Mechanisms for Kink Band Evolution in Polymer Matrix Composites: A Digital Image Correlation and Finite Element StudyJanuary 2016 (has links)
abstract: Polymer matrix composites (PMCs) are attractive structural materials due to their high stiffness to low weight ratio. However, unidirectional PMCs have low shear strength and failure can occur along kink bands that develop on compression due to plastic microbuckling that carry strains large enough to induce nonlinear matrix deformation. Reviewing the literature, a large fraction of the existing work is for uniaxial compression, and the effects of stress gradients, such as those present during bending, have not been as well explored, and these effects are bound to make difference in terms of kink band nucleation and growth. Furthermore, reports on experimental measurements of strain fields leading to and developing inside these bands in the presence of stress gradients are also scarce and need to be addressed to gain a full understanding of their behavior when UDCs are used under bending and other spatially complex stress states.
In a light to bridge the aforementioned gaps, the primary focus of this work is to understand mechanisms for kink band evolution under an influence of stress-gradients induced during bending. Digital image correlation (DIC) is used to measure strains inside and around the kink bands during 3-point bending of samples with 0°/90° stacking made of Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene Fibers. Measurements indicate bands nucleate at the compression side and propagate into the sample carrying a mixture of large shear and normal strains (~33%), while also decreasing its bending stiffness. Failure was produced by a combination of plastic microbuckling and axial splitting. The microstructure of the kink bands was studied and used in a microstructurally explicit finite element model (FEM) to analyze stresses and strains at ply level in the samples during kink band evolution, using cohesive zone elements to represent the interfaces between plies. Cohesive element properties were deduced by a combination of delamination, fracture and three-point bending tests used to calibrate the FEMs. Modeling results show that the band morphology is sensitive to the shear and opening properties of the interfaces between the plies. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Mechanical Engineering 2016

As is distributed in different chemical forms in aquatic systems. These different forms control its behaviour and fate in the environment. The humic substances (HS) have an important role in the As cycle since they can complex this metalloid and change its mobility and bioavailability. Fe is also important because it can form ternary complexes HS-Fe-As. Although the As chemistry is well studied, the behaviour of As in HS and Fe-rich environments is not totally known. This thesis aimed to investigate the distribution of As, Al and Fe in surface waters from a mining region in the southeast of Brazil (Quadrilátero Ferrífero, QF) and understand how characteristics of HS extracted from different regions (Brazil and Germany) affect the complexation of As(V) in the presence of Fe(III). Water samples were taken in 12 points in QF, filtered (0.45 µm) and ultrafiltered (1 kDa) to separate the fractions particulate (>0.45 µm), colloidal (<0.45 µm and >1 kDa) and free (<1 kDa) of As, Al and Fe. The technique of diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) was used in 5 of the 12 points to study the labile fraction of the elements studied. Total organic carbon (TOC) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) were also measured. HS were extracted from four points (one in Brazil in dry and rainy seasons and three in Germany) to analyse the influence of HS from different origins and Fe(III) on the complexation of As(V). The HS were characterised and complexation experiments were performed using an ultrafiltration system with 1 kDa membrane. All data were analysed using the Kohonen neural network. The results showed that most of total Al and Fe in QF was in the particulate fraction and As was in the free fraction. Most of the dissolved Al and Fe was in the colloidal and inert fraction, while As was more labile and potentially more bioavailable. Most samples had similar behaviour in the dry and rainy seasons in the QF. Differences between results of ultrafiltration and DGT were attributed to methodological distinctions and chemical processes. The results of characterisation of extracts showed that most of As and Fe was in the fractions of higher molecular size. All HS extracts complexed similar amounts of As(V), except Selke, where a lower amount of free As(V) was detected (more complexed). This difference was attributed to S and N-aromatic C groups in HS structure. It supports that the quality of HS is an important factor able to influence the behaviour of As in environments rich in organic matter and Fe. The Kohonen neural network was an important tool in the investigation of the distribution of As and As(V) complexation by Fe(III) and HS. / FAPESP: 2012/17727-8

