<p>The project was conducted on a small-scale catchment at Goedertrou in the Riebeek- Kasteel district. The focus of this study was to address some of the hydrological processes active in the research catchment, namely infiltration, run-off and sediment mobilisation on different soil types. It was done to investigate the origin of Berg River pollutants. To answer the overall question about what influence the natural salt load of the Berg River, a number of subprojects have been identified, one of which is to understand the hydrological processes in the soil mantle and vadose zone. Hence, the study aimed to answer the research questions mentioned and discussed in section 1.3 of Chapter 1. Considering the results, it could be suggested that decayed root systems from the rows of plants, soil cracks, small channels and openings created by small animals, as well as slope orientation and, therefore, soil composition, all played a major role in influencing the ability of the soil to absorb the simulated rainfall. In this study, the factors that influenced run-off are micro topography, soil moisture, root system, animal activities in soil profile, soil crack dimensions and the hydraulic conductivity. The main factors that played a major role to influence sediments mobilisation are strongly believed to be the micro topography within the ring, slope gradient and length, vegetation cover and rainfall-simulation intensity. After using different techniques, the results show that farmers must be aware that with storm rainfall, particles smaller than 65 &mu / m are subject to mobilisation. It is important to let land-users know that they need proper and appropriate methods for land-use.</p>

MOX dopé chrome : optimisation du dopage et de l’atmosphère de frittage / Cr2O3-doped MOX fuel : doping and sintering atmosphere optimizationThomas, Régis 17 July 2013 (has links)
Dans un contexte d’accroissement des marges de sûreté des réacteurs de générations II et III vis-à-vis des scénarios accidentels, des efforts importants de recherche sont consacrés à l’amélioration de la microstructure du combustible MOX à l’issue de son procédé de fabrication. Les deux caractéristiques microstructurales recherchées sont l’accroissement de l’homogénéité de répartition du plutonium et l’augmentation de la taille de grain. Dans cette optique, une solution envisagée est l’ajout lors du procédé de fabrication et sans modification de celui-ci, de sesquioxyde de chrome Cr2O3. Une précédente thèse sur le sujet a permis de proposer un modèle d’homogénéisation de la répartition du plutonium suite à l’ajout de Cr2O3. L’auteur a souligné l’importance de la formation du précipité PuCrO3 aux joints de grains lorsque la solubilité du chrome dans la matrice (U,Pu)O2 est atteinte. Cependant, les mécanismes d’action du chrome n’ont été étudiés que pour une atmosphère de frittage unique. Plusieurs points restent également à approfondir, notamment la solubilité du chrome et les conditions optimales de formation du précipité PuCrO3. Dans un premier temps, une étude de la spéciation du chrome solubilisé et précipité dans l’oxyde mixte (U,Pu)O2 a été réalisée. Les techniques ayant permis d’analyser directement le chrome sont la microsonde électronique et la spectroscopie d’absorption des rayons X. Il a été montré que le degré d’oxydation et l’environnement du chrome solubilisé sont indépendants de la pression partielle d’oxygène imposée lors du frittage et de la teneur en plutonium de l’oxyde mixte. La nature des précipités et la solubilité du chrome dépendent, quant à eux, de la variable thermodynamique et de la teneur en Pu. Sur la base de ces résultats, un modèle de solubilité du chrome dans l’oxyde mixte (U,Pu)O2-x a été construit. Ce modèle a été réalisé en fonction de la teneur en plutonium y de la solution solide (U1-yPuy)O2-x (y = 0,11 ; 0,275 et 1) et sur la gamme de potentiel d’oxygène d’intérêt pour le frittage du combustible (-445 kJ.mol -1< µO2 < -360 kJ.mol -1). Outre