Etude de la cinétique de recristallisation au cours du laminage à chaud d’aciers inoxydables ferritiques stabilisés / Study of recrystallization kinetics of stabilized ferritic stainless steels during hot rolling

Jacquet, Grégoire 28 October 2013 (has links)
Stabilized ferritic stainless steels are as efficient as austenitic stainless steels in many areas and less expensive. However, they suffer from a lower formability (forming + roping defect). It is therefore necessary to optimize the final microstructures and textures of these products, which requires in particular a better understanding of the evolution of the material during hot rolling.Plane strain compression tests carried out on a Gleeble® machine, reproducing the deformation during hot rolling in the center of the material, permitted to perform single- and multi-pass rolling schedules. The effects of deformation, temperature, strain rate, initial grain size and chemical composition on dynamic (during a rolling pass) and post- dynamic (during an inter-pass time) evolutions were investigated.A hot rolling pass fragments the microstructure and creates crystallites by continuous dynamic recrystallization (CDRX). A part of these crystallites becomes nuclei for the post-dynamic recrystallization (PDRX) during inter-pass time. The latter is characterized by the simultaneous activation of new nuclei and growth of recrystallized grains, not only within strain-hardened zones but also at the expense of other grains already recrystallized. The coupling of an existing CDRX model with a PDRX model based on experimental results allows to simulate multi-pass hot rolling schedules and to reproduce the effects of most of the operating parameters.

Modeling Constitutive Behavior And Hot Rolling Of Steels

Phaniraj, M P 12 1900 (has links)
Constitutive behavior models for steels are typically semi-empirical, however recently neural network is also being used. Existing neural network models are highly complex with a large network structure i.e. the number of neurons and layers. Furthermore, the network structure is different for different grades of steel. In the present study a simple neural network structure, 3:4:1, is developed which models flow behavior better than other models available in literature. Using this neural network structure constitutive behavior of 8 steels: 4 carbon steels, V and V-Ti microalloyed steels, an austenitic stainless steel and a high speed steel could be modeled with reasonable accuracy. The stress-strain behavior for the vanadium microalloyed steel was obtained from hot compression tests carried out at 850-1150 C and 0.1-60 s-1. It is found that a better estimate of the constants in the semi-empirical model developed for this steel could be obtained by simultaneous nonlinear regression. A model that can predict the effect of chemical composition on the constitutive behavior would be industrially useful for e.g., in optimizing rolling schedules for new grades of steel. In the present study, a neural network model, 5:6:1, is developed which predicts the flow behavior for a range of carbon steels. It is found that the effect of manganese is best accounted for by taking Ceq=C+Mn/6 as one of the inputs of the network. Predictions from this model show that the effect of carbon on flow stress is nonlinear. The hot strip mill at Jindal Vijaynagar Steel Ltd., Toranagallu, Karnataka, India, was simulated for calculating the rolling loads, finish rolling temperature (FRT) and microstructure evolution. DEFORM-2d a commercial finite element package was used to simulate deformation and heat transfer in the rolling mill. The simulation was carried out for 18 strips of 2-4 mm thickness with compositions in the range and 0.025-0.139 %C. The rolling loads and FRT could be calculated within 15 % and 15 C respectively. Analysis based on the variation in the roll diameter, roll gap and the effect of roll flattening and temperature of the roll showed that an error of 6 % is inherent in the prediction of loads. Simulation results indicated that strain induced transformation to ferrite occurred in the finishing mill. The microstructure after rolling was validated against experimental data for ferrite microstructure and mechanical properties. The mechanical properties of steels with predominantly ferrite microstructures depend on the prior austenite grain size, strain retained before transformation and cooling rate on the run-out table. A parametric study based on experimental data available in literature showed that a variation in cooling rate by a factor of two on the run-out table gives rise to only a 20 MPa variation in the mechanical properties.

