Dissertação_Jamille Cardoso.pdf: 8094149 bytes, checksum: 9979eadfe691fab8ff8555db0c702c2e (MD5) / CNPq / inquisitoriais presenciaram um fenômeno bastante curioso que, para a percepção
religiosa ocidental e a ortodoxia católica, causou profundo desassossego e
estarrecimento.
Partindo do
portuguesa.
indígena; Inquisição.
Around the year 1580, the Jesuits, royal authorities, settlers and later inquisitorial agents
witnessed a very curious phenomenon that for the Western religious perception and the
Catholic orthodoxy, caused deep unrest and horror. Known as Holiness of Jaguaripe, the
religious and "syncretic” movement that emerged in the backwoods of Orobó, and then
settled in Jaguaripe in Bahia Reconcavo and from where it spread to other regions as
well, shook the colonization in its two front lines, evangelization and exploitation.
Based on the context in which the Holiness was generated, this work aims to analyze
between the years 1580-1595 the spread and adhesion processes from the historical
experience of the subjects who participated in the rituals, joined, believed and
propagated the "indigenous sect" and therefore they had to attend the desk of the visitor
Heitor Furtado de Mendonça, between 1591 and 1595. The denunciations, confessions
and processes produced by the First Visitation to the parts of Bahia tell us much about
the heresies that were practiced by these individuals; it also says the way the Inquisition
evaluated their crimes and their penitents and the way they handled the heathen
practices in a so paradoxical universe as it was a Portuguese colony. But this
documentary framework, if read with due care and hermeneutical content, can show us
ways of reworking and resistance that indigenous peoples have built from the colonial
exploitation and Christian catechesis, Jaguaripe Holiness being not only a symbol of
heresy in the tropics, but above all a demonstration of Indian agency that harnessing the
political to the religious, managed to impose limits to the Christian colonization. This
way we do not stick only to the meanings, symbols and rites present in our object of
analysis, but also to the context, indigenous policies, contradictions and conflicts that
make up the social and ethnic relations especially during the time of emergence of
Holiness of Jaguaripe, moment in which different cultural, social and economic forms
clashed with the Portuguese colonization process.

[en] HOLINESS, SOURCE OF PROMOTION OF THE COMMON HOME: CHRISTIAN UNITY AND ECOLOGY FROM JOHN WESLEY AND POPE FRANCIS / [pt] SANTIDADE, FONTE DE PROMOÇÃO DA CASA COMUM: UNIDADE DOS CRISTÃOS E ECOLOGIA A PARTIR DE JOHN WESLEY E DO PAPA FRANCISCOGUSTAVO HENRIQUE ESTEVAM EMILIO 19 May 2022 (has links)
[en] The notion of common home, a term used by the current Catholic Pope to call for care for the planet we live in, also refers to the Christian faith s ideal that all people, in harmony with all creation, under God s care and guidance, will live in joyful, peaceful and just relationships, according to the original purpose of
creation. Having this project as an integral part of their faith, it is up to Christians to seek to collaborate in a decisive way for its concrete realization. And, as a sign of this purpose, it is necessary to witness the possibility of expressions of visible unity, beginning with Christians themselves. In the same way, the care for the planet evidences the Christian hope for the renewal of the whole world, and thus
Christians must be protagonists in this urgent issue of this time. This work brings Christian unity and ecology together, seeing them as issues of the common home, and seeks in the issue of holiness a foundation of faith and spirituality to motivate reflection and practical engagement on these
issues. As a more concrete expression of this, it will relate John Wesley s and Pope Francis approaches to holiness in order to see how holiness in fact can promote these issues of the common home, which points to the viability of this relationship in other Christian traditions.

An assessment of the social intent in John Wesley's doctrine of sanctificationSmith, Wayne Peter 11 1900 (has links)
John Wesley was a well educated son of a cleric, who chose to be a theologian and a
minister in the Church of England. His theological distinctive was his insistence on the
possibility of entire sanctification in this lifetime. In response to their position on
sanctification, Wesley and the Methodists sought to save souls and cure the ills in society
because they believed it was divinely mandated. Their love and work for the less
fortunate was a response to their love for God and in obedience to His commandments.
This is the great success of their work. They were able to serve God and their generation
in a balanced yet inseparable way. The result of Wesley's life, direct and indirect, was that
the social and spiritual plight of thousands of individuals and families was improved and
dozens of church groups, missionary societies and benevolent organisations have emerged / Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiology / Th.M. (Church History)

Resurrection of beauty for a postmodern church / ThesisHerbert, Brook Bradshaw. 11 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to re-assert beauty as a fundamental and essential
value within contemporary Christendom as it exists within a postmodern culture.
Once a strong and meaningful concept within Christian belief, beauty has been lost
over the passage of two millennia. This thesis examines the loss of beauty as a
meaningful concept in western Christian belief, and offers a re-evaluation of the
concept particularly within the postmodern world. Drawing together the fundamental
concerns of postmodern society and the contribution that beauty is able to make from
within the Christian context, this thesis demonstrates that "beauty" speaks to
contemporary concerns and meets its deepest needs. Here, beauty, understood as the
relational aspect of forms conceived by God, and offered to humanity as gift, is shown
to overcome the affective sterility that has overtaken western society as an effect of
enlightenment thought. An examination of the concept of beauty, particularly in the
works of Thomas Aquinas, Jonathan Edwards and Gerard Manley Hopkins serves as a
basis to posit a definition of beauty that is consistent with Christian beliefs without
violating its unique content. Tracing the loss of beauty in western Christian thought
and in western culture at large, and recognising the absence of a similar phenomenon
within the Orthodox and Eastern Catholic Churches, suggests that the genius of these
eastern traditions is their refusal to minimise the notion of "mystery" that stands at the
heart of Christian revelation. The western Church then, is called to refocus on the
centrality of the "mystery" inherent in her life. To this end, contemplation is proposed
as the avenue wherein the believer experiences an intimate and transforming encounter with the Triune God which leads to the fruition of unique personhood that increasingly
takes form as the "beauty of holiness." / Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiology / D. Th. (Christian Spirituality)

