Nonverbal behaviour in the process of the therapeutic interview : an ecosystemic perspective

Scott, Sybil 11 1900 (has links)
Communication can be divied into two broad areas namely, the verbal and nonverbal levels. While attention has been paid to nonverbal communication in the literature, few studies address the nonverbal communication that takes place in the natural setting of a therapeutic session. The present study provides such a naturalistic study, where the verbal content of actual therapy sessions are integrated with the nonverbal content to yield a holistic view of the session. An ecosystemic epistemology is adopted in this study, and represents a move away from more traditional approaches to nonverbal behaviour which are largely confined to a positivistic framework of thought and design. Symlog Interaction Scoring is employed as a practical method of assisting observers in distinguishing nonverbal behaviours, which are usually perceived unconsciously, and lifting them into consciousness, allowing this infonnation to be integrated with the meanings and hypotheses generated during therapy. By deliberately including descriptions of nonverbal behaviour, the descriptions of therapy were broadened, thereby providing a more holistic approach to therapy. / Psychology / M.A. (Clinical Psychology)

Friberg, Sofie, Johansson, Josefine, Olsson, Angelica January 2018 (has links)
Due to the increased number of older people the population structure will change in many parts of the world, which increases the need of health promotive projects.  It is important that these interventions is based on pedagogical strategies and gets adapted to the expectations and experiences of the elderly to get good results. The aim of this study was, based on a health educational perspective, highlight a health promotion project directed at the elderly. The concepts that was used to analyze and interpret the results were physical literacy and holistic perspective. This study was based on a qualitative onset where one group interview and two focusgroup interviews where used as a method for data collection. The sample consisted three project leaders and ten participants of a health promotion project. The result was analyzed from a conventional qualitative content analysis. The health educational ideas of the project was to promote increased knowledge, increase physical and psychological health and to promote independence. No. of bitstreams: 1 5934.pdf: 49332420 bytes, checksum: e5178b9bf68401e64db5106ee1ede9d4 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2013-03-25 / Despite the process of S&OP (Sales and Operations Planning) is not a new practice in enterprises, especially those of large size, it still deficiency studies in their practices and computational tools support. This happens because it is a complex process where the majority of the representatives managerial of organizational functions participating in the execution, with each trying to contribute to define a coordinated plan of actions for a period of short, medium and long term. Computational models and tools focused to aid the process of S & OP are used and can contribute to improving the quality of its implementation and results. The most common tools are those based on spreadsheets, whose content is generated through the expertise of the decision makers, and more sophisticated techniques are based on techniques of the operational research inserted in Advanced Planning Systems (APS), whose analytical models seek to generate optimized plans. From the literature review on the computational techniques used to aid the S&OP process, was identified the lack of studies related to the use of System Dynamics. Additionally, the review indicates the need for studies related to the integration of economic and financial analysis during the preparation of aggregates plans and the use of probabilistic variables in the process enabling the statistical analysis in order to provide plans more realistic. Another relevant issue observed is that managers involved in the process S&OP does not always have a global vision of all variables and constraints involved in this process, so it is also observed that the techniques and tools used to implement the S&OP process does not provide a holistic view of activities and variables involved. Thus, the aim of this work is to develop a simulation model of System Dynamics which provides a holistic vision for the S&OP process, allowing the integration of finance processes and the use of probabilistic variables. The research method used was based on a qualitative and quantitative approach procedure with modeling / simulation. Thus, the aim of the research is to develop a simulation model of System Dynamics to assist the S & OP process. The research method used was based on a qualitative and quantitative approach with modeling / simulation procedure. The simulation model based on the methodology of system dynamics for the S & OP process was developed and analyzed in illustrative cases, performed in two companies with feature make to stock (MTS). Simulations of illustrative cases were conducted by a design of experiment (DOE) to select and evaluate a set of scenarios, determining the best scenario and checking the adequacy with practice of companies. A evaluation of the use and results of simulations in both cases shows that the system dynamics model improves the understanding of the managements on all activities involved in the S&OP process, as well provides a holistic view of all areas involved. The simulations provides compatible plans compared with business practice, with the advantage of dealing with economic and financial analysis simultaneously and allow the generation of numerous scenarios of S&OP plans.