Contribution à la compréhension du couplage thermomécanique en laminage à chaud sur l’évolution des défauts de coulée / Contribution at the comprehension of thermomechanical coupling on the evolution of the casting defect during rolling

Chevalier, Damien 21 December 2016 (has links)
The initial product is a bloom from the continuous casting. The bloom contains inclusions which have different forms, sizes and distributions. The rolling reduces the diameter of the bar and acts on the material microstructure by fragmenting and dispersing the inclusions. The aim of the thesis work is to understand the behavior of the inclusions with the rolling thermo mechanical loading effects. The direct investigations on the rolling mill are not possible because of the size of the installations. To address this problem, the solution is to develop and validate a small scale characterization test reproducing the thermo mechanical loading of the rolled bar. To achieve this, the rolling mill is modeled. Only the solicitations which have a major role on the behavior of the defects are reproduced. An open-die forging test is designed, manufactured and implemented on the VULCAIN installation of the ENSAM. The artificial defects which have a similar malleability to the real defects are integrated into the sample. A parametric experimental campaign has been conducted on the different defects. The forged samples have been analyzed with non-destructive methods such as ultrasound, radiography and tomography. These analyses allowed to follow the behavior of the defects and to observe certain phenomena illustrated in the literature such as the emergence of a cavity on the defect-matrix interface.

Thermomechanical processing of eutectoid steels: strategies to improve the microstructure of the hot rolled strips

Caruso, Matteo 30 October 2013 (has links)
Eutectoid steel strips are designed for the production of parts for intensive use such as clutches, seat slides, and springs as they exhibit
excellent strength levels and wear resistance. These properties arise from the unique morphology of lamellar pearlite which can be considered
as a self-laminated nanoscale composite. However, a spheroidization annealing step is nowadays necessary to improve the cold forming properties before further cold rolling steps.
This thesis is aimed at improving the tensile ductility of the hot rolled products of eutectoid composition in order to eliminate the intermediate
annealing step. Two strategies are proposed.
The first is to transpose the concept of controlled rolling developed for HSLA to
eutectoid steels. Through a strict adjustment of the austenite processing and of the cooling strategy, it is possible to improve the ductility
of the final lamellar microstructure. The way the processing parameters influence the hot deformation of austenite, the eutectoid transformation and of the subsequent spheroidization annealing is deeply
investigated. It is found that refinement and pancaking of austenite
is beneficial as it reduces the pearlite block size improving the total
tensile elongation. Accelerated cooling is of paramount importance to
achieve fine Interlamellar spacing (ILS), which lead to high strength
levels and accelerate spheroidization during subsequent annealing.
The second approach involves intercritical or warm deformation. Warm processing of eutectoid steels is first explored by torsion testing
and then up-scaled to a pilot rolling-line. The interactions between thermomechanical parameters, rolling forces generated and microstructural
evolution are carefully scrutinized. During concurrent hot deformation, spheroidization of cementite takes place almost instantaneously
in both torsion and rolling. The restoration processes occurring in the ferrite matrix depends on the strain path and the strain rates. Low strain rates (0,1 s−1) and simple shear promotes the formation of a recrystallized-like HABs network of about 3μm in size.
Plane strain compression and high strain rates (10 s−1) leads to the formation of a typical recovered dislocation substructure (LABs) of 1μm in size. During annealing, no recrystallization occurs and the LABs substructure remains stable. This substructure influences drammatically the mechanical properties: the strength is very high and the work-hardening behavior is poor due to high recovery rate in the region close to the LABs. However, due to the presence of spheroidized
cementite particles the ductility of warm rolled eutectoid steels is higher than that of ultra fine grained low carbon steels.

Hot ductility of austenitic and duplex stainless steels under hot rolling conditions

Kömi, J. (Jukka) 09 November 2001 (has links)
Abstract The effects of restoration and certain elements, nitrogen, sulphur, calcium and Misch metal, on the hot ductility of austenitic, high-alloyed austenitic and duplex stainless steels have been investigated by means of hot rolling, hot tensile, hot bending and stress relaxation tests. The results of these different testing methods indicated that hot rolling experiments using stepped specimens is the most effective way to investigate the relationship between the softening and cracking phenomena under hot rolling conditions. For as-cast, high-alloyed and duplex stainless steels with a low impurity level, the cracking tendency was observed to increase with increasing pass strain and temperature, being minimal for the small strain of 0.1. No cracking occurred in these steels when rolled in the wrought condition. It could be concluded that the cracking problems are only exhibited by the cast structure with the hot ductility of even partially recrystallised steel being perfectly adequate. However, the recrystallisation kinetics of the high-alloyed austenitic stainless steels, determined by stress relaxation and double-pass rolling tests, were found to be so slow that only partial softening can be expected to occur between roughing passes under normal rolling conditions. In the duplex steel, the restoration is fairly fast so that complete softening can occur within typical interpass times in hot rolling, while certain changes in the phase structure take place as well. Sulphur was found to be an extremely harmful element in duplex stainless steel with regard to their hot ductility so that severe cracking can take place with sulphur content above 30 ppm. However, the effect of sulphur can be eliminated by reducing its content and by calcium or Misch metal treatments that significantly increase the number and decrease the average size of the inclusions. It seems that the desulphurisation capacity of an element is the most important property for assessing its usefulness in reducing the detrimental influence of sulphur. The hot ductility of type 316L stainless steel determined by tensile tests was found to be better for nitrogen content of 0.05 wt-% than 0.02%, while in double-hit tensile tests the hot ductility values were identical. The mechanism whereby nitrogen affects hot ductility remains unclear but a retarding effect on static recrystallisation was observed.

