Experiences of induction by beginner educators in Bochum East Circuit, Limpopo provinceMatsebane, Thobja Marcus 09 1900 (has links)
Induction for teacher development is important for quality teaching and learning to take place in schools. The process of induction should be well-structured so that it is not mistaken as just an orientation to school procedures; it should be well-planned and implemented for the purposes of professional development and support (Rolley, 2001). The main aim of this study was to investigate beginner educators’ experiences of the induction process for professional development in the Bochum East Circuit of Limpopo Province. The assumption was that if schools are held accountable for learner performance, then support measures in terms of induction should be provided to newly appointed educators. Poor performance or educator turnover can sometimes be ascribed to inadequate interventions or the design of educator induction programmes. Although educators may have received the best training at university or training college, they still need to adjust to the realities of classrooms.
To achieve the aim of the study, a qualitative research approach was followed to collect data through semi-structured interviews. The study is ensconced in the Educator Development Theory which acknowledges that educator preparation is rarely sufficient to provide all the knowledge and skills necessary for successful teaching. A great deal of knowledge and many skills are, mostly, acquired while on the job and principals should, therefore, adequately induct newly appointed educators. Four beginner educators and two principals from average performing primary schools were purposively sampled in the Bochum East Circuit of the Limpopo Province. A thematic analysis was carried out to generate themes that addressed the problem of the study. The findings from participant responses revealed differences in an understanding of the induction process. Support from the principal, HoDs and fellow colleagues were considered to be part of induction. Recommendations include that educators should be given continuous professional development through standardised induction programmes which could be adjusted to the needs of the school.
The purpose of this study was to verify motor stimulation opportunities in four different contexts (Family environment, Child Educational School, Shelters and a Prison) (article 1), to describe motor and social development of children in each context (articles 2 and 3) and to verify association between stimulation opportunities found in the contexts and motor development of children at their first year of life (article 4). The sample of this research was composed of 89 children aging between 0 and 12 incomplete months (25 children in a family environment, 26 children in child educational schools, 23 children in shelters and 15 children in a prison). In article number 1, the results showed that from the four evaluated contexts of child development, the child educational school was the one that offered more opportunities to development as assessed by the instrument in all categories showed by the instrument and also the items quantity in each category, regarding to the other evaluated contexts.Regarding to article number 2, that evaluated motor development in children in four different development contexts, it was possible to verify that motor development delay prevalence in the studied sample was found in the child educational schools, where 39% of the children showed delays, followed by children in shelters (30%). Children evaluated in family environment and in the prison showed higher percentage in classification of normality in motor development, 48% of the children in family environment and 47% in the prison. Regarding to article number 3, that evaluated social profile of children, it was possible to detect that children whose mothers were close (family environment and prison) and who spent a lot of time with them had better performance regarding to motor e social development, when compared to children who remained in common environments most of the day (child school) or the whole day (shelters). In article number 4 it was verified that there were few associations between development contexts and variables assessed by the AHMED-SR. Family environment was the place that showed more associations between motor development and motor stimulation opportunities, and it was the place where children had a better classification related to motor development. It’s possible to conclude that development contexts (Family environment and Prison) where there was a relationship between the child and a sensible adult (in this case the mothers), who was capable of recognizing the child’s needs and answer them appropriately, were environments more suitable to development. Making child schools and shelters environments more appropriate for child development is something questionable, because of possible risks to children, determined by incapability of providing required care and attention to children, especially in their first year of life. The prevalence of and risk factors for neck pain in first year Faculty of Health Science students at the Durban University of TechnologyGevers, Giselle Lara January 2018 (has links)
Submitted in partial compliance with the requirements for the Master's Degree in Technology: Chiropractic, Durban University of Technology, Durban, South Africa, 2018. / INTRODUCTION: Neck pain is considered to be one of the most disabling conditions, with a universal prevalence among youth, adult and elderly populations. However, despite its disabling nature and its high prevalence there is still much uncertainty surrounding the aetiology of the pain and the extent to which the condition is influenced by the intrinsic and extrinsic characteristics of an individual. While there is growing evidence to support the notion that marked bio-psychosocial associations exist with neck pain, this literature is heavily weighted toward an adult and a developed nation context leaving developing nations and the student population largely under-researched in comparison. Moreover, while a high prevalence of neck pain and its associated risk factors exist in the student population among health sciences and non-health sciences programmes, across many levels of study, the literature is ambivalent about which faculty and level of study is more at risk, if any. The first year of university stands out among the rest in that the students undergo a significant transition and are required to adapt to a new environment and style of learning compared to what they have been used to. Furthermore, students have been observed to exit first year with higher levels of distress than were present in the beginning of the year, suggesting that this unique environment may influence the psychosocial well-being of students. The extent and strength of this relationship is yet to be determined in a South African tertiary educational context and this is even more true of the first year student population at the Durban University of Technology. Research on the unique bio-psychosocial factors of these students would provide a more holistic understanding of the extent to which these factors exist and the role they play in the general well-being of the students and in the development of neck pain.
