Mesoscale Interactions in Porous Electrodes

Aashutosh Mistry (6630413) 11 June 2019 (has links)
Despite the central importance of porous electrodes to any advanced electrochemical system, there is no clear answer to “<i>How to make the best electrode</i>?”. The source of ambiguity lies in the incomplete understanding of convoluted material interactions at smaller – difficult to observe length and timescales. Such mesoscopic interactions, however, abide by the fundamental physical principles such as mass conservation. The porous electrodes are investigated in such a physics-based setting to comprehend the interplay among structural arrangement and off-equilibrium processes. As a result, a synergistic approach exploiting the complementary characteristics of controlled experiments and theoretical analysis emerges to allow mechanistic insights into the associated mesoscopic phenomena. The potential of this philosophy is presented by investigating three distinct electrochemical systems with their unique peculiarities.

Comportement thermo-hygro-mécanique différé des feuillus : des sciences du bois à l'ingénierie / Delayed thermo-hygro mechanical behavior of hardwoods : from wood sciences to engineering

Varnier, Maximin 15 March 2019 (has links)
The design and verification of timber structures, for use in Civil Engineering, is governed by the European standard Eurocode 5. It allows to size any structure element according to the load applied to it and assumptions about its environment. Essentially coordinated by the Nordic timber industry, this standard is based on the exclusive use of softwoods. However, French country has the largest hardwood forest in Europe. Today, these species have their place in timber structures by considering, for example, natural durability properties. Unfortunately, these species are not today considered in design rules. The EFEUR5 project, funded by the National Research Agency, aims to respond to this problem by doing work like those already carried out for softwoods. Thus, the work objectives are for understanding and modeling the long-term mechanical behavior of French hardwood species like oak, beech and poplar. In support of these species, Douglas fir is added as the conifer reference. The study starts with the anatomical structure analysis of the of the species studied. The objective of this analysis is to highlight the differences between these four species. Because the long-term mechanical behavior depends on moisture content, we must first determine the evolution of moisture in the section of a structural element. For this, it is presented in this chapter an innovative experimental protocol for determining the diffusion properties of a test tube located outdoors. The identification of the diffusion properties carried out we propose a study of the sensitivity of the water behavior differences on a structural element. The implementation of the evolution of moisture within a structure element, regardless of its geometry and environment, we present the different physical phenomena involved when creeping a structural element and their implementation in a code with finite elements. Next, we describe the completion of two four-point bending benches at the metric scale of hardwood and Douglas-fir beams. The instrumentation allows to analyze their deferred behavior according to their environment. In a second step, these numerical data are used to determine the hydro viscoelastic properties enabled, by inverse analysis. Thus, a comparison of the viscoelastic properties between these four species is presented. We conclude this study with a proposal for a new approach for considering the delayed mechanical behavior of structural elements. The approach consists in the determination of the long-term behavior through a reference behavior. The prediction of long-term deflection is then defined from the average humidity of the study element. This approach makes it possible to report both the geometry of the beam and its initial humidity.

Advanced low temperature metal hydride materials for low temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cell application

Ntsendwana, Bulelwa January 2010 (has links)
<p>Energy is one of the basic needs of human beings and is extremely crucial for continued development of human life. Our work, leisure and our economic, social and physical welfare all depend on the sufficient, uninterrupted supply of energy. Therefore, it is essential to provide adequate and affordable energy for improving human welfare and raising living standards. Global concern over environmental climate change linked to fossil fuel consumption has increased pressure to generate power from renewable sources [1]. Although substantial advances in renewable energy technologies have been made, significant challenges remain in developing integrated renewable energy systems due primarily to mismatch between load demand and source capabilities [2]. The output from renewable energy sources such as photo-voltaic, wind, tidal, and micro-hydro fluctuate on an hourly, daily, and seasonal basis. As a result, these devices are not well suited for directly powering loads that require a uniform and uninterrupted supply of input energy.</p>

Investigation of microparticle to system level phenomena in thermally activated adsorption heat pumps