l’optimisation du dopage, ce modèle permet de définir les conditions optimales de formation du précipité PuCrO3 en fonction de la teneur en plutonium et de l’atmosphère de frittage. Dans un second temps, nous avons regardé si les conditions d’obtention du précipité PuCrO3 correspondaient à un accroissement de l’homogénéité de répartition du plutonium et une taille de grains maximale. Pour ce faire, des échantillons fabriqués avec ou sans présence de chrome et frittés sous différentes atmosphères ont été étudiés. Il a été mis en évidence que la cinétique d’interdiffusion U-Pu est complètement modifiée en présence de chrome. De plus, suite à l’ajout de chrome, les conditions permettant d’accroître la cinétique d’interdiffusion U-Pu ne sont pas forcément associées à une taille de grain maximale.A partir de ces résultats, des préconisations pour la mise en œuvre industrielle sont proposées. Elles concernent le choix de l’atmosphère de frittage et la teneur en chrome nécessaire à l’optimisation de la microstructure. / Optimal use of the Mixed Oxide (U,Pu)O2 nuclear fuel in pressurized water reactors is mainly limited by the behavior of gaseous fission produced during irradiation. Within the MOX microstructure, the probability of fission gas release is increased by the presence of rich localized plutonium areas exhibiting a higher local burn-up. A solution consists in optimizing plutonium distribution within the industrial product and promoting the crystalline growth of the fuel grains. For this purpose, addition of chromium sesquioxide during the manufacturing process is currently considered. A previous thesis has shown that the best results are obtained for a Cr addition slightly greater than the solubility limit of Cr in (U,Pu)O2. In order to explain the enhanced plutonium homogeneity, the author highlighted the formation of PuCrO3 precipitates at grain boundaries. A sintering model under reducing atmosphere, with chromium addition, was proposed. However, several points have to be more thoroughly investigated, especially regarding the solubility limit of chromium, as well as the optimal conditions of PuCrO3 precipitates formation. In a first part, speciation of solubilized and precipitated chromium in the mixed oxide (U,Pu)O2 is studied using electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). It was shown that the oxidation state and the environment of soluble chromium within the (U,Pu)O2 matrix do not depend on the oxygen partial pressure during sintering, neither on the plutonium content of the mixed oxide. However, both chemical nature of the precipitates and chromium solubility depend on the thermodynamic variable and on the plutonium content.Based on these results, a chromium solubility model in the mixed oxide (U,Pu)O2-x was built using the law of mass action governing solubility equilibrium. This model is described as a function of the plutonium content (y) of the solid solution (U1-yPuy)O2-x (y = 0,11 ; 0,275 et 1) and in the oxygen potential range of interest for MOX fuel sintering (-445 kJ/mol < µO2 < -360 kJ/mol). This thermodynamic model contributes to the optimization of the doping stage of fabrication and defines the optimal conditions of PuCrO3 precipitates formation.The aim of the second part is to verify if the thermodynamic conditions of PuCrO3 formation correspond to an optimal plutonium distribution and grain growth of the mixed oxide. Samples manufactured with and without Cr2O3 addition and sintered under various atmospheres were analyzed. It was shown that the U-Pu interdiffusion kinetics is completely modified with chromium addition. Morover, with chromium addition, sintering conditions which increase the U-Pu interdiffusion kinetics, don’t necessarily correspond to optimal grain growth. Based on these results, recommendations for the industrial manufacturing process are proposed. They deal with the choice of the sintering atmosphere and doping concentration to obtain an optimized microstructure.

