Habitat Selection in Four Sympatric Small Mammal Species and the Effects of Potential Predators on Peromyscus Leucopus

Chupp, Adam Daniel 01 January 2005 (has links)
I examined the effects of potential predators in relation to habitat selection in Peromyscus leucopus. I also examined habitat selection in three other sympatric species (Blarina brevicauda, Blarina carolinensis, Sorex longirostris). I utilized data fiom 49 sampling sites on National Park Service land; Petersburg National Battlefield Eastern Front Unit (15), Five-Forks Unit (17), Appomattox Court House National Historical Park (15) and Booker T. Washington National Monument (12). Sites were categorized by location (park unit) and habitat type (i.e. bottom-land hardwood), and the microhabitat within each sampling site was characterized by four variables (% cover of grasses, herbs, shrubs, and volume of downed wood). Importance values of tree species within each sampling site were also measured. Peromyscus leucopus, B. brevicauda, B. carolinensis, and S. longirostris were captured in all habitat types. Low capture rates for shrew species and high variability in the abundance of shrew species among all sampling sites were likely responsible for the lack of differences in abundance among habitats (p > 0.05). Peromyscus leucopus represented 76% of the captures among prey species and was the only species to demonstrate differences in relative abundance among habitat types. The relative abundance of P. leucopus was higher in bottom-land hardwood habitat when compared to pine forest plantation habitat (ANOVA, p P. leucopus among these habitat types may be explained by differences in understory structural diversity. Furthermore, the corresponding increase in the relative abundance of Procyon lotor (the most abundant predator during the study) in structurally heterogeneous habitat (bottom-land hardwood) suggests the importance of anti-predator behaviors within these habitat types. Ultimately, this may suggest that prey cannot escape the presence or calculate the abundance of predators and instead simply avoid dangerous habitats. Although the relative abundance of the most abundant predator (P. lotor) and prey (P. leucopus) species were positively associated within certain habitat types, a negative association between predator and prey species abundance was evident within parks. In the Eastern Front unit the relative abundance of prey (P. leucopus, S. longirostris) was lower in comparison to the Five-Forks unit while the abundance of P. lotor was higher (ANOVA, p P. lotor, Didelphis virginiana, and Urocyon cinereoargenteus were higher in the Eastern Front unit when compared to the Five-Forks unit. It appeared that the lethal effects of predators are evident at larger scales (within parks) despite the anti-predator behaviors of prey at smaller scales (within microhabitats). My results indicate that at larger scales (within parks) the lethal effects (removal of prey) of abundant predators may overwhelm the non-lethal effects (anti-predator behavior) exhibited by prey at smaller scales, especially in areas where structurally heterogenous habitats are lacking.

La privation de sépulture au Moyen Âge : l'exemple de la Province ecclésiastique de Bordeaux (Xe-début du XIVe siècles) / Burial deprivation in the Middle Ages. The case of the ecclesiastical province of Bordeaux (10th - early 14th century)

Vivas, Mathieu 24 October 2012 (has links)
From the mid-10th century, together with the emergency and the development of a community conscientiousness, the medieval Christian Church sets up a consecrated cemetery forbidden to the "bad Dead". At the same time, the landscape and the social practices change due to a better defined guidance of the Faithful on liturgical, sacramental and juridical aspects. From the 11th century and more particularly by the 12th and 13th centuries, the decretalists, liturgists and Canonists list out a number of "bad Christians' " groups deprived of sepultura ecclesiastica, who were previously regarded as "outsiders" by the historians of written sources and the archaeologists. Despite of the ecclesiastical justice being uncompromising regarding the future of murderers, arsonists, jousters, and more generally, those who have been excommunicated, their reintegration within the Church is pondered. This study, promoting a multidisciplinary approach (written and archaeological sources), aims at understanding these funeral bans, as well as assessing in a new light the management of burial areas and their edges. It not only tends to shed light on the future of the bodies deprived of sepultura ecclesiastica, but it also raises the question on assuming the care of the "bad Dead" by the civil and lay/secular authorities. As such, it leads to see the execution areas (patibulary forks, gallows, etc.) as a full-fledged type of gathering the "bad Dead"

Převodové ústrojí vozu Formula student Dragon 7 / Design of transmission mechanism for Formula Student Dragon 7

Fanta, Tomáš January 2017 (has links)
This thesis examines the various types of transmissions which allow to seamlessly change gears without interrupting the transfer of a motor's power output. In particular, it elaborates on the advantages and disadvantages each design presents for a FormulaStudent/SAE vehicle. Furthermore, the thesis explores the selection of gear ratios and simulates acceleration parameters in order to achieve the best possible dynamic behavior. What is more, the thesis presents a concrete implementation of a transmission for the Husqvarna FE 501 motorcycle redesigned with the Zeroshift mechanism. It includes a fundamental change in the operation of the clutch as well as a gear stress analysis. Last but not least, the TU Brno Racing team incorporated the main conclusions of the thesis into the team's vehicle in order to improve the team's standings in international races.

The Press and the Historical Development of Three Women's Intercollegiate Athletic Programs in the Upper Midwest, 1950-1980

Teigen, Danielle Ann January 2011 (has links)
From 1950-1980, women's intercollegiate athletic programs experienced exponential growth, with newspapers rarely detailing the journey until Title IX passed in 1972. This project examined how women's athletics developed at North Dakota State University, the University of North Dakota, and Minnesota State University Moorhead, as well as the correlating press coverage. Articles from two regional newspapers and three student newspapers from 1950-1980 illustrated the coverage women's athletics received, while women integrally involved in the three athletic programs from 1950-1980 supplemented the coverage and further explained the development. This thesis proposes a cohesive narrative of the press coverage associated with the development of three women's intercollegiate athletic programs in the Midwest from 1950-1980. The project also speculates on the reasons why different newspapers covered women's athletics in the area differently and why 1975 emerged as a watershed year for women's athletics at NDSU, UND, and MSUM.

Tse Keh Nay-European Relations and Ethnicity: 1790s-2009

Sims, Daniel 06 1900 (has links)
This thesis examines Tse Keh Nay (Sekani) ethnic identity over three periods of Aboriginal-European relations: the fur trade period, the missionary period, and the treaty and reserve period. It examines the affects these three periods have had on the Tse Keh Nay as an ethnic group in four chapters, the first two dealing with the fur trade and missionary periods, and the last two with the treaty and reserve aspects of the treaty and reserve period. In it I argue that during the first two periods wider Tse Keh Nay ethnic identity was reinforced, while during the latter period local Tse Keh Nay identities were reinforced through government policies that dealt with Tse Keh Nay subgroups on a regional and localized basis. Despite this shift in emphasis, wider Tse Keh Nay ethnic identity has remained, proving that Tse Keh Nay ethnic identity is both situational and dynamic. / History
