Previous issue date: 2016-04-19 / A produção poética e artística desta pesquisa, na linha de Processos de Criação e Poéticas do Cotidiano, transita entre as especificidades do velho e do novo, de seus conteúdos, das materialidades e imaterialidades. O trabalho intitulado Repositório dos Sentidos é um audiovisual, escolhido como primeiro objeto de análise por apontar uma série de questões relacionadas a percepção, a experienciação e aos modos de captura e edição. Estas questões poderão ser encontradas ao longo do texto também em outros trabalhos apresentados. Através do método cartográfico, conecto a escrita, a fotografia, a música, e o audiovisual seguidas de alguns posicionamentos como artista-pesquisador em relação ao momento em que vivemos - de inseguranças, incertezas, degeneração e mutação de princípios e valores. Através da minha produção no campo da arte contemporânea penso em: O que posso repor, como posso cuidar? Como isso afeta a nós e nossos ambientes? Como parte do processo, investigo, percebo, experimento e noto que estas respostas estão no trabalho, são encontradas nele ou por indícios através dele. Tento compreender o porquê de um local escolhido para vivenciá-lo e capturá-lo? O que é ativado após produzir, assistir e escutar os fragmentos gerados? Como é ter um trabalho artístico pronto, composto com fragmentos de uma experienciação? Apresento o Estado de Escuta como um estado perceptivo e sensorial. Ao longo do texto, este tipo de estado será tratado sob diversas compreensões, de maneira que, cada sub-capítulo dirá um pouco sobre ele. A partir de cada trabalho, torna-se possível refletir e expressar diversas percepções sobre o que seria um estado de escuta. Apresentarei também o Andejo - relativo a movimento - como responsável por esculpir o meu modo de olhar, de escutar e produzir. Com isto, trago os conceitos operatórios de olhar-andejo e escuta-andeja como proposições perceptivas que enunciam o andejar. A ideia de fundar um lugar a partir de um trabalho artístico, teve como objetivo experienciar e eternizar com fragmentos visuais e sonoros capturados, novos trabalhos-lugares. São autores chave desta pesquisa: Pallasmaa, Larrosa, Schafer, Tuan - experiência e percepção; Tarkovski, Cao Guimarães, Bill Viola, Cage, Pink Floyd - audiovisual/artista/música; Mafessoli, Deleuze e Guattari - mental, coletivo, ambiental. Com base em uma análise pautada nas relações humanas e atravessada pelos andejos surgiram novas opções e formatos de apresentação dos trabalhos audiovisuais de maneira interventiva. Propondo um outro ritmo de imersão e fruição estética através das proposições em arte sonora e/ou visual. E outro posicionamento e reflexões em relação ao outro - o coletivo, a natureza, o não humano -, compreendendo a partir de alguns autores, que beiramos um limite e precisamos fazer um movimento inverso em direção a um bem estar mental, social, ambiental com a arte. / specifics of the old and the new, their contents, materialities and immaterialities. The work entitled Sense Repository is an audiovisual, chosen as first analyzed object by pointing out a number of issues related to perception, experiencing and capture and editing modes. These issues can be found throughout the text and also in other submissions. Through the mapping method, we connect the writing, photography, music, and audiovisual followed by a few positions as an artist-researcher in relation to the time in which we live - insecurities, uncertainties, degeneration and mutation of principles and values. Through my production in the field of contemporary art I think about: What can I replace? How can I take care? How does it affect us and our environment? As part of the process, I investigate, understand, experiment and notice that these answers are at the work, are found in it or through indications in it. I try to understand why a place was chosen to experience it and capture it? What is activated after producing, watching and listening to the fragments generated? How does it feel to have an artwork finished, made with fragments of an experience? I present the State of Listening as a perceptual and sensory state. Throughout the text, this type of state will be seen under various understandings, so that each sub-chapter will tell a little about it. From each work, it becomes possible to reflect and express different perceptions of what would be a listening state. I also introduce - the wandering – related to movement - as responsible for carving my way of looking, listening and producing. With this, we bring the operational concepts to wander-see and wander-listen as perceptual propositions that state the wandering. The idea of founding a place from an artistic work, aimed at experience and perpetuate, with visual and audio fragments captured, new work-places. The key authors of this research are: Pallasmaa, Larrosa, Schafer, Tuan - experience and perception; Tarkovsky, Cao Guimarães, Bill Viola, Cage, Pink Floyd - audiovisual / artist / song; Mafessoli, Deleuze and Guattari - mental, collective, environmental. Based on an analysis guided in human relations and crossed by wanderings, new options and presentation of audiovisual works of interventional way formats emerged, proposing another rhythm of immersion and aesthetic enjoyment through the propositions in sound and / or visual art, besides a new positioning and reflections in relation to the other - the collective, the nature, the non-human – understanding, from some authors, that we border a limit and need to do a reverse movement with the art, toward a mental, social and environmental well-being.