Raymond, Alexander William 20 May 2010 (has links)
Heat actuated adsorption heat pumps offer the opportunity to improve overall energy efficiency in waste heat applications by eliminating shaft work requirements accompanying vapor compression cycles. The coefficient of performance (COP) in adsorption heat pumps is generally low. The objective of this thesis is to model the adsorption system to gain critical insight into how its performance can be improved. Because adsorption heat pumps are intermittent devices, which induce cooling by adsorbing refrigerant in a sorption bed heat/mass exchanger, transient models must be used to predict performance. In this thesis, such models are developed at the adsorbent particle level, heat/mass exchanger component level and system level. Adsorption heat pump modeling is a coupled heat and mass transfer problem. Intra-particle mass transfer resistance and sorption bed heat transfer resistance are shown to be significant, but for very fine particle sizes, inter-particle resistance may also be important. The diameter of the adsorbent particle in a packed bed is optimized to balance inter- and intra-particle resistances and improve sorption rate. In the literature, the linear driving force (LDF) approximation for intra-particle mass transfer is commonly used in place of the Fickian diffusion equation to reduce computation time; however, it is shown that the error in uptake prediction associated with the LDF depends on the working pair, half-cycle time, adsorbent particle radius, and operating temperatures at hand. Different methods for enhancing sorption bed heat/mass transfer have been proposed in the literature including the use of binders, adsorbent compacting, and complex extended surface geometries. To maintain high reliability, the simple, robust annular-finned-tube geometry with packed adsorbent is specified in this work. The effects of tube diameter, fin pitch and fin height on thermal conductance, metal/adsorbent mass ratio and COP are studied. As one might expect, many closely spaced fins, or high fin density, yields high thermal conductance; however, it is found that the increased inert metal mass associated with the high fin density diminishes COP. It is also found that thin adsorbent layers with low effective conduction resistance lead to high thermal conductance. As adsorbent layer thickness decreases, the relative importance of tube-side convective resistance rises, so mini-channel sized tubes are used. After selecting the proper tube geometry, an overall thermal conductance is calculated for use in a lumped-parameter sorption bed simulation. To evaluate the accuracy of the lumped-parameter approach, a distributed parameter sorption bed simulation is developed for comparison. Using the finite difference method, the distributed parameter model is used to track temperature and refrigerant distributions in the finned tube and adsorbent layer. The distributed-parameter tube model is shown to be in agreement with the lumped-parameter model, thus independently verifying the overall UA calculation and the lumped-parameter sorption bed model. After evaluating the accuracy of the lumped-parameter model, it is used to develop a system-level heat pump simulation. This simulation is used to investigate a non-recuperative two-bed heat pump containing activated carbon fiber-ethanol and silica gel-water working pairs. The two-bed configuration is investigated because it yields a desirable compromise between the number of components (heat exchangers, pumps, valves, etc.) and steady cooling rate. For non-recuperative two-bed adsorption heat pumps, the average COP prediction in the literature is 0.39 for experiments and 0.44 for models. It is important to improve the COP in mobile waste heat applications because without high COP, the available waste heat during startup or idle may be insufficient to deliver the desired cooling duty. In this thesis, a COP of 0.53 is predicted for the non-recuperative, silica gel-water chiller. If thermal energy recovery is incorporated into the cycle, a COP as high as 0.64 is predicted for a 90, 35 and 7.0°C source, ambient and average evaporator temperature, respectively. The improvement in COP over heat pumps appearing in the literature is attributed to the adsorbent particle size optimization and careful selection of sorption bed heat exchanger geometry.

Contribution à l’étude de l’influence des régimes bi-phasiques sur les performances des électrolyseurs de type PEM basse pression : approche numérique, analytique et expérimentale / Contribution to the study of the influence of bi-phasic regimes on the performance of electrolysers of low pressure PEM type : numerical, analytical and experimental approach

