The role of corporate social responsibility in sustainable development in Ghana : a critical perspective on Anglogold Ashanti Ghana

Nyamadi, Victoria Mensah 02 1900 (has links)
The aim of this research was to identify and assess the extent to which AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) Mining Company has been able to apply its corporate social responsibility (CSR) policies in its operations, in a participatory manner, in contributing to sustainable development in its area of operation. The mixed method approach was used. Cluster sampling under the random sampling and purposive sampling methods were used to select both the respondentsand communities affected by mining. Six communities were surveyed from the Obuasi Municipality in the Ashanti region of Ghana. Participatory interviews, questionnaires, focus group discussions and participant observation techniques were used to gather data. The study identified that the CSR initiatives of AGA are evaluated on five main principles, namely commitment to core values, compliance with legal provisions, managerial discretion in taking actions, economic contributions and participatory mechanisms. The study found that, to some extent, the local people have been engaged in the implementation of AGA’s CSR activities. 25.2% were involved in project planning and design, and more than 80% were informed before the start of projects. Also, the results reveal that AGA’s mining activities have had both positive and negative impacts on the economic well-being of residents within the selected communities. The impact of AGA’s mining activities on the environment, especially on water quality, soil quality, sanitation and noise levels, was found to be negative, resulting in major health problems for residents in mining communities. As a contribution to knowledge, the study shows how community members (respondents) perceive AGA’s CSR activities as fulfilling just one aspect of CSR (philanthropic dimension) and not necessarily rectifying the effect of their mining activities on the environment (ethical dimension). The study therefore recommends that comprehensive CSR measures principled through the lens of nonphilanthropic considerations be developed to reverse the general negative outcomes of mining on communities economically, socially and environmentally, especially regarding the growing unemployment and displacement of communities. / Inhloso yalolu cwaningo kwakuwukuhlonza nokuhlola ukuthi iNkampani yeMayini iAngloGold Ashanti (AGA) ikwaze kanjani ukusebenzisa izinqubomgomo zayo zegunya lokubambisana kwezenhlalo (GLK) ekusebenzeni kwayo, ngendlela yokubamba iqhaza, ekunikelweni entuthukweni esimeme emkhakheni esebenza kuyo. How to let go : Different ways to detect and release tensions

Kurki, Saara January 2021 (has links)
The aim of my project was to find different ways to make playing easier and freer. What does it actually mean to let go and what could help to achieve more secure and relaxed feeling in your body when playing your instrument? I collected and experimented with exercises from a book The Inner Game of Music and Alexander Technique. I found out that knowing more precisely what to focus on and being more aware of the body can have a great effect. I discovered more gentle ways to teach myself and learned about the importance of how we are treating and using our bodies during practicing and in everyday situations. /
The sounding part consists of the following recording; Esa-Pekka Salonen: Pentatonic Étude. The recording has been archived.

Deep Learning with Go

Derek Leigh Stinson (8812109) 08 May 2020 (has links)
Current research in deep learning is primarily focused on using Python as a support language. Go, an emerging language, that has many benefits including native support for concurrency has seen a rise in adoption over the past few years. However, this language is not widely used to develop learning models due to the lack of supporting libraries and frameworks for model development. In this thesis, the use of Go for the development of neural network models in general and convolution neural networks is explored. The proposed study is based on a Go-CUDA implementation of neural network models called GoCuNets. This implementation is then compared to a Go-CPU deep learning implementation that takes advantage of Go's built in concurrency called ConvNetGo. A comparison of these two implementations shows a significant performance gain when using GoCuNets compared to ConvNetGo.
“I want to do things and see places, not get stuck at home and be lonely.” : Traveling with older people on public transport in Stockholm

Osbeck, Siri January 2022 (has links)
Mobility is an essential part of older people’s quality of life and the opportunity to maintain their inclusion in society. Accessing public transport is inextricably linked to older people’s ability to live an independent life and engage in various activities. The global population is aging, and more people live in cities, which creates challenges for transport planning to provide a transport system for everyone that also encourages sustainable mobility. This thesis investigates older peoples’ experiences traveling by public transport in Stockholm and how their experiences relate to social sustainability. Drawing on material collected through go-along interviews, this thesis examines the bodily and emotional dimensions of traveling and the meanings and values they ascribe to being mobile with public transport. The research illustrates the importance of understanding older peoples’ public transportation experiences in situ by traveling with the participants.

Holistic View on Alternative Programming languages for Radio Access Network Applications in Cloud and Embedded Deployments / En helhetsvy över alternativa programmeringsspråk för RadioAccess Network-applikationer i moln- och inbyggda system

Karlbäck, Rasmus, Orö, Anton January 2021 (has links)
With the emergence of cloud based solutions, companies such as Ericsson AB have started investigating different means of modernizing current implementations of software systems. With many new programming languages emerging such as Rust and Go, investigating the suitability of these languages compared to C++ can be seen as a part of this modernization process. There are many important aspects to consider when investigating the suitability of new programming languages, and this thesis makes an attempt at considering most of them. Therefore both performance which is a common metric as well as development efficiency which is a less common metric, were combined to provide a holistic view. Performance was defined as CPU usage, maximum memory usage, processing time per sequence and latency at runtime, which was measured on both x86 and ARM based hardware. Development efficiency was defined as the combination of the productivity metric, the maintainability index metric and the cognitive complexity metric. Combining these two metrics resulted in two general guidelines: if the application is constantly under change and performance is not critical, Go should be the language of choice. If instead performance is critical C++ should be the language of choice. Overall, when choosing a suitable programming language, one needs to weigh development efficiency against performance to make a decision.

On the Optimal Linkage of Social Security Benefits to Payroll Taxes

Gahvari, Firouz, Beach, Randy 01 March 2016 (has links)
This paper employs a three period overlapping generations' model to investigate (i) the labor supply effects of the linkage between the benefits of a pay-as-you-go social security program and the payroll taxes that finance them and (ii) the nature of the optimal linkage. The main result of the paper is that, for a given statuary tax rate, the weights that must be placed on earnings of different periods (in benefit calculation) depend on population and productivity growth rates only. This result implies that the optimal net tax rates are not uniform over the life cycle unless the economy is on its steady state golden rule path. Moreover, if the economy is on the golden rule path, the optimal net tax rates are not only uniform but also zero. The paper also demonstrates that, if preferences are additively separable, as more weight is placed on earnings when young labor supply by the young increases while labor supply by the middle-aged decreases.

Surfplatta & Widgit Go som kommunikationsstöd för elever med utvecklingsstörning i gymnasiesärskola. En kvalitativ studie om användningen av surfplatta & Widgit Go utifrån personalens perspektiv

Fakhro, Nesrein January 2019 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to investigate experiences of staff at a high school for students with disabilities, about how digital aids such as tablet and Widgit Go, enable communication for students with intellectual disabilities, and how the staff in the school work with these digital aids to enable students to communicate and interact with others. To be able to analyze the empirical data in the study, a qualitative method has been applied, with the help of semi-structured interviews. The result shows that the participants in this study feel that the tablet and Widgit go application provides opportunities for increased communication and interaction for these students if the tools are used in the right way. The students can communicate and interact with each other by modulating the tablet for each other and displaying things to each other on their tablets. The professional skills of digital technology have a significant role for the students development of their language, as they need to teach and support the students in the use of digital tools. Only one participant was found to have education and extensive experience with tablet and Widgit Go.
