Addressing the self through the subjectivity of the other : a practice-led investigation of a particular artist-model relationship

Buttigieg, Lawrence January 2014 (has links)
As an artist working with the female model, this practice-led research examines concepts of alterity and subjectivity while challenging the dominant role of male subjectivity in the western world. It revolves around the relationship between myself and the female subject, a specific woman who within the context of my work epitomises but at the same time transcends womanhood. This undertaking suggests that my representations of her body grow out of a dialectical tension between the feeling that the female other has almost become a metonymic extension of myself, and the awareness that such a feeling is at the same time illusory. The practical component of my investigations takes the form of body-themed box assemblages which are reminiscent of polyptychs, tabernacles and reliquaries. However, the sacred images which form part of these ecclesiastical items are replaced with others showing close-ups of the fragmented bodies of the model and myself. While this kind of profane artefact acts as a receptacle for our bodies which are broken down and enshrined together with other objects, it constitutes part of an ongoing process whereby the relationship between myself and the female figure is metamorphosed, re-shaped, and re-visioned. The significance of these creations is meant to extend beyond their artefactual existence and become mediums through which I re-visit female sexuality and eroticism and assess them within a spiritual context, albeit in the circumscribed framework of a particular woman. The artefact s ultimate objective is to appease my innate desire to access the other via a self-reflexive process which involves both mirroring and distancing at one and the same time. This process also includes an exploration into the spiritual with the aim of exploiting that which is other in the western theological tradition, namely God and the Divine. The gaze is also deeply involved in this exploration of the other. In fact, while our bodies are subjected to a re-visitation and trans-valuation in parts through multiplication and fragmentation, the gaze is in the process broken down into a series of glances which originate from myself, the viewer or the female subject. This process questions and disrupts the dominance of the male gaze, and its associated precepts, in Western visual culture. Finally, by correlating the model s body with the divine, my artefacts seek to give this woman, as an embodiment of the true other, a trans-corporeal identity. Rather than seeking to exert control over the other, they provide a pious space wherein the self and the other are able to encounter each other in a manner that initiates an equitable relationship, unhindered by presumptive knowledge. This is aided by the aesthetics and dynamics underlying the box assemblage which, while expressing gender fluidity and encouraging disengagement from preconceived dogmas a sort of reverse cognition also enhances the experience of its deific symbolism.

Female Gender Representation in The Terminator Franchise

Beis, Triantafyllos January 2021 (has links)
The aim of this research is to investigate the representation of the female gender in theTerminator franchise and to examine whether there has been an evolution in thisrepresentation throughout the years. For this purpose, the representation of the lead femalecharacter, Sarah Connor, has been examined in the films The Terminator (Cameron, 1984),Terminator 2: Judgement Day (Cameron, 1991) and Terminator Genisys (Taylor, 2015), inwhich Sarah Connor is the only main female character. The thesis begins by providing athorough presentation of the situational, specific and the theoretical background of the threefilms analysed. Then, the methodology used in the research is described and linguistic, visualand contextual data are provided. These data are then analysed and discussed in relation tothe background of the films and to the objectives set at the beginning of the research. Inparticular, the linguistic aspect of gender representation is explored based on the waylanguage is used to represent women in the Terminator films. After a thorough analysis ofdata collected and discussed, the research concluded that there has, indeed, been an evolutionin female gender representation in the Terminator films, which reflects an evolution in theperception of gender by society itself.

Sexism and Women: The Implications of Female Gender Resentment

Regnier-Bachand, Christine 01 January 2015 (has links)
Do women suffer from a societal Stockholm Syndrome which leads them to display high levels of modern and traditional sexist behavior? Does a woman*s level of modern or traditional sexist behavior influence her political choices? Female gender resentment and sexist biases are an understudied area of the extant literature on sexism. Typically the focus is placed on men*s sexist attitudes and treatment of women, but is it possible that women also contribute to the subordination of their gender through sexist practices? These are questions which this thesis attempts to answer. The findings indicate that working women under the age of 39 are more likely to display modern sexist behavior and that female homemakers under the age of 39 display high levels of traditionally sexist behavior. These attitudes carry over into the political decision making processes and have a negative impact on whether a woman would be likely to support a female presidential candidate.

