy, but perhaps more importantly, it is our own influence. Ultimately the balance is shifted by us; we affect change in our language through our discourse, pushing the lexical social influencers up the popularity ladder, giving the words in the first position an advantage in our collective memory through frequency, or in other words, cognitive accessibility.

Electronic Customer Knowledge Management Systems : a multimodal interaction approach : an empirical investigation into the role of the multimodal interaction metaphors to improve usability of Electronic Customer Knowledge Management Systems (ECKMS) and increase the user's trust, knowledge and acceptanceAlotaibi, Mutlaq Bader Gublan January 2009 (has links)
There has been an increasing demand for commercial organisations to foster real-time interaction with customers, because harnessing customer competencies has been shown to be a major contributor towards various benefits, such as growth, innovation and competition. This may drive organisations to embrace the development of multimodal interaction and complement Electronic Customer Knowledge Management Systems (E-CKMS) with metaphors of audio-visual nature. Although the implementation of E-CKMS encounters several challenges, such as lack of trust and information overload, few empirical studies were devoted to assess the role of audio-visual metaphors, and investigate whether these technologies can be put into practice. Therefore, this thesis describes a comparative evaluation study carried out to examine the implication of incorporating multimodal metaphors into E-CKMS interfaces on not only usability of E-CKMS, but also the user's trust, knowledge and acceptance. An experimental E-CKMS platform was implemented with three different modes of interaction: Visual-only E-CKMS (VCKMS) with text and graphics, Multimodal E-CKMS (MCKMS) with speech, earcons and auditory icons and Avatar-enhanced multimodal E-CKMS (ACKMS). The three platforms were evaluated by three independent groups of twenty participants each (total=60) who carried out eight common tasks of increasing complexity and design based on three different styles. Another dependent group of forty-eight participants (n=48) was instructed to interact with the systems under similar usability conditions by performing six common tasks of two styles, and fill a questionnaire devised to measure the aspects of user acceptance. The results therein revealed that ACKMS was more usable and acceptable than both MCKMS and VCKMS, whereas MCKMS was more usable than VCKMS, but less acceptable. Inferential Statistics indicated that these results were statistically significant.

A CAD tool for current-mode multiple-valued CMOS circuitsLee, Hoon S. 12 1900 (has links)
Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited / The contribution of this thesis is the development of a CAD (computer aided
design) tool for current mode multiple-valued logic (MVL) CMOS circuits. It is
only the second known MVL CAD tool and the first CAD tool for MVL CMOS.
The tool accepts a specification of the function to be realized by the user,
produces a minimal or near-minimal realization (if such a realization is possible),
and produces a layout of a programmable logic array (PLA) integrated circuit that
realizes the given function. The layout is in MAGIC format, suitable for submission
to a chip manufacturer. The CAD tool also allows the user to simulate the realized
function so that he/she can verify correctness of design.
The CAD tool is designed also to be an analysis tool for heuristic minimization
algorithms. As part of this thesis, a random function generator and statistics gathering
package were developed. In the present tool, two heuristics are provided and
the user can choose one or both. In the latter case, the better realization is output
to the user. The CAD tool is designed to be flexible, so that future improvements
can be made in the heuristic algorithms, as well as the layout generator. Thus,
the tool can be used to accommodate new technologies, for example, a voltage mode
CMOS PLA rather than the current mode CMOS currently implemented. / http://archive.org/details/cadtoolforcurren00leeh / Lieutenant, Republic of Korea Navy

Understanding the Expressive Cartoon Drawings of a Student with Autism Spectrum DisorderCollins, Michael S 01 January 2017 (has links)
This study focuses on the highly expressive comic drawings of Amy, a child with autism. This study connects larger fields of research: the study of how people with autism spectrum disorder [ASD] process faces and emotions; and, research about artists with ASD. Amy's understanding of emotion was analyzed by asking her to view and identify humans and cartoon characters expressing different emotions. Her ability to illustrate emotion is tested by asking her to respond to various drawing prompts. The study concluded that Amy has difficulty identifying the emotions of humans and cartoons, but she does have the ability to illustrate characters that express a range of emotions. This individual case study shows that students with autism were able to process visual expressions of emotion with a high degree of accuracy. The results provide art educators a model with which to investigate how their students with autism process emotional expression.

Adolescents avec Troubles Envahissants du Développement Sans Déficience Intellectuelle : quels liens entre les troubles anxieux et la reconnaissance des expressions faciales émotionnelles ? / Adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) without Intellectual Disabilities : what links between anxiety disorders and facial emotional expression recognition?Soussana, Myriam 19 December 2012 (has links)
Previous studies reported a high prevalence of anxiety in adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) without intellectual disability. Hypothesis: There is an association between anxiety disorders and facial emotional expressionrecognition in this population. Objectives: 1) to explore the relationship between anxiety disorders and facial emotional expression recognition in adolescents with ASD without intellectual disability and in a control group of adolescents without ASD. 2) to examine the specificity of this relation to ASD in comparing their performance in facial emotion recognition to that of a control group with anxiety disorder without ASD. 3) to characterize anxiety disorders in ASD without intellectual disability. Methods: Our study is cross-sectional, descriptive and comparative. Forty-six adolescents with ASD without intellectual disability aged between 11 and 18 years participated in the study. Among them, 20 had an anxiety disorder and were compared with 20 controls of the same age, with anxiety disorder without ASD. Results: In adolescents with ASD, anxiety disorders were related to impairments in recognition of the emotions like Anger and Sadness. Moreover, we found a significant correlation between the level ofsocial anxiety and improvement in Fear recognition that was specific to ASD.Conclusion and future directions: This study supports the hypothesis that anxiety disorders are relatedto facial emotion recognition in adolescents with ASD without intellectual disability. Clinicalimplications concerning the assessment of anxiety comorbidities in this population and the lack ofadapted treatments are discussed.

Optimization and Refinement of XML Schema Inference Approaches / Optimization and Refinement of XML Schema Inference ApproachesKlempa, Michal January 2011 (has links)
Although XML is a widely used technology, the majority of real-world XML documents does not conform to any particular schema. To fill the gap, the research area of automatic schema inference from XML documents has emerged. This work refines and extends recent approaches to the automatic schema inference mainly by exploiting an obsolete schema in the inference process, designing new MDL measures and heuristic excluding of excentric data inputs. The work delivers a ready-to-use and easy-to-extend implementation integrated into the jInfer framework (developed as a software project). Experimental results are a part of the work.