This thesis presents application-driven temperature-aware solutions for next generation video coding systems, such as the High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC). Different from state-of-the-art works, the proposed solutions raise the abstraction of temperature management to the application-level, where video coding characteristics and video content properties are used to leverage thermal-aware solutions for video coding with low QoS (Quality of Service) degradation. Several video coding and temperature analyses are performed to understand the behavior of temperature when encoding different video sequences. Based on the analyses results, different approaches are proposed to mitigate the temperature effects on video coding systems. Application-driven temperature management for HEVC uses run-time encoder configuration selection to keep temperature under safe operational state while providing good visual quality results. Temperature optimization using approximate computing uses content-driven approximations to reduce the on-chip temperature of HEVC encoding. Application-driven temperature-aware scheduler leverages application-specific knowledge to guide a scheduling technique targeting reducing the spatial temperature gradients that are resulted from the unbalance workload nature of multi-threaded video coding application. The proposed solutions are able to provide up to 10 °C of chip temperature reduction with negligible compression efficiency loss. Besides, when compared with previous works the resulted objective video quality (PSNR) is from 12 dB up to 20 dB higher. Moreover, the proposed scheduler eliminates spatial temperature gradients greater than 5 ºC of multi-core architectures. As conclusion, this thesis demonstrates that leveraging application-specific knowledge and video content properties has a significant potential to improve temperature profiles of video coding systems while still keeping good quality results.

Descrição analítica da magnetização induzida pela metodologia GMAX / Analytical description of the magnetization induced by the GMAX sequenceJoão Teles de Carvalho Neto 04 April 2003 (has links)
The Gradient-Modulated Adiabatic Excitation (GMAX) methodology is characterized by the use of adiabatic pulses for volume localization in spectroscopy and slice selection in MRI. Its use derives from the interesting nodal point transverse magnetization profile induced throughout the sample. Nevertheless, the interpretation of such behavior for the magnetization has been of qualitative purpose only, using the adiabatic condition as a starting point. Here, we present an analytical description, starting from the solution in terms of the hypergeometric functions for sech and tanh pulses. From this procedure we found a set of results with which is possible to infer analytically the characteristic behavior of the magnetization. This is on the purpose of obtaining greater control of the magnetization from parameters of the methodology that carry physical interpretation.

This work presents an adaptation of conventional finite element method (FEM) computing procedures to multicomputers. It is presented the procedure which the linear system of equations is split among the processor and its solution. It was improved a public software called PIM (Parallel Iterative Method) is used to solve this system of equations. These improvements explore efficiently the usual features of the FEM systems of equations: sparseness and symmetry. To improve the solution of the system, two different preconditioners are used: a generic Incomplete Cholesky (IC) and the Polynomial preconditioning (POLY(0) or Jacobi). It is carried out a full adaptation of the method to parallel computing with a program developed to analyse floor structures. The improved PIM is also used to solve the system of equations of a tri-dimensional truss. It is presented the speed-up, the efficiency and the time used in the resolution of the systems of equations for the floor and for the truss. It is also presented a study of performance in sequential processing of the generic (IC) and the generic Neumann series preconditioners in the analysis of plates in bending and in plane actions.

Microbial life on an antarctic volcano: prokaryotic diversity and adaptation in Deception Island.Amanda Gonçalves Bendia 06 February 2017 (has links)
Active volcanoes in Antarctica contrast with the predominately icy landscape. They harbor unique conditions capable to select an extreme range of microbial adaptations. Deception Island is located in the Antarctic Peninsula region and differs from other Antarctic volcanoes specially by its higher temperatures and marine influence. We collected sediment samples associated to active fumaroles and glaciers on two geothermal sites of Deception Island, with temperatures ranging from 0°C to 98°C. Different cultivation-indepedent techniques were used to understand how microbial communities respond to extreme environmental variations produced by volcanic activity. The results indicate that co-occurrence of hyperthermophiles and their specific adaptations with metabolically diverse cold-adapted micro-organisms represents a unique community structure for antarctic ecosystems. This study provided primordial data on central questions about microbial diversity and adaptation to polar geothermal environments.