total em canais aluviais e propor uma função de resistência total. A partir da equação
fundamental da resistência da superfície, é definida uma função cuja variação pode ser
associada aos efeitos da forma do leito e da distribuição granulométrica de sedimentos. A
forma desta função, obtida através de análise dimensional utilizando a técnica de regressão linear múltipla, é apresentada para sedimentos unimodais e bimodais associada a cada tipo de canal e mistura de sedimentos. Foi utilizada uma grande massa de dados experimentais de laboratório e de campo coletados por diversos pesquisadores em vários estudos. Com base nos diversos estudos encontrados na bibliografia e considerando as incertezas envolvidas na separação da resistência total em, a resistência devido aos grãos na superfície e das formas do leito, decidiu-se propor uma função de resistência separadamente para cada forma do leito para o parâmetro de resistência B. A grande vantagem da metodologia proposta é que esta avalia a resistência total do leito sem a necessidade de separação dos efeitos dos grãos e das formas do leito. Os resultados mostram que uma excelente relação funcional pode ser estabelecida para cada forma do leito e mistura de sedimentos utilizando três e dois parâmetros adimensionais. O efeito da distribuição granulométrica dos sedimentos ficou evidenciado no caso do leito plano e com sedimentos bimodais, indicando que nos casos em que a distribuição natural – log-normal – de sedimentos não seja aplicável, o efeito da distribuição granulométrica é significativo na resistência total do canal aluvial. / The present work has the objective of evaluating the variation of the hydraulic
resistance in alluvial channels and propose a function of total resistance. Starting from the
fundamental concept of the resistance of the surface, a function is defined in which the
variation of resistance can be associated with the characteristics of the bed form and the grain size distribution of the mixture of the sediments in the bed. The form of this function,
obtained through dimensional analysis using the technique of multiple linear regression, is
presented for unimodal and bimodal sediments associated with each channel type and mixture of sediments. Utilizing the data collected by various researchers in laboratory canals and rivers, the functional relationships for the resistance factor, here in identified as a dimensionless factor “B”, has been established utilizing three, or in a simple form, two,
dimensionless parameters as independent variables. The great advantage of the resistance function proposed here is that it eliminates the need to separate the total resistance into two components. The results show that an excellent functional relationship can be established for each bed form and mixture of sediments using three parameters. The influence of the grain size distribution of the sediments was evidenced in the case of all the bed forms and especially bimodal sediments. In the cases of natural distribution (log-normal) of sediments in the sand range, the effect on the individual grain size distributions became hardly noticeable.

Materiais com este tipo de estrutura são utilizados para diversas aplicações, tais como, sensores, atuadores, em células a combustível de óxido sólido, entre outros. Devido as suas interessantes propriedades físicas, o SrTiO3 vem sendo intensamente estudado, em especial com a introdução de dopantes. Portanto, neste trabalho foi investigada a influência de diferentes teores de Ca (1; 2,5 e 5% mol) e Pr (0,025; 0,050; 0,075 e 1% mol) na microestrutura e propriedades elétricas e dielétricas do SrTiO3, assim como o material sem aditivos (puro). Os resultados mostram que após a sinterização do SrTiO3 puro, a microestrutura consiste de grãos poligonais com tamanho médio micrométrico, além de texturas lisas e rugosas. A condutividade elétrica das amostras sintetizadas sinterizadas a 1450 e 1500ºC é máxima para 2 horas de patamar. Apenas as amostras de SrTiO3 contendo 1% em mol de Ca apresentam fase única. O tamanho médio de grãos das amostras contendo 1% em mol de Ca é 10,65 ± 0,28 µm e para teores acima deste valor ocorre crescimento significativo dos grãos. As medidas de condutividade elétrica mostraram que as amostras contendo a adição de 1% em mol de Ca possuem maior condutividade dos grãos em relação ao material puro. Para as amostras contendo teores de até 0,075% mol de Pr, pode-se observar alguns grãos lisos e outros rugosos e não há variação considerável do tamanho médio de grãos. As amostras contendo menor teor de Pr (0,025% mol) apresentam maior condutividade dos grãos e contornos de grãos. Efeito do refino do tamanho de grão pela adição de Hf nas propriedades mecânicas de tração e impacto do aço Hadfield. / Hadffield steel, refinement of austenitic grain size, tensile and impact properties, EBSD analysis, twinning deformation.Bianka Nani Venturelli 12 March 2018 (has links)