Korpala, Grzegorz 19 June 2017 (has links)

Struktura a vlastnosti hořčíkových slitin Mg-Ca-Zn / Structure and properties of magnesium alloys Mg-Ca-Zn

Hlavnička, Jiří January 2014 (has links)
This master’s thesis deals with design and preparation of a new biodegradable magnesium alloy based on Mg-Ca-Zn. Based on information from literature, the Mg-3Zn-2Ca alloy was designed. The base material was produced by gravity casting and the evaluation in the as-cast and heat treated state was performed. For preparation of the experimental material, following methods were designed: squeeze casting, hot rolling and the ECAP. During preparation by hot rolling, no optimal conditions were found and significant cracks occurred in both as-cast and heat treated material. In the case of experimental material, prepared by the ECAP method with back-pressure, better combination of stress-strain properties was observed. Also the squeeze casting method showed improvement; especially the amount of casting defects was eliminated. The evaluation of microstructure and mechanical properties was performed by the light and scanning electron microscopy, RTG phase analysis and the tensile and compression tests.

Petersson, Rickard, Nilsson, Rebecca January 2017 (has links)
The study has been conducted on a number of steel plates from different buildings of cultural and historical value. When old, cultural buildings are to be renovated, it must be done with as much knowledge as possible about the different parts of the building and the values that they represent. The problem that the study has aimed to solve has been an inadequate level of knowledge in regards to historical steel plates. Because of this, the study has been conducted to contribute with knowledge that could be used when old buildings are to be renovated. To achieve the purpose of contributing knowledge to guide renovations of culturally and historically valuable buildings, the goal of the study has been to analyze how the different plates have been made and what the results of those processes were. This has been carried out by conducting a metallography on all of the samples to analyze their microstructures and to gain an understanding of the materials. A chemical analysis has also been conducted on the contents of the materials by using optical emission spectroscopy. The results showed how big of a difference there was between different manufacturing methods and their consequences. By discovering the diversity of the properties of the plates the conclusion has been drawn that there is value in respecting the values of the older materials.By being conscious of how large the difference is between different types of steel sheets, better decisions can be made during choice of steel sheet, and it is more obvious how much history that is stored within the old plates.

FERRAMENTAS DE USINAGEM EM AÇO RÁPIDO AISI M2 OBTIDO POR CONFORMAÇÃO POR “SPRAY”. / MACHINING TOOLS IN AISI M2 HIGH-SPEED STEEL OBTAINED BY SPRAY FORMING PROCESS.

Jesus, Edilson Rosa Barbosa de 07 October 2004 (has links)
The aim of the present work was the obtention of AISI M2 high-speed steel by spray forming technique and the material evaluation when used as machining tool. The obtained material was hot rolled at 50% and 72% reduction ratios, and from which it was manufactured inserts for machining tests. The performance of inserts made of the spray formed material was compared to inserts obtained from conventional and powder metallurgy (MP) processed materials. The spray formed material was chemical, physical, mechanical and microstructural characterised. For further characterisation, the materials were submitted to machining tests for performance evaluation under real work condition. The results of material characterisation highlight the potential of the spray forming technique, in the obtention of materials with good characteristics and properties. Under the current processing, hot rolling and heat treatments condition, the analysis of the results of the machining tests revealed a very similar behaviour among the tested materials. Proceeding a criterious analysis of the machining results tests, it was verified that the performance presented by the powder metallurgy material (MP) was slight superior, followed by conventional obtained material (MConv), which presented a insignificant advantage over the spray formed and hot rolled (72% reduction ratio) material. The worst result was encountered for the spray forming and hot rolled (50% reduction ratio) material that presented the highest wear values.
