An ALMA Dynamical Mass Estimate of the Proposed Planetary-mass Companion FW Tau C

Dynamical mass estimates down to the planet-mass regime can help to understand planet formation. We present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) 1.3 mm observations of FW Tau C, a proposed similar to 10M(Jup) planet-mass companion at similar to 330 au from the host binary FW Tau AB. We spatially and spectrally resolve the accretion disk of FWTau C in (CO)-C-12 (2-1). By modeling the Keplerian rotation of gas, we derive a dynamical mass of similar to 0.1 M-circle dot. Therefore, FW Tau C is unlikely a planet, but rather a low-mass star with a highly inclined disk. This also suggests that FW Tau is a triple system consisting of three similar to 0.1. M-circle dot stars.

In an accelerating Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) environment, academic libraries’ catalogs have always been part of students’ and faculty members journey of resources discovery. The master thesis intents to focus its interest in Information Systems (IS) ground related to the implementation of a new search engine at the University of Piraeus Library. The Library wants to change the search features of its traditional online services and to implement a new discover tool with Web 2.0 characteristics. The aim of this master thesis is to investigate users’ views and desires interest according to their scholarly needs and expectations about VuFind in order to facilitate the Library to customize the integration. Therefore, critical systems theory will be employed for “therapeutic” reasons to enlighten the Library’s users about their current situation. Qualitative analysis is expected to recognize discrimination against traditional Library’s search engines. Qualitative data of the user impression and reaction when operate with the VuFind interface will lead to recommendations for enhancement and improvements. Findings will assist implementers to modify the discovery layer by meeting users’ needs of the academia community. The research will collect data through qualitative method on how participants operate with the VuFind search engine merging librarians’ professional views and users’ expectations and propositions. Participatory Design (PD) will be built upon Future Workshop method.

FW-CADIS variance reduction in MAVRIC shielding analysis of the VHTR

In the following work, the MAVRIC sequence of the Scale6.1 code package was tested for its efficacy in calculating a wide range of shielding parameters with respect to HTGRs. One of the NGNP designs that has gained large support internationally is the VHTR. The development of the Scale6.1 code package at ORNL has been primarily directed towards supporting the current United States' reactor fleet of LWR technology. Since plans have been made to build a prototype VHTR, it is important to verify that the MAVRIC sequence can adequately meet the simulation needs of a different reactor technology. This was accomplished by creating a detailed model of the VHTR power plant; identifying important, relevant radiation indicators; and implementing methods using MAVRIC to simulate those indicators in the VHTR model. The graphite moderator used in the design shapes a different flux spectrum than water-moderated reactors. The different flux spectrum could lead to new considerations when quantifying shielding characteristics and possibly a different gamma-ray spectrum escaping the core and surrounding components. One key portion of this study was obtaining personnel dose rates in accessible areas within the power plant from both neutron and gamma sources. Additionally, building from professional and regulatory standards a surveillance capsule monitoring program was designed to mimic those used in the nuclear industry. The high temperatures were designed to supply heat for industrial purposes and not just for power production. Since tritium, a heavier radioactive isotope of hydrogen, is produced in the reactor it is important to know the distribution of tritium production and the subsequent diffusion from the core to secondary systems to prevent contamination outside of the nuclear island. Accurately modeling indicators using MAVRIC is the main goal. However, it is almost equally as important for simulations to be carried out in a timely manner. MAVRIC uses the discrete ordinates method to solve the fixed-source transport equation for both neutron and gamma rays on a crude geometric representation of the detailed model. This deterministic forward solution is used to solve an adjoint equation with the adjoint source specified by the user. The adjoint solution is then used to create an importance map that can weight particles in a stochastic Monte Carlo simulation. The goal of using this hybrid methodology is to provide complete accuracy with high precision while decreasing overall simulation times by orders of magnitude. The MAVRIC sequence provides a platform to quickly alter inputs so that vastly different shielding studies can be simulated using one model with minimal effort by the user. Each separate shielding study required unique strategies while looking at different regions in the VHTR plant. MAVRIC proved to be effective for each case.

In a fusion plasma, the ions have to be heated to reach fusion relevant temperatures. One possibility is to launch an electromagnetic wave in the radio frequency band into the plasma. This wave can resonate with the ions at their cyclotron frequency and hence, the method is called ion cyclotron resonance heating. If the Larmor radius is of similar length scales as the wavelength, finite Larmor radius (FLR) effects are important. This introduces additional possible wave modes. To accurately predict the heating, simulations of these additional modes can be important. In order to describe the FLR effects in simulations, this work applies a Taylor expansion to second order in the perpendicular wavenumber of the dielectric tensor. In real space, the Taylor expansion corresponds to a series of spatial derivatives. These derivatives are implemented as weak-form contributions for a onedimensional finite element method (FEM)simulation. The approach is realized in a fork of the FEMIC code, coupling plasma physics in MATLAB with the FEM solver in COMSOL. The discretization of the FEM solver is adapted using a Helmholtz filter to provide the required degree of smoothness. Our approach proves successful to simulate FLR effects within the limitations caused by the modeling choices. We compare results with an all-order FLR method, showing good qualitative agreement. This work serves as a proof of concept to describe challenges on the way towards incorporation of second order FLR effects in twodimensional simulations in FEMIC. / I ett fusionsplasma måste jonerna värmas för att plasmat ska nå temperaturer relevanta för fusion. I denna masteruppsats Taylorutvecklar vi den dielektriska tensorn till andra ordningen i det vinkelräta vågtalet för att beskriva hur FLR-effekter påverkar simuleringarna. I det reella rummet motsvarar Taylorutvecklingen en serie av rumsliga derivator. Dessa derivator implementeras sedan som bidrag på svag form i en endimensionell modell som löses med den finita elementmetoden (FEM). Metoden implementeras i FEMIC-koden, som kopplar plasmafysik i MATLAB med FEM-lösaren i COMSOL. Diskretiseringen av FEM anpassas med ett Helmholtzfilter för att få en tillräckligt slät funktion. Ansatsen visar sig kunna framgångrikt simulera FLR-effekter, med vissa förväntade begränsningar. Lösningen jämförs sedan med lösningen från en metod som tar hänsyn till FLR-effekter, men som inte är baserad på en serieuteckling. Vi finner god kvalitativ överensstämmelse. Detta arbete fungerar som en prototyp och ämnar att beskriva de utmaningar som kan uppstå vid implementation av FLR-effekter den tvådimensionella axisymmetriska versionen av FEMIC.
