Ecology of the bushpig Potamochoerus porcus Linn. 1758 in the Cape Province, South Africa

Seydack, Armin H. W. 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (PhD) -- Stellenbosch University, 1990. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT:Bushpig sociology, energetics, reproduction and population dynamics were studied over an 8-year period in the Cape Province, South Africa. The social organization was found to be strikingly different from that known from other suid species. The basic social unit is a unimaternal family group, occupying a resource-based territority, with a monogamous mating system. This form of social organisation is related to the dispersed nature of food resources, to which it provides exclusive access. It is reminiscent of canid social systems. Agonistic behaviour, communication and maternal behaviour were studied as the opportunity arose. The average home range size was 7,2 kmª, ranging from 3,8 to 10.1 kmª. Home ranges were often traversed within 1-4 days, as part of territory patrolling. The average diel ranging distance was 3 km. Bushpig were active during both night and day and exhibited a basic bimodal rhythm. The main phase of intensive foraging occurred from before dusk to midnight, with a secondary activity peak after dawn. Activity schedules were geared to avoid extreme ambient temperatures. Temperature regulation and water use were investigated, with particular reference to thermoregulatory behaviour (nest building). pelage characteristics, body core temperature dynamics, thermoneutral zones and resting metabolic rates. The thermoneutral zone for 10 kg bushpig juveniles was estimated to lie between 13° and 30°C and that for adults between 8° and 25°C. Foraging behaviour, diet and its nutritient content were investigated. Regional differences in the nutritional quality of bushpig diets in the Eastern and Southern Cape were associated with the predominance of nutrient-rich and nutrient-poor substrates respectively. These in turn were reflected by divergent life history features in the populations from the two regions. Patterns of growth and energy storage were described and the value of various parameters (e.g. mass to size ratio, fat depositions, blood composition) to evaluate condition was investigated. In studying reproductive biology, sexual maturation, female reproductive cycles, prenatal litter statistics, foetal development, 1actation, breeding seasonality and reproductive turnover were the main aspects addressed. The role of food quality, body condition and social status in determining reproductive success was discussed. Bushpig population density estimates in the Southern Cape ranged between 0,3 and 0,5 animals/kmª• The dynamics of Southern and Eastern Cape populations were found to differ. The differences are consistent with the hypothesis that social organisation is determined by the distribution and availability of food while diet quality shapes life history tactics. A life history model was developed which links edaphoclimatic environmental conditions with diet quality, metabolic turnover rate and, ultimately, life history features. In the concluding chapter some of the managerial implications of the research findings are discussed. Soedoende is temperatuuruiterstes vermy.

Výchova k vlastenectví v českých školách / Education for patriotism in Czech schools

Kyzlinková, Marcela January 2015 (has links)
The key aim of this work is a method of patriotic education in our schools, mainly in the first grade of primary schools. The point of this work is to awaken patriotism in society again. In the first step we are informed about the important ideas that enable to develope the assumptions neccesary for the patriotic recognition and for an increase in patriotic feeling. The theory pays the attention to morality, influencing behaviour; for example, material and physical values and the aesthetic. It describes each historical term individually, from the beginning of national recovery during the first half of 19th century to the present days. It underlines the need to understand correctly the individual ideas and it points out the general chaos and risks of their interpretations in society. It recognises the important tasks that our society has to face to maintain the education of patriotism succesfully. The practical aspect contains the class discussions, interwiews and analysis of individual pupils, teachers, directors and it compares the level and quality of class debats with teacher`s attitude. The main thing was to find out the teachers' personal feeling about patriotism, his or her attitude towards its education and the way he or she communicates this during the lessons.

Regards sur les inscriptions funéraires : pratiques, mémoires, identités entre Loire et Pyrénées, IVe- VIIIe siècles : contribution à l’étude du phénomène épigraphique en Aquitaine Seconde et Novempopulanie / Views on the funerary inscriptions : practices, memories, identities between Loire and Pyrénées (IVth-VIIth c.) : contribution to the study of the epigraphic phenomenon in Aquitaine Seconde and Novempopulanie

Uberti, Morgane 08 November 2014 (has links)
The epitaph carries values of identity and memories. The regions under study, the Aquitaine Seconde and the Novempopulanie between the IVth and VIIIth c., are a perfect playground to discuss the transformation, crisis and construction of identities. Romanitas, the emergence to christianism as well Frankish and Wisigothic migrations also play important parts in this context. The underlying question is to determine to what extent funerary inscriptions can be relevant to this debate, if they reveal, or not, these changes. Our epigraphic documents do not necessarily refer to evental history nor do they evoke clearly the christianisation of territory. However the approximate dating of these sources, their scattering and their terseness, encourage us to go beyond the script itself and rather to consider its usage. In other words, the aim is to evaluate identities which are passed and their remembrance value to understand what are the factors that have fostered the choice of the epitaph by a part of the society of the south west Gallia. Prior to assuming informative and commemorative roles, the epitaph is firstly a cultural and social practice, probably motivated by habits. This perspective calls for a different approach of the epitaph, which focuses on the environment, culture and practices that produce it. This work, based on a corpus of the inscriptions of Aquitaine Seconde and Novempopulanie, defend a global vision of the epigraphic object, since its creation to its reception by different audiences. This perception being on both historical and archeological point of views, animated by a common theme: the choice and the uses of the epitaph between Loire and Pyrenees from the IVth and VIIIth c.