Higher education has always occupied an important place in this nation's concerns. This study was undertaken in an attempt to determine how the Founding Fathers, especially the nation's first six presidents, regarded the subject of higher education. The study was limited to these six men because they were charged with inaugurating the new government and because these six men were all participants in the drafting and ratifying of the Constitution. Findings for this study came from the personal and private papers of the first six presidents, government documents, and the press. A comparison of the findings indicates that these men shared many beliefs while disagreeing on some aspects of higher education.

Tipos móveis de metal da Funtimod: contribuições para história tipográfica brasileira A fundição de tipos móveis de metal foi uma atividade primordial para o funcionamento das artes gráficas desde seu desenvolvimento, no século 15, até meados do século 20. Entretanto, as primeiras casas fundidoras foram instaladas no Brasil apenas no começo dos anos oitocentistas - quando a técnica ainda era realizada com procedimentos manuais -, poucos anos depois da corte portuguesa ter permitido a reprodução de impressos em território nacional. Inovações tecnológicas do século 19, principalmente máquinas fundidoras e equipamentos para gravar punções e matrizes, transformaram as oficinas de fundição em indústrias. Dentro deste contexto industrial, a Funtimod, objeto de estudo desta pesquisa de doutorado, operou durante quase todo o século 20. A empresa, que pode ser considerada a maior fundição de tipos brasileira, foi fundada na cidade de São Paulo, em 1932, por uma colaboração entre os alemães Karl H. Klingspor e Josef Tscherkassky, a empresa alemã-brasileira Sociedade Técnica Bremensis e a fundição suíça Haas, que estava representando a fundição alemã D. Stempel. Com filiais em Belo Horizonte, Curitiba, Porto Alegre, Recife e Rio de Janeiro, a Funtimod serviu a indústria gráfica nos quatro cantos do País, comercializando máquinas e todo tipo de material tipográfico. Embora os tipos móveis de metal fundidos pela empresa sejam o foco desta investigação, o estudo de caso Funtimod também abordou sua trajetória histórica e a fábrica de tipos, por intermédio de coleta de dados em cinco fontes de evidência diferentes: registros, documentos, entrevistas, observações não-participantes e artefatos físicos. Desse modo, foi possível salientar a dependência de empresas alemãs para o desenvolvimento dos negócios no que tange aos produtos comercializados. Se a Funtimod estava aparelhada, nos moldes das fundições europeias, para manufaturar um tipo desde o desenho até a fundição, definitivamente, o design das faces não foi uma etapa valorizada. Grande parte dos tipos encontrados em nove catálogos da Funtimod, com repertórios tipográficos diferentes, foi identificada como sendo de origem alemã, principalmente das firmas D. Stempel e Klingspor. E, apesar de algumas faces não terem sido identificadas em outras fundições brasileiras ou estrangeiras, não foram encontradas evidências de que a Funtimod tenha lançado no Brasil alguma face com desenho original. A coleção de tipos Funtimod, por outro lado, é formada por faces representativas do começo do século 20, como Futura, Kabel, Memphis e Mondial, assim como revivals da Bodoni e Garamond. Análises comparativas dos tipos móveis de metal da Funtimod revelaram práticas singulares realizadas na fábrica de tipos brasileira. No meio de designs internacionalmente conhecidos, por exemplo, alguns caracteres, em especial os conjugados com os diacríticos til e cedilha, apresentam variações de forma, posicionamento, peso e tamanho na mesma face. As considerações desta investigação contribuem para a história tipográfica brasileira de uma forma particular, numa relação intrínseca com a Alemanha, que, sobretudo, levaram-me a questionar o quão brasileira a Funtimod realmente foi. / Type founding was one of the most important activities for the graphic arts since its beginning in the fifteenth century until the middle of twentieth century. However, the first type foundries were only installed in Brazil in the beginning of 1800s a few years after the Portuguese Court allowed printing in Brazilian lands, and when the technique was still performed with manual methods. Technical innovations developed in the nineteenth century, mainly, typecasting machines and pantograph punchcutting machines, which transformed type foundries into industries. Within this industrial context, Funtimod, the subject of this doctoral research and the largest Brazilian type foundry, operated during almost the entire twentieth century. Funtimod was founded in 1932 in São Paulo by a collaboration of two Germans (Karl H. Klingspor and Josef Tscherkassky), the German-Brazilian company Sociedade Técnica Bremensis, and the Swiss type foundry Haas. With branches in Belo Horizonte, Curitiba, Porto Alegre, Recife e Rio de Janeiro, Funtimod supplied the graphic industry across the four corners of the country, selling all kinds of typographic materials as well as