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: This study aimed, firstly, to determine the prevalence and psychosocial risk factors of neck pain in registered first year Faculty of Health Sciences students at the Durban University of Technology and, secondly, to determine the association between neck pain presentation, demographic characteristics, socio-demographic and psychosocial risk factors. The outcomes of this study could possibly have a threefold benefit (for the student, the institution, and the chiropractic profession at large).
RESEARCH DESIGN: A quantitative, descriptive, cross-sectional survey design was adopted in this research. This design was chosen as it was believed to be the best suited to achieving the aims and objectives of the study.
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY: Neck pain questionnaires were administered to the first year Faculty of Health Sciences students at the Durban University of Technology towards the end of the academic year in order to determine the prevalence of neck pain and its associated demographic, socio-demographic, and psychosocial risk factors. There was a final sample size of 135 participants achieving a response rate of 54.7% for the study. Data was captured by the researcher and sent to a statistician for statistical analysis.
RESULTS: A high prevalence of neck pain was found among the students (72%) with symptoms of depression (59.8%), anxiety (68.1%), and stress (53.6%) also being highly prevalent among this group. However, when neck pain was quantified by its characteristics the related impact was comparatively low. There was a common theme observed in the results highlighting the association between stress and neck pain, with stress furthermore being determined as an independent risk factor for neck pain (p = 0.023) with an odds ratio of 1.1. This result was not surprising, however, considering the stressors which emerged in the results highlighting factors such as transport protests, student protests, upcoming tests and financial aid as stress causing factors among the participants. The results provided valuable insight which enabled recommendations to be made about the direction of future research as well as recommendations for the Institution and the Chiropractic profession in the approach and management of students enrolled in tertiary education and with neck pain. / M

Assessing Intercultural Competence in Writing Programs through Linked CoursesHadi Banat (9024011) 27 July 2020 (has links)
<p>Internationalization of higher education is a collaborative
responsibility academic and non-academic programs share to facilitate the integration
of various student populations within the broader culture of the university. My
dissertation project links First Year Writing (FYW) classes of domestic and
international students to promote and evaluate their intercultural competence
development. My research questions explore the use of reflective writing as a
genre for formative assessment in the writing classroom and investigate the
data it provides about students’ continuous learning. My research methodology
combines qualitative analysis of reflective writing and quantitative analysis
of intercultural competence development. Participants come from four sections
of FYW courses spanning two semesters – Spring 2016 and Fall 2017. I collected reflective
writing data from four embedded reflective journals and a final reflective
essay assigned to students in each section. Using a grounded scheme, I applied
thematic coding analysis of reflective writing and traced frequencies of codes.
I also mapped students’ reflections onto the Developmental Model of
Intercultural Sensitivity (DMIS; Bennett, 1993). Results from both coding
methods contextualize and interpret students’ development in both intercultural
competence and writing skills. I also share pedagogical, assessment, and
administrative implications for more effective teaching of reflective writing
and better continuous assessment of intercultural competence skills within the
context of the linked course model curriculum. </p>

The role of mathematics in first year students’ understanding of electricity problems in physicsKoontse, Reuben Double 04 1900 (has links)
Mathematics plays a pertinent role in physics. Students' understanding of this role has significant implications in their understanding of physics. Studies have shown that some students prefer the use of mathematics in learning physics. Other studies show mathematics as a barrier in students' learning of physics. In this study the role of mathematics in students' understanding of electricity problems was examined. The study undertakes a qualitative approach, and is based on an intepretivist research paradigm.
A survey administered to students was used to establish students' expectations on the use of mathematics in physics. Focus group interviews were conducted with the students to further corroborate their views on the use of mathematics in physics. Copies of students' test scripts were made for analysis on students' actual work, applying mathematics as they were solving electricity problems.
Analysis of the survey and interview data showed students' views being categorised into what they think it takes to learn physics, and what they think about the use of mathematics in physics. An emergent response was that students think that, problem solving in physics means finding the right equation to use. Students indicated that they sometimes get mathematical answers whose meaning they do not understand, while others maintained that they think that mathematics and physics are inseparable.
Application of a tailor-made conceptual framework (MATHRICITY) on students work as they were solving electricity problems, showed activation of all the original four mathematical resources (intuitive knowledge, reasoning primitives, symbolic forms and interpretive devices). Two new mathematical resources were identified as retrieval cues and sense of instructional correctness. In general, students were found to be more inclined to activate formal mathematical rules, even when the use of basic or everyday day mathematics that require activation of intuitive knowledge elements and reasoning primitives, would be more efficient.
Students' awareness of the domains of knowledge, which was a measure of their understanding, was done through the Extended Semantic Model. Students' awareness of the four domains (concrete, model, abstract, and symbolic) was evident as they were solving the electricity questions. The symbolic domain, which indicated students' awareness of the use of symbols to represent a problem, was the most prevalent. / Science and Technology Education / D. Phil.
