The idea of circularity, of unity and cyclical renewal is a frequent theme in the works of Caio Fernando Abreu and sets up a narrative structure with the same pattern. This structure, which reproduces the cycle of life, is reflected in fictional texts narrating the story of a character-protagonist, since the transition from childhood to adolescence and until maturity. This work proposes that the set of the writer's fictional work can be read as a narrative unity which plot is the trajectory of a character in the formation of his individuality, his conscience and his literary vocation. By focusing on the individual, their experiences, encounters and disagreements, dramas and joys, he composes a human emotional radiography of his time in a period of nearly four decades. In addition to the issues exposed, and for them as well, the study intends to highlight the relevance, timeliness and quality of Caio's work, by addressing universal and perennial themes that transcend his historical moment and for his unique and refined style in the art of writing. The Author has passed away in 1996 and his books continue to be reissued, including unreleased material, new translations of his books are being published, as well as e-books, in Brazil and abroad. The fact that he has been conquering so many young readers of the XXI century attests to the vitality of the work of this master of ingenuity and art. To investigate and describe the ways in which the narrative unity is performed, the theoretical background are the essays by Ricardo Piglia, conferences and lectures by Jorge Luis Borges, theories of Novel of Formation or Bildungsroman, Joseph Campbell's research on The Hero's Journey or Monomyth and other additional studies.

A mitologia judaico-cristã e o herói japonês: a jornada mítica de Mudo Setsuna no mangá Angel Sanctuary / Judeo-Christian Mythology and the Japanese Hero: Mud Setsunas Mythic Journey in the Manga Angel SanctuaryPriscila Gerolde Gava 24 September 2018 (has links)
This dissertation thesis proposes the analysis of the trajectory of the manga Angel Sanctuarys protagonist, from author Yuki Kaori, originally published in Japan between 1994 and 2000, considering Joseph Campbells Heros Journey, in order to trace his profile as a contemporary Japanese manga hero. It also proposes the analysis of the mangas dialog with the Judeo-Christian mythology, main source of the authors inspiration and references for the confection of her story. To do so, the characteristic elements of comic books and the Heros Journey are presented, so that they can be applied to Angel Sanctuary, in which the journeys steps and archetypes are indicated, as well as their relations to the mythologies in which they are based. The analysis points to a difference between typical Japanese thinking, that tends to face the presence of opposing forces inside a single being and in nature with naturality, in contrast with the well-defined separation between Good and Evil existent in Judeo-Christian religions.

The Woman as . . . : The Feminine Quest in The Feminine Quest in Lágrimas en la lluvia and El peso del corazón by Rosa MonteroGlassett, Zachary Nelson 01 June 2018 (has links)
Rosa Montero's novels Lágrimas en la lluvia and Peso del corazón focus on Bruna Husky, an android private detective living in Madrid in 2109. Husky's career leads her into investigating various sinister plots, both of which she falls victim to. These quests lead her to make discoveries about herself that challenge her beliefs about herself. All the cases that Bruna investigates take her on journeys that mirror Campbell's structure of the monomythic quest. My analysis of the novels focuses on how Bruna follows the model of the Campbellian cycle while at the same time questioning the quest, keeping true to archetypes of the feminine quest as established by Anis Pratt and Dana Heller. My article focuses on three distinctive steps in the quest, the crossing of the threshold, initiation, and the return, as well as the most important characteristic of the feminine quest, the heroine's negation of the patriarchal society.

Nas trilhas do herói. histórias em quadrinhos & itinerários de formação / In the tracks of the hero: comic books & training itinerariesBrésio, Sabrina da Paixão 12 September 2016 (has links)
\"The hero\'s jornney is a sellf-formative path present in ancestral narratives which, going beyond space-time barriers, still echo in contemporary productions without losing its symbolic potential.
sistemas diferentes do polissistema literário.
1994), Jornada do Herói (Campbell, 1997) e polissistema literário (Zohar, 2013).
A metodologia
intertextualmente relacionadas. Os alunos conseguiram estabelecer relações entre as
histórias lidas tendo como referência a Jornada do Herói elaborada por Campbell. / This research aims to test a strategy to expand the literary repertoire of students of the
7th grade of Elementary School in a public school in Juiz de Fora: the creation of a
community of readers in the classroom through shared reading of a reference work for
students - in this case the Bible, more specifically narratives related to the heroes Moses
and Jesus - using as a key reading the Hero's Journey, which will establish an
intertextual relationship between the already known work and a network of new works
belonging to systems different from the literary polysystem. The hypothesisis that
reading the stories of the biblical heroes Moses and Jesus will allow students to expand
their repertoire by appropriating literary strategies mobilized by the Hero's Journey,
both in these stories and in the stories of the Greek heroes and the Celtic hero King
Arthur . In addition, it is intended to check if it is possible to promote a newly acquired
repertoire activation in a reading of parts of the contemporary Harry Potter series that
takes in to account the intense intertextual dialogue it maintains with traditional
narratives. The theoretical assumptions underlying this research were: literary repertoire
(Iser, 1996), community of readers (Chartier, 1994), Hero's Journey (Campbell, 1997)
and literary polysystem (Zohar, 2013). In addition, the shared reading strategy was
adopted (Colomer, 2007). The methodology use disaction research and the instruments
of data collection are diagnostic questionnaires, teacher's field diary and student reading
diary. From the shared reading of the works mentioned above, we were able to build a
community of readers from the Bible to other intertextually related works. The students
were able to establish relationships between the stories read with reference to the Hero's
Journey elaborated by Campbell.

