A COMMUNION OF LOVE: THE ANIMATING PRINCIPLE BEHIND THE CHRISTOCENTRIC SPIRITUALITY OF ROBERT MURRAY M’CHEYNEStone, Jordan 07 June 2018 (has links)
This study’s main contribution is its aim to reorient the common perception surrounding M’Cheyne’s pursuit of holiness. It argues that rightly understanding M’Cheyne’s spirituality must begin with the fundamental issue of why he pursued the means of grace as he did, before reckoning with how he used those means. Such a reorientation reveals that loving communion with Christ was the driving force for M’Cheyne’s vision of the Christian life.
Chapters 1 through 5 lay the foundation for understanding M’Cheyne’s spirituality. Chapters 6 through 10 expand on that foundation by demonstrating how M’Cheyne’s piety manifested itself in various spheres of his life and ministry.
Chapter 1 states the project’s thesis and surveys the history of studies on M’Cheyne. Chapter 2 offers an overview of M’Cheyne’s life and ministry. Chapter 3 places M’Cheyne in the various contextual streams of his day. Understanding the ecclesiastical, philosophical, cultural, and pastoral contexts in which M’Cheyne lived aids an understanding of M’Cheyne’s spirituality and its subsequent appeal. Chapter 4 analyzes the essential contours of M’Cheyne’s theology. Importantly, his theology was that of the Westminster Standards. Chapter 5 systematizes M’Cheyne’s key thoughts on devotion to Christ. The Song of Songs provided the grammar that marked his conception of pursuing holiness. To grow in Christ is to know the Rose of Sharon, and to commune with the Beloved.
Chapter 6 considers M’Cheyne’s practice of communion with Christ through the means of grace, specifically God’s Word, the sacraments, and prayer. Chapter 7 examines M’Cheyne’s preaching of Christ. His sermons exalted Christ, focusing on Christ as our Surety, Savior, and Judge. Chapter 8 shows M’Cheyne’s dedication to evangelism through his work with children, method of visitation, longing for revival, and strategies for church extension. Chapter 9 highlights an oft-neglected pillar of M’Cheyne’s pursuit of holiness: his Sabbatarian zeal. Chapter 10 assesses M’Cheyne’s eschatology and its effect on his spirituality.

This thesis is the result of reflections on the work of Arthur Schopenhauer which focus on the origin of holiness in the metaphysical system of this philosopher. Starting from objections made to the Kantian philosophy, Schopenhauer established the Will as thing in itself. The thesis attempts to follow the argumentative structure The World As Will and Representation, in continuous dialogue with Platonic and Kantian philosophy and taking into account the main religious matrices considered by the author. The importance of this issue within the scope of Schopenhauer’s philosophy is obvious. Holiness is regarded by the author as the possible result of single pulse of Will, but it is more precisely its self-denial, which can lead to the liberation of man, and through him of the whole nature which is attached to a continuous objectivation of blind Will which produces suffering. The relevance of this thesis can is also be made present in a wiser discussion of how to think about values held by religions through pure philosophical argument.

Av denna världen? : Emil Gustafson, moderniteten och den evangelikala väckelsen / Of the World? : Emil Gustafson, Modernity and EvangelicalismHalldorf, Joel January 2012 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to investigate the relationship between evangelicalism and modernity with the Swedish holiness preacher Emil Gustafson (1862–1900) as a case. This is achieved by comparing Gustafson’s spirituality with Charles Taylor’s characterization of modernity. The investigation identifies five central themes in Gustafson’s spirituality: conversion, calling, suffering, sanctification, and spiritual experience. With regard to these themes paral-lels with modernity are noted. For example, the analysis shows that modern individualism influenced Gustafson’s view of conversion, and that instrumental rationality informed his evaluations of his own work as a preacher. But there are also instances where he distanced himself from modernity. He did not embrace a modern optimistic anthropology, or the view of suffering as purely negative. It is concluded that Gustafson is neither anti-modern, nor identical to Taylor’s depiction of modernity. He represents one kind of modernity. One that is theocentric rather than anthropo-centric. In order to uphold this theocentric character Gustafson’s opposition to the basic struc-ture of modernity had to be grounded in social practices. For instance, his negative anthropol-ogy was grounded in the revival-meeting where outsiders were called to repent and rely on God rather than themselves. Based on the results from this study it is suggested that evangelicalism should be inter-preted as neither in conflict with modernity, nor in continuity with it, but rather as a kind of modernity. There are multiple modernities, and evangelicalism is one of them.