machines. Although the movable metal types cast by the company were the focus of this investigation, the case study of Funtimod also explored its historic development and the factory, through data gathered from multiple sources: specimens, documents, interviews, non-participant observations, and physical artefacts. Thereby, the evidence suggests Funtimod\'s reliance on German companies for its business development in respect to the products manufactured in Brazil. Seeing that Funtimod was equipped, like European foundries, to manufacture types from the design until the casting phases, definitely, the originality of the typeface\'s design was not considered valuable by the factory. The majority of faces, which were found in nine specimens with different typographic collections, were identified as being German, especially from D. Stempel and Klingspor foundries. Moreover, although some of the faces have not been identified in other foundries, evidence was not found that Funtimod had released in Brazil any face cast with an original design. Funtimod type collection, on the other hand, is composed with representative faces from the beginning of the twentieth century, such as Futura, Kabel, Memphis, Mondial, as well as revivals of Bodoni and Garamond. Comparative analysis of movable metal types from Funtimod revealed that singular practices were performed at the Brazilian type foundry. Among internationally well-known faces, for instance, some characters, especially the ones joined with the tilde and cedilla diacritics, presented variations in form, position, weight and size. The findings of this investigation contribute to the Brazilian typographic history in a particular way, in a intrinsic relationship with Germany, that, above all, led me to question how Brazilian Funtimod really was.

O estudo relaciona temas relevantes e atuais: a economia solidária e a indústria têxtil e de confecção inserida no contexto contemporâneo da moda. As propostas da economia solidária vão ao encontro das questões sociais e ambientais, evidenciadas nos últimos anos em decorrência das revelações sobre a precarização do trabalho e a exploração de recursos naturais na cadeia têxtil e de confecção e, sugere uma nova forma de economia, que visa a geração de renda e trabalho. Por outro lado, apresentase relevante observar a aplicação de atributos relativos à construção da moda brasileira, que fazem referência à elementos da natureza tropical e edênica, considerados nesta pesquisa como referências do Mito Fundador. Como um empreendimento econômico solidário atuante na indústria têxtil e de confecção nacional poderia se desenvolver, a partir da identificação e aplicação de atributos da moda brasileira em sua produção? Este estudo propõe identificar atributos identitários relativos ao Mito Fundador que compõe a moda brasileira e verificar a aplicação de tais atributos em empreendimento econômicos solidários do setor de confecção. Para isso, foram realizados estudos de fundamentação teórica sobre economia solidária no Brasil e sua atuação na indústria têxtil e de confecção e sobre a moda brasileira sob a ótica do Mito Fundador, cujos resultados propiciaram a elaboração de sistematizações necessárias à criação de categorias de análise, respectivamente, sobre os temas de Economia Solidária e atributos identitários relativos ao mito fundador que compõe a moda brasileira contemporânea. Os resultados obtidos nas etapas bibliográfica e estudo de campo revelam que os princípios fundamentais da economia solidária estão presentes e regem as ações e decisões de cada empreendimento, sobretudo a ética, o respeito ao meio ambiente e a valorização do trabalhador, porém, ressalta-se como desafio do trabalho solidário concentrar-se em nichos de mercado ainda iniciantes e sem investimentos governamentais. Nos empreendimentos de economia solidária, a elaboração de peças com técnicas artesanais é um potencial de identidade do fazer manual brasileiro que promove os conceitos de economia solidária na parceria do trabalho cooperado de artesãs. A pesquisa conclui ser recomendável a ampliação de parcerias entre empreendimentos de economia solidária, a divulgação organizada para a transmissão de seus principais valores aos consumidores, o investimento governamental em educação e capacitação de trabalhadores e o processo de produção orientado por projetos concebidos com atuação da área de Design de forma colaborativa / The study relates relevant and current themes: the solidarity economy and the textile and clothing industry inserted in the contemporary context of fashion. Solidarity economys proposals meet the social and environmental issues evidenced in recent years as a result of the revelations about the precariousness of labor and the exploitation of natural resources in the textile and clothing chain, and proposes a new form of economy aimed at the generation of income and work to the excluded population. On the other hand, it is relevant to observe the application of attributes related to the construction of the Brazilian fashion that refer to the elements of tropical and Edenic