Desenvolvimento de Neomegalotomus parvus (Westwood, 1842) (Hemiptera: Alydidae) em planta alimentícia alternativa, Macroptilium atropurpureum Urb. (Leguminosae: Papilionoideae), em laboratório. / Development of Neomegalotomus parvus (Westwood, 1842) (Hemiptera: Alydidae) on a new food plant, Macroptilium atropurpureum Urb. (Leguminosae: Papilionoideae), in Alagoas, Brazil.

Dantas Júnior, ângelo Márcio Menezes 23 October 2009 (has links)
Neomegalotomus parvus (Westwood, 1842) (Hemiptera: Alydidae) is distributed in the neotropical region from Mexico to northern Argentina and Caribbean. In Brazil it has been reported in soybean and bean in the Cerrado biome. This species is known as " broad-headed bugs" because the nymphs mimic ants. the attack of this bug can transmit the fungus Nematospora coryles Peglion, which causes the "blight-yeast" disease which reduces the quality and crop yield. Macroptilium atropurpureum Urb (Leguminosae: Papilionoideae) is a leguminous plant, herbaceous and climbing, popularly known as siratro. Originally from Mexico, it was introduced in Brazil to be cultivated in association with grasses. However, due to the lack of control, it has become an invasive plant. In the field, the bugs were collected in M. atropurpureum in a vacant lot in the city of Maceió, Alagoas State (9°40'11.7"/S and 35°44'38.8"/W). We obtained 32 eggs and, after hatching, nimphs were isolated in containers made with 2 L PET bottles with 300mL final volume. And food (branches with green pods), wich was changed every three days. The N. parvus stadiums length in days, were [mean ± standard error, total amplitude (min-max), coefficient of variation (CV)]: embryonic period= 8.9 ± 0.2, 3(7-10) days, CV=11.4%; N1= 2.5 ± 0.1, 1(2-3) days, CV=20.4%; N2=5.2 ± 0.4, 8(4-12) days, CV= 35.0%; N3=3.9 ± 0.2, 3(3-6) days, CV=21.3%; N4= 4.6 ± 0.2, 3(4-7) days, CV= 19.4%; N5=9.7 ± 0.6, 9(5-14) days, CV=31.3%. The total development was 34.9 ± 0.8, 12 (28-40) days, CV=11.0%. The sex ratio was 0.5 indicating a balance between sexes. The viability of eggs was 100% and mortality during development was 31.2%. This performance with obtaining viable adults indicates that M. atropurpureum can be considered as an alternative plant-food.

Interação do algodoeiro BT submetido ao estresse hídrico e Alabama argillacea (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) / Interaction to BT cotton submety and stress and Alabama argillacea (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)

Lima, Mauricio Silva de 31 March 2010 (has links)
The genetically modified cotton to produce toxins from the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) has the objective of offering plant resistance against lepidopteran larvae. The cotton crop cultivated in the Semiarid region can be subjected to the condition of water stress. Thus, this work investigated the expression of the Cry1Ac toxin in two varieties of Bt-cotton Acala 90B and NuOpal cultivated under the conditions of irrigated and water stress. In addition, the oviposition and feeding preference of adults and larvae of the cotton leafworm, Alabama Argillacea (Hübner), caged on these plants were studied. Cotton plants were cultivated under controlled conditions of irrigation to obtain water stress treatment in microparcels inside an open-sided greenhouse. Higher levels of Cry1Ac expression was found on top leaves of Bt-cotton for both varieties under water stress condition, and similar levels between plants with and without water stress in the other plant parts such as bracts, flower petals, and boll. Adults of A. argillacea did not exhibited preference for oviposition between Bt and non-Bt cotton plants. Likewise, 3- and 10-d-old A. argillacea larvae did not show food preference under a choice test comparing leaves of non-Bt and Bt-cotton plants. Otherwise, adults of A. argillacea showed lower oviposition on plants under water stress, and their larvae did not complete development fed non-Bt varieties cultivated under water stress condition. These results indicated that adults and larvae of A. argillacae do not recognize Bt-cotton plants to lay eggs and to feed, respectively. Further, cotton plants under water stress showed greater Cry1Ac toxin concentration on top leaves, interfered with the oviposition of A. argillacea irrespective of plant genotypes Bt and non-Bt, and with the larval development on non-Bt plants.

