With the advent of new technologies are increasing forms of publication and access to scientific information in health. Clinical experiences of first-time registered Master's chiropractic students during their clinical practicumGanesh, Nivida January 2017 (has links)
Submitted in partial compliance with the requirements for the Master’s Degree in Technology: Chiropractic, Durban University of Technology, Durban, South Africa, 2017. / Background
The imperative of clinical education in chiropractic is to endow students with the clinical competencies and professional attributes necessary for independent practice. The clinical practicum exposes chiropractic students to the realities, demands and expectations of patient care through immersion into the clinical learning environment. Various authors emphasise the importance of obtaining a student’s perspective of their experiences within this environment as it is essential to curriculum development and improvement, delivery of quality clinical education, and student satisfaction with their standard of education. Interestingly, unlike in other health professions’ disciplines, the clinical experiences of chiropractic students who have commenced their clinical practicum have scarcely been described in international literature. This study is the first of its kind to record the clinical experiences of chiropractic students during their clinical practicum in South Africa.
Aim
The aim of this study was to explore and describe the clinical experiences of first-time registered Master’s chiropractic students during their clinical practicum component at the Durban University of Technology Chiropractic Day Clinic in 2016.
Method
A qualitative, exploratory, descriptive approach was utilised. A purposive sample of 15 first-time registered Master’s chiropractic students was interviewed. Their clinical experiences during the clinical practicum were obtained through semi-structured interviews. Seven key questions, each relating to a specific aspect of the clinical practicum, were used to stimulate discussion. The data were recorded electronically and thereafter transcribed. Thematic analysis was used to interpret the data.
Results
Four main themes were identified, viz. undergraduate education and pre-clinical preparation; experiences within the clinical learning environment; inter-personal relationships in a clinical learning environment, and appraisal of the clinical practicum. Participants reported that the undergraduate and pre-clinical preparatory phase needed to be more practically orientated in order to provide relevance and cohesion to clinical learning. Significant experiences in the clinical learning environment included personal and professional growth and development, perceptions of preparedness for independent practice, perceptions of patient responses to chiropractic care, administrative duties and clinic infrastructure. The interpersonal relationships that contributed to the overall clinical experience were between students and their clinical supervisors, and students and the administrative staff. The appraisal of the clinical practicum included highlights and positive aspects that shaped the attitudes, values and philosophies of students, as well as the challenges and obstacles they encountered within the clinical learning environment.
Conclusion
This is the first South African study to document the clinical experiences of first-time registered Master’s chiropractic students. These clinical experiences were based on a variety of organisational and curriculum-orientated factors, as well as interpersonal dynamics. While students acknowledged and appreciated the critical importance of clinical education, and valued the learning opportunities within the clinical setting, they also provided constructive feedback on matters needing improvement to enhance the overall clinical experience. The lack of exposure to patient care prior to the commencement of the clinical practicum negatively impacted the clinical experiences. It is recommended that the findings of this study be utilised by the key stakeholders within chiropractic education to enhance chiropractic clinical education in South Africa. / M

Previous issue date: 2008-12-18 / It is noticeable that pressure, tension and overwork are frequent in health professionals routine. The work related to the ward area demands deep attention and surveillance. Because of that, it is essential to have a specific look at the humanization directed at health professionals, considering that taking care of other human beings is the essence of their job. This study has
analyzed the psychic health levels, as well as the stress health professionals are submitted to, providing a debate about the humanization in 06 public hospitals (03 of them awarded by actions of humanization, and 03 not awarded)
in Rio Grande do Norte state, Brazil. A study with 126 active health professionals (doctors, nurses, psychologists, nutritionists and social workers)
