Bioarchaeological Analysis of Isolated Crania from the Elizabeth Site in the Lower Illinois River Valley

Jones, Daniel 09 May 2015 (has links)
This thesis explores the life history of six isolated skulls interred in Mound 3 of the Elizabeth site, a Middle Woodland site in the lower Illinois valley. This study employs analyses of osteological features, stable and radiogenic isotopes, and biodistance for a cross-section of the Mound 3 population (n=15), including the isolated crania. Isotopic results reveal significant variation in lead isotope ratios in enamel, and interpretively meaningful variation in strontium values. However, bone carbonate oxygen values are not significantly different. Carbon isotope values from bone carbonate revealed only sex-based dietary differences. Biodistance data indicate relatively genetic homogeneity at the site, although significant variation was present in two of the isolated crania. Ultimately, data indicate that two of the six isolated skulls likely originated from elsewhere in the valley, but that the population likely resided in the Elizabeth site vicinity in the decade preceding death, and were not outsiders.

Responsibilities of Department Chairpersons as Perceived by Exemplary High School Principals

Ritter, William E. 12 1900 (has links)
The problem of this study was to identify a means for improving the administration of curriculum and instruction by exploring the utilization of leadership personnel in addition to the principal. This study focused on the determination of the responsibilities that should be delegated chairpersons and the degree of autonomy that should be associated with each responsibility. Major implications were as follows. 1) Job descriptions should be developed for department chairpersons listing responsibilities and specifying guidelines within which department chairpersons should function. 2) Effective communication channels must exist between principals and department chairpersons and between department chairpersons and teachers to insure that department chairpersons perform their duties in accordance with the will of the principal. Teachers must understand the position of department chairperson for optimum use of the departmental organization. 3) Another implication is that department chairpersons should be provided in-service training to assist them with understanding and fulfilling their responsibilities . Additionally, evaluation procedures should be developed based on assigned responsibilities to provide a means of improving effectiveness. 4) A major implication is that by effectively utilizing department chairpersons, principals will experience some relief and assistance . This would allow principals to function more effectively in supervising the instructional program and accomplishing other administrative duties.

Salvador

No. of bitstreams: 1 6046.pdf: 2350666 bytes, checksum: aed9a60807abef9e46cdb0ad2d5f6de5 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2014-04-28 / Financiadora de Estudos e Projetos / This is the first and most complete study of parasitoid wasps fauna associated with endophagous herbivores reared from flower-heads of Asteracea. A total of 36 remnants of Cerrado were sampled around São Paulo states, Brazil. 15,372 specimens of 192 species of parasitoid wasps were reared from 74 species of family Asteraceae. The subfamilies Eulophidae (Chalcidoidea) and Braconidae (Ichneumonoidea) represented most than a half of parasitoid wasps species. In addition to presenting a rich fauna of parasitoids, this study also addresses ecological issues regarding the main determinants of the parasitoid species richness from Brazilian savannah. The availability of food resources has crucial role in determining the species richness of parasitoids. In the first chapter of this thesis, we verified the role of geographical distribution of plants on the accumulation of natural enemies of their endophagous herbivores. In the second chapter, we verified through a path analysis which was the effect of local richness and phylogenetic diversity of plant species and their herbivores endophagous of flower-heads on local parasitoid species richness. In the third chapter we tested through an analysis of randomization if the patterns of the proportions of species of three trophic levels were consistent or stochastic. We conclude that both plants and their associated herbivores play a key role in determining the species richness of parasitoids in the Cerrado biome and the principals determinants of parasitoid wasps species richness were geographical distribution of plants, plant and herbivore richness, and the phytophysiognomy where species live. Due copyrights, all chapters of this thesis can be found published online in Neotropical Entomology, Insect Conservation and Diversity and Biota Neotropica magazines.

Variability of intermittent headwater streams in boreal landscape : Influence of different discharge conditions / Variabilitet av periodiskt återkommande bäckar i ett borealt landskap : Betydelse av olika avrinningsnivåer

Nhim, Tum January 2012 (has links)
Dynamic expansions and contractions of stream networks can play an important role for hydrologic processes as they can connect different parts of the landscape to the stream channels. However, we know little about the temporal and spatial variations of stream networks during different flow and wetness conditions. This study focuses on the contraction and expansion of stream networks during different flow conditions in the boreal Krycklan catchment, located in Northern Sweden. The stream network and initiation points were extracted from a gridded digital elevation model (DEM) of 5-meter resolution, and then compared with the stream network initiation points (heads) observed during the spring flood (freshet) period in 2012. From the results of the study, it was clearly seen that the observed stream heads and the stream heads appearing in the stream network map extracted from DEM did not agree very well. 49% of the total observed stream heads (49) fell onto the low order stream branches and headwater streams derived from the DEM. Only few of them exactly matched the modeled stream heads. Moreover, the modeled stream network was much denser than the observed stream network, and so the simple raster based dynamic model developed could not well represent the dynamic stream network extension in the real system. Most headwater streams in the study catchment were man-made ditches, which were dug to drain water wetlands and to increase forest productivity. The majority of observed stream heads were formed by seepage from the saturated surrounding soils, while only a few of them were formed by saturation overland flow.  On the other hand, the dynamic stream network derived from the DEM suggested that the number of streams of lower order and their lengths was sensitive to change in streamflow, especially during the high flow episode.

