Ausstellung kuratiert von Gwendolin Kremer / Die Ausstellungsbroschüren des „Projektraum am Weißen Hirsch. Galerie Grafikladen“ dokumentieren die Ausstellungstätigkeit eines nicht institutionellen Ausstellungsraumes in Dresden zwischen 2010 und 2016. Die Galerie widmete sich dem Werk zeitgenössischer junger Künstler, vorwiegend Meisterschüler und Absolventen, die in der Regel einen biografischen Bezug zu Dresden haben. Das Ausstellungskonzept war offen für die verschiedensten künstlerischen Ausdrucksformen – von Malerei über Fotografie bis zu performativen Ansätzen. Jährlich fanden vier bis fünf, von wechselnden Kuratoren entwickelte Ausstellungen statt. Tesis para optar al grado de Magister en Comunicación Política / El presente trabajo de investigación dará luces respecto a los constructos discursivo-ideológicos elaborados por los cuatro candidatos que se presentaron a la disputa presidencial de nuestro país en las pasadas elecciones presidenciales de 2005: Joaquín Lavín, Michelle Bachelet, Sebastián Piñera y Tomás Hirsch. La idea es aproximarse a los objetivos primarios y secundarios que dispusieron en sus discursos de campaña los cuatro abanderados presidenciales, dando cuenta así de las similitudes y diferencias que se vislumbraban en las construcciones de significado expuestas por cada uno de los comandos. Para lograr este objetivo se construirá una matriz de análisis discursivo basada en las propuestas teóricas de Patrick Charaudeau y Teun A. van Dijk, sistema que ayudará a determinar las características específicas de cada discurso de campaña y la forma en que se relacionaron éstos con las unidades de significación elaboradas por los contrincantes. Se incorporarán datos del contexto inmediato y los resultados de los principales sondeos de opinión con el fin de realizar una lectura global de todo el proceso que descanso tras la elección presidencial vivida en Chile el día 11 de diciembre de 2005.

Sua atuação na editora do Rio de Janeiro foi marcada pela versatilidade de recursos visuais e pela ampla liberdade concedida pelo editor Ênio Silveira. No mesmo período produziu capas para a editora Globo, de Porto Alegre, em quantidade muito inferior, mas com a mesma liberdade e qualidade. Após passagem pelos EUA, Hirsch foi contratado pela editora madrilenha Codex como diretor de arte da Coleção Museus do Mundo, e retornou ao Brasil no final dos anos 1960, passando a trabalhar para a Livraria José Olympio Editora. Esta dissertação tem como tema central a relação entre o lettering e as imagens no trabalho de Hirsch. Essa relação é estudada a partir da análise das capas de livros produzidas por Hirsch entre 1959 e 1976. Dentro dessa amostragem abrangente são identificadas as características mais marcantes e recorrentes do desenho de letras nas capas do designer austríaco. Também é apresentada uma pequena amostra da produção de alguns capistas que atuaram no Brasil nas décadas de 1930, 1940 e 1950, fornecendo uma visão mais acurada da importância do trabalho de Eugênio Hirsch. / Abstract: Eugênio Hirsch (Vienna, 1923 - Rio de Janeiro, 2001) is best known by his work for the publishing house Civilização Brasileira in the first half of the 1960s, wich was marked by a large range of visual resources used with great freedom granted to him by editor Ênio Silveira. In the same period he made book covers for Globo, a publishing house based on the city of Porto Alegre. Although less expressive in number, these covers kept the same quality and freedom. After a short period in the USA, Hirsch was hired by Madri based publishing house Codex as art director, being responsible for El Mundo de los Museus collection. When returning to Brazil in the end of the 1960s, he begun to work for Livraria José Olympio Editora, in Rio de Janeiro. This research is centered in the relation between letters and images in Hirsch's book covers. This relation is studied by analizing the book covers made by Hirsch between 1959 and 1976. In this wide sampling, the most relevant and recurring caractheristics related to lettering and type in Hirsch's work are identified. Also presented is a sample of the graphic work done by some cover artists that had worked in Brazil during the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s, allowing a more accurate perception of the importance of Eugênio Hirsch's work. / Doutorado / Artes / Doutor em Artes