Trust no truth : an analysis of the visual translation styles in the conspiracy filmStemmet, Carl 18 January 2012 (has links)
This study investigates the manner in which cinematic visual translation styles can be used to incorporate dominant and subversive historical versions in fictional narratives constructed within the conspiracy film genre. Fictional characters in a conspiracy film are often tasked with a mission to discover the alternative historical accounts, accounts which for all intents and purposes are regularly kept hidden from the public eye. These accounts are presented as a plausible and often unconventional narrative which challenges the dominant version of events. A visual translation style is a term used to describe the various methods in which a film can be shot and edited in order to create a specific aesthetic and communicate a specific idea. These styles can consist of camera movements, shot sizes or editing techniques, all of which aid in communicating a specific idea in a film. This study analyses the conventions of the conspiracy film, with regard to the manner in which the alternative and dominant versions of historical accounts are constructed. Furthermore, the study explores how these alternative and hegemonic historical events are presented and communicated through the use of visual translation styles. Theorists such as Jean Baudrillard and David Bordwell are referenced when discussing the meaning and application of terms such as “truth”, “narrative” and “history” and to problematise these notions in the context of this particular genre. Other key notions investigated include aporia, metalanguage and object-language and notions of genre theory. The conceptual and theoretical framework regarding visual translation styles is further complemented by writers such as Don Fairservice and Ken Dancyger. / Dissertation (MA)--University of Pretoria, 2012. / Drama / unrestricted

"Stick vs. Rope. Gun vs. Strand." : The Monomyth and the Hero as Warrior in Kojima Productions' 2019 Video Game Death Stranding / "Pinne vs. Rep. Pistol vs. Tråd." : Monomyten och Hjälten som Krigare i Kojima Productions 2019 Videospel Death StrandingNäsling, Beatrice January 2022 (has links)
Released in 2019, the video game Death Stranding follows the monomythic structure described by Joseph Campbell in his 1949 book The Hero with a Thousand Faces. The journey begins with the protagonist, Sam “Porter” Bridges, reluctantly accepting his calls to adventure, and, as he begins to move west, he receives supernatural aid from an increasing number of helpers he encounters along the way. Crossing the thresh-old, into the world of danger and adventure, has him meeting the threshold guardian Higgs, the primary antagonist of the game. During this first stage, the player of the game learns how to control Sam’s movements and how to navigate this world to-gether with the Bridge Baby known as Lou, who helps Sam on his journey. The second stage of the journey has Sam moving through a road of trials, overcoming both the physical obstacles of the terrain and the emotional obstacles of the people he helps along the way. He is at one point tempted to adopt the Bridge Baby Lou, his primary helper, but resists said temptation and continues on his jour-ney, until he is finally reunited with his sister, Amelie, who is threatening to end hu-manity in an extinction event. The lessons he has learnt on his journey – to focus on helping others and only using violence when the situation calls for it – leads him to his apotheosis, which is the realization of the value of other people and the relation-ships between them. With this realization, and Sam’s physical manifestation of it in his embracing of Amelie, convinces her that humanity deserves to live to die another day, and so the world is saved from falling into ruin. The third stage of Sam’s journey has him struggling to return home, aided at long last by the help of the friends he made on his journey. Sam, however, is uninter-ested in the world he helped save, and aims to return to his life of solitude. Upon his atonement with his father, however, he resolves this internal conflict and he is now free to live life as he wishes – as a father to the now freed baby Lou. The use of game mechanics in Death Stranding ultimately provides the player with alternatives to violence, giving way to a narrative that can contain as-pects of the monomythic hero that are not exclusively related to the typical warrior hero seen in most action games. Instead, the game frames the tools of the warrior as the stepping-stone to the hero as lover, who uses more peaceful means to achieve their goals. This exemplifies the potential of the video game medium as a platform for the monomyth, and how games could come to encompass a wider variety of he-roic figures than those currently available. The Hero with a Thousand Faces.