Aubras, Farid 27 April 2018 (has links)
Based on proton conduction of polymeric electrolyte membrane (PEM) technology, the water electrolysis (PEMWE) offers an interesting solution for efficiency hydrogen production. During the electrolysis process of water in PEMWE, the anodic side is the place where the water is splitting into oxygen, protons and electrons. The aim of this study is to recognize the link between two-phase flows (anode side) and cell performance under low pressure conditions. We have developed three approaches: the analytical approach and the numerical approach validated by the experimental data. For the numerical model, we have developed a two-dimensional stationary PEMWE model that takes into account electro-chemical reaction, mass transfer (bubbly flow), heat transfer and charges balance through the Membrane Electrodes Assembly (MEA). In order to take into account the changing electrical behavior, our model combines two scales of descriptions: at microscale within anodic active layer and MEA scale. The water management at both scales is strongly linked to the slug flow regime or the bubbly flow regime. Therefore, water content close to active surface areas depends on two-phase flow regimes. Our simulation results demonstrate that the transition from bubble to slug flow in the channel is associated with improvement in mass transport, a reduction of the ohmic resistance and an enhancement of the PEMWE efficiency. Regarding the analytical model, we have developed a one-dimensional stationary isothermal PEMWE model that takes into account electro-chemical reaction, mass transfer and charges balance through the Membrane Electrodes Assembly (MEA). The analytical approach permit to obtain mathematical solution of the activation overpotential, the ohmic losses and the bubbles overpotential respectively for the low current density, the middle current density and the high current density. This approach quantify the total overpotential of the cell, function of the operational and intrinsic numbers. In terms of perspective, the analytical model could be used for the diagnostic of the electrolyzer PEM.

Etude des transferts couplés de chaleur et de masse dans les matériaux bio-sourcés : approches numérique et expérimentale / Study of heat and mas transfer within bio-based building materials : numerical and experimental approaches

Asli, Mounir 07 December 2017 (has links)
The work developed in this thesis aims to study the hygrothermal behavior of bio-sourced insulating materials, and more particularly wood fibers, hemp concrete, linen wool, sheep wool, material made of textile recycling (metisse®) and flax shives. These materials, which are essentially natural, have specific characteristics linked to their origin (animal or vegetable) and their structure (fibers, straw, solid matrix, etc.). Their very high porosity makes them reactive to the relative humidity variations, which can affect their thermal performances and their durability (as for all materials), but also give them a regulation capacities. In order to improve the knowledge of these particular materials, first, we propose to study the impact caused by moisture on their thermal characteristics, mainly thermal conductivity and specific heat. Then the hygrothermal characteristics are studied, which makes it possible to better understand the phenomena depending on the capacities of adsorption, desorption, permeability or water vapor resistance. Also, we realize the importance of the temperature gradient impact on the evolution of the hygroscopic transfers within the materials. By placing the studied bio-sourced insulation materials under random loading or under real conditions, it will be possible to follow their hygrothermal behavior from an experimental point of view. The numerical approach makes it possible to identify the preponderant influence parameters, in the context of the prediction of coupled heat and mass transfers by simulation under particular conditions of use, such as the renovation of an existing habitat. On the basis of in situ measurements, it can be seen that these materials have a high adaptability to environments whose relative humidity is evolutionary.

Physique des métamorphoses de la neige sèche : de la microstructure aux propriétés macroscopiques / Physics of dry snow metamorphism : from microstructure to macroscopic properties

Calonne, Neige 14 November 2014 (has links)
The main objective of the thesis is to improve our knowledge about dry snow metamorphismand its physical description, at the microscopic (ice grains and pores) andmacroscopic (snow layer) scales. First, the homogenization method of multiple scaleexpansions is applied for the first time to the physics involved in dry snow metamorphism. This way, we present the equivalent macroscopic descriptions of heat and vaportransfers derived from the physical description at micro-scale. We consider at the grainscale diffusion, conduction, and forced convection, coupled to phase changes (sublimationand deposition). Second, the effective properties of transport arising in the macroscopicdescriptions (effective thermal conductivity, effective coefficient of vapor diffusion, andintrinsic permeability) are estimated from 3D images of snow spanning the whole range ofdensity and snow types. Finally, the monitoring of metamorphism with time is considered. The relationship between the microstructure and the effective properties of a snow layerare investigated during temperature gradient metamorphism using 3D images. We presentthen a new cryogenic cell that we developed to monitor the grain to grain evolution of asnow sample by time-lapse tomography during the metamorphism, and which operates atroom temperature.