Posvátnost ve výtvarném umění / Holiness in Fine ArtsPodlahová, Klára January 2016 (has links)
The diploma thesis deals with the topic of holiness in fine arts in all three parts, namely in theoretical, didactic and fine arts level. The first part of the theoretical level focuses on the concept of holiness and individualization of experience with holiness with respect to manifestation of the category in a broad art context. With the use of specialist literature, the second section of the theoretical research follows on obtained findings about the holiness concept and it also deals with sacral space of The St. Wenceslas' Chapel at The Cathedral of St. Vitus and The Chapel of St. Cross at The Karlštejn Castle with regard to the possibility of a strong psychological effect from these venues. The didactic level is the logical outcome and a free inspiration of the theoretical part. It follows not only on the sacral space of both chapels but it also deals with secular usage of pupils. The main aim of all tasks is to guide pupils to think about category of holiness via their own visual expression in cross-subjects connection, that is with regard to social, cultural and historical context. The authorial fine arts part takes account of many impacts coming from the previous parts. The result is a series of six paintings out of which two can be considered primary experiments. It is mainly personal...

Previous issue date: 2011-04-05 / This thesis is a description and a socio-historical analysis of Church of the Nazarene in all major aspects that contributed to its insertion and expansion in Brazil. We describe the
formative history of this church in the United States, drawing on historical and sociological considerations of theological values that it brings, as arminianism, the wesleyan tradition and the doctrine of holiness. We try to understand, primarily, as was the process of integration and expansion of the Church of the Nazarene in Brazil, its governance, its liturgical practice, the training of pastors, the form of aggregation of members and the relationship established between these pastors and members. The study of that denomination is still incipient in the Brazilian academic, so we try to overcome the lack of information about it in the medium. Therefore, we emphasize the aspects of a socio-historical institutional approach that can distance themselves form the Church as the Nazarenes understand their own denomination. In
addressing this subject, we emphasize the literature, documentary analysis, use of audiovisual resources, as well as participant observation. This work enabled the understanding that the Church of the Nazarene, from its beginnings, the practice follows the distinction between Protestant in which it operates. In the case of Brazil, where there are many others
denominations, the Church has been firmed on its main distinction, the doctrine of holiness, which, by a focus on the theory of religious economies, has served as a product to meet specific market niche Brazilian religious.
religioso brasileiro.

Previous issue date: 2016-03-21 / This dissertation shows a research of the representation of holiness and memory of
St. Francis of Assisi beginning in the 13th century. The holiness attributed to the saint
was built initially by the Franciscan Order between the years 1220 and 1266. At first
moment, with the speech of the institutionalization of the new monastic order, its
main feature was the social work focused on the urban environment with a new
proposal of apostolic life of experiencing the Gospel in absolute poverty. The second
stage was the proper way of life proposed by St. Francis of Assisi to follow in Christ´s
footsteps in the perspective of the same absolute poverty. However, with the
Franciscan fraternity, there were internal debates about the way of life in absolute
poverty and also countless hagiographies that showed the saint from different
perspectives on living the Gospel. The third stage was with St. Bonaventure, who
aimed to put an end to discussions on extreme poverty publishing in 1266 the
Greater Legend to unify the holiness of St. Francis and conduct the Franciscan
Order in the Roman Curia institutional procedures. Other aspects that determined the
representation of St. Francis´s holiness were the miracles of the stigmata reported in
the saint s body. The Franciscan Order attributes the sanctity of "Corpus Sanctum"
(Holy Body) to Francis´s body because it received Christ´s wounds. In the face of
the representations, we noted by the narrations of the miracles got by the faithful on
the holy grave. The main documentations sources that contributed to this research
were the hagiographies: First Life of Thomas of Celano, The Greater Legend of St.
Bonaventure, The Legend of the Three Companions, the Chronicles, The Regula
Bullata and Regula non Bullata, and the saint´s works: Testament, Canticles and
Letters.
A santidade
As principais

Converting rituals: the worship of nineteenth-century camp meetings and the growth of the Methodist Episcopal Church in New EnglandMount Elewononi, Sarah Jean 08 April 2016 (has links)
This thesis examines the practice of the camp meeting as a significant factor in the growth of the Methodist Episcopal Church in nineteenth-century New England. Such a comprehensive investigation into camp meetings in New England has never been done before. Also, with the exception of one book and one other recent dissertation, the general history of Methodism in New England is a topic that was overlooked for nearly a century. This research helps to fill those gaps.
Many scholars give credit to camp meetings for fostering conversion, though the focus has generally been on camps held in the American South and the western frontier. After briefly recounting the rise of Methodism and camp meetings in the United States, the thesis turns to a more specific focus on the rise of Methodism and camp meetings in New England prior to 1823. Zion's Herald newspaper provides a steady and previously untapped source of primary information about camp meetings in New England from its first appearance in 1823 to well into the twentieth century.
After discussion of some key developments of New England Methodism relevant to camp meetings between 1823 and 1871, a thick description of one camp meeting in 1823 is presented to show how the many parts worked together. This is followed by an account of aspects of the camp meetings that might be classified broadly as ritual, how these changed over time, and the impact they had on the process of identity formation at the camps.
The spotlight is then directed toward the liturgical aspects of camp meetings as practiced in New England. These include components of worship practices common to Methodist congregations of the period as they gathered for prayer meetings, Sunday worship and quarterly conferences, such as preaching, praying, singing, and love feasts, and also those acts of worship developed specifically for camp meetings such as dedicating the grounds, and the closing ritual procession and "parting hand." As with the ritual practices, attention is again given both to how these worship practices influenced worshippers, and how they changed over time.
Finally the interpretive framework of "poetic discourse" offered by Stephen Cooley is used to analyze the most potent ritual elements involved in the process of conversion and church growth in conversation with contemporary scholars in the fields of sociology and ritual studies.
In the end this study shows not only the factors that fostered conversions and church growth, but also how the camp meetings gradually lost their potency as they changed over time. / 2017-01-01T00:00:00Z

