Sexual practices in South African prisons from the perspective of Christian Ethics

Shayi, Frank 04 November 2008 (has links)
Sexual practices in prisons the world over are almost the same. Men incarcerated for many years in limited space with other men without the opportunity for normal heterosexual sexual outlet end up practicing homosexual sex. South African prisons are not an exception. In this dissertation I tackled a number of issues from a Christian Ethics perspective, with a slant from the Evangelical wing of Christianity as this is my background. The few issues I investigated from a South African prison system are the following. Firstly the issue of homosexuality was looked at from an Evangelical perspective. The conclusion was that the practice of homosexuality is a sin just like any other sexual deviation from the God ordained sex within marriage. Secondly empirical research was done to verify homosexual sex in prisons in South Africa. The results of this research confirmed that homosexual sex acts are a daily occurrence in our prisons. The results also showed that the aspect of indecent assault, forced or coerced homosexual sex acts now classified as “male rape,” was rife in prisons. Other factors related to this matter were that prison gangs and Correctional members’ complicity aggravated this issue of “male rape”. Thirdly we looked at the policy of “no sex in prison” as set out by the Department of Correctional Services. A number of discrepancies were uncovered. Firstly, there is unfair discrimination in the treatment of heterosexuals and homosexuals in prisons. Whereas heterosexuals are legally barred from having sex with their spouses while in prison, homosexuals are having sex in prison with their partners. Although the DOCS insists on the policy of no sex in prison, they appear to be condoning it in that they provide free condoms to inmates. In accordance with the stipulation of the Bill of Rights regarding unfair discrimination, the DOCS should treat inmates equally. To make matters worse, the South African Government has sanctioned same sex unions but failed to put in place effective control measures in correctional service centres to ensure that the policy of no sex in prison is not undermined. The DOCS should look at either allowing heterosexuals to have conjugal visits or ensure that homosexuals are not put together in the same cell, so as to adhere to this policy. Fourthly the issue punishment and rehabilitation was also investigated. This was done from a Christian ethical perspective. The Department of Correctional Services says that their objective is not to punishment but to rehabilitate. The discussion showed that putting convicted criminals in prison was a punishment on its own. It was further discussed that punishment is biblical, and that whilst punishment should be left to God, He in turn has put governments on earth as His servants to mete out punishment to those who deserve it. It was also discussed that rehabilitation does not happen automatically, that it needs a buy in by the individual concerned as seen from the examples of individuals cited in the thesis. Lastly, the causes of such sexual behaviour in prison were investigated. Corrupt officials, overcrowding and inadequate food supply, among others, are matters to be rectified in dealing with this problem. Alternatives to jail sentences for minor offences are also strongly suggested so as to alleviate the problem of overcrowding. / Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2008. / Dogmatics and Christian Ethics / unrestricted

The Effects of a College Human Sexuality Course on Students' Sexual Knowledge, Attitude, and Behavior.

Smith, Jolene A. 12 1900 (has links)
Using an experimental-comparison group design, data were collected at the beginning and end of a semester to assess the effect of a human sexuality course on students' sexual knowledge, sexual attitude, and sexual behaviors. Data analysis by t-tests showed statistical differences between the experimental and comparison group only on sexual knowledge scores ( p < .001), with the experimental group scoring higher. T-tests showed statistical difference between males and females in sexual attitude (p< .001) and sexual behavior (p< .001) with women scoring higher than men in the experimental group, and also when experimental and control groups were combined. Although not statistically significant, women scored higher in sexual knowledge than males.

La reproduction humaine et l’éducation à la sexualité en Tunisie et en d’autres pays francophones : analyse des manuels et des conceptions d’enseignants / Human Reproduction and Sex Education in Tunisia and other francophone countries : analysis of textbooks and teachers’ conceptions