The relationship between the talent mindset and organisational commitment of academic heads of departments

Viljoen, Shelley Ann January 2014 (has links)
The study aims to determine the relationship between the talent mindset (TM) and organisational commitment (OC) of academic heads of departments. There is a vast problem in the higher education sector with regards to retaining academic staff members. In order for higher education institutions to attract and more specifically retain academic talent, one needs to implement a sound talent management model. Before such a model can be implemented with success, the organisation first needs to have a positive talent mindset. The relationship between talent mindset and organisational commitment may provide a means to develop appropriate interventions or strategies in order to enhance the talent mindset by focusing on improving the organisational commitment and vice versa. Two instruments, namely the Talent Mindset Index (TMI) and Organisational Commitment Questionnaire (OCQ), were administered to a sample of 116 heads of departments at a leading university in South Africa, 53 completed questionnaires were obtained. The responses were analysed using correlation analysis and quantitative techniques. Results confirm that the presence of OC is associated with a positive TM. Therefore, the study provides evidence that there is a correlation between OC and the TM of academic heads of departments. Thus, if management utilises existing techniques to increase OC, this should lead to the enhancement of the heads of departments’ TM. The enhanced TM would equip them to implement a talent management model to attract and retain academic staff. / Dissertation MCom University of Pretoria, 2014 / Human Resource Management / unrestricted

Die onderwyskundige opleidingsverantwoordelikhede van die hoof en departementshoof aan sekondêre skole

Botha, Marta Mariana 23 July 2014 (has links)
M.Ed. (Education) / Learning can be described as an infinite action which also implies training. There is no limit. no end to it. It is a continual process. These actions of learning and training can be applied to the teaching profession. No university or teachers' training college can fully train the prospective teacher during the pre-service training period. There is always new knowledge to be mastered. Theoretical knowledge and institute and school practice may prepare the student for his future career, but there is no guarantee for success. Having mastered the required skills at one of the above mentioned institutions, they must be put to practice in a real school or class situation. This is done during the school practice component of in-service training and once the student has started his career. Many kinds of problems may then be experienced by the student or recently qualified teacher. There may be problems in connection with matters such as adaption, administration, teaching methods or discipline. With the necessary guidance these problems may successfully be overcome. The person who is in the best position to provide this guidance is the head of the department. He may then act as a tutor or a mentor. Even experienced teachers who have been teaching at the same school for some time, newly appointed but experienced teachers and teachers returning to the profession, may encounter similar problems and may need guidance or in-service training. The headmaster is responsible for initiating an in-service training programme at the school. The different heads of department are to assist him in this, especially as far as subject matters are concerned. The ability to provide in-service training, to gain knowledge, to learn something new, however, also implies training. The headmaster and the heads of department should, therefore, receive the necessary training and guidance to enable them to successfully execute an in-service training programme. This training can be best provided by a training institution, such as a university or college. There should be a close link between these institutions and the different schools; between pre-service and in-service training. These two components of training should be presented as a continual process. The purpose of this study is to investigate the responsibilities of the head of department under the guidance of the headmaster, as far as the in-service training of the teachers in his department is concerned. This will provide the teachers with the oppurtunity of gaining knowledge and obtaining the required didactical skills. The possibilities of pre-service training are investigated with, among others, reference to content and modi, the link between these two kinds of training and between schools and training institutions. Recommendations are made in connection with the implementation of in-service training of didactical skills and the responsibilities of the head of department as far as in-service training of students and teachers at secondary schools is concerned. It is evident that the head of department, together with the headmaster, can play a very important part in the in-service training of teachers.

Horns of dilemma : Department head and subject teacher : a case study of Heads of Department in a public secondary school, northern Namibia

Naundobe, Robert Natukondye January 2015 (has links)
The accountability and responsibilities of school leaders have intensified greatly over the past decades and school leadership has become a strong focus of research. Meanwhile, Bush (2003) asserts that “school leaders [experience] tensions between competing elements of leadership, management and administration” (p. 7). This study uses observations, questionnaires, interviews and document analysis to unpack the perceptions of four Heads of Department (HoDs), the principal, and eight teachers on the tensions inherent in balancing the responsibilities of department head and subject teacher for HoDs in public secondary school. The study goes beyond the mere task of influence in its attempts to unpack how the leadership and teaching practices of HoDs may, or may not, be in conflict with each other. Using distributed leadership as a theoretical framing and drawing in particular on the work of Spillane and colleagues (2001; 2004), the study examines the roles HoDs enact; the challenges HoDs encounter in enacting their responsibilities as department head and subject teacher; and the strategies HoDs employ to combat the emerging challenges. The study found that the roles of HoDs are extensive and stretch across the classroom, the department, the whole school and beyond. However, the majority of these roles are biased in favour of management systems and processes and opportunities for leadership are rare. The many and extensive management responsibilities of the HoDs limit both their classroom teaching as well as their agency as leaders. The weight of their management work thus restricts their leadership, resulting in an authorised form of distributed leadership (Grant, 2010). The data also revealed that HoDs struggle to balance the responsibilities of department head and subject teacher due to both inter-role and intra-sender conflict. However, the study also found that the HoDs strategically adopt a range of strategies to assist them in doing their work, these include: compensatory teaching; delegation; and planning and prioritizing.
