Under import substitution industrialization (ISI) policy marked by state intervention in the economy, SOEs and national private companies became protected from foreign competition and enjoyed great market power. However, economic shocks during the 1970s and 1980s, along with the growing inefficiency of these enterprises due to agency problems, led to losses. During the 1990s, Latin-American countries opened their economy and undertook privatization programs. However, since strong national companies may be useful for the State because they control strategic resources, and in order to maintain national sovereignty by preventing the acquisition of SOEs by foreign investors, the Brazilian State kept a minority equity stake in these companies. In addition, the Brazilian State also invested in some companies to make them globally competitive ("national champions"), while also holding minority equity stakes to avoid their acquisition by foreigners. We argue that the government has not abandoned its previous policy of intervention in the economy, instead, it has adapted it to new circumstances. We evaluate the influence of state ownership on the companies’ degree of internationalization and performance. SOEs may perform worse than privately controlled firms because of agency problems, while government as a minority shareholder can assist firms by providing financial and political resources. Analyzing a panel of non-financial listed companies in Brazil between 2002 and 2016, we found that the higher the state ownership by means of pension funds and BNDES, the higher the degree of internationalization measured by the foreign sales to total sales ratio. The degree of internationalization was even higher when the government was the minority shareholder of family-controlled companies. Analyzing the impact of state ownership on firm-level financial performance, we found that firms in which the government was one of the shareholders did not underperform in comparison to privately controlled firms before the Brazilian crisis of 2014- 2016 crisis. However, during the crisis, when government support decreased, we verified that the relation between majority state ownership and financial performance measured by the return on assets (ROA) and Tobin’s Q was negative. Although negative, there was no statistically significant effect of minority state ownership. Our study suggests the need for governmentinvested enterprises to develop skills to perform well when they cannot rely on government assistance. Furthermore, the degree of internationalization did not soften the effects of the crisis on the firm-level financial performance, which may indicate that the domestic institutional environment has a strong influence on the performance of Brazilian companies.

Among the aspects worked on the issue of voluntary disclosure is the reduction of informational asymmetry. From this perspective, considering the importance of maximizing transparency, arising from the practice of voluntary disclosure, sought to perform analyzes with eight logit regression models, based on Brazilians non-financial companies listed on the Brazil Bolsa Balcão S.A., in 2016. The research differential was to distinguish the respective dependent variables with the aid of a quality metric for the comparison amongst published information of the companies in question. We have Murcia’s study (2009) as a reference to establish which variables, in principle, more explain the willingness of companies to publish voluntarily information. Therefore, we tried to answer the following research question: "What is the probability of the explanatory variables selected influence the practices of voluntary disclosure in Brazilian non-financial companies listed on the Brazil Bolsa Balcão S.A, in 2016?”. Thereby, we have carried out the analysis of the data in two stages. The first one consisted of an in-depth survey on the content of the publications carried out by the sample companies, aiming to qualify, comparatively, the information evidenced by the companies, under the parameter of a metric constructed contemplating the quality of the information. This first stage of the analysis was performed in addition to identifying the level of voluntary disclosure of companies, by segment of activity and economic sector for the construction of dependent variables. Therefore, in the second stage of the data analysis, we worked with the logit regression models proposed in the research, with the objective of estimating the probability of practicing the voluntary disclosure of financial information. As the main results, when verified the data presented by the estimated regression models, it was found that the coefficients associated with corporate governance and audit have a positive influence expressive on a probability of disclosure of information, so coefficients of the first variable were statistically significant in the integral of the estimated models. In addition, regarding the results presented by the coefficients associated with the explanatory variables related to the economic and financial performance of the companies, none presented statistical significance. Finally, although the theme of voluntary disclosure has been, extensively, discussed in the literature, it still has gaps to be explored that would contribute to the advancement of these discussions.