Chang, Chih Heng Unknown Date (has links)
The purpose of this study is to examine the clinical validity of the Health, Personality, and Habit Test (HPH). The HPH was developed by Dr. Yung-Ho Ko in 1995, and has been widely used in clinical settings. The HPH has demonstrated appropriate reliability and validity, but little research has been done on its differential and construct validity in the clinical settings. Therefore, the aim of this study is to explore the HPH’s ability to differentiate between disorders and its construct validity in clinical context. This research reviewed the developments of similar tests, such as MMPI, KMHQ, and MCMI, and examined validity of the HPH with the same methods. Subjects were 257 patients who suffered from common disorders in clinical settings, including schizophrenia, major depression, dysthymia, and anxiety disorders. ANCOVA was first used to explore whether different disorders have an effect on category A, B, and D scales after controlling demographic and clinical variables. Next, logistic regression was used to clarify which scales and combinations can differentiate between two of four disorders. Finally, exploratory factor analysis was conducted to examine the structure of HPH in clinical setting. The results of ANCOVA showed that the differences of schizophrenia scale (A1), manic scale (A2), depression/suicide scales (A3, B4, & A4), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) scale (B5), and psychological function and health scales (D1, D3, D4, D5, D6) were partly consistent with assumptions, supporting the differential validity of HPH. The results of logistic regression analysis also supported the validity of A1, A3, B4, and B5 scales. More specifically, A1 was able to differentiate schizophrenia from any other three disorders, A3 was able to differentiate MDD from schizophrenia and anxiety disorders, B4 was able to differentiate dysthymia from schizophrenia, and B5 was able to differentiate OCD from other disorders. However, none of the scales was able to differentiate MDD from dysthymia, nor were they able to differentiate dysthymia from anxiety disorders. Moreover, each of the logistic regression functions showed moderate to high correlations, and most of them achieved high overall hit rates (above 70%), providing support for the clinical differential validity of the HPH. As for construct validity, these factors in category A and D scales were essentially similar to original scales. Similarly, factors in category B scales were compatible to original scales though difference was found. In sum, these results lent support to the construct validity of the HPH in the clinical settings. However, refining of the scales is needed and suggestions are discussed. Finally, the practical uses of the findings were also discussed.

Stability of sodium sulfate dicarbonate (~2Na₂CO₃• Na₂SO₄) crystals

Bayuadri, Cosmas 23 May 2006 (has links)
Research on salts species formed by evaporation of aqueous solution of Na2 in the early 1930s. The thermodynamic, crystallographic and many other physical and chemical properties of most of the species formed from this solution has been known for decades. However, there was no complete information or reliable data to confirm the existence of a unique double salt that is rich in sodium carbonate, up until five years ago when a research identified the double salt (~2Na ₂ CO ₃ • Na ₂ SO ₄) from the ternary system Na₂CO ₃Na₂SO ₄ H₂O. Crystallization of this double salt so called sodium sulfate dicarbonate (~2Na ₂ CO ₃ • Na ₂ SO ₄) is known to be a primary contributor to fouling heat transfer equipment in spent-liquor concentrators used in the pulp and paper industry. Therefore, understanding the conditions leading to formation of this double salt is crucial to the elimination or reduction of an industrial scaling problem. In this work, double salts were generated in a batch crystallizer at close to industrial process conditions. X-ray diffraction, calorimetry, and microscopic observation were used to investigate the stability of the salts to in-process aging, isolation and storage, and exposure to high temperature. The results show that care must be taken during sampling on evaporative crystallization. Two apparent crystal habits were detected in the formation of sodium sulfate dicarbonate; the favored habit may be determined by calcium ion impurities in the system. The results also verify that sodium sulfate dicarbonate exists as a unique phase in this system and that remains stable at process conditions of 115-200℃

Malinconia, degenerazione e abitudine in Herman Melville, Joseph Conrad e Samuel Beckett. Tre figure di rifiuto del lavoro