O desenvolvimento profissional corresponsável na formacão de professores de língua materna à luz da teoria holística da atividade / The co-responsible professional development in first language teaching formation in light of the holistic activity theory

Kist, Liane Batistela 15 February 2017 (has links)
This study investigates the Co-responsible Professional Development (DPC, in Portuguese), in first language teachers’ formation (LM teachers, in Portuguese) based on the Holistic Activity Theory (THA, in Portuguese). The DPC is a triadic conception of professionalization that articulates, based on alliance and reciprocal confidence, three contexts: Academy, Graduation and Market. The DPC is one of the basic concepts of THA studied by Richter (2011) which pattern concerns on the inseparability among conduct, concept and quality in the professional practice, ordered in a systemic way through a set of criteria that are the basis of the parameterization of a specialized job in an autopoietic horizon, denominated as framework. The development of the investigation starts out from an analysis from an excerpt of the activity report of the Portuguese Language Course Subproject that integrates the Institutional Scholarship Program of Introduction to Teaching First Language (PIBID/Português, in Portuguese). Owing that, to implement a DPC, a professional alliance is necessary based on a link of confidence and on the adoption of a paradigm of consensual work (framework) between initial and in-service capacitation, this study begins by analyzing the PIBID/Português as a formative model able to anchor the necessary elements to the professional development of first language teachers. Through a case study within the scope of qualitative research and using the indiciary paradigm from GINZBURG (1989), it is possible to say, in a general way, that PIBID/Português revealed itself as a formative referential with a strong tendency to anchor a DPC and its developments: principles of job framework founded by the DPC, absence of problems in the framework interfaces, setting up as a consequence of the absence of deviation in the means and relations with the socio-interacionist paradigm in the conceptual field of first language, which are revealers of what THA denominates as overcoming akrasia. In other words, this study brings out some positive aspects concerning the inseparability between conduct, concept and value in a triadic situation of professionalization.

Holistický přístup při poskytování ošetřovatelské péče u zdravotně postižených dětí ve zdravotně sociálních zařízeních / Holistic approach in providing nursing care for disabled children in the health and social facilities.

GUIDOVÁ, Hana January 2011 (has links)
Holistic nursing care requires body and psyche orientation. That means it stresses both, body and psychosocial human needs. It is necessary for nurses to understand the principle of psychosocial interaction and care of the whole person including his/her dearest in health and illness. The aim of the thesis ?Holistic approach in providing nursing care to handicapped children in health & social facilities? was to find out how the needs of handicapped children are satisfied in health & social facilities from the point of view of holistic approach. The work involved both, qualitative and quantitative research. 104 nurses filled in a questionnaire and 10 respondents were observed within the quantitative research. Two hypotheses were set. The first hypothesis was focused on handicapped children in health & social facilities and on satisfaction of their needs from the point of view of holistic theory. Most of the nurses are convinced that they are providing holistic care. However on the other hand a lot of nurses answered that they preferred provision of physiological needs to psychosocial needs. This finding does not fully confirm the holistic approach in providing nursing care. The second hypothesis says that nurses provide more holistic care in non-profit making facilities than in those operated by regional authorities. Non-profit making facilities could not be included in the research as nurses are not employed there and those who work there work at the positions of social workers and caregivers, not at the positions of nurses. Comparison was only performed at facilities operated by private limited companies and the regional authority. The research also compared the approach to holistic nursing care between head nurses and ward sisters and nurses working on shifts. The nurse managers answered more positively than the nurses working on shifts. A nurse providing holistic care sees a human as a unique complex being, not as its single parts. Such a nurse is ready to help people achieve and maintain optimal health, helps in prevention and reduction of diseases and provides support to those incurably ill. It is important to realize that body and psyche are closely linked, not separated. This thesis may be used by nurses working with handicapped children in health & social facilities. Elaboration of a standard for holistic nursing care for handicapped children in health & social facilities is the practical output of the thesis.

Health Professions Advisors: Perceptions of the Health Professions Advising Community Regarding Factors Important to the Selection of Students for Medical School.