nature, considered in this research as references of the Founding Myth. How could a solidary economic enterprise operating in the Brazilian textile and clothing industry develop from the identification and application of attributes of Brazilian fashion in its production? This study proposes to identify attributes related to the Founding Myth that composes the Brazilian fashion and verify the application of such attributes in solidarity economic enterprises of the clothing manufacturing sector with the intention of presenting development perspectives of solidarity economy in the textile and clothing industry in the current context of national fashion, as sustainable means of growth of the domestic market and participation in the foreign market. The results obtained in the bibliographic and field studies show that the fundamental principles of solidarity economy are present and govern the actions and decisions of each enterprise, above all, ethics, respect for the environment and the valorization of the worker, however, we emphasize the challenge of this work to be restricted to beginning niche markets and lacking government investments. In the solidarity economy enterprises, the elaboration of garments with artisan techniques is a potential of the Brazilian manual making that promotes the concepts of solidarity economy in the cooperative work of artisans. The research concludes that it is advisable the expansion of partnerships between solidarity economy enterprises, the organized dissemination for the transmission of its main values to consumers, government investment in education and training of workers and the production process oriented by projects conceived in the Design area in a collaborative manner

In 1946 a rich gold reef was discovered on the farm Geduld in the vicinity of Odendaalsrus and approximately 3 miles (4, 8 km) from the town. At that stage it was recognised as the richest gold reef in the world. The discovery led to further and progressive explorations in the Goldfields and finally resulted in the coming of many people to settle in the area. As the mining sector developed, the need for certain infrastructure on socio-economic and the social precinct had deepened. The proceeding development of the mining sector had led to the establishment of Welkom, because Odendaalsrus could not comply with the expectations of mining magnates like Ernest Oppenheimer. Consequently, the establishment and layout of Welkom made provision for such requirements like infrastructure, etc. Likewise, with the surrounding mining industry of Anglo-American, Welkom had become the metropolis in the Goldfields. Thereby equal to the mining industry, secondary industry developed on an increasing scale in the Goldfields. Odendaalsrus played on the other hand an important role in the emergence and developing processes of the Dutch Reformed Churches, since the Volksraad of the O.F.S. gave distinct consent on the 26 April 1899 for the layout of the town on the farm of Kalkkuil. Inclusively, the founding and development of the Reformed Churches in South Africa (Gereformeerde Kerke in Suid-Afrika), also started with their church activities during the early years of the gold discovery near Odendaalsrus. None the less, the Reformed Church of South Africa (Ned. Hervormde Kerk van Suid-Afrika) also had been founded and church activities escalated during the same time in the Goldfields, and more specifically in St. Helena, a well-known established suburb of Welkom. In the same way, it is necessary to emphasise the Evangelical Reformed Church of South Africa (Evangelies-Gereformeerde Kerk van Suid-Afrika) which founded on May 1960 in Welkom, although the members of the church were active with church activities in Welkom long before their congregation was finally established. The culminating factor of the economic power regarding the mining industry may not be overlooked in its influence on the emergence of the various church congregations in the Goldfields. The constant influx of mineworkers to the Goldfields made the existence of the church inevitable for its member’s spiritual well-being. Naturally, the church had to overcome major obstacles, namely: the expansion to new residential areas, the availability of finances, planning schemes for church amenities, the purchase of church estates, the need of ministers, knowledgeable church councillors and general encompassing assistance, etc. Furthermore, the church encountered during the pioneering years all sorts of social disorders, while the minister at times had the working load of approximately two congregations to handle at the same time. Accordingly, it was virtually impossible for the minister to cope with such a strenuous working load effectively, and consequently some issues were at times inevitably neglected in the congregation. The demands of the time and difficult circumstances without proper roads, communication networks like direct telephone systems, the lack of church buildings, manses, the long distances between the central point of worship and some visiting areas within the confinements of the