A non-governmental organization’s communication for social change: a qualitative case study of Kvinna till Kvinna

Bergh Brorsson, Elsa January 2022 (has links)
This study investigates how the non-governmental women’s rights organization Kvinna till Kvinna structures their external communication to raise public awareness in Sweden of issues important for social change; and in what way strategic communication is used in this process in order to cope with contemporary challenges. A qualitative research approach is applied to create an in-depth understanding of this. Two methods, qualitative content analysis of online gathered material and semi-structured interview, are used to grasp the organization’s work with the external communication. The strategic participatory approach to communication for development and social change functions as the theoretical framework. The results identify the organization’s approach to social change, strategic thinking in the set of goals, communication tactics, communication strategies and use of strategic junctures. Kvinna till Kvinna communicates on the basis of a structured and strategic plan which decides what, when and how to communicate. By repeatedly sharing great amounts of information about women’s rights, development work and development challenges, the communication is characterized by persuasion as well as educational connections. The persuasive character is strengthened through the use of storytelling and celebrities that convey the information. Kvinna till Kvinna to some extent work according to the strategic participatory approach which indicates that the awareness of the public could be increased. It is however primarily strategic rather than participatory elements, that permeate the organization’s communication, which also function as a way to handle contemporary challenges. A strategic communication which takes the external environment into account is concluded to be a tool for counteracting threats by political developments. The study highlights that strategic elements are central for a non-governmental organization in its strive for promoting and achieving social change, but participatory elements can also be understood as valuable in this process. The case of KtK enabled a discussion about the applicability of the theoretical framework and through this, possible developments and additions to the framework were highlighted.

Att "gilla" ett museum : En komparativ fallstudie av tre museers externa kommunikation / To "like" a Museum : A Comparative Casestudy of Three Museums External Communication

Persson, Johnny January 2013 (has links)
The aim and purpose of this essay is to study if three museums are using Facebook strategically to promote two-way communication with their target audiences in their external communication. A qual-itative and comparative research method and has been used and communication managers from each of the three museums have been interviewed. These interviews have been transcribed and coded in order to reveal opinions and views on how that particular museum feels about social media and the use of these tools in their external communication. A number of Facebook statuses have also been collect-ed in order to discover how each of the museums is using social media in order to reach and engage their target groups. Should the results of this essay be summarized it would show that the museums are using the communication channel that they feel suits the needs of reaching a specific audience. These channels can be a variety of newspaper ads, television or radio commercials. This kind of one-way communication does not give the audience any chance of direct feedback or the possibility to voice opinion about the message that has been sent. The social media networking sites such as Facebook have filled this gap; this is also the main argument as to why these museums are using Facebook to reach promote two-way communications with their target audiences. Because of this Facebook has earned a central place in the practice of external communication for these museums. Those responsi-ble for the internal and external communication agree that the tools used to communicate with their audiences, whether it is social media or otherwise, no tool should be considered to be “better” than the other. The tools should instead be used to complement each other, and the need of the organization should dictate the choice of communication tool not the other way around.

Effectiveness of Vehicle External Communication Toward Improving Vulnerable Road User Safe Behaviors: Considerations for Legacy Vehicles to Automated Vehicles of the Future

Rossi-Alvarez, Alexandria Ida 25 January 2023 (has links)
Automated vehicles (AVs) will be integrated into our society at some point in the future, but when is still up for debate. An extensive amount of research is being completed to understand the communication methods between AVs and other road users sharing the environment to prepare for this future. Currently, researchers are working to understand how different forms of external communication on the AVs will impact vulnerable road user (VRU) interaction. However, within the last 10 years, VRU casualty rates have continued to rise for all classifications of VRUs. Unfortunately, there is no suggestion that pedestrian fatality rates will ever decrease without some intervention. This dissertation aims at understanding the impacts of eHMI across real-world, complex scenarios with AVs and how researchers can apply those future findings to improve VRUs' judgments to today. A series of studies evaluated the necessity and impact of eHMI on AV–VRU interaction, assessed how the visual components of eHMI influenced VRU crossing decisions, and how variations in a real-world environment (multiple vehicles and scenario complexity) impact crossing decision behavior. Two studies examined how eHMI will impact future interactions between AVs and VRUs. Specifically, to understand how to advance the design of these future devices to avoid unintended consequences that may result. Results from these studies found that the presence and condition of eHMI did not influence participants' willingness to cross. Participants primarily relied on the speed and distance of the vehicle to make their crossing decision. It was difficult for participants to focus on the eHMI when multiple vehicles competed for their attention. Participants typically prioritized their focus on the vehicle that was nearest and most detrimental to their crossing path. Additionally, the type of scenario caused participants to make more cautious crossing decisions. However, it did not influence their willingness to cross. The last study applied the learnings from the first two studies to a foundational perception study for current legacy vehicles. These results showed a significant increase in judgment accuracies with a display. Through analysis across overall conclusions from the 3 studies, five critical findings were identified when addressing eHMI and 3 design recommendations, which are discussed in the penultimate section of this work. The results of this dissertation indicate that eHMI improved VRUs' accuracy of perception of change in vehicle speed. eHMI did not significantly impact VRUs crossing decisions. However, the complexity of the traffic scenarios affected the level of caution participants exhibited in their crossing behavior. / Doctor of Philosophy / An extensive amount of research is being completed to understand the communication methods between AVs and other road users sharing the environment to prepare for this future. Den professionella kommunikatören : En undersökning av svenska kommunikations-ansvarigas syn på sitt arbete jämfört med de formuleringar som anges i Stockholm Accords / The Professional Communicator : A study of Swedish Communication Management Professionals’ view of their profession

Törnström, EvaMarie, Adetun, Claudia January 2010 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to investigate the Swedish Public Relations and Communication profession from the Stockholm Accords point of view. The Stockholm Accords are an attempt to reflect Public Relations and Communication Management practice as it stands today and to provide a global common ground for the practitioners. The method used for this study is a quantitative research method conducted by a web survey answered by more than 400 Swedish communication managers. The questions posed were examining these managers view of their profession compared to the Stockholm Accords. The research shows that the Swedish way of implementing communication in the organization broadly corresponds to the Stockholm Accords when it comes to internal and external communication. However, there are some areas where Swedish communication practice diverges from Stockholm Accords. The issues which link governance, management and sustainability to communication have a much wider distribution of responses. A noticeable trend is that people who work in private organizations consistently responds with higher rankings than those who work in public organizations.

Är det möjligt att förbereda sig inför en oförutsägbar kris? : En kvalitativ studie om Coronakrisens påverkan på krishanteringen inom restauranger och nattklubbar

Haussner, Magdalena, Larsen, Sebastian January 2022 (has links)
The year 2019 marked the beginning of the pandemic which came to have devastating effects on Swedish restaurants and nightclubs following restrictions implemented within the country. This essay has examined how crisis management within these businesses in Uppsala has been affected as a result of Covid-19. Empirical data were collected through qualitative interviews with six leaders within the studied industries. Results indicated that the organizations have become more risk averse and put greater focus on cost minimizations, a change in communication with external parties, and that innovative approaches to the corona crisis resulted in significant organizational changes. An additional discovery indicated a change in leadership style which prioritized relationships. The leaders’ motives were also shown to influence the design and direction of the crisis management, and rooted in identity formation as well as ethical philosophy. The organizations have thus gained insights following Covid-19 which will affect their future crisis management.