Cotton, Gossypium spp., stands out as an important source of renewable resources, producing the most consumed vegetal fiber by the world textile industry. For most cotton producing countries, the attack of pest insects, such as the aphid Aphis gossypii Glover (Hemiptera: Aphididae), is considered one of the main productivity reducing factors in the crop. This insect can cause direct damages to cotton plants through of the continuous sucking of sap as well as indirect damages by favoring sooty mold and transmitting the virus. The control of this aphid has been done mainly through successive applications of insecticides, which have accelerated the selection of populations that are resistant to the active ingredients. Among the alternative strategies of the chemical management, the utilization of resistant cultivars is considered valuable for integrated pest management (IPM). The purpose of this work was characterize possible resistance categories of cotton genotypes against an attack of the aphid A. gossypii through greenhouse and laboratory assays. Initially, a screening was carried out with 78 cotton genotypes, and 15 materials were selected for infestation ability assays and determination of the cumulative aphid-day number (CAD). Posteriorly, these selected genotypes were also evaluated by antixenosis assays and antibiosis. In the last step, an assay with EPG (Electrical Penetration Graph) was carried out using four cotton carrier genotypes from different resistance categories besides the chemical analysis of tannins of these materials to establish correlations. In the infestation ability assay, genotypes G. hirsutum punctatum, IAC PV010-1664 and Acala 4-42 were the least colonized ones, indicating the occurrence of antixenosis and/or antibiosis. Based on the antixenosis assay, genotypes Deltapine Smooth Leaf (7.82 aphids) and Variedade Reba= BTK-12 (8.54 aphids) were significantly less infested, indicating the expression of antixenose on A. gossypii. In the antibiosis assay, G. arboreum 1 showed the lowest averages for total number of nymphs (27.11 individuals), nymphs per adult/day (1.44 individuals) and nymphs at 10 days (18.63 individuals), besides reducing the reproductive periods (19.84 days), the nymphal viability (79.17%), the adult longevity (26.68 days) and the nymph-adult period of A. gossypii (5.68 days), suggesting high levels of resistance by antibiosis and/or antixenosis. In FM 910 the number of produced nymphs per day and at 10 days was decreased, which also show resistance expression. For the assay with EPG, it was verified that aphids confined to the FM 910 genotype required a longer time (10.94%) until the beginning of the phloem ingestion phase, suggesting the presence of antioxenotic factors. In Deltapine Smooth Leaf, the aphids presented longer time in the non-probing phase and shorter periods in the first phloematic vessel and E2 ingestion, indicating the expression of antixenosis and/or antibiosis. The chemical analysis presented higher concentration of tannins in Deltapine Smooth Leaf leaves in relation to the others, suggesting that these compounds may have acted as chemical resistance factors, reducing the aphid feeding time on the vessels of this genotype phloem. The resistance of G. arboreum 1 is probably more related to the expression of antibiosis, since the aphid fed on the vessels of this material similarly to the one observed in FMT 707 susceptible genotype. The results obtained in this study can be explored in breeding programs to develop A. gossypii-resistant cotton genotypes. / CNPq: 141953/2014-4

Biodiversidade de mosca-das-frutas do gênero Anastrepha (Diptera, Tephritidae) no campus Luiz de Queiroz, Piracicaba, São Paulo. / Biodiversity of anastrepha fruit flies (dip., tephritidae) on the luizde queirozcampus, Piracicaba, São Paulo.

Keiko Uramoto 12 July 2002 (has links)
A. pseudoparallela e A. serpentina infestaram exclusivamente Passifloraceae e Sapotaceae, respectivamente. / This study was conducted in the Luiz de Queiroz campus of the Universidade de São Paulo, in Piracicaba, state of São Paulo. The aim of this study was to determine the number of species in the genus Anastrepha Schiner on campus, their distribution and the quantitative analysis of the population. Moreover, this study correlated populational fluctuations with biotic and abiotic factors as well as the association between host plant species and the Anastrepha species in that area. A total of 23,263 females of Anastrepha collected in MacPhail traps was examined, and 18 species belonging to nine infrageneric groups were registered. The distribution of females per trap was strongly clustered, with 5 traps (6%) capturing 50% of the total of females. Only A. fraterculus (Wiedemann) and A. obliqua (Macquart) were considered dominant species. A. fraterculus was by far the most frequent species, representing 80.2% of the total of females captured on campus, and the most constant, occurring in 98.04% of the analyzed samples. In decreasing order of frequency, A. obliqua (12.6%), A. pseudoparallela (Loew) (3.1%), and A. bistrigata Bezzi (2.1%) comprised the other major species. The remaining species showed frequency lower than 1%. The high value of the Simpson’s index (0.66) as wel as the low values of Shannon’s index (0.7521) and the equitability index (0.459) resulted from the high frequency of A. fraterculus. The populational level of Anastrepha increased from August to November with the highest peak in September. The availability of host fruit, more than climatic parameters determined most of the variation of population size in the most abundant species of Anastrepha. A total of 565 fruit samples representing at least 25 plant species from 11 families was collected in 47 capture sites. 10,290 females were identified. Of the 18 Anastrepha species captured in traps, only 6 also emerged from fruit samples: A. bistrigata Bezzi, A. fraterculus (Wiedemann), A. obliqua (Macquart), A. pseudoparallela (Loew), A. serpentina (Wiedemann) e A. sororcula Zucchi. A. fraterculus infested the greatest diversity of hosts. The preferred hosts of A. obliqua were plant species in the family Anacardiaceae. A. pseudoparallela and A. serpentina infested only species in the families Passifloraceae and Sapotaceae, respectively. A new fruit fly and host plant association was registered: A. fraterculus with Syagrus romanzoffiana (Cham.) Glassman (queen palm). The association of A. fraterculus with Manilkara zapota L. (sapodilla) was reported here for the first time in Brazil.