Monjolinho, Cruzeiro, Pião, Viajantes e Três Arcos), estando as demais
The montane vegetation harbors great plant diversity due to the

studies in such vegetation. The Parque Estadual do Ibitipoca (PEIB),

cliffs, in altitudes between 1000 and around 1800 m that presents,
interspersed to field vegetation, fragments of cloud forest and dwarfforest,
being the latter divided in four physiognomies. These forest
formations stand out for retaining moisture from the fog allowing high
abundance of epiphytic individuals. In order to know the composition
and structure of the community of vascular epiphytes in such
formations were used specimens collected in the Park along more
than 40 years deposited in herbaria, besides new expeditions
conducted between July 2014 and July 2015 for observation,
photographic record, and collection of the plants, which were
deposited in the herbarium CESJ of Universidade Federal de Juiz de
Fora. Results are presented in two chapters. The first chapter
presents the checklist of vascular epiphytes in the cloud forests of
PEIB, composed by 223 species distributed in 81 genera, being
Pleurothallis s.l. R.Br. the richest (13 spp.), and 22 families, of which
Orchidaceae is the richest (86 spp.), corresponding to 28% of the
vascular flora of this formation. Both the absolute number of species
and the epiphytic quotient represent one of the largest diversities ever
found in such studies in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, which is of
great relevance if taking in account that the studied physiognomy
represents less than 300 ha or around 20% of the total area of PEIB
(around 1488 ha). This relevance is reinforced by the presence of 13
and 23 species threatened with extinction respectively in national and
state levels in distinct categories. The second chapter presents the
results of evaluation of the community of vascular epiphytes along the
elevation and environmental gradients, represented by three of four
subphysiognomies of dwar-forest. For this purpose were established
24 plots of 10 x 20 m, divided in eight sets each composed by riverine
dwarf-forest with humiferous shallow soil, slope dwarf-forest with
sandy deep soil, and slope dwarf-forest with sandy shallow soil. The
establishment of the sets was based on the caves whose surrounding
vegetation comprises the first aforementioned formation at different
altitudes (Ponte de Pedra, Coelhos, Bromélias, Monjolinho, Cruzeiro,
Pião, Viajantes e Três Arcos), being the other formations nearest as
possible and with the most similar elevation possible. All phorophytes
with diameter at breast height larger than 10 cm were analyzed in
each plot. In order to evaluate the influence of luminosity on the
ix
occurrence of epiphytes, photographs of the canopy were taken, to
estimate the cover percentage using the software CanopyDigi. The
community structure was analyzed through calculation of absolute
and relative frequencies, diversity index of Shannon (H’), uniformity
index of Pielou (J), and taxonomic diversity indices [average taxonomic
distinctness (K+) and variation in taxonomic distinctness (M+)], for each
subdivision of the dwarf-forest and for the community as a whole. It
were sampled 568 phorophytes (the richest having 29 species),
resulting in 3771 occurrences of epiphytes, distributed in 146 species,
of which 20 were accidental. Orchidaceae is the richest of the 22
families found, with 53 species (36%) and, together with
Polypodiaceae (19 spp.), and Bromeliaceae (16 spp.), have 60% of the
total. There was no correlation between the canopy cover and the
observed richness of epiphytes (r = 0.26, p = 0.23). The values of H’
and J for the community were respectively 3.97 and 0.82. The
diversity was different between the physiognomies of dwarf-forest and
along the elevation gradient, being greater with enhancement of the
elevation. The value of K+ to Gruta dos Coelhos was lower than
expected, and represents a potential impact caused by the massive
visitation of tourists, resulting in collection of ornamental plants or
environmental degradation, once this is the cave of easiest access in
PEIB. The obtained results highlight the diversity of this region and
the important contribution of the epiphytes, as well as its sensibility
to the different vegetation physiognomies and the climatic variations
caused by the elevation, which conducted to an atypical diversity
gradient, besides the importance of taking in account the anthropic
impact, even in a conservation unity.