Este trabalho consiste no estudo das propriedades mecânicas de tração e impacto do aço Hadfield refinado com Hf em relação ao aço Hadfield sem refino. Foram realizadas simulações no software Thermo-Calc para caracterizar o caminho de solidificação e a evolução microestrutural do aço Hadfield (composição química de 13% de Mn, 1,2% de C e 0,65% de Si). Foram fundidos os corpos de prova de aço Hadfield sem refino e refinado pela adição de Hf, ambos com a composição química de acordo com a norma ASTM A128 - grau B2. Os corpos de prova foram submetidos ao tratamento térmico de solubilização à temperatura de 1120oC por 10 horas. A caracterização macroestrutural mostrou que o aço Hadfield com adição de Hf apresenta tamanho do grão austenítico cinco vezes menor (600 µm) do que o aço Hadfield sem refino (de 3000 µm para 600 µm), sendo que este resultado foi confirmado pela técnica de EBSD (Electron backscatter diffraction). Os resultados do ensaio de tração dos corpos de prova para as duas condições mostraram que as propriedades de limite de escoamento (6%), tenacidade (88%), resistência à tração (37%), e do coeficiente de encruamento (30%) do aço Hadfield refinado aumentaram em relação ao aço Hadfield sem refino. A energia absorvida no impacto aumentou de 156 J/cm2 para 179 J/cm2 com o refino do tamanho de grão austenítico. A lei de Hall-Petch foi utilizada para explicar o efeito do refino de grão no limite de escoamento, mas não pode ser usada para explicar o aumento na resistência a tração, tenacidade, e as mudanças no coeficiente de encruamento. A caracterização microestrutural das amostras rompidas em tração e impacto mostrou que a fração de maclas aumentou em 46% (em tração) e 45% (no impacto) para o aço Hadfield refinado em comparação com o aço Hadfield sem refino. Os resultados da caracterização microestrutural dos corpos de prova rompidos no ensaio de tração e impacto indicam que o mecanismo de deformação plástica por maclação foi mais atuante com o refino do grão austenítico. / The tensile and impact properties of Hf-refined Hadfield steel were compared to the properties of non-refined Hadfield steel. Simulations in Thermo-Calc software were made in order to study the solidification and microstructural evolution of a Hadfield steel (13% Mn, 1.2% C and 0.65% Si). Samples of non-refined and refined Hadfield steel (with addition of 0.1% of H), both with chemical composition as described in ASTM A128- grade B2, were cast and subjected to a solution heat treatment at 1100oC for 10 hours, followed by water quenching. Macrostructural characterization showed that the refined Hadfield steel featured an austenitic grain size equal to 600 ?m, five times smaller than the grain size of the non-refined Hadfield steel (3000 µm). These results were confirmed by EBSD (Electron backscatter diffraction) analysis. The tensile test results showed an increase in the values of the yield stress (6%), the fracture toughness (88%), the tensile strength (37%) and the strain hardening coefficient (30%) with the reduction on the austenitic grain size from 3000 µm to 600 µm. Additionally, the value of the absorbed energy of the impact test was improved from 156 J/cm2 to 179J/cm2 with reduction on the grain size. The Hall-Petch law was used to explain the small increase of 8% in the value of the yield stress with the grain refinement, but this law could not be used to explain the increase in the values of the fracture toughness, the tensile strength and the strain hardening coefficient. The microstructural characterization of the fractured test-pieces after tensile and impact testing showed that the values of the fraction of mechanical twins (definer) in the plastically deformed microstructure near the fracture surfaces of the refined condition increased by 45% when compared to the non-refined condition. These results indicated that the austenitic grain refinement of the Hadfield steel changed the plastic deformation mechanism, favoring the activation of the plastic deformation by twinning mechanism and, therefore, increasing the values of the fracture toughness (~88%), the ultimate tensile strength (~30%), the strain-hardening coefficient (~30%) and the absorbed energy during Charpy-test (~15%).