BELLINI, FEDERICO ALBERTO 12 March 2013 (has links)
"The Nigger of the 'Narcissus'" di Joseph Conrad appare invece quale un modo di affrontare degenerazione e decadenza. / This study concerns the literary representations of the refusal of work in the works of Herman Melville, Joseph Conrad, and Samuel Beckett. In the introduction I deal with the definition of refusal of work as a literary theme and with the methodological issues of the chosen approach to the topic. In order to situate the analysis of the main theme in a broader context, each of the following three chapters focuses on one of the authors in relation to a sub-theme: melancholia, degeneration, and habit, respectively. The refusal of work in Herman Melville, and particularly in Bartleby, emerges as a reaction against melancholy and Romanticism. I read Joseph Conrad's The Nigger of the "Narcissus" as a way of approaching a theory of degeneration and decadence. Finally, I identify the centrality of habit to Samuel Beckett's oeuvre: an examination of the sources and evolution of this theme in his oeuvre, provides a more nuanced understanding of his aesthetic project. My final chapter addresses how these very different aesthetic trajectories function as different facets, or stages, of the same phenomenon, and as manifestations of very similar creative processes.

Variational models in martensitic phase transformations with applications to steels

Muehlemann, Anton January 2016 (has links)
This thesis concerns the mathematical modelling of phase transformations with a special emphasis on martensitic phase transformations and their application to the modelling of steels. In Chapter 1, we develop a framework that determines the optimal transformation strain between any two Bravais lattices and use it to give a rigorous proof of a conjecture by E.C. Bain in 1924 on the optimality of the so-called Bain strain. In Chapter 2, we review the Ball-James model and related concepts. We present some simplification of existing results. In Chapter 3, we pose a conjecture for the explicit form of the quasiconvex hull of the three tetragonal wells, known as the three-well problem. We present a new approach to finding inner and outer bounds. In Chapter 4, we focus on highly compatible, so called self-accommodating, martensitic structures and present new results on their fine properties such as estimates on their minimum complexity and bounds on the relative proportion of each martensitic variant in them. In Chapter 5, we investigate the contrary situation when self-accommodating microstructures do not exist. We determine, whether in this situation, it is still energetically favourable to nucleate martensite within austenite. By constructing different types of inclusions, we find that the optimal shape of an inclusion is flat and thin which is in agreement with experimental observation. In Chapter 6, we introduce a mechanism that identifies transformation strains with orientation relationships. This mechanism allows us to develop a simpler, strain-based approach to phase transformation models in steels. One novelty of this approach is the derivation of an explicit dependence of the orientation relationships on the ratio of tetragonality of the product phase. In Chapter 7, we establish a correspondence between common phenomenological models for steels and the Ball-James model. This correspondence is then used to develop a new theory for the (5 5 7) lath transformation in low-carbon steels. Compared to existing theories, this new approach requires a significantly smaller number of input parameters. Furthermore, it predicts a microstructure morphology which differs from what is conventionally believed.

Tomášova etika ctností z pohledu filosofie a psychologie / Thomas ethics of virtutis from the philosophical, theological and psychological point of wiev

KILBERGR, Pavel January 2016 (has links)
The first part deals with the concept of virtue ethics in the view of Summa theologica. Its basis is acquired from classical philosophy of ancient scholars. Firstly, it is necessary to describe Plato's and Aristoteles systematical approach to virtues. Plato's approach is parallel with the concept of the state. Aristotle's has a system divided into rational and moral virtues, which is a small entanglement of this topic. The last systematical approach in ancient times takes Stoic's way with dualistic conception of realty and human inside, which is an approach with no ground. Thomas Aquinas continues the system of Plato's and Aristotle's and adds the theory of cardinal and supernatural virtues. The cardinal virtues are rooted in humans, through their habits, so the key question then being human's habits, disposition, and adequacy in connection with their nature. Subsequently, the virtues are an essential part of human nature or personality. The psychology deals with the topic of virtues in the context of personality psychology, especially, in the background of inner quality or traits. Recently, virtues in the psychology are still open to question and are a huge challenge.

Vtělenost ve vztahu k novým technologiím / Vtělenost ve vztahu k novým technologiím

Gutierrez, Ivan January 2018 (has links)
This dissertation is an empirically responsive philosophical exploration into the incorporation of technological tools within a framework comprising the structures of experience laid out in the early phenomenological tradition and an analysis of agency drawing from the analytical tradition. Technological tools have become so deeply integrated in our lives that they function like a part of us, transforming what we feel we can do and even who we are. Although new spaces of autonomous agency have been opened up, since the inner workings of technological tools can remain invisible, we risk diminishing our own capacities. Since we are fundamentally embedded in the world, we cannot understand ourselves without reference to the world and we cannot understand the world without reference to the way we are. The uniqueness involved in our use of technological tools grows out of a more primordial uniqueness that makes technological tool use possible and sets us apart from our closest evolutionary relatives. Several animals extend their physical influence on the environment by means of tools. We humans, however, use tools to extend our cognitive abilities as well. And since the computer is the most universal human tool, which can be put to sensorimotor and cognitive purposes alike, we take the computer to be...
