A feasibility study to test the potential efficacy of a rowing-related yoga program on male varsity competitive rowers

Kit, Alanna Katharine 07 May 2020 (has links)
The purpose of this present study was to assess the feasibility and determine the potential short-term efficacy of implementing a specific 9-week “Yoga for Rowers” (ROWGA) program on male varsity rowers during a competitive training season. Sixteen competitive male varsity rowers (20.6 ± 2.1 years) were recruited to participate, using a single group, pre-test-post-test, quasi-experimental research design. All participants performed two 60 min ROWGA sessions per week for 9 weeks during their fall competitive season. The primary objectives were to test the efficacy of a ROWGA program in a real-world context by evaluating: 1) the feasibility of implementing the program during the training and competitive season as measured by program adherence; 2) its potential effect on strength by evaluating hip muscle strength acting in the sagittal, frontal, and transverse planes as well as on hip muscle strength ratios between the agonist versus antagonist muscle groups; and 3) its potential effect on hip flexion range of motion (ROM). Two pre-test baseline measurements were performed on all participants over 1- week prior to initiating the ROWGA sessions while a single post-test was conducted following the ROWGA intervention. Intraclass correlation coefficients for ROM and strength were used to determine reliability of measurements by taking the two pre-intervention test scores. Outcome measures included hip flexion range of motion, peak isometric hip muscle forces normalized to body weight, including hip flexors, extensors, abductors, adductors, both internal and external rotators as well as peak isometric agonist-antagonist hip muscle strength ratios. Pre and post peak isometric hip strength measurements were calculated for agonist-antagonist muscle groups within each plane by dividing flexors by extensors, adductors by abductors, and internal by external rotators. Feasibility of the ROWGA program was determined from program attendance and adherence rates. The adherence rate was considered high with 89% attending all sessions, after adjusting for compulsory competitions. Significant improvements in peak isometric strength were demonstrated for hip flexors, extensors, abductors, and adductors, and external rotators, while a significant reduction for hip flexion ROM was observed. No significant changes in isometric hip muscle strength agonist-antagonist ratios were demonstrated. The results from this research support the feasibility of the ROWGA program in terms of rower’s acceptance, adherence, and the ability to accommodate the time requirements within their schedule as well as potential strength benefits gained. This research could help provide a platform for future large-scale research related to injury prevention in rowing. / Graduate / 2021-04-06

Feasibility Study of Solar-Wind Hybrid Power System for Rural Electrification at the Estatuene Locality in Mozambique

Silinto, Berino Francisco, Bila, Nelso Alberto January 2015 (has links)
This project work focuses on the feasibility study of a hybrid PV-Wind System for rural electrification at the Estatuene Locality in southern Mozambique. This is in line with electricity network expansion, which, in Mozambique shows high implementation cost and low operation cost. Through field research, an analysis was made of the actual electrical demand in the Estatuene rural community. The wind data was collected from the installed weather stations in the region while the solar data were extracted internally from the HOMER software by introducing the site coordinates. All the configurations, simulations and selection of hybrid systems were also made using HOMER. For the Estatuene rural community it was estimated a scaled annual average demand of 9.4 kWh/day with a peak load of 1.4 kW for DC charge; and a total scaled annual average of 133 kWh/day with a peak load of 15.3 kW for AC Charge. The annual mean solar potential is 5.205 kWh/m2/d, and the mean wind speed is 4.84 m/s for 12 meters above the ground. Thus the calculations and the selection of the best configuration of the hybrid system were crossed out with the technical specifications and costs of photovoltaic panels, wind turbines, power converter, batteries, and the electricity network, specifically for the comparison between an optimum hybrid system solution and two separate ones. The calculations presented an analysis of the technical and the financial viability of the selected hybrid system for local electric power production.

Undersökning av affärssystem lämpliga för mindre företag / Study of ERP Systems Suitable for a Smaller Company

Karkane, Karkane, Sedki, Waad January 2012 (has links)
In today's businesses, with multiple associated business processes that extend various areas of work, there is a need for efficient IT support that is tailored to the individual business. ERP systems are such IT supports which are used to support, facilitate, plan and follow up a business. With several different functions that cover most of business processes, prospects are to optimize these and automate the administrative processes to ultimately be able to put more focus on the core business. The study aims to investigate suitable ERP systems for small business and also investigate approaches available to select and acquire an ERP system. In behalf of Stockwine Group Ltd. we have had the opportunity to explore the subject in a real case. An insight that has been arisen during the study is that there are few widely recognized methods for the selection and acquisition of business software, instead suppliers and consultancies uses methods of their own. We have mainly used parts from the method Välja och Förvalta Standardsystem (VFS-method) as an approach to our work. Besides the examination of suitable ERP systems, the subject has brought other important elements that have become a central part of our work, including a feasibility study that includes mapping of Stockwine Group's business, a needs’ analysis and a requirements specification. Another important part has been the interviews and meetings with vendors and consulting firms, whose information has been used as the basis of our evaluation of the selected ERP systems. The evaluation has led to a recommendation of four selected ERP systems that we believe would enable the effectiveness of Stockwine Group's business processes.

