Desenvolvimento de modelo numerico tridimensional e eliptico para o estudo de escoamentos no interior de dutos cilindricos / Development of three-dimensional and elliptical numerical model for the study of fluid flow in cylindrical ducts

Lopes, Gabriela Cantarelli 27 June 2008 (has links)

In petrochemical industry one of these processes that are becoming more and more important is the fluid catalytic cracking of heavy petroleum fractions. This fact is due to the process capacity to convert heavy fractions in light and valuable ones. Because of the increasingly worldwide demand for gasoline and LPG and its high yield for a petroleum refinery, fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) units are present in the whole world. Experimental tests are used in the study of the phenomena involved in this processo However this kind of analysis has high cost which can be reduced by using computational simulations in its initial study. Thus, the aim of this work was the development of a three-dimensional and elliptical mo dei in Fortran language in order to provide data for fluid flow preliminary analysis in FCC reactors. Partial differential equations were used in the modeling of these problems. These equations do not have known analytical solution, being necessary therefore the use of numerical methods. In this work the Finite Volume Method were applied with this purpose. This method has as a role to substitute the partial differential equations of the mo dei for algebric equations applied to small finite control volumes of the domain. One of the biggest difficulties found in the numerical treatment of incompressible fluid flows is the determination of apressure field that satisfies the Continuity Equation. This problem was solved using the coupled solution approach. For model analysis, numerical velocity and pressure proJ:iles for laminar and turbulent flows were obtained, that had been validated using the data obtained through the analytical solution of the equations, by empirical correlations or by experimental data, according to each one of the cases. The model represented well laminar cases, and in the turbulent ones the mesh had to be more refined near the tube wall. Other simulations were performed, in aQalyzing the three-dimensional, elliptical and transient model characteristics. In general, the mo dei was very fast, converging in a few interations. Celso Luiz Felipini 24 February 2015 (has links)
This thesis presents a mathematical model for numerical simulation of swirling flow in DC non-transferred arc thermal plasma torches, as well as the results obtained from simulations to case studies. The two-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic model (MHD model) allowed simulate the interaction between the flow and the electric arc using an axisymmetric configuration, covering the following areas: gas inlet; inside the torch; free jet of plasma in the environment. The model was implemented in a computer code based on the Finite Volume Method (FVM) to enable the numerical solution of the governing equations. For the study, cases were simulated with different operating conditions (gas flow rate; electric current intensity; plasmogenic gases: air and argon; swirl intensity). In order to verify the quality of the model, some results were compared with the literature and showed good agreement: the biggest difference between experimental temperature values and calculated values was 10%, and the average of the differences obtained in the comparisons was approximately ±3.2%. The resulting profiles of temperature and velocity obtained for the region of the arc and the plasma jet allowed the study of the flow behavior in the plasma torch in different conditions. It is concluded that the model developed is able to carry out numerical investigations of the flow in plasma torches and the effects of swirl in the interaction arc/flow.

Modélisation hybride et multi-échelle pour la simulation des écoulements et des transferts thermiques dans les micro-canaux / Hybrid and multi-scale modeling for the simulation of fluid flows and heat transfer in microchannels

Vu, Van Huyen 13 December 2016 (has links)
The main objective of this thesis is to model the multi-scale heat and fluid flows in micro-/nano channels. This method must be able of capturing at the same time the fluid/solid interaction at the small scale but also the flows induced by the inlet/outlet boundary conditions at the large scale. To this aim, we have adopted an approach coupling the continuum model in the bulks of the channel and the discrete model at the vicinity of the wall, based on an atomistic representation of the fluid and the solid. The Navier-Stokes and energy equations, coupled with an equation of state, are approximated by a finite volume method and the molecular dynamics simulations are used to finely represent the interaction between the fluid and the solid. This hybrid method requires information transmission between the former two regions: averaged quantity in molecular dynamics simulations are imposed as boundary conditions for the continuous model and constrained dynamics, coupled with a thermostat Langevin, is used to control in the molecular level. A set of small molecular dynamics blocks, smartly distributed all along the wall/fluid interface, allows to treat flow and heat transfers in a long micro/nano-channel with a reasonable computational cost. After a validation step, the hybrid multi-scale simulations of complex fluid flows in the channel composed of the platinum wall have been conducted for argon in incompressible liquid or compressible gaseous phase with and without phase change in the vicinity of the wall