congregation had necessarily complicated the task of the minister. Nevertheless, the church continued and gave concrete stature to its calling by virtue of the founding congregations for meaningful and efficacious spiritual care to its members. Herein, the church was successful because the focus of faith remained on God. Previous issue date: 2009 / Resumo: O desenvolvimento de microestruturas otimizadas durante o processo de solidificação são de fundamental importância nas propriedades e desempenho de produtos acabados baseados em ligas metálicas. Neste estudo é analisada a cinética envolvida no processo de solidificação, seus efeitos nos parâmetros macro e microestruturais e a sua conseqüente influência nas propriedades mecânicas. Com esse intuito, ligas hipoeutéticas do sistema binário são estudadas Al-Ni por meio de experimentos de solidificação vertical ascendente sob regime transitório de condução de calor. Os espaçamentos dendríticos primários (?1) e secundários(?2) foram medidos ao longo de todos os lingotes para cada uma das ligas analisadas e correlacionados com as variáveis térmicas de solidificação. Uma abordagem teórico-experimental é utilizada na determinação quantitativa de tais variáveis térmicas: coeficiente de transferência de calor na interface metal/molde, velocidade de deslocamento da isoterma liquidus, gradientes térmicos, taxa de resfriamento e tempo local de solidificação. Os dados experimentais referentes à solidificação das ligas são confrontados com os principais modelos teóricos de crescimento dendrítico da literatura. Este estudo aborda, também, a influência do teor de soluto nos espaçamentos dendríticos para as ligas estudadas. Do ponto de vista macroestrutural, verifica-se que a transição colunar/equiaxial (TCE) ocorre para ligas hipoeutéticas Al-Ni para uma taxa crítica de resfriamento de 0,16 K/s. Por ensaios de tração as propriedades mecânicas das ligas do sistema Al-Ni são correlacionadas com parâmetros da micro-estrutura dendrítica resultante do processo de solidificação. Verifica-se que os limites de escoamento e de resistência à tração crescem com o aumento da concentração de soluto e decrescem com o aumento dos espaçamentos dendríticos, ?1 e ?2. O alongamento específico, por outro lado, mostra-se independente da composição e do arranjo dendrítico. Para a liga Al-5%Ni foi também realizado um estudo de solidificação rápida por refusão da superfície a laser para análise das variações microestruturais e de dureza entre as áreas não tratadas e tratadas superficialmente. / Abstract: The development of optimized microstructures during the solidification stage of processing is of fundamental importance to the mechanical properties and to the performance of finished products of metallic alloys. In this study the kinetics of solidification and its effects on macro and microstructural parameters, as well as the consequent influence on the final mechanical properties are analyzed. Hypoeutectic Al-Ni alloys are studied by upward unidirectional solidification experiments under transient heat flow conditions. Primary (?1) and secondary (?2) dendrite arm spacings are measured along the castings for all alloys analyzed and correlated with transient solidification thermal variables. A combined theoretical/ experimental approach is used to quantitatively determine such thermal variables, i.e., transient metal/mold heat transfer coefficients, tip growth rates, thermal gradients, tip cooling rates and local solidification time. The experimental data concerning the Al-Ni alloys solidification are compared to the main predictive dendritic models from the literature and the dependence of dendrite arm spacing on the alloy solute content is also analyzed. From the macrostructural point of view, it is found that the CET occurs for a critical value of cooling rate of about 0.16 K/s for hypoeutectic Al-Ni alloys.With a view to correlate mechanical properties to dendrite arm spacings, tensile testings were carried out. It is found that the ultimate tensile strength and the yield strength increase with increasing alloy solute content and with decreasing primary and secondary dendrite arm spacings. In contrast, the elongation is found to be independent of both alloy composition and dendritic arrangement. For the Al 5%Ni alloy a rapid solidification study is carried out by using laser surface remelting in order to permit microstructural and microhardness variations throughout the resulting treated and untreated zones, to be analysed. / Doutorado / Materiais e Processos de Fabricação / Doutor em Engenharia Mecânica

The problem of this study was to determine how much foundry equipment exists in the high schools of Texas and to determine to what extent it is being utilized. The data for this study were provided by thirty-seven metalworking instructors of Texas high schools.
Of the Texas high schools offering metalworking as a part of the industrial arts curriculum, few appear to have adequate foundry facilities. In addition, a deficiency seems evident in the background and training in foundry of the metalworking instructors.
