Body mapping as an exploratory tool to enhance dialogue of life experiences with adolescent boys in a special youth centre

Pienaar, Marinda 11 1900 (has links)
This qualitative study explored the use of Body Mapping as a tool to enhance dialogue with sentenced adolescent boys in a Special Youth Centre. Their scars and tattoos were regarded as the key to unlocking their life stories. Body maps and unstructured interviews formed the main body of data. The paradigms of both Gestalt- and occupational therapy formed the basis of the conceptual framework and a literature control was done as “theory after” as well as a method of data triangulation. Themes extracted pointed to broken bonds and familial trauma which lead the adolescents to search for belonging and mastery in deviant peer groups and street- and Numbergangs. The tattoos provide graphic affirmation of identification and belonging to these groups. The mapping of their lesions and scars provided the opportunity to relate traumatic experiences. Conclusions were drawn and recommendations could be made as a result of the study. / Social Work / M. Diac. (Play Therapy)

Candau, Noëmie 12 1900 (has links)
Like other cities, Montreal is facing global warming and increasing urbanization. As a result, heat waves intensify to the point of becoming a serious public health issue causing discomfort and death among city dwellers. Current measures to mitigate heat islands include greening and spraying water. The latter is particularly critical in the local context: Montreal has become an impervious island gradually disconnecting from its rivers and streams, losing a valuable heritage. The design of water features—like fountains, ponds, water games—could follow policies aimed at adapting to climate change and improving pedestrian environments. However, currently offered water features do not all meet the needs of users, notably in terms of universal accessibility criteria. This study will adopt a user-centred industrial design perspective to better understand how water features can foster positive and inclusive experiences among urban dwellers. We will set our ideas of design and experience by adopting a phenomenological and constructivist approach, using concepts of aesthetic experience and habitability. We will analyze our main subject according to the concept of the Human Scale City developed by architect Jan Gehl and adopted by the city of Montreal. This theoretical corpus will help us understand the contextual, social and sensory characteristics of urban water features. First, a literature review will reveal how the historical evolution of functions and uses related to water features influences their design and popularity nowadays. Then, we will observe and compare two modern fountains to induce which qualities foster their success. In this aim, we will analyze the results of the observations on three scales: 1) the contextual and socio-cultural environment of the neighborhood, 2) the integration to the surrounding built environment, and 3) the users and their interactions with the water feature. Our main goal is to study the urban experience of water and demonstrate the relevance of the design approach to tackle the modern city challenges. Thus, we hope to sensitize the various actors involved in the implementation of urban water features, and more broadly contribute to the corpus on the impact of the design on the public space.

Návrh udržitelné městské struktury 21.století v rámci České republiky / Design of sustainable urban structure of the 21st century in the Czech Republic

Gladiš, Filip January 2020 (has links)
The project focuses on the design of a sustainable urban structure in the southeastern part of an area called Červený kopec, in the land of former brick factory. This urban-planning study endeavors to create a suitable structure for the brick factory brownfield. There are relevant factors which influence the proposal, such as complicated terrain due to the mining history, inconsistency of the surrounding urban structure, improper traffic accessibility, and orientation towards the city centre. The concept is based on the legacy of the area. It builds on the slopes and steep hills and preserves two building of the old factory, which aims to become the centre of the whole area. It is also important to mention the nearby National Landscape Heritage Červený Kopec, which would be connected via a forest-park to the recreational area of Mahenova stráň. The outline of this park creates a soft partition between the city and the park. The whole area is accessible by traffic from three access points, one of which is a newly constructed crossroad with traffic lights connected to the street Jihlavská. This proposal emphasizes the effectivity of the land use, traffic hierarchy, human scale, and the importance of pedestrian movement. The area is characterized by central design, with the ethos of the brick factory. It creates a cultural centre for the whole district and sets the way for new development or restructuralization towards a sustainable future for the city of Brno.