in ward areas in their respective institutions was carried out. The thesis presented, with multi-disciplinary characteristic, counted on the support of statisticians (to calculate samples and data analysis), psychologists, social workers and administrators (linked to the human resources sector in each hospital). A cross-sectional study was performed, taking into consideration both
quantitative and qualitative factors. The tools used for that were a semistructured questionnaire with socio-demographic characteristics, work and humanization; Lipp's Stress Symptoms Inventory for Adults (ISSL), and the
Goldberg s General Health Questionnaire (QSG). The workers are predominantly women (84,9%), married (54,8%), between 46 and 55 years old (40,5%), working in the same institution for more than 20 years (22,2%), and between 16 and 20 years (20,6%), respectively. They work 40 hours a week (71,4%) and have multiple jobs (61,9%). Although most of these individuals global psychic health is in a good level, there are a significant number of people that is gradually getting worse concerning psychic stress (F1) showed by QSG (54,7%), and stress showed by ISSL(42,1%). Observing the categories, nurses (41,5%). Nutritionists (20,8%), doctors and social workers (18,9%), were among
the most affected. About general health (F6), 63% of the awarded hospitals and 70% of the not awarded ones, presented good health levels (ranging from 5 to 50%). It was also noticed that, in the groups mentioned above, 25 and 20% respectively, were inserted in scores between 55 to 90%, what means that they are in worsening phase. The fact that the hospital is awarded or well recognized
doesn t interfere in health professionals stress level and in their psychic health. Through what was heard from these individuals, it was possible to verify that
they know little about humanization, once few of them identify or know that the service they offer is in an adoption process by Ministerial Policies. It was also
detected the necessity of developing actions aimed at worker s health. Such results showed the importance of have more investments in programs that are directed to workers well-being, because they deal with other people s health and it is known that it is difficult for them to offer high-quality assistance if there are not suitable physical, psychological and material conditions to help them develop their jobs. As a warning, it is fair to say that investments in actions that provide humanized care to health professionals, mainly concerning preventive

Violência de gênero contra mulheres profissionais de enfermagem de um hospital geral do município de São Paulo / Gender-violence against female members of the nursing staff in a general hospital in the municipality of São Paulo, BrazilOliveira, Ane Rodrigues de 21 September 2007 (has links)
Background: This study investigated gender violence against female nursing staff perpetrated by male intimate partners (IPV), family members and other aggressors. Objectives: To estimate the occurrence of psychological, physical and sexual violence; characterize the aggressors, as well as the attempt to seek help and where it was sought; analyze the differences between nurses and nursing aides/technicians as to the frequency of gender violence and to verify if the acts of aggression are designated as violence. Methods: In this cross sectional study, 179 professionals, aged 20 to 59 years old, were interviewed (50 nurses and 129 nursing aides / nurse technicians). A validated questionnaire was applied in face to face interviews conducted by trained interviewers. Results: IPV was the most frequent form of violence (63.7%; IC95%:55.7-70.4), followed by violence perpetrated by others (45.8% IC95%: 38.3-53.4) including patients and people accompanying them, colleagues within the field of health, chiefs of the nursing staffs, acquaintances and strangers. Family members occupied the third place as aggressors, (41.3%; IC95%:34.0-48.9), and the majority of these were fathers, brothers, uncles and cousins. There was an important amount of overlap of the types of IPV, being that the most common exclusive form was psychological violence (19.2%), followed by psychological, physical and sexual violence in conjunction (17.5%) and then by both psychological and physical violence (14.7%). Nursing aides/ technicians mentioned the occurrence of IPV more frequently than did the nurses (p<0.05). In general, the nursing staff did not seek help frequently: only 20.3% of those who suffered violence from other aggressors, 29.3% from family members and 29.7% from IPV sought help. Those who did not perceive their experience as a form of violence represented 31.9% of the subjects interviewed. Conclusions: The high rates of gender violence identified in this study are evidence of the occurrence of this form of violence among female health professionals with high levels of education. It is suggested that team supervisors be encouraged to focus on this theme in the workplace, addressing it by means of an ethical and supportive approach. By contributing towards the protection of health professional\'s well being, this could also help improve the quality of assistance for which they are responsible.