Etude de l'influence des procédés de fabrication sur les propriétés mécaniques des alliages de nickel / Study of effect of welding on mechanical behavior on nickel alloysBlaizot, Jérôme 25 March 2016 (has links)
Dans l’industrie nucléaire, différents composants des réacteurs à eau pressurisée sont soudés par le procédé TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas). Pour obtenir une résistance à la corrosion et une tenue en service suffisante, ces pièces sont réalisées en alliage base nickel NY690. La compréhension des phénomènes physiques impliqués durant le soudage est nécessaire afin de connaître l’évolution de la microstructure et leur influence sur le comportement mécanique. Pour améliorer la qualité des produits soudés, il est crucial de déterminer les contraintes résiduelles après soudage ce qui implique de connaître le comportement mécanique de l’alliage NY690. En effet, le soudage de ces pièces massives dont l’épaisseur est comprise entre 50 et 250 mm nécessite un grand nombre de passes et donc grand nombre de cycles thermo-mécaniques. Pour reproduire ces chargements complexes se produisant dans la zone affectée thermiquement, des essais mécaniques ont été réalisés en utilisant la machine Gleeble 3500 et une machine de traction/torsion MTS-809. Des essais de traction et des essais cycliques ont été réalisés pour différents états microstructuraux à température ambiante et à 750°C. Plus précisément, l’influence de la taille de grain et de la présence des carbures de chrome sur le comportement mécanique a été étudiée dans le but de déterminer les paramètres à prendre en compte pour modéliser le comportement mécanique. Le comportement mécanique en chargement monotone a ensuite été modélisé en fonction de la température et de la vitesse de déformation en utilisant le formalisme de Kocks-Mecking-Estrin. Ce modèle ensuite été implémenté sous Sysweld pour simuler des expériences de soudage. / Mechanical behavior of nickel alloy 690 (NY690) is characterized from 25°C to 1100°C and for a strain rate ranging from 10-4 to 5×10-3s-1. The effects of chromium carbides and grain size (50-150 µm) on the tensile properties of NY690, were studied at 25°C and 750°C. Chromium carbides have negligible influence on the yield stress and on the strain hardening whereas the grain size slightly decreases the yield stress and the hardening rate at room temperature. The grain size has little influence on the strain-hardening but increases the steady-state stress. The dislocation density is the major microstructural parameter governing the mechanical behavior of the alloy for the studied experimental conditions. The Kocks-Mecking-Estrin formalism is adapted to a wide range of temperature and strain rate to predict the mechanical behavior.

L’analyse de sédiments totaux et de fractions granulométriques de la rivière Gandak (Himalaya) a montré que la variabilité des séries de l’uranium observée pour les sédiments himalayens est contrôlée par leur évolution minéralogique et granulométrique plutôt que par le mécanisme d’altération. Cette conclusion questionne les travaux antérieurs et souligne la nécessité d’étudier la mobilité des radionucléides à échelle minérale. A cette fin, une approche sur fractions minérales a mis en évidence des processus d’échange entre les minéraux, avec une mobilité significative de 230Th, fortement appauvri dans les zircons, et 226Ra, enrichis en particulier dans la fraction argileuse. Les déséquilibres observés semblent induits par un processus d’altération récent, de quelque ka.Ces résultats sont confirmés par l’analyse des déséquilibres 238U-234U-230Th dans des minéraux par SIMS, qui montre un enrichissement en 230Th à la surface des monazites et une perte de Th (232, 230) dans les zircons. / The analysis of total sediments and grain-size fractions from the Gandak river (Himalaya) showed that the Uranium series variability observed for the Himalayan sediments is controlled by their mineralogical and grain-size evolution, rather than by the weathering process.This conclusion called into question the transfer timescale in Himalayan plains estimated by previous works and highlighted the need to explore radionuclide mobility at the mineral scale. For this purpose, an approach on pure mineral fractions pointed out exchange processes between the mineral phases, with a significant mobility of 230Th, strongly depleted in zircon, and 226Ra, particularly enriched in the clay fraction. The observed disequilibria are attributed to a recent weathering process of a few ky. Those observations are confirmed by the SIMS analysis of 238U-234U-230Th disequilibria on mineral grains, which show a 230Th enrichment at the grain surface in monazites and a loss of Th, 230 and 232, in zircons.