January 2012 (has links)
abstract: This study determined if differences exist among the health professions advising community between factors (academic and non-academic) used as selection criteria in medical school admissions, as well as the impact of the holistic review in admissions on new admissions initiatives with respect to personal and professional backgrounds of advisors. The study examined the differences based on the gender, race and ethnicity, age, years of advising experience, institution size and type, classification and region of the population. Statistical analyses were conducted using comparison of means tests: one-sample t-tests and one-way ANOVA to determine the significance of differences for each of the variables. Significant differences were found to exist among the health professions advising community based on gender, race and ethnicity, institution type, classification of appointment, institution size and type. The findings of the study suggested that the personal and professional background of a health professions advisor did impact the perception of importance among the academic and non-academic factors used in the selection of medical students. The medical school admissions community should appreciate the unique viewpoints of the broader health professions advising community when building relationships and finding opportunities to collaborate. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ed.D. Using the holistic approach in management: a interpretives study of managerial practices of \'novo mercado\' members of securities, commodities and futures exchange of San Pablo - BM&FBovespa - Brazil

Crounel Marins 10 April 2015 (has links)
This thesis aimed to identify evidence of a holistic approach in the managerial practices of companies, contribute to the construction of a model with holistic characteristics to guide the design of managerial practices, and classify companies in regards to the the institutionalization stage of the use of elements of holistic approach in their practices. Holism has ancient roots, but its modern meaning was defined by South African thinker and statesman J.C. Smuts, in his book Holism and Evolution, published in 1926. Smuts considers holism as a factor that guides the evolution of the entire universe, with the formation of structures that can only be properly treated as wholes , in a sequence which starts with matter and life, continues through human personality, and finally reaches supra-individual organizations and human value systems. In epistemological terms, holism opposes reductionism, be it in Natural Sciences (atomism), and in Social Sciences (individualism). After Smuts, several authors explored holism, such as Quine (1951), Weil (1991), Esfeld (2001) and Descombes (2014). In regards to Administration, Savory (1999) approaches holism with particular focus on environmental issues. In Brazil, Almada et al (2004), Aligleri et al (2008), Cunha e Corrêa (2010), among others, with focus in different administrative activities, have made allusions which explore holistic approaches in management, such as viewing the companies as totalities, as well as the connections between those totalities. This qualitative, exploratory and descriptive research utilized an interpretative approach, which helped the researcher understand a reality which contains objective as well as subjective aspects. Twenty companies were researched, chosen randomly among companies within the Novo Mercado segment of the BM&F Bovespa (São Paulo Stock Exchange), which has strict corporate rules. Data was collected in the companies\' annual reports and other documents available in the companies\' websites. Information collected was not restricted to general data about the companies, but also included managerial practices, sustainability and corporate and social responsibility. The Theory of Institutionalization provided criteria to classify companies, in various stages of institutionalization, in regards to the use of holistic approach in their practices. In order to obtain this classification, it was necessary to build a model, or prototype for holistic evaluation, as no such model had been found in previous studies. This prototype, the first result of the research, was built through comparisons between holistic principles, taken from the work of Smuts, with the Theory of Systems, the Theory of Cybernetics and Complexity, and the Theory of Stakeholders. After careful analysis of the companies\' practices, the research suggests that future studies should include an evaluation of the companies\' holistic approach of their activities and social endeavors. Also observed were different evolution mechanisms and factors that could limit this evolution. Finally, it was possible to present, based on deductions on data and theories, a hypothesis to be tested that companies can benefit by utilizing holistic approach in their practices. This study fills an important void in modern business theories, helping companies deal with a complex world using rational tools, which do not harm the complexity of the holistic nature of reality.

A Holistic Understanding of Domestic Democratic Peace

Graetsch, Jessica January 2012 (has links)
In this study the notion of domestic democratic peace will be examined by using a holistic understanding of internal conflicts. Domestic democratic peace has most commonly been studied by using quantitative methods. This study will be qualitative using an abductive approach when understanding why mature democracies are more stable than other types of regimes. The holistic understanding of internal conflicts used in this study is based on the concepts of relative deprivation, instrumentalisation of politics and politicisation of identity. Burton’s sources of conflict are used to show how relative deprivation can be experienced. The questions to be answered in this essay are as follow: How can the proposed holistic understanding explain why mature democracies are more stable than newly established democracies and autocratic states? In what ways do mature democracies decrease experience of relative deprivation and thereby safeguarding Burton’s sources of conflict? In what ways do mature democracies cater to a more peaceful process of politicisation of identity and instrumentalisation of politics?