Marcos Barros de Medeiros 25 September 2002 (has links)
This study was conducted to evaluate interactions between host plants and the effect of biofertilizers on Brevipalpits phoeiiicis (Geijskes) bioecology. The residual and systemic effects of biofertilizer mjxtures sprayed on Canavalia ensiformis (L.) DC. plants on the bioecology parameters were firstly evaluated. For the residual effect bioassay the following treaúnents were tested: a) Distilled water (Control); b) Biofert biofertilizer produced in a single bioreactor; e) Biomix - a mix of biofertilizers produced in four bioreactors; and d) Bio+VL - Biofei-t, + Verticilliuin lecanii (Zimm.) Viégas. For tbe systemic effect bloassay two stispensions were tested: a) Biofert and b) Distilled water (Control). Thereafter the topical and residual interaction effects between concentrations of the biofertilizer and C. ensiformis and Ligustrum lucidum Aiton. Host plants were evaluated. Were also characterized pathological manifestations in the dead mites by using seanning electronic microscopy images. Adverse effects of biofertilizers on both survival and oviposition parameters were verified. The net reproduction rates (Ro) were 18.09; 12.92; 12.52 and 10.52 female/female (residual effect) and 19.42 and 13.00 female/female (systemic effect), respectively, for the treatments in the above mentioned orders. The results showed that the biofertilizers reduced the potential population growth of B. phoenicis in the residual and in the systemie effect assays. The biofertilizer demonstrated deleterious effect on fertility and survival of R. phoenicis on both host plants, mostly on C ens@formis. The mites dead by biofertilizer action showed evidences of microbial colonization. A colloidal coinpound of biofertilizer induced mite immobilization and obstruction in its digestivo tract. The interaction between host plant and biofertilizer deleterious effects will contribute to enhance mite management based on trophobiotic relationships.

Bioécologie et diversité génétique d'Orthops palus (Heteroptera, Miridae), ravageur du manguier à La Réunion / No English title available

Atiama, Morguen 31 March 2016 (has links)
Mango crops in Reunion Island are threatened by a series of pests, including the bug Orthops palus (Heteroptera, Miridae). This species has only been reported in Uganda and Reunion Island but is considered pest of mango only in Reunion Island. Few studies have therefore been devoted to this bug, which explains the lack of knowledge concerning this pest. The overall aim of my thesis was to acquire knowledge about O. palus, and several specific objectives were pursued. The first was to characterize mirid diversity in the mango orchards of Reunion Island. The second was to characterize the life cycle of O. palus and insect-plant interactions. The third objective was to study the distribution and genetic diversity of the species in Reunion Island and on other islands in the south-west Indian Ocean (SWIO).The main results of these studies are: among the 13 species identified in the community of mirids in mango orchards, O. palus was the most abundant on the mango inflorescences when in flower. Three original tools were built to identify O. palus in the laboratory and to recognize the species in the field: an identification key, COI sequences, and a field recognition card). A method was developed to rear O. palus, which enabled the characterization of its life cycle and the length of the development stages. Meanwhile, the inventory of in situ host plants (15 species in Reunion Island) showed that O. palus is polyphagous. Studies of the diversity and genetic structure of O. palus in SWIO islands also provided significant results. In Reunion Island, the population is structured in two clusters, although the structural factors could not be fully identified. In Mauritius, one cluster was identified and was shown to be different from the clusters in Reunion Island. No host race was found either in Reunion Island or in Mauritius. Population movements in both directions between the two islands were highlighted. Finally, the analysis of the mitochondrial DNA diversity of individuals sampled on four SWIO islands (Reunion, Mauritius, Mayotte, Grande Comore) revealed the presence of at least seven haplotypes whose distribution confirmed exchanges between islands. The dynamics of O. palus in space and over time are discussed in connection with its survival strategy over the course of the year and with population flows across SWIO. The results showed that beyond being a bug that attacks only the mango tree, as the name strongly suggests, O. palus is rather a "flower bug" likely to maintain populations throughout the year by moving from one flowering plant to another according to food availability. Among the plants involved in the annual dynamics of the insect, several species beside mango are of economic interest (lychee, jujube, avocado). Several research topics are proposed to complete the knowledge already acquired on O. palus, including understanding of population dispersion processes at the scale of the agro-ecosystem, and evaluating the presence and the genetic diversity of O. palus in other SWOI territories. Finally, agroecological practices for the local management of O. palus populations are proposed based on the results of the studies that comprise the present dissertation. Recommendations are made for precautionary measures to prevent the flow of O. palus populations between countries located in the Indian Ocean.