Simulation à l’échelle microscopique et analyse macroscopique de l’imprégnation d’un matériau composite par un fluide chargé en particules / Microscopic simulation and macroscopic analysis of impregnation process of composite material by a concentrated suspension

Dugois, Kévin 13 February 2017 (has links)
In order to improve thermo-mechanical behavior of tubine blades in SAFRAN engines plane, a new composite material is necessary. The manufacturing process to obtain this composite is intricate and requires a two steps fluid densification process. This thesis focuses on numerical simulation of the first one called Slurry Cats/APS. In this step, suspended particles are introducted and captured in the reinforcement. For that purpose,we carry out a model at fiber scale, using Navier-Stokes equations in incompressible and monophasic formulation, Phillips equations [Phillips et al., 1992] and a rheological law [Krieger, 1972]. After validation step consisting in a comparison of computational results with experiments [Hampton et al., 1997] and theorical law [Belfort et al., 1994], this model has been used to simulate flow around geometries similar to those encountered in our composite material.

Contribution to numerical simulation of electrohydrodynamics flows : application to electro-convection and electro-thermo-convection between two parallel plates / Contribution à la simulation numérique d'écoulements électrohydrodynamiques : application à l'électro-convection et l'électro-thermo-convection entre deux plans parallèles

Wu, Jian 17 September 2012 (has links)
In this thesis, a numerical approach is presented to simulate the electro- and electro-thermo convection in dielectric liquids. The total variation diminishing (TVD) scheme and improved deferred correction (IDC) scheme are used to compute the convective and diffusive respectively. The aim of TVD scheme is to avoid non-physical oscillations and to capture high gradient of charge density. Some fundarnental aspects related to TVD and LDC schemes are investigated firstly. A unified approach for TVD schemes is explained and various limiter functions are compared. The connection among three methods for diffusive flux computation has been revealed. The original IDC scheme is improved by the application of 2nd order gradient evaluation method. The electro-convection between two parallel plates is then simulated. The methodology was assessed by the determination of the linear and nonlinear stability criterion. By continuously increasing the driving parameter, the successive instabilities and route to chaotic state has been defined. The effects of the diffusion mechanism for the charge density and vertical walls on the hysteresis 100p and the structure are also investigated. The last part is to simuiate electro-thermo-convection when injection and thermal gradient are simultaneously applied. Our solver was verified with a stationary and an overstable stability problem. The case that both heating and injection are from a bottom electrode has been analyzed in details. The neutral stabiliïy curve was reproduced. The existence of nonlinear phenornenon and the structure are highlighted.

An integrated finite element and finite volume code to solve thermo-hydro-mechanical problems in porous media

Gosavi, Shekhar Vishwanath January 1900 (has links)
Doctor of Philosophy / Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering / Daniel V. Swenson / The objective of the thesis is to provide a fully coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) tool, T2STR, which enables quantitative understanding and prediction of thermal as well as mechanical effects on flow in the porous media under multiphase conditions. This is achieved by incorporating a finite element based hydro-thermo-mechanical stress capability into the well-established IFDM (Integrated Finite Difference Method) based flow simulation code TOUGH2. TOUGH2 is a program for calculation of multi-phase, multi-component, non-isothermal flow in porous media. It implements several equation of state modules to represent different fluid mixtures. The dual mesh technique is natural for combining both discretization methods and is used innovatively and effectively. A generalized approach is developed to accommodate the switching of variables implemented in TOUGH2 to adapt the phase changes. The forward coupling is achieved by using the thermal, hydrostatic, and poroelastic effects in the stress calculations. The backward coupling includes the effect of strain on the fluid flow. T2STR also allows the user to study the variation in porosity, permeability and capillary pressure as function of mean effective stress in the porous media. Multiple materials can be used to model the reservoir in T2STR, parallel to the implementation in TOUGH2. T2STR is implemented to carry out as a fully coupled, one way coupled (only deformation as function of hydro-thermal effects), or original TOUGH2 implementation. It provides the ability to switch on and off the thermal and/or poroelastic effects. T2STR is developed to model the fractured porous media using discrete fractures. The modeling of fractured porous media is limited to a staggered coupling approach. The fluid parameters like permeability, porosity are modified based on the stresses and/or aperture changes due to deformation. A set of verification problems, used to validate the code and display the capabilities of the code, are discussed. A graphical user interface is designed to pre-process the necessary data. Macros are developed for excel and Tecplot to post-process the results for easy visualization.

