Do ofício manual à cooperação: os ganhos competitivos de artesãos em iniciativas de comércio justo / From hand crafted work to cooperation: the competitive gains of craft workers in fairtrade iniciativesBarros, Filippe Delarissa 25 September 2015 (has links)
The present work starts from two theoretical propositions to reach the following research problem: how do competitive gains from cooperation networks may be provided to craftsworkers in a Fairtrade initiative? From this research problem, the aim of this work is to empirically comprehend which competitive gains presented by the literature are provided to the crafts workers that participate in a Fairtrade initiative and how the different actors of this initiative perceive these competitive gains. To accomplish the main goal, the following specific objectives were determined: identify a craftwork Fairtrade initiative and analyze it as a cooperation network; map the actors that compose this Fairtrade initiative; identify the competitive gains of the crafts workers from the Fairtrade initiative vision; identify the competitive gains perceived by crafts workers that integrate the Fairtrade initiative; complement the analysis with the vision from part of the other actors of the network about the identified competitive gains; and compare the findings with the Fairtrade principles and characteristics. As a research methodology, an exploratory study was conducted, with a strategy of unique and integrated case study with a qualitative approach. The case studied was Rede Astas\'s, and the sources of evidence used were 8 interviews with a semi structured script, Rede Asta\'s documents and informal direct observing, while the treatment and analysis of the data were made through content analysis, resulting in 20 analytical categories and 7 final categories, after gathering the referred analytical categories. As first results, it was possible to justify the choice of the case, analyzing it also as a cooperation network. Still, the main actors from this network were mapped, being them the suppliers, the productive groups, Rede Asta, the counselors, the final consumers, the companies and the partner organizations. When analyzing the competitive gain of scale and market power, the main findings were related to the access to consumer markets and sales growth, relationship with suppliers and credibility and legitimacy. On the gain of solutions access, the main findings were about trainings for pricing, prospection of companies, communication and cultural valorization and the access to differentiated credit. On learning and innovation, the main findings were exchange of market, trends, products and techniques informations, and development of new products. As for the gain on cost and risks reductions, the findings were about payment safety, advances and investments, and about activities sharing and technical complementation. Finally, in the gain on social relations it was identified as main findings the transparency and trust, and the internal competition and opportunists behaviors. All these findings were compared also to the Fairtrade principles and characteristics. It is possible to affirm, then, that this research tested the limits of applying the model of competitive gains within cooperation networks to Fairtrade, expanding the theoretical perspectives of the subject. For future studies are recommended to be done re-applications of this research in multiple cases of craft work and other products from Fairtrade, as well as new descriptive researches with crafts workers, other producers and other actors from Fairtrade. Still, a recommendation for future researches is to deepen the study of relationships between the variables from Fairtrade and from competitive gains in cooperation networks, or even of the relationship between the variables of different competitive gains within each other.

The Fairtrade system is an alternative market based on fairer trade relations, aiming at greater equity in the international market, through sustainable development of marginalized producers and workers, especially, from the southern hemisphere. The constitution of certified commodity markets do not occur in an instinctive form, but through negotiation among involved actors. As these markets are adjusted, new governance structures emerge and are re-structured to adapt to new instituted demands and dynamics (LEME et al. 2013). In Brazil, Fairtrade certification is employed in diverse products, however the most prominent commodities are coffee, orange juice and fresh fruits. Some academic studies have been developed to better understand the Fairtrade certification in the coffee and orange juice sectors, however there is a lack of this type of study in fresh fruits in the national level. To address this lacuna, this research analyzes the Brazilian Fairtrade certified fresh fruit network. To carry out this study, the Transaction Cost Theory was utilized to identify and analyze the existing contracts in the Fairtrade certified networks and to demonstrate the activities of Fairtrade International in Brazil. This research analyzed secondary data and interviews with representatives from 13 producer organizations, Fairtrade International, traders and key actors of the network. The research findings identified that Fairtrade International is the fresh fruit network strategic center, responsible for the coordination of the entire network. It also identified three types of contracts involving producer organizations (POs), linking the POs to the Fairtrade network, trades and their importers. The relations that emerged from the network contractual transitions are trilateral dependency and the contracts are the neoclassical type. It is important to note that Fairtrade focuses on long-lasting relations between producers and importers, thus it is expected that the contracts evolve from neoclassical to relational, however this research evinced that the frequency of contracts identified in this study are discrete. It also became clear that Fairtrade International, with their actions, is prioritizing the producer criteria conformity in detriment of the strengthening of relational contracts in the network.