<b>Developing Sustainable Carrot Weevil Management Informed by Genetic and Behavioral Studies of Populations in the Great Lakes Region of the United States</b>

Emily J Justus (17583957) 09 December 2023 (has links)
<p dir="ltr">Specialty crop growers in the Great Lakes region of the United States and Canada have been struggling for decades to manage the carrot weevil (<i>Listronotus oregonensis</i>). In carrot, parsley, and celery production, growers may experience 40-100% yield loss, despite the intensive use of insecticides (Boivin, 1999; Jasinski, 2008; Telfer et al., 2019). To improve sustainable management of this native pest in commercial vegetable production, we must address existing knowledge gaps in carrot weevil mate-finding behavior, population genetic diversity and gene flow, and grower adoption and efficacy of integrated pest management (IPM) strategies, like cultivar selection, to combat this pest. To date, these factors have not been evaluated in the carrot weevil system, yet together they have significant implications for developing novel monitoring tools, grower decision making, and the potential evolution of insecticide resistance in this damaging pest.</p><p dir="ltr">To address knowledge gaps in grower adoption and the efficacy of IPM strategies, such as cultivar selection, I investigated the influence of carrot cultivar on the oviposition preference of carrot weevil in the laboratory and quantified the diversity of insect assemblages on carrots in Ohio and Indiana. In tandem, I delivered an online survey to specialty crop growers in Indiana and Ohio to measure their knowledge and use of insect-resistant cultivars as a part of an IPM strategy. I found that carrot cultivar did not impact carrot weevil oviposition preference, but rather the number of petiole trichomes was positively correlated with the cumulative number of egg scars found on a given carrot cultivar. Similarly, cultivar did not influence the diversity of insect assemblages associated with carrot foliage, but hemipterans were the dominant group found across cultivars. Moreover, insect diversity across all carrot cultivars was high, with Shannon-Weiner diversity indices ranging from 2.14 to 2.45.</p><p dir="ltr">I analyzed survey responses from vegetable growers regarding their knowledge, current use, and future use of insect-resistant cultivars and found no significant differences between conventional or organic growers, in either Indiana or Ohio, or across experience levels regarding their knowledge and current or future use of insect-resistant cultivars. Although a greater number of organic growers were aware of insect-resistant cultivars, they were not incorporated into their IPM plans. In contrast, half of responding conventional growers indicated implementing insect-resistant cultivars in current IPM plans. Growers indicated that more information about the efficacy, costs, and benefits of insect-resistant vegetable cultivars would be most helpful in informing their decision to incorporate this IPM tactic on their farms.</p><p dir="ltr">To address knowledge gaps regarding carrot weevil mate-finding behavior, I investigated behavioral response to conspecific frass using Y-tube bioassays and the volatiles of frass samples were analyzed using gas-chromatography mass-spectrometry (GC-MS) as starting points to assess the presence of volatile chemical cues that might function as sex or aggregation pheromones. I found that male and female weevils oriented strongly towards volatiles from male frass. However, conspecifics were not attracted to mixed or female frass, suggesting male frass contains behaviorally relevant chemical cues that are unique or present in greater abundance than in female frass. When I analyzed the chemical abundance and composition of the male frass volatiles, I found 16 common compounds across all samples and no compounds were unique to the male volatile blend. Specifically, (1S)-6,6-dimethyl-2-methylene-Bicyclo[3.1.1]heptane and (1R)-2,6,6-Trimethylbicyclo[3.1.1]hept-2-ene were present in significantly higher abundance in extracts of males frass compared to those of female frass.</p><p dir="ltr">Finally, to address knowledge gaps in the genetic diversity and gene flow of carrot weevil populations in the Great Lakes Region of the U. S., I used single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) to compare genetic diversity and structure of agricultural populations of carrot weevil in Michigan and Ohio. I found limited genetic differentiation between three carrot weevil populations collected from celery and parsley fields located in Michigan and Ohio. I also found high inbreeding coefficients and heterozygote deficiency in all populations, suggesting that all carrot weevil populations are locally confined. These results suggest significant gene flow between populations, which has implications for management, specifically the mitigation and management of insecticide resistance.</p><p dir="ltr">Together, the results from my dissertation can be applied to the improvement of carrot weevil IPM across the Great Lakes region of the United States and Canada. Further investigations into the impact of physical characteristics, specifically petiole trichomes, on carrot weevil oviposition behavior can inform the breeding and development of resistant carrot cultivars. Results from my behavioral bioassay studies represent a critical first step towards the identification of an aggregation or sex pheromone, which would greatly improve detection of resident carrot weevil populations when used in conjunction with current monitoring traps. My results also suggest that monitoring and mitigation of insecticide resistance in carrot weevil populations should be considered at the regional scale, at minimum, with significant gene flow between carrot weevil populations within the Great Lakes Region.</p>