Étude du ballottement de fluide dans les réservoirs à carburant : approches numérique et expérimentale / Study of liquid sloshing in fuel tanks : numerical and experimental investigation

Brandely, Anaïs 26 May 2016 (has links)
The present thesis focuses on an investigation of the sloshing phenomenon in a partially filled fuel tank submitted to a harmonic excitation motion. In the first part, the confrontation of numerical results between a linear approach - taking into account viscosity - and a nonlinear approach based on a commercial code leads to define a parameter of linearity. This parameter allows determining cases of sloshing who require non-linear resolution and those who need a linear theory to predict the phenomenon. An experimental study of fluid sloshing in a rectangular tank submitted to an automotive braking is conducted. Tests leaded allow measuring global forces engendered by the motion of the fluid, pressure of fluid impact and velocity field by PIV. This chapter provides an important data base and helps to investigate on the physical phenomenon. This study is completed by CFD results. To conclude, a numerical model for fluid-structure interactions is presented. Limits of this segregated partitioned coupling in case of sloshing in tank flexibly attached are highlighted, depending mostly on the mass ratio between fluid and tank structure. An added-mass term is integrated to the corrected staggered scheme ensuring systematically the convergence of the coupled solution and reducing significantly the iterations required.

Analyse numérique d'une approximation élément fini pour un modèle d'intrusion saline dans les aquifères côtiers / Numerical analysis of finite element approximation for a modele of saltwater intrusion into coastal aquifers

Abudawia, Amel 15 December 2015 (has links)
In this work, we study a finite element scheme we apply to a model describing saltwater intrusion into coastal aquifers confined and free. The model is based on the hydraulic approach of vertically averaging the 3D original problem, this approximation is based on a quasi-hydrostatic flow hypothesis which, instead of the walls and springs, is checked. To model the interface between freshwater and salt water (respectively between the saturated zone and dry zone), we combine the approach net interface (approach with the diffuse interface) ; This approach is derived from the phase field theory introduced by Allen-Cahn, to describe the phenomena of transition between two zones. Given these approximations, the problem consists of a strongly couple to edps parabolic quasi-linear system in the case of unconfined aquifers describing the evolution of the depths of two free surfaces and elliptical-parabolic type in the case confined aquifer, the unknowns being then the depth of salt water / fresh water and the hydraulic load of fresh water. In the first part of the thesis, we give in the case of a confined aquifer, error estimation results of a semi-implicit scheme in a combined time discretization space finite element type Pk Lagrange. This result among other uses a regularity result of the gradient of the exact solution in the space Lr(ΩT), r > 2, which can handle the non-linearity and to establish the error estimate under assumptions reasonable regularity of the exact solution. In the second part of the thesis, we generalize the previous study to the case of the free aquifer. The main difficulty is related to the complexity of the system of parabolic edps but again, thanks to regularity result Lr(ΩT), r > 2 gradients established for the free surfaces, we show that the scheme is of order 1 time and space k for sufficiently regular solutions. We conclude this work by numerical simulations in different contexts (impact of porosity and hydraulic conductivity of the evolution of the interface, and pumping fresh water injection, tidal effects) thus validating the model and diagram. The we compare the results with those obtained using a finite volume scheme constructed from a structured mesh.

Laís Corrêa 14 December 2015 (has links)
The main objective of this work is to develop a numerical method for large eddy simulation of tridimensional turbulent flows using a model based on temporal filtering (TLES - Temporal Large Eddy Simulation). The developed method combines at least 2nd order temporal discretizations (Adams-Bashforth, QUICK, Runge-Kutta), a 2nd order projection method, and 2nd order spatial discretizations obtained by the finite volume method. This methodology was employed to the simulation of turbulent benchmark problems such as channel and lid-driven cavity flows. The latter is simulated for the first time using a TLES turbulence modelling. Results show excellent agreement when compared to Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) and experimental data, with better results than classical results produced by standard LES formulation with spatial filtering.