L’étude des dépôts de tsunamis est une science relativement jeune, et si de nombreux progrès ont été faits, en particulier au cours des trois dernières décennies, les techniques disponibles à l’heure actuelle ne permettent pas l’étude exhaustive des dépôts, que ce soit à cause de problèmes de conservation, fréquemment rencontrés, ou de limites liées aux techniques analytiques elles-mêmes. En effet, leur résolution spatiale s’avère insuffisante pour les dépôts fins (fractions sableuses et inférieures), soit par leur principe même (absence de visualisation en trois dimensions sur des lames minces, par exemple), soit à cause des techniques d’échantillonnage dont elles dépendent. Ce travail a permis d’explorer les applications d’une technique analytique jusqu’à présent inutilisée dans ce domaine, la microtomographie par rayons X, appliquée à trois dépôts de tsunamis : les dépôts du tsunami de Lisbonne en 1755 sur les côtes Andalouses, ceux d’un tsunami causé en 1996 dans le Lac Karymskoye au Kamchatka, et un potentiel dépôt de tsunami datant de l’Holocène à Ninety Mile Beach, sur le littoral ouest de l’Australie. Les problématiques liées aux techniques d’échantillonnage et au traitement des données brutes et à leur exploitation sont passées en revue et les solutions retenues sont exposées. Les résultats obtenus sont comparés à ceux obtenus par l’utilisation de techniques analytiques dont la pertinence et l’utilité ont été démontrées lors de précédentes études. Cette technique se révèle extrêmement utile pour les analyses structurales (organisation interne des dépôts), texturales (distributions de tailles de grains, fabrique sédimentaire et dynamiques d’écoulements), ainsi que les analyses de composition (abondances en bioclastes et en minéraux lourds par exemple). Le croisement des études structurales et texturales du dépôt du tsunami de 1755 mettent en avant des dynamiques de mise en place allant parfois à l’encontre des scenarii généralement admis et offre un nouveau point de vue sur les dépôts de tsunami. / The study of tsunami deposits is a relatively young science, and even if substantial progress has been made (especially during the last three decades) the techniques available at present day do not allow exhaustive studies of the deposits, weither poor conservation of the deposits, which is a common problem, is to blame, or because of limitations of the techniques themselves. Their spatial resolution often appears to be insufficient for fine deposits (sand size fractions and finer) because of their working principle (lack of three dimensional visualisation of structures on thin sections for instance) or because of the sampling techniques they depend on. This work allowed exploring the applications of an analytic technique, X-ray computed microtomography, which had to this day never used before for the study of tsunami deposits. Three distinct case studies have been made: deposits from the 1755 Lisbon tsunami on the western coast of Spain (Andalusia), deposits from the 1996 tsunami triggered in Karymskoye Lake, and a potential mid-Holocene tsunami deposit at Ninety Mile Beach, western Australia. Problematic linked to sampling techniques and raw data processing and exploitation are addressed. Chosen solutions are exposed. The results are compared to those obtained using techniques whose relevance and usefulness have been proven in previous studies. This technique proves to be extremely useful for structural (deposits inner organisation), textural (grain size distribution, sedimentary fabrics and flow dynamics), and composition (bioclasts and heavy minerals abundances) analyses. Crossing structural and textural analysis of the 1755 Lisbon tsunami deposit unravels deposition modes which go against the usually admitted scenario and offers a new point of view on tsunami deposits.

Statisches und zyklisches Verformungsverhalten fein- und ultrafeinkörniger Werkstoffzustände eines metastabilen austenitischen StahlsDroste, Matthias 08 December 2020 (has links)
Ein metastabiler austenitischer Stahl der Zusammensetzung 16Cr-7Mn-6Ni wurde einerseits über die Methode der Rückumwandlung in Werkstoffzustände verschiedener Korngrößen überführt und andererseits additiv über das Electron Beam Melting (EBM)-Verfahren gefertigt. Das statische und das zyklische Verformungsverhalten werden stark von der Korngröße beeinflusst. Insbesondere der ultrafeinkörnige Zustand verzeichnete einen erheblichen Anstieg der Festigkeit bei gleichzeitig hoher Duktilität. Die Lebensdauer übertraf bei niedrigen Dehnungsamplituden die Lebensdauer der Vergleichszustände und lag - für ultrafeinkörnige Gefüge außergewöhnlich - selbst bei hohen zyklischen Beanspruchungen auf einem vergleichbaren Niveau. Im Gegensatz zur Korngröße hatten die prozessinhärenten Defekte der mittels EBM hergestellten Varianten kaum einen Effekt auf das Verformungsverhalten des Stahls. Auch die Absenkung der Lebensdauer fiel vergleichsweise gering aus. Diese hervorragende Schadenstoleranz wird der hohen Duktilität in Kombination mit der enormen Verfestigungskapazität zugeschrieben.