Sustainable Fashion Consumption and Consumer BehaviorZahid Iqba, Muhammad January 2011 (has links)
Thesis was carried out to make an estimation of the willingness of consumers to buy the clothes produced under eco-friendly and decent way. Neoclassic demand theory was used and basic idea was to know that either moral effects on a consumer’s individual decision while choosing the products manufactured under friendly environment or not; if yes, then how and how much. Survey method along with choice experiment analysis was used to collect the data. Selected area was Boras Sweden and 50 respondents were considered for the survey. To estimate the degree of willingness of a consumer to pay for a Swan labeled and/or Fairtrade labeled jeans, choice experiments was used. Afterwards, the collected data was used within econometric models. It has been observed from results that consumers were more willing to pay for a Swan labeled and/or Fairtrade labeled jeans than non-labeled jeans. The responsible individuals regarding environment were much more willing to pay for Fairtrade and/or Swan labeled clothes, considering the factor that production does not affect the environment in negative way and it was done under socially acceptable conditions. / Program: Magisterutbildning i Fashion Management

A Fair Chance to Know It’s Fair : A study of online communication within the field of Fair Trade consumptionBlomberg, Sara, Busck, Maria January 2013 (has links)
The rise of ethical consumerism has contributed to that organisations increasingly include CSR policies in their business and marketing strategies. Consumers want to make more ethically based purchasing decisions, and are guided by organisations’ ethical claims and by product labels. However, there are many different ethical organisations and labels on the market today and consumers find it difficult to separate them and know what each of them stands for. Ethical consumerism stems from green consumerism and has contributed to the development and rise of the Fair Trade movement. The general idea of Fair Trade is to support producers in poor countries, and by purchasing Fair Trade products consumers can contribute to realising the Fair Trade objectives. Previous research has identified a gap between consumers’ attitudes and actual behaviour regarding Fair Trade consumption. Consumers clearly express a positive attitude towards the Fair Trade movement and Fair Trade products, but their attitudes are not reflected in actual purchases. Researchers suggest that the gap could depend on lack of information and proof that Fair Trade actually contribute to better working and living conditions of producers in poor countries, but this had not yet been investigated. Our main purpose with this degree project is to identify factors that could affect the attitude-behaviour gap, and more precisely how access to information affects the existing gap. Our conclusions and recommendations are providing valuable insights for Fair Trade and other ethical organisations and businesses that are part of ethical value chains. We therefore formulated the following research question: In what ways can Fair Trade certification organisations and retailers diminish consumers’ attitude-behaviour gap in Fair Trade consumption? In order to answer our research question, we formulated the following four sub-purposes; to investigate the dialogue between Fairtrade and consumers; to investigate how Fairtrade and retailers communicate and share information with each other; investigate retailers’ expected and perceived responsibility as part of the Fairtrade value chain; identify what factors consumers believe are important regarding Fairtrade and their Fairtrade consumption. Our study is delimited to Sweden and is based on content analysis of communication between Fairtrade Sweden, consumers and retailers, on Fairtrade Sweden's Facebook page. The study has both qualitative and quantitative characteristics, although focus is on qualitative data analysis. We collected a total number of 1671 posts and comments, where 357 were published by Fairtrade, 1215 by consumers and 99 by retailers and other businesses. All data were collected and categorised manually and copied into an excel sheet where each post and comment were coded. The analysis and discussion of our empirical findings are further based on theory within the fields of Fair Trade consumption, ethical and political consumerism, online communication, retail marketing and branding. The main findings from this research are that consumers view retailers as an important actor in the Fair Trade value chain. Consumers put high value in communication and cooperation between Fair Trade and retailers, but these two actors have not realised the advantages and opportunities of it. We have also observed that consumers seek to maximise utility and that the existing attitude-behaviour gap thereby is influenced by several factors. Branding and labelling within Fair Trade consumption are important for consumers' purchasing decisions. Although, we have observed that product brands that have the Fairtrade mark are perceived as more important than the Fairtrade brand itself. Consumers are loyal to brands and do not show a willingness to switch brands to buy a Fairtrade marked product. Moreover, Fair Trade consumption is influenced by other ethical and environmental concerns. Consumers want Fair Trade organisations to be ethical and also environmentally friendly at all stages and throughout the entire value chain.

Värderingar och villighet att betala extra : En kvantitativ studie gällande miljömärkning och social produktmärkning av mobiltelefoner / Personal values and willingness to pay more : A quantitative study regarding eco-labelled and fairtrade mobile phonesGavelin, Sara, Sjöström, Anna January 2014 (has links)
Studien var kvantitativ och använde sig bland annat av Schwartz Portrait Values som mätinstrument / Personal values are an important part of psychology and concerns what people consider to be of importance in their lives. Recent studies have focused on the effect personal values have on people’s willingness to pay when it comes to fair trade and eco-labelled food. The purpose of this study was to examine personal values linked to willingness to pay when it comes to a fairtrade or eco-labelled mobile phone, regarding people who live in three closely situated towns in western Sweden. The participants in this study were 79 men and women in the ages 18 – 64. This was a quantitative study and one of the instruments used were Schwartz Portrait Values. The results show that people who found the values benevolence and univeralism to be most important where those who were willing to pay more for these kind of mobile phones. The result is consistent with earlier studies