Evolutionary and mechanistic aspects of insect host plant preference

Schäpers, Alexander January 2016 (has links)
Plant feeding insects comprise about 25% of all animal species on earth and play an important role in all ecosystems. Although we understand that their association with plants is a key-factor driving the diversification in this group, we still have large gaps in our knowledge of the underlying processes of this relationship. Female choice of host plant is an important event in the insect life-cycle, as it is a major determinant of the larval food plant. In this Thesis I studied different aspects of insect host plant choice and used butterflies from the family Nymphalidae as my study system. I found that butterflies have a well developed olfactory system and that they use odors when searching for food or host plants. However, the information obtained from the odor of host plants does not seem to be sufficient for the studied species to make a distinction between plants of different qualities. Interestingly, even when in full contact with the leaf they do not make optimal decisions. I show for example that a sub-optimal female choice may be mitigated by larval ability to cope with unfavorable situations. Moreover, species that utilize a broader set of host plants may not be very well adapted to all the hosts they use, but at the same time they may survive in areas where there is only a subset of the plants available. Lastly, differences in the evolution of life-history traits between species can account for differences in how each species realizes its lifestyle. Thus, by incorporating findings on mechanisms of host plant choice with the ecological and evolutionary context of a species, our ability to explain the dynamics of host plant choice and insect-plant interactions can be improved. / <p>At the time of the doctoral defense, the following paper was unpublished and had a status as follows: Paper 4: Manuscript.</p>

Campos, Aniele Pianoscki. January 2009 (has links)
E. Smith, 1797) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) by non-oviposition and non-feeding preference (tests choice and no-choice) and antibiosis. The experiments were conducted in laboratory under controlled conditions of temperature (25 ± 2°C), humidity (60 ± 10%) and photophase (12 hours). Peanut cultivars of upright growth habit (IAC 5, IAC 8112, IAC 22 and IAC Tatu ST) and runner growth habit (IAC 503, IAC 505, IAC 147, IAC 125, IAC Caiapó and IAC Runner 886) were evaluated. These cultivars were evaluated separately due to the material growth habit in all tests. Tests of non-oviposition preference were conducted with newly emerged adults, and they were fed with a 10% honey solution, remaining in the cages for four days until the start of evaluations. Evaluations consisted of quantifying the eggs and egg masses numbers, followed by calculation the number of eggs per egg masses. To perform non-feeding preference tests, leaves discs from different cultivars were placed in disposable Petri dishes followed by releasing of a third instar caterpillar for each cultivar. The attractiveness at 1; 5; 10; 15; 30; 60; 120; 360; 720 and 1,440 minutes was evaluated by counting the caterpillars number which were fed on cultivars, quantified the leaf area consumed by cultivar was evaluated at the end of the experiment. Additionally, identification of peanuts cultivars resistance to S. frugiperda, and the resistance degree was evaluated by multivariate analysis of the antibiosis test. The cultivars were planted in plots on the field. First instar larvae were placed individually in disposable Petri dishes plates, over a moistened filter paper. New leaflets were provided every day. The duration (days), weight (mg) and viability... (Complete abstract click electronic access below) / Mestre