De offentliga rummens betydelse för livet i staden : En fallstudie av stadsdelen Eriksberg / The meaning of public spaces for city life : A case study of the neighbourhood Eriksberg

Edwin, Björkefall January 2015 (has links)
Public spaces have through history formed an important function as meeting places for people living in the city. According to some critics, the prevailing planning ideals during the era of the Modernism neglected these functions, thus creating neighbourhoods characterised by low interaction among the citizens. Present urban planning is once again appreciating the value of creating vibrant and liveable neighbourhoods with a human scale in mind. Given the high development pressure in Sweden and around the world has however entailed great challenges for the urban planning practise, which in some cases seems to fail in supplying the most essential settings for creating the liveable city. The aim of this study is to explore how public spaces can contribute to the creation of liveable cities, looking at a specific case study of the neighbourhood Eriksberg in Uppsala. This study stands on an assumption of the existence of a connection between physical design and human behaviour and explores how the environment affects our behaviour. Eriksberg is currently undergoing a regeneration and densification process. Carrying out a literature study, a survey, interviews and observations have resulted in the identification of a number of liveability factors. The liveable city is created through participation, collaboration and integration. Furthermore, an urbane and liveable city can be described with words such as diversity, density, a high concentration of people, an open physical structure and features of a variety of different functions and activities. Eriksberg is currently an area with weak connections and poor urban qualities, although strongly characterized by its proximity to the nature. The results from this study highlight the importance of taking advantage of existing values in order to create a liveable city. The nature appeared to be a valued living factor in the case of Eriksberg, highly appreciated by the residents in the area. By implementing a development approach for Eriksberg focusing on a higher accessibility, a greater range of primary functions and different activities, a neighbourhood that is perceived as more liveable than in the current situation can be created. / Social life & Urban Form

En R-Urban stadsdel, från teori till verklighet : Ett designkoncept för Nya Jägersro i Malmö / A R-Urban district, from theory to reality : A designkoncept for Nya Jägersro in Malmö

Bogatic, David, Eklöf, Elina January 2021 (has links)
This thesis has been made to act as the basis for the development of a structural sketch over the estate, Nya Jägersro, in the southeastern part of Malmö. The thesis seeks to create a design concept that combines social and ecological sustainability and to explore a changed view of how a site becomes ecologically sustainable without overlooking the site's qualities. The thesis questions are based on two problems. The first one is how today's city planning chooses to densify cities based on ideals to build sustainably. The second one is the view of what is sustainable. To address these problems the thesis purpose is to produce a design concept that combines social and ecological sustainability and takes the site's specified qualities into consideration. The theory consists of the concept’s Ecological urbanism and the R-urban, both striving for sustainable development and complemented by theoretical building blocks which work as the bridge between theory and reality. The method used in this thesis is a qualitative method combined with design-thinking. The used methods for information gathering are site observation, literary studies, and semi-structured interviews. The proposed design concept builds on an alternative way to design cities. The tools used for this alternative way of designing have been developed through design-thinking as a complementing method where the theoretical building blocks, together, creates a continuously transformative process that aim to create sustainable neighborhoods with a focus on a more sustainable way of life. The design concept seek to help realizing a more ecological city in practice, that takes on all aspects of the city which can make the city ecological instead of just environmentally friendly. The design concepts, thus align with SMT:s and Malmö Stads agendas, but differs in some aspects. The largest differentiating factor is the view on how dense Nya Jägersro should be built, and how the site´s urban and rural qualities can be taken as a point of departure for designing the new built environment.

Akademické náměstí - Fakulta výtvarných umění / Academic Square - Faculty of Fine Arts

Novotná, Markéta January 2015 (has links)
The final thesis is focused on a design of architectural study of a Faculty of fine arts on the area, which is located on a border of two Brno districts Veveří and Žabovřesky. The chosen area is determined by Šumavská Street, Bulínova Street, and Veveří Street. The design follows an already processed part of the project from the first semester in the subject TG02. It is focused on the layout of the buildings in the area and the design of architectonical study for three out of four units – the Faculty of Forensic Engineering, common premises of both faculties and underground garages. The fourth unit, which is the Faculty of Fine Arts, is designed in the second phase as the final thesis. Other units are developed together with the design of the second faculty. The architectonical concept follows the city structure in the nearest surroundings. The main idea was to create a cluster of buildings which respects a human scale, not to create a long endless facades and gigantic masses of buildings. The solution is two L-shaped buildings, which grip the building of common premises. It creates a lot of semipublic and public spaces with a great variety of various functions.