Rodrigues, Francisco Carlos Tadeu Starke 14 February 2008 (has links)

No. of bitstreams: 1 Francisco Carlos Tadeu S Rodrigues.pdf: 1498803 bytes, checksum: f63bb1bb5cfc2b5d376768c226ee0e41 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2008-02-14 / Instituto Presbiteriano Mackenzie / The evidences that the quality management practices contribute positively to the financial performance of a firm do not produce a consensus. It is important to take off the impression ISO 9000 is so popular that it could not deserve more intense and effective academic production; there are many effects promoted by the introduction of this standard at the organizational level in brazilian companies and they were not yet well studied. Thus, it is opportune to evaluate this world phenomenon and, certainly, in Brazil of ISO 9000 quality certification and its relation to superior financial performance of the companies. There is, in Brazil, an absence of researches related to this subject, using secondary public data, focused in publicly traded firms and using robust econometric models, to permit a certain conclusion to the brazilian context. The Akerlof-Spence approach was adopted to discuss, from the asymmetric information point of view, the adverse selection imposed to the consumers. To mitigate this, a firm should signalize its hidden attributes, creating a better image to the market and better reputation. The Akerlof-Spence approach allows to predict that, if the firms got certified, so they can search for better sales performances and, as a consequence, for better financial performances. When a firm choose to get certified, it would be signaling to the market, to its suppliers and consumers, that it has, in fact, products an services with high quality. This would allow a smaller asymmetric information and a smaller adverse selection; this also would enable a competitive advantage and would distinguish certified firms from that not certified. The certification age lasts two decades and more than 700,000 firms are certified in 161 countries around the world. Following the research line developed by two groups of researchers Terlaak and King (2006) and Corbett, Montes-Sancho and Kirsch (2005) , in this research, 207 brazilian publicly traded firms were studied for 12 years, from 1995 to 2006. There are 116 firms certified according to the 1987, 1994 and 2000 versions of ISO 9000 standard and other 91 not certified in the sample. It was employed an econometric regression model with data in static and dynamic panels, using pooled OLS, fixed effects and random effects. A non-balanced panel data with 207 firms and 2,484 observations, and a balanced panel data with 60 firms and 720 observations were assembled to research this problem. The addressed question is answered: do ISO 9000 certification permit a superior financial performance to brazilian public firms? Six hypotheses were tested, all of them related with financial performance. The six hypotheses were rejected, revealing significative results that ISO certification has a strong, direct and positive relation with financial performance of the brazilian public firms. The results of this research indicate that shareholders and managers could choose the certification as a signaling mechanism, reputation and sales growth, reduction of production costs, and improvement in ROA, ROS and ROE. ISO 9000 certification is a relevant strategic tool for competitiveness improvement.

Dias, Edson Aparecido 14 February 2008 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-03-15T19:26:34Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Edson Aparecido Dias.pdf: 907626 bytes, checksum: e4d9757a83fb8593062c00e7b381b5ee (MD5) Previous issue date: 2008-02-14 / Fundo Mackenzie de Pesquisa / There has been a lot of debate about Sustainability into the organizations recently. Some theorists state the organization should consider in their strategies elements that include the interest of the different stakeholders. This theoretical chain considers that economics, social and environmental systems are integrated, and so the organizations can t implement strategies which consider just one dimension. Other chain affirms the organizations should maximize the long term value and concentrate their efforts and investments on production and competitiveness, so they need to focus in only one objective, which is the long term value maximization of the firm, in this way, according this theory social welfare will be also maximized. In this complex context, sustainability indexes were created worldwide. These indexes in general, evaluate several dimensions and relations between the organization and society, environment and equity holders. In Brazil, was created in 2005 the sustainability index, ISE. Annually the BOVESPA announces to the market the new ISE Group, in which is included the companies that submit voluntarily, the answers to a wide survey about their sustainability practices. The inclusion on such group indicates the companies were evaluated according the rules of BOVESPA s sustainability rules. There are several discussions, if the organizations that make part of ISE group or similar, can capture abnormal returns to their shareholders, and if investments done in sustainability receive special attention by capital markets. This study investigates, using the event study methodology, if the announcement of being part of ISE group, creates value to shareholders. As event period was defined -15 to 120 days from announcement date, and in this period were created several event windows. In this research, the methodology is applied in two different ways: first; comparing the ISE group companies with a traditional Brazilian market index, the Ibovespa; second is the comparison with companies that have most part of their revenues from activities and products categorized in the same sector class (according BOVESPA) as the ISE ones, called in this study as control group. The results indicate the companies included in the ISE group do not capture Cumulated Abnormal Returns (CAR), when compared with the index market, in any event window. Anyhow, there were not found results that infer about lost of value, due the ISE announcement to the firm. By the other way, the results indicated that ISE companies can capture cumulated abnormal returns with statistically significant levels, when compared with the control group, in windows close to the announcement day. These results could be used to support manager s processes of decision, for establishing policies regarding sustainability of organizations.