The Potential for Urban Anaerobic Digestion in Quelimane : A model and feasibility assessment of a small scale system implementation Minor Field Study

Rudén, Sophie, Stendahl, Matilda January 2016 (has links)
The Municipality of Quelimane, the fourth biggest city in Mozambique, aims to apply an EcoCity concept in the city. Therefore, the municipality initiated a waste-to-energy project in order to improve the lacking waste management, valorize resources and lessen the burden on the environment. The purpose of the current project was to investigate the potential for implementing a waste-to-energy system in Quelimane. In particular, the technology of anaerobic digestion. This technology had been identified as the best alternative based on local conditions according to a study performed by students at KTH, the municipality of Quelimane and GreenLight about waste-to-energy in Quelimane the spring of 2015. The present project was performed during eight weeks in Mozambique; five weeks in the capital Maputo and three weeks on-site in Quelimane, where the collection of data mainly was made in Quelimane. The gathered information resulted in a model for a small scale anaerobic digestion system in Quelimane. An assessment of the potential for an implementation of an anaerobic digestion system in Quelimane was determined using a feasibility assessment tool. The study was performed using the following methods: literature study, interviews, surveys, on-site observations, modelling and by using a feasibility assessment tool. The analysis performed with the feasibility tool identified the socio-cultural attitude towards the technology and the willingness among the residents to use the end products as key factors for a successful implementation. The attitude towards the technology was determined as mainly positive and the willingness to use the end product high. The strong involvement and initiative from the municipality were also identified as key factors and determined as positive. The environmental, policy and legal and the technological aspects of the system are other identified key factors were mainly identified as positive according to the feasibility assessment tool. However, there is currently no end user for the small scale plant and no established funding for the project. This altogether results in a current marginally high potential for the implementation of a small scale anaerobic digestion plant, with good chances to increase the potential in the future.

Integration of Hydrogen Production via Water Electrolysis at a CHP Plant : A feasibility study

Ottosson, Anton January 2021 (has links)
Hydrogen gas (H2), that is not produced from fossil oil or natural gas, is expected to become a cornerstone in the energy transition strategy in Europe. The recent years, technological and economic advances in the electrolyzer area, along with political and corporate support, have put H2 at the forefront of many countries’ climate change agenda. Consequently, green H2 is poised to play a large role in the coming energy transition to combat climate change. The possible advantages of integrating H2 production with a combined heat and power plant, or CHP, is investigated in this study. More precisely, the water electrolysis is carried out based on the purified flue gas condensate water and excess heat is recovered as district heating. A comparison of today’s three most common electrolyzer technologies was made, where Proton Exchange Membrane, or PEM, technology was chosen for this project, mainly for its high purity of H2 gas, robust construction, and the ability to run it as a fuel cell. Based on a mass and energy balance, a model including the integration of a PEM with a generic CHP plant was developed. The model was made modifiable, making it possible to change governing parameters, to be able to investigate different possible scenarios. Production flows, losses and other relevant data was calculated from the model. Operational data for the PEM electrolyzer were collected from several manufacturers where a mean value of the data was used as a base-case for the calculations. Based on literature and consulting experts, several assumptions were made, for example the selling price of H2 and the price for electricity. From the base-case were two cases made: a linear and non-linear case. The linear case uses the same input data each year for 20 years, while the non-linear case uses a changing input data each year for 20 years. Calculations were based on an electrolyzer size of 1,4 MW, where auxiliary equipment consumed additional 0,04 MW, resulting in a total energy consumption of 1,44 MW. An operational temperature of 80°C was assumed along with an operational pressure of 5 and 30 bar for the anode and cathode respectively. This resulted in an H2 production flow of 26 kg/h, a process water requirement of 0,2 m3/h, and a possible heat recovery amount of 0,34 MWh with a relevant temperature for the use in district heating. The study shows that the condensate-water at E.ON could provide for ~4000 hours of operation in the wintertime. To enable full operation all year around, a purchase of tap water would be necessary. The economical calculations resulted in an H2 production cost of 53 SEK/kg for the linear case and 58 SEK/kg for the non-linear case. The linear case showed a positive internal rate of return, or IRR, of 1,7%, while the non-linear case resulted in IRR < -25%. A sensitive analysis was made to examine governing parameters. The results of the sensitivity analysis showed that the largest driving variables, that significantly affect the IRR, are the price for electricity and the selling price for H2. The largest OPEX cost was found to be the price of electricity. The results showed that it is feasible to produce H2 at E.ON Örebro in a resource efficient way under certain circumstances, correlated to the electricity and H2 market. With a low electricity price and a selling price of ~50 SEK/kg for H2, good profitability is expected.  It is also clear that future work should focus the areas of O2 usage, infrastructure, and market investigation for a more definitive conclusion.
