Characterization of greywater heat exchangers and the potential of implementation for energy savings / Värmeväxlare för spillvatten – karakterisering och energibesparingsmöjligheter

Garcia, Jose Daniel January 2016 (has links)
Buildings account for up to 32% of the total energy use in different countries. Directives from the European Union have pointed out the importance of increasing energy efficiency in buildings. New regulation in countries like Sweden establishes that new buildings should fulfill regulations of Nearly Zero Energy Buildings (NZEB), opening an opportunity for new technologies to achieve these goals. Almost 80-90% of the energy in domestic hot water use is wasted from different applications with almost no use and with a lot of potential energy to be recovered. The present work studied the characteristics of greywater heat exchanger as a solution to recuperate heat from greywater to increase efficiency in buildings. This study explored the fluid mechanics involved in the vertical greywater heat exchangers, analyzing the falling film effect present in drain pipes and the effects of the secondary flow generated in the external helical coil. A heat transfer model from a theoretical approach was proposed and validated. In addition, this study explored the different variables influencing the economic feasibility of the technology and an economic analysis was performed. A theoretical comparison between a greywater heat exchanger application and a reference case without it was evaluated highlighting the importance of all the variables involved in the potential of implementation of the technology. The technology shows big potential in households with high water consumptions, especially with electric boilers.

This thesis deals with the problem concerning the foundation and operation of forest preschools in the Czech Republic. The first forest preschool in the Czech Republic was founded in 2007 and the number of forest preschool has increased to forty-functioning forest preschools. However the forest preschools do not meet the requirements of preschool services. In the Czech Republic is no legislative rules for the operation of forest preschools. Nevertheless the research from abroad confirmed the positive effect on mental and physical development of children at preschool age. Above that the northern countries, Denmark and Germany support the functioning of the forest preschools. The foundation and the operation of forest preschool in the Czech Republic is accompanied with a lot of unclear issues. Because of that, the feasibility study provide a material which will help to future funders to evaluate the feasibility, reasonableness of the project, provide the information which will influence the operation and the foundation of the forest preschool in their neighborhood. The main aim of the thesis is to assess an implementation aspects that can influence the establishment of forest preschool. The feasibility study is related to the specific forest preschool in the district of Strakonice. The thesis is...

Bastien Tardif, Camille 08 1900 (has links)
Premature birth interrupts the normal development of several organs, particularly the heart and lungs, causing structural and functional alterations of the systems in adulthood. Although the benefits of physical activity on general health and exercise capacity in healthy and at-risk populations are well known, no studies have yet evaluated whether the population of young adults born very preterm could also benefit from these effects. The objective of this master’s thesis is therefore to evaluate the feasibility and estimate the effect of a supervised 14-week exercise intervention on the cardiorespiratory and muscular health of young adults born very preterm compared to young adults born at term (controls). Data from this non- randomized pilot trial were collected before, during, and after the exercise intervention. The first study showed that the exercise intervention was safe, valuable, and appreciated by young adults born very preterm, but that recruitment in the program was difficult due to the high level of commitment. The same study also showed that young adults born very preterm increased their moderate-to-high intensity PA levels following the intervention. The second study estimated the response of women who completed a sufficient number of training sessions and revealed that women born very preterm improved their muscular endurance (push-ups and sit-ups) as well as their aerobic capacity. However, following the intervention, their lower limb strength and endurance as well as their minute ventilation during exercise remained lower than women born at term. Exercise intervention is therefore feasible and safe for individuals born very preterm and could lead to improvement of certain cardiorespiratory and muscular parameters in women born very preterm, demonstrating the potential of exercise as a non-pharmacological intervention to mitigates the effects of premature birth on health.

A Techno_Economic Feasibility Study of a Cryptocurrency Data Center Based on Renewable Energy : A feasibility Study of a Bitcoin Mining Farm Powered by Solar and Wind Energy.

Wali, Ali January 2023 (has links)
The increasing popularity and improvements in the blockchain technology that offers decentralized communication and transactions in the form of cryptocurrencies that have now days a market value of almost 1.3 Trillion dollars and a huge potential to contribute to other fields such as health care, financial transactions, information technology, secure data exchange, data storage and many others has been pushing towards more integrating of renewable energies in this field. The process of approving and inserting the information and contracts with Bitcoins on the blockchain is called mining of Bitcoin and accounts for a large electricity consumption which has been estimated to be around 120 Terawatt_hour (TWH) worldwide in 2023. To keep this field of technology improving and strengthen its development, leading it towards more usage of clean energy will benefit the field and most importantly will help our societies to face climate change and align with the United Nations sustainable goals regarding integrating and increasing the usage of renewable energies and sustainable methods in all fields of life and industry.  The purpose of this study is to assess the feasibility of building a mining farm for bitcoin powered by renewable energies, solar and wind, by using photovoltaics systems and wind turbines with the integration of storage mediums to utilize the clean energy as much as possible. The project is done by firstly conducting a literature review about the technologies used followed by choosing the most appropriate alternatives that fit best for the current project properties and goals. After choosing the components and methods to be used , the technical feasibility is analyzed by simulating the hybrid energy system using a code program written in the software MATLAB which optimizes and calculates on one hand the electricity production of the system that is used for the hourly reliability in meeting the load demand of the mining devices and on the other hand the total cost of the system which will be built upon to estimate the levelized cost of energy and hence analyze the economic feasibility of the project. After conducting the simulation and financial calculations, the results show that the project is technically feasible and the reliability can be as high as around 8650 hours of the year, however, to achieve a 100 percent reliability a support power should be used such as a diesel generator which has also been done in this work. The economic feasibility indicates that the project will be profitable based on the installed capacities and mined Bitcoins, however a storage medium and a support power production source are vital for the success of such a project.