Previous issue date: 2015-04-10 / Under the eye of the Holy Mother: articulations between the life of Saint Veronica
Giuliana and the anorexia clinic aims at relating facts from the life of Saint Veronica, who
lived in Italy in the late 17th century and the early 18th century, with today s anorexia
clinic. The analysis of her diaries and the registers in her canonization process show how
much her perseverant life style, marked by periods of intensive fasting, the violence
against her own body, and her search for holiness under the benevolent eye of the Church
associates her with modern anorexic symptoms. This paper aims at setting up a parallel
between two kinds of relationship: that of Christianity s women saints and martyrs with the
Church (the Holy Mother), and that of anorexic girls with their mothers. Accomplices of a
lethal project, these pairs comply with the appealing of a perfection ideal. Although
separated by several centuries, they present the same symptoms and manifestations of a
timeless superego that is passed down from generation to generation. The analysis of such
lives marked by excess reveals how an Ideal that was born and built up at the beginning
of the western medieval era transcends time and is revealed by people s singularity / A tese intitulada Sob o olhar da Santa Madre: articulações entre a vida de Santa Veronica
A análise

Previous issue date: 2014-05-06 / This dissertation develops on the issue seen as hagiographic literature from the life of
Father Gabriel Malagrida which aims to extract an understanding of holiness from the
colonial era . Problematizes the subject , with the backdrop of theological reflection ,
questions such as: What is the cultural context in which the narratives of the life of
Malagrida then inserted ? You can establish a hagiographic model of holiness from the
investigation of biographies of Malagrida ? What is the relationship that we establish
between narrative Matias Rodrigues , Life of Father Gabriel Malagrida and more
relevant information about the lives of saints hagiographic work , Legenda Aurea ? The
method used is the investigation of literary , biographical and hagiographic literature of
life Malagrida and other texts that contribute in understanding the thematic sources. The
research aims to contribute to this approach in the valuation of a character of historical
importance to Brazil , Jesuit Malagrida . It was found , first, that the current model of
holiness has its origins in the medieval conception of Portuguese mother permeates all
Brazilian colony . Then proved the hypothesis that an investigation of biographical
works Malagrida views from the understanding of hagiographic literature , could
provide us sufficient evidence to establish a model of colonial medieval holiness.
Finally , we relate this concept to the hagiography contained in Legenda Aurea in order
to delineate this paradigm of holiness / Esta dissertação desenvolve-se acerca da questão hagiográfica entendida como literatura
Qual é a

Previous issue date: 2017-12-15 / The present research aims to understand the male homoerotic practice existing in
Leviticus 20:13 during of the Babylonian post-exile. Our initial proposal is based to
build understanding through the analysis of the words sex, abomination, death, having
the code of holiness (Lv 17-26) in this literary context. In this way, we will use as
research methodology, the bibliographic research, developed based on already
published books and materials. The Bíblia hebraica Stuttgartensia (1997) will
contribute in the translation and analysis of Sacred texts. In addition, we will use the
portughese versions of the the Jerusalem Bible (1991) and Almeida Revista e
Corrigida (1995), which will help us collect and record data pertinent to the clipping
being searched. We have recourse to the historical-critical method that will help us in
the textual analysis of all Levitical literature. We will use Leviticus verse 18:23 in the
data analysis, due to its similarity to the clipping to be researched, which will be of
great value in the exegetical construction of the text. The use of the conflictual method
in the analysis in Leviticus 20:13 will make the hermeneutics of the text have a new
perspective on the understanding of common sense. The discourse of homosexuality
inserted in the Hebrew Bible must be analyzed from temporal perspectives, since it is
an old writing from 538 BC, so our effort is to be able to contribute through a sociocultural
translation, of the presented clipping in Leviticus 20:13.
Recorremos à utilização do método históricocrítico