Relação entre desempenho social corporativo e desempenho financeiro de empresas no Brasil / The relation between corporate social performance and financial performance of firms in Brazil

Paulo da Rocha Ferreira Borba 29 June 2005 (has links)
The major objective of this here dissertation consists in analyzing the relation between social and financial performances of Brazilian enterprises and in responding to the related inquiries. More specifically, this text investigates the causal sequence and the direction (positive or negative) taken by the relation between the variables that represent the two performance concepts. For that purpose, two variables have been used to represent the financial performance at market values, three variables have been used to represent the financial performance at book values and the Corporate Social Performance Indicator has been here constructed to represent the social performance of enterprises, based on the Social Balance Sheets published according to the Instituto Brasileiro de Análises Sociais e Econômicas (IBASE). Besides these variables, two control variables have been considered relevant in the theory: the size of the company and its industry. Both have framed the statistic model. The analysis period (from 2000 to 2002) of the relation between the variables and the research sample has been somewhat short, mostly due to the fragility of the corporate social performance database and to the embryonic condition of the issue in Administration in Brazil. The analyses have been accomplished in yearly periods, with and without one-year temporal gaps, so that six alternative hypotheses proposed for already existing model could be tested. The statistic analysis was developed through a correlations matrix, models of multiple linear regression processed by the ordinary least squares method, models of heteroskedasticity-consistent standard error and covariance regression and of robust regression. Most of the results have not been able to reject the null hypothesis of the model, which means that there is no statistically meaningful relation between corporate social and financial performances. However, some of the results provided by the regressions that adopted book value measurement of financial performance denote, at some analysis periods, the existence of a positive relation between the two performances, which somehow reinforces the idea that the administration of stakeholders may provide an improved financial performance. Nevertheless, the causal sequence of the relation has not been clear, considering that either a better or worse corporate social performance has caused a better or worse financial performance; and that the latter may have caused the former. On the other hand, the relation between the variables of corporate financial performance at market values and the corporate social performance indicator has proven quite contradictory, which enhances the results accomplished in previous researches and articles on the subject. Finally, the control variable of enterprise size has proven meaningless for the model, while the control variable of industry has presented quite diverse results. Thus, the results are inconclusive, according to the existing literature, which identifies the conceptual limitations, such as lack of definition of key-concepts; and the empirical limitations, like lack or inadequacy of database, which permeates most of the researches on the subject and deteriorates in the Brazilian reality. For new researches, special attention should be paid to the representation of corporate social performance, making it more extensive and robust; likewise, the usage of different temporal windows for the statistic model, which would allow the accomplishment of more conclusive results. It is important to notice that recent institutional initiatives in the country have met with the needs of researchers interested in the subject, which stimulates and favors the development of future investigations.