The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of the comprehensive school reform model core knowledge on the reading achievement of eighth grade students located in a suburban north Texas school district. The data compared the mean scores on the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills of students attending the experimental core knowledge school with the control school that did not use the core knowledge curriculum. Students from both schools were compared for student achievement gains overall as well as several other categories. The study also used a qualitative survey that asked key faculty members at both schools questions regarding levels of curriculum implementation, staff knowledge of curriculum, etc. The data showed no significant differences between student achievement scores at the experimental school compared with students at the control school. However, the study found that the type of standardized test seems to have an impact on whether students in a core knowledge curriculum show higher achievement than students in a traditional curriculum. Students in a core knowledge curriculum show higher achievement on norm-referenced standardized tests when compared with students not attending a core knowledge school. When taking a criterion-referenced test such as the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills, there is no difference in reading achievement between the two groups.

One of the most important questions facing legal philosophers concerns the legitimacy of state institutions of legal punishment which visit citizens who have broken the law with condemnation and hard treatment. The purpose of this thesis is to attempt to answer the question of how we ought to respond to criminal offenders whose guilt has been established. The Canadian approach to criminal sentencing is evaluated, as are prominent restorative justice sentencing models. A novel composite-aims restorative justice model of responding to convicted offenders is introduced and the model’s aims and limits are specified. The thesis attempts to establish that a composite-aims model which encompasses certain restorative justice values and processes can provide a desirable framework for responding to convicted offenders. The implication for Canadian criminal justice policy is that the practice of applying punitive sanctions that are proportional to the moral gravity of the criminal offence should be abandoned in favour of a model based on securing censure, amends, crime control and reformation.

The purpose of this master’s thesis is to examine the relationship between mothers and sons in Mustafa Can’s Tätt intill dagarna: Berättelsen om min mor (Close to the days: The story of my mother) from 2006, Theodor Kallifatides’ Mödrar och söner (Mothers and sons) from 2007 and Ocean Vuong’s On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous from 2019. These novels examine themes of migration and motherhood through the perspective of the sons, who all write semi-autobiographically about their mothers.   This thesis uses a broad theoretical framework, with postcolonial theories of hybridity and double consciousness alongside motherhood studies as the primary sources. Works by Frantz Fanon, Homi K. Bhabha, Sara Ahmed, and Marianne Hirsch, are, alongside others, used in purpose of creating a nuanced understanding of the relationships between mother, son and place, as these relations are portrayed in the novels.   The analysis is divided into three chapters, where the novels are represented by one chapter each. The final part of the thesis is a comparative discussion, in which the novels are read alongside each other, in order to draw conclusions on the ways in which these authors represent the relations between mother and place, and how this affects the sons’ feelings of identity. In summary, this thesis shows that the mothers play an important role in their sons’ subject formations, and that the sons’ relationships with their home countries are affected by, or correlated to, their relationships with their mothers. This is done using imagery of nature, portrayals of language barriers, and other descriptions of fragmented identities.

The thesis focuses on the evaluation of Research and Development in the Czech Republic. The introductory part of thesis highlights the recency of the topic and describes the quantitative and qualitative methods of assessing outlets of science. The second part of the thesis discusses in detail the evaluation of science in the Czech Republic; the legislative framework and the evaluation of Research and Development are mentioned. The third chapter shows the evaluation of institutional Research and Development and uses the 1st Faculty of Medicine of Charles University in Prague as an example. The core of the thesis is the fourth chapter with an analysis of selected primary scientometric data. The final part summarizes the entire topic and highlights some problem areas [Author's abstract].