Previous issue date: 2018-10-19 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / The Holiness is present in the history of the Catholic Church from its earliest days, when the early followers of Christ sought to imitate it through martyrdom. Gradually, the representation of this concept has changed, gaining political elements elaborated by the Church as a form of control and deepening of the institutional relations with each locality. In this sense, the process of canonization of Antônio Galvão de França represents an important landmark for the introduction of Brazil into the universal Catholic scenario. Therefore, the main objective of this work is to analyze the act of beatification and canonization of the first Brazilian saint as a historical process and through him to identify, through his heroic virtues described in the document (canonization process), a new possible approach for this documentation and, at the same time, demonstrate the occurrence of a process of symbolic construction of the memory of sanctity, which involved social groups interested in its promotion to the status of saint, enabling the success of this canonization to promote the "procedural construction of holiness" / A santidade está presente na história da Igreja Católica desde seus primórdios, quando os primeiros seguidores de Cristo procuravam imitá-lo através do martírio.

An overview of the value and effect of an integration of Christian spirituality and ethicsStavridis, Glenn Brian 01 January 2002 (has links)
The modern world is experiencing a spiritual and moral crisis. Associated with this,
Christian spirituality and ethics have become separated in the life of the individual
Christian and the community of the church. The Christian understanding of human beings
and the integrated nature of spirituality and ethics provides a solution to this crisis.
Christian spirituality and morality both originate in the character and purposes of God as
revealed in the biblical record. The value and effects of the. integral relationship between
spirituality and morality can be traced throughout scripture and the history of the church.
The. encounter and relationship with God, in Jesus Christ and through the presence and
power of God's Spirit, transforms the disciple of Christ, which means that spirituality is the
basic framework and motivation for morality. Integrated spiritual and moral formation
creates moral character and moral communities which enable believers to act with love
and justice.

Noutetiese berading van persone met piëtistiese mistastings oor lewensheiligheid / Pieter Abraham RousseauRousseau, Pieter Abraham January 2009 (has links)
In the rich diversity of forms of the Christian Church, there are different perspectives on how believers ought to live holy lives and how their sanctification should progress. As such, the piety and sanctification of Christians entail every facet of our lives and the possibility of misunderstanding is ever present, because humans are fallible and at risk to "work" with the Bible in their own fashion.
A wrong understanding of sin inevitably leads to error as regards piety. Pietism or mutations /forms thereof may therefore stifle, rather than promote real piety coram Deo, in the Christian faith community and in conducting our everyday lives. The aim of the study is, therefore, to advance genuine piety with Christian believers. The doctrine of successive works of grace and the style or approach in which proponents of the doctrine treat Scripture, were critically examined in the first section of the basis-theory. A hermeneutical position from the reformed perspective was stated. The sovereignty of God and the acknowledged authority of Scripture are both the centre and periphery of the reformed perspective, and from a grammatical-historical paradigm augmented by historical-cultural information, the construct of sin in the understanding of the first New Testament audience was examined. The juxtaposed construct of piety, as the logical opposite of sin, was correspondingly explored.
The doctrine of so-called successive works of grace was reviewed analytically in the second phase of the basis-theory and the conclusion was stated that this doctrine is a form of pietism. The usage of Scripture and the terminology utilized by pietistic groupings to establish their doctrine was evaluated from a grammatical-historical point of departure.
The aim of the study was to render pastoral assistance to someone who was, or is involved with the successive works of grace variation of pietism. For this reason, the meta-theoretical facet of the study did not focus on an academic study of sources to explain the phenomenon of pietism, but instead believers' experience of the successive works of grace form of pietism was investigated by means of a narrative empirical study. This investigation took place within the margins of the religious experience of three groups of participants in a church that embraces the particular doctrine. The three categories were believers that advocate the doctrine of successive works of grace, believers that abandoned the same and those that disagree with such a doctrine.
From the basis-theory and the interpretation of the empirical results, an uncomplicated hermeneutical counselling strategy was put together with due emphasis on the correct understanding of Scriptural information on the topics of sin and piety/sanctification. The aim of the strategy is to educate believers from a Scriptural position and perspective on the indicative-imperative aspects of reconciliation and sanctification in Christ.
The perfection of what Jesus has done and our reciprocal faith response is stated and conveyed in the strategy. A model consisting of a number of counselling sessions are suggested to guide believers not to adopt the particular belief or, otherwise, to provide a pastoral, remedial support to assist believers in finding liberation from the doctrine of successive works of grace. / Thesis (Ph.D. (Pastoral)--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2010.