Sustainable automated transportation systems directing towards smart cities : A feasibility study of droid delivery in Stockholm

Movaheddin, Armin January 2021 (has links)
The rapid growth of E-commerce around the world has prompted related stakeholders to place a greater emphasis on automation. Catastrophes like pandemics are boosting the public demand for quick and efficient transportation, among others. Automated vehicle technologies are associated with the last-mile delivery operations that lead to improving sustainability and Smart Cities. In this context, Autonomous Vehicles are being explored as a viable urban logistics solution. This empirical thesis conducts a feasibility study to investigate the feasibility of incorporating an Autonomous Vehicle into E-commerce operations in Stockholm, Sweden. A case study is analyzed by foodora AB, a German company that operates as a distributor of food and goods in the Swedish market. The study provides a framework that depicts the issues faced by Q- commerce, Operational Planning, and Stakeholders, respectively when introducing Autonomous Vehicles. The results of the study’s qualitative and quantitative approach show that Stockholm's infrastructure is in line with the sustainability plans and is considered ready for droid operations. According to the findings, the utilization rate that is defined as the number of orders delivered per hour can be as high as 2.4 resulting in a high degree of customer satisfaction. However, regulations, classifications, weather conditions, and internet connectivity continue to be major challenges. Autonomous Vehicles must be included in legislative consideration as a mode of transportation in the future to facilitate operations and safety measures.

Un modèle et son revers : la cogestion des réserves de biosphère de Waza et de la Bénoué dans le Nord-Cameroun / A model and its counter : comanagement of the Waza and Benue biosphere reserves in Northern Cameroon

Saleh, Adam 06 December 2012 (has links)
The co-management of protected areas can be approached through an innovativemodel making it possible to improve the conditions of the people surrounding theprotected areas as well as to assure the sustainable conservation of its biologicalresources. The research in this thesis tests this model in the actual situation of thetwo biosphere reserves in the North of Cameroon: the Waza and Benoué NationalParks. In order to be able to explain differences between expected and obtainedresults we have developed a methodology analysing bio-ecological data, filedmeasurements, questionnaires and interviews with the different stakeholdersinvolved as well as an examination of the different co-managed territories. Theresults show that because of the application of co-management, potential conflictsituations between the different stakeholders have been prevented. Also it hasstimulated a better understanding of the actors in charge of the two reserves, aboutthe interest in the reserves’ natural resources by the people living around them.Nevertheless, the results show also that the benefits from the co-managementsystem in terms of protection of biodiversity and survival of the people living at theborders have not been promising in terms of financial and material means investedand in terms of the hope local people had in it. The co-management situation hasprovoked violent conflicts, resentment and decay of the biological entities, subject ofthis co-management. This research shows how actors have multiple agendas, likeusing co-management for their personal gain, while also tormenting other actors whostand in their way. It also puts some light on State stakeholders and theirengagement in this process without having done a feasibility study and with theconstraint of having to hand over part of their power to representatives in the field. At the local level, the analysis of the existing relationships shows that the statestructures stay rigid without compromising and without taking into consideration thelocal communities. The latter, being stimulated by national and international NGOs,understanding that the full game is played, while hiding their illegal exploitations. The two parties unfold in the field of co-management with their identities of beingmaster and subject, oppressor and poacher. This game of swindling cannot beassociated with participative management. The stages within the development of thetheoretical concept of co-management which could have prevented this situation hasbeen perceived as superficial by the different stakeholders, bringing in to discreditthe medium and long term process results. In fact, the loss of one third of thewildlife numbers in the two reserves during the co-management phase as well as theinsignificant gain of 400 FCFA per inhabitant of the Benoué reserve do not stimulatethe continuation and ownership of the process. The way the co-management in theBenoue and Waza biospheres reserves has been implemented , has shown the limitsof the preconceived policy, applied in the field without taking into consideration theknowledge of local people and its particular context. Our study shows the importanceof preparing and reflecting on the exploitation and integration of local and outsideknowledge and competences before setting up the challenging system of sustainablenatural resources co-management.