The research environment is the Pilgrimage of Bom Jesus da Lapa, which has been held for 323 years in that city, located in the western region of Bahia. The subjects in the research are pilgrim women who fall in an age group of between 50 and 70 years-old and have been participating in the Pilgrimage for more than five consecutive years; they are from five Brazilian states (Bahia, Minas Gerais, São Paulo, Espírito Santo and Goiás) that report a higher rate of participation in this religious event. We utilized as our research methodology the bibliographical, qualitative, fieldwork and documentary research, and the collection of data; our technique was participant observation and semi-structured interviews. This thesis has as its general objective to analyze how to articulate, within the area of popular Catholicism, and more particularly in the Pilgrimage of Bom Jesus da Lapa, sociocultural changes occurring in society, gender relations and the dynamics of Catholicism. Emphasis will be given to the impacts of such articulation on the conceptualization of gender relations, to the core of the pilgrimage itself and beyond, to the everyday relationships of the women concerned; to the form of the inclusion of women in this context, how the pilgrim women are situated (are positioned), in relation to socio-cultural changes in progress, how pilgrim women understand the space of the pilgrimage, in relation to their daily domestic life, to the challenges faced by these subjects, in the sense that, at times, they approach or move away from gender identity, derived from patriarchal society, where the submission of women to men is a key feature. Based on the results of the interviews of the pilgrim women and on the theoretical framework as references, we concluded that the Pilgrimage of Bom Jesus da Lapa is a space for the social reproduction of the family and of the female gender identity, where a contrast is observed in the reframing of the role of and in the profile of the pilgrim women of Bom Jesus da Lapa, alternating between permanence and transformation of the gender identity arising from patriarchy.

The academic scene alerts us to the information that as much the studies on youth as in studies of feminism, there is a large gap in relation to the female juvenile manifestations and further, that the references to them in scientific research takes as focus, in a restrictive manner, adolescence linked to the exercise of sexuality or pregnancy. Trying to deal with this invisibility, we concentrate on the quotidian and terms of life of young people living in a certain suburb, trying the understanding of what actually is being experienced by them, beyond the fact of the limitation of its circulation spaces and access to public equipments, in the direction of the contribution to the establishment of methodologies for intervention on social issues, in relation to this population group. In our professional action, mobilized us in the search for the reasons of the absence of these young people living in public spaces in the city of São Carlos (São Paulo), focusing in a Youth Center. Such mobilization resulted in this master degree research, dealing with an approach that includes the observation-action, depth interviews, in order to gather data to a mapping about who they are, what they think, what they do, what they like and how the young girls live in the suburbs urban. The work has evidenced that youth in question are, in their great majority, hampered in their personal statements. The cultural relations sexist, embodied in an important way in the dynamics of the illegal drug trade, in the men holders of the financial power, in the power of the influence and in the patriarchal system that remains in contemporary society have strongly shaped the future of these young people. Their dreams, desires, social participation and even their personality suffer with the assaults on female autonomy, remaining at some point in the late nineteenth century, before much of what we witnessed over the last century in relation to the rights of women. Our finding indicates that the investments in the social policies specific to this population has been insufficient and that their actions are fragmented and / or inadequate. We concluded that the needs are from several orders, the increased of the general and specific knowledge about this group until the public debate and the social positioning in relation to the guarantee of civil, social and human rights of young Brazilian girls, in order to expand their opportunities of participation and autonomy.

This Program is the result of a discursive formation that has been widespread in the world in order to create affirmative actions to include those who have been socially excluded for a long time in this particular case: women. Thus, the outlined research is directly linked to the female gender and the vocational education. To achieve this proposed aim, this study establishes as theoretical, methodological and analytical horizon, the Discourse Analysis based mainly on the precepts of Michel Foucault. The analysis is organized under a methodological perspective of the thematic path, in accordance with Guilhaumou and Maldidier (1994), and includes the following topics: a) the construction of truths about the identitary constitution of the female gender in PMM; b) power relations of institutional nature that focus on the identitary constitution of the female gender in PMM; c) the identitary constitution of female gender through some processes of subjectivation. The analysis of these themes takes as corpus some official documents of the PMM and the eponymous electronic portal. Results reveal that the historical oppression towards the female gender and the traditional Brazilian professional education that insists on offering courses aimed at those who are already marginalized continue to constitute the identity of the female gender in PMM. Besides, these results point to the fact that the discrimination and prejudice that reflect upon female gender might subjectify women who make part of the PMM to the point that they incorporate this discourse.

The setting is Brazil, politically disturbed and on the verge of a military coup which would depose President João Goulart (1919-1976) and establish a military regime that would rule until late 80 s. In this oppressive context we find Mônica, character of a cartoon series designed by Mauricio de Sousa starting in 1963. The little girl, who would gain international recognition, started as a secondary character in the comic strips featuring Cebolinha, another popular character by Sousa. In a few years Mônica would be taken to the top as Sousa a main character, which led to the gathering of a group of characters under the title of A Turma da Mônica (Mônica s Bunch). This research describes the beginning of Sousa a career and his characters with the purpose of getting acquainted with the first comic strips. Based on the British Cultural Studies, an intellectual movement dedicated to cultural analysis and discussion established after the Frankfurt School, we will demonstrate what is the involvement of selected midia with the context of creation, in order to demonstrate the relations of power between them. Mônica, the main character of this research is a girl who always overcomes conflicts by means of physical power and by such an attitude has always been portraited as violent by critics and readers. In this study we will demonstrate how the character resists to successive attempts from the other characters to convince her to be more feminine . The characteristics attributed to such a gender are fundamental to the discussion that aims at analyzing the cultural construction of male and female roles in the Brazilian society in the 1960 s.