How multiple strategic orientations affect the brand performance of B2B SMEs

Anees-ur-Rehman, M. (Muhammad) 10 October 2017 (has links)
Abstract Scholars are interested in exploring strategies for better business-to-business (B2B) brand management because several strategic benefits of having a stronger B2B brand have been revealed. Contributing to this stream of research, this dissertation applies the concept of multiple strategic orientations for the purpose of improving B2B branding. The collective role of the brand, market and entrepreneurial orientations when used for improving brand equity, brand awareness, brand credibility and financial performance are examined in the dissertation. Examining this phenomenon for B2B small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) is an important and interesting topic because (1) SMEs are known for delineating multidimensional strategic orientation and (2) B2B SMEs have shown growth with the help of a stronger brand despite being less motivated to conduct branding activities and less resourceful when doing so. The results of this study could help to develop a more cohesive and coherent branding strategy for B2B SMEs. The research question of the dissertation is addressed with the help of three articles. The first article sheds light on the theoretical framework of interaction between brand, market and entrepreneurial orientations. Findings of the first article led the selection of two perspectives on interactions for examination, which were subsequently examined in the second and third articles respectively. These two perspectives on interaction are strategic hybrid orientation and moderating interaction. The first article used the systematic literature review approach, while the second and third articles used regression analysis to examine the relationship between constructs by using the data collected from 250 Finnish B2B SMEs. The results supported the presence of strategic hybrid orientation between brand and market orientations for the purpose of improving brand awareness, brand credibility and financial performance. However, insignificant results were found which did not rule out the presence of moderating interaction between brand, market and entrepreneurial orientations in improving brand equity. Further research studies are encouraged to advance the understanding of this approach of B2B branding in SMEs. The dissertation achieves novelty by being amongst the first to provide empirical evidence to support the concept of using multiple strategic orientations for B2B branding in SMEs. This study concludes by discussing the theoretical contributions and managerial implications of these results. Tutkimuskysymykseen vastataan kolmen artikkelin avulla. Ensimmäinen artikkeli tarkastelee teoreettista taustaa brändi-, markkina-, ja yrittäjyysorientaatioiden interaktiolle eli yhdysvaikutukselle. Kyseisen artikkelin tulosten perusteella valittiin tarkasteluun kaksi näkökulmaa yhdysvaikutukseen. Väitöskirja on ensimmäisiä tutkimuksia, joissa empiirisesti tarkastellaan strategisen moni-orientoitumisen käsitettä B2B- brändeihin liittyen. Tulokset kannustavatkin jatkotutkimuksiin tästä näkökulmasta. Tutkimuksen lopuksi keskustellaan tulosten teoreettisista kontribuutioista ja liikkeenjohdollisista päätelmistä.

Leveransledtidsreduktionens påverkan på finansiell prestanda : - En studie i tidens tecken / Implications of delivery lead-time reduction on financial performance : - A study in time

Augustsson, Kristoffer, Boldt, Simon January 2017 (has links)
Purpose: The study aimed to investigate how a delivery lead-time reduction impacts returnon-investment (ROI), and through the study create a decision support that quantitatively demonstrates the impact of the delivery lead-time reduction on manufacturing companies' ROI. To fulfill the purpose of the study two research questions were created: How is ROI affected by a delivery lead-time reduction? How can the impact of the delivery lead-time reduction on ROI be quantified? Method: A literature review was conducted to explain how a delivery lead-time reduction affects the ROI components. The literature review formed the theoretical framework, from which a proposition was created. With the proposition as a basis, a case study of one-case-design was carried out. The data for the first research question was collected through interviews with respondents from the focal company's market and production departments. The collected data was then pattern matched against the proposition, to develop the proposition. The answer from the first research question was then used as a basis for the quantification of the impact of the delivery lead-time reduction on ROI. During the empirical collection, there were limitations in data availability, therefore fictitious data was estimated to carry out the quantification and fulfill the second research question. Results: The study shows that there are many ways in which ROI can be affected by a delivery lead-time reduction, depending on the context, the starting point, and the approach in which the reduction is implemented. Therefore, an 8-scenario typology was created for how a delivery lead reduction can be implemented based on the six strategic lead times (SLT). Research question 1 shows, based on the data and the proposition, how delivery lead-time reduction impacts ROI in the typology’s scenario 7. Scenario 7 means a reduction in delivery lead-time, along with a reduction of the supply lead-time by reducing the external lead-time. The quantification of fictitious data, which answered the second research question, showed that it is possible to quantify the effect of the delivery lead-time reduction on ROI. Based on the approach of quantification, a decision support for investment in delivery lead-time reduction was created. Implications: The study contributes to the opportunity for practitioners to evaluate investment in delivery lead-time reduction, against other investment candidates, to strengthen the company's competitiveness. Theoretically, the study contributes with the typology for how a delivery lead-time reduction can be implemented. Also, a contribution through the proposition which shows how a delivery lead-time reduction generally affects ROI, versus the developed proposition that shows the influence based on scenario 7. Limitations: The quantification was based on fictitious data, which gave a limited result. Although it’s not the result of itself that is of interest, it is the logic of quantification, since the purpose is to develop a decision support. Also, the study is of one-case-design, whereupon the developed proposition cannot be applied on other companies without scrutiny and compared with their specific contexts.

Corporate Social Responsibility: The Future of Marketing Communications / Corporate Social Responsibility: The Future of Marketing Communications

Zidarova, Margarita January 2010 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to investigate Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) as a contribution tool to the future practices of corporate marketing communications. Another aim was to discover the current practices of CSR within corporate marketing communications with a specific focus on corporate and stakeholder value creation gained through this merging of two disciplines. Finally, the possibility of creating future competitive advantages through the use of CSR in marketing communications was also examined. The author applied a qualitative interview questionnaire as well as a quantitative survey study as primary research methods conducted for the purpose of this thesis. The interview questionnaires focused on the internal stakeholders' point of view on CSR as a marketing tool, while the survey study examined customer and external stakeholders' interest in current practices and value of CSR. The primary research was complemented by a broad literature review on the subjects of corporate marketing communications and corporate social responsibility. The main results revealed by the literature reviews and empirical research showed that corporate social responsibility has gained increasing value amongst business practitioners and external stakeholders. It was found that CSR can be executed most efficiently though public relations, and thus it helps sustain a sound corporate identity, brand, image and reputation, resulting in stakeholder loyalty and corporate value. The key findings of the research proposed that the proper use of CSR within marketing communications, by developed mid- and large-size organizations, could result in future competitive advantages in the market place. The principal concluding remark of the author was to highlight the importance of corporate social responsibility practices in marketing communications, with respect to value creation. This thesis aims to create motivation for further empirical research and development.

Costs and benefits of reducing financing costs through corporate social responsibility / Výhody a nevýhody snižování nákladů na financování skrze společenskou odpovědnost

Bandžak, Richard January 2015 (has links)
The dissertation thesis investigates the relationship between corporate social responsibility (CSR) and financial performance (FP) on the sample of 51 Eurozone banks over the period from 2008 to 2014. The investigation is based on a panel data regression analysing the financial data from Bankscope and the social performance data from CSRHub. Return on assets and the ratio of non-performing loans to total loans represent the measures of financial performance and are used as dependent variables. The results of this model have shown a positive and statistically significant CSR-FP relationship. It is argued that even though the results show statistical significance, they do not necessarily include such a strong informational value. This is caused by methodological limitations, such as potentially biased data on CSR, as well as by the theoretical ones. The main theoretical concern, detected in the dissertation thesis, is a need for redefinition of the banks' driving motives of engaging in CSR activities. Banks engaging in CSR activities for merely strategic reasons should be analysed separately on a firm-level as they may otherwise bias the empirical results. Another important aspect of the work was an argument that banks benefit from CSR mainly through the product differentiation. This could not have been tested empirically, but it is assumed that the product differentiation, for example through reputation enhancement, may play a significant role in boosting bank's profits.

Hansén, Gustaf, Abdi, Omar Said January 2020 (has links)
The issue of gender equality is a constant topic where Sweden is known as one of the most equal countries in the world. Nevertheless, the gender distribution in the top management teams (TMT) of the Swedish listed firms is generally skewed. There are no clear differences in ability between the two genders that reflect this fact. The skewed gender distribution might be a problem since TMT have an impact on firm financial performance. The study investigated the relationship between the proportion of women in the TMT and firm financial performance. In addition, the gender distribution in the TMT and the firm financial performance were examined. As a complement to the study's main research issues, we studied the risk level of firms since it is associated with financial performance. The purpose was to examine if there are any financial incentives with an increased proportion of women in top management. The theoretical perspectives on which the study was based were ‘Agency Theory’, ‘Upper Echelon Theory’ and ‘Resource Dependency Theory’. The relationships were explored quantitatively using multiple regression analysis. The regressions manifested contradictory results where the significant results showed a negative relationship between the proportion of women and ROE. The results also showed that gender diverse TMT had the lowest financial performance in terms of ROE whilst they had the highest performance when tested against Tobin's Q. Furthermore, a significant negative relationship between the proportion of female managers and the firm beta value was identified. Lastly, it was concluded that the proportion of women in TMT, as well as gender diverse TMT, do not have a unanimous relationship with firm financial performance. However, the proportion of women in TMT have a significant negative relationship with the companies' risk level.