Abdelli, Sami 12 July 2011 (has links)
Our scientific knowledge about Human Reproduction and Sex Education is constantly changing. Its didactic transposition is also changing according to the evolution of social practices linked to reproductive health, social behaviours, and in its interaction with values. The aim of our research is therefore to clarify these interactions and to identify the factors that prevent or promote the introduction of the lastest scientific knowledge on Human Reproduction and Sex Education into a country’s teaching syllabus. Firstly, a historical and epistemological approach was used to study the influence of cultural factors on sex education in the Arabic-Muslim culture, without neglecting the Western culture. Secondly, a didactic approach was used to critically analyse Tunisian school textbooks on Human Reproduction and Sex Education (from 2004 to 2011), and equally to carry out a comparative analysis of teachers' conceptions in Tunisia and in six francophone countries (Morocco, Algeria, Lebanon, Burkina Faso, Senegal and France). In order to choose an appropriate teaching content, we thought it wise to use the approach of studying the interaction between the syllabus, the textbooks and the student teachers’ expectations on the teaching of human reproduction and sexuality. It is in this perspective that we attempted to identify the expectations and worries of student teachers on issues related to the teaching of sex education. The last chapter of this work analyses the conceptions of teachers in seven francophones countries (Algeria, Burkina Faso, France, Lebanon, Morocco, Senegal, Tunisia) on Human Reproduction and Sex Education. This work intends to make its contribution to the vast and constantly evolving domain of Human sexuality, especially in the perspective of citizenship education. It intends to discuss the question of culture and moral status of sexuality in our society. In fact, the analysis of teachers' conceptions about sex education led us to characterize the notion of "relation to culture" which approaches the concept of "relation to knowledge". Highlighting the impact of Muslim culture on the topic has permitted us to draw conclusions about the link between culture and conceptions

The first one, composed by 62 men, aimed to evaluate the spinal cord injury impact on human sexuality, trying to identify the significantly affected sexual components. It was possible to verify alterations between the pre and post-injury periods: frequency and number of sexual partners significant reduction; anal sex practice considerable decrease; considerable modifications in the sexual preferences for hugging, vaginal penetration, vibrator use; variation in the pleasure originated in the following erogenous zones: mouth, neck, penis, thighs and legs; alterations in the sexual functions with significant reduction of the levels of desire, arousal and ejaculatory excitement, orgasm, as well as dysfunctions; sexual satisfaction significant reduction, even though some perceived alterations are equal to the general population. The results confirm the importance of giving assistance to the sexual sphere of these patients and found the proposal of sexual rehabilitation, serving as indicator. The second study involved the same population and aimed to analyze the sexual counseling, as well as understanding the post-injury sexual self-adaptation process. Between results, it was observed that less than half of the participants and only about one sixth of the partners received some type of sexual counseling. It was verified that the self-adaptation consists of a process influenced by some factors: age of incidence and time-of-onset, quality of received information, not being always successful, possessing peculiarities, such as the distinction between presence and absence of previous sexual experience before injury. The third study was composed by 25 people among researchers, relatives, health professionals, spinal cord injured men and their partners. It aimed to elaborate a sexual rehabilitation proposal that reflects the target population yearnings, necessities and potentialities. It was developed by means of Grupo Interdisciplinar de Apoio à Sexualidade Adaptada - GIASA, characterized by weekly 90 minutes meetings, divided in two stages: the first one, carried through May to September 2007, aiming to identify the pertinent subjects and the second one, between October and December 2007, with the purpose of presenting and discussing the subjects mentioned in the previous stage and to suggest evaluated strategies for the participants. While the first stage meetings had been marked by the discussion of free subjects, related to the sexuality, the second was composed for two moments: the first one, marked by seminaries, involving theoretical intervention on the previously definite subjects, with posterior opening for discussion, experiences exchange, reflection about the subjects and their respective approach, characterizing the focal group; and a second moment, where strategies characterizing the therapeutical interventions were applied, assessed and carried through interdisciplinarly, trying to involve the participants actively as citizens in the processes of focal discussion and theoretician-therapeutical intervention for the resolution of the diagnosed problem and considered for this research. Finally, based on the stages of the GIASA, it was elaborated a proposal of sexual rehabilitation called Grupo Interdisciplinar de Apoio à Saúde Sexual - GSex, generally directed to the community, and specially directed to the physically challenged people and/or chronic illnesses, being defined: purpose, action methodology, theoretical basis, principles, members functions, actions delineation, attendance process, among others topics.

Transformative Reading: An Evangelical Metamodern Approach to Understanding Biblical Interpretive Practice

McGuire, Sean M. W. 11 1900 (has links)
Like many denominations in the secularized West, the Canadian Baptists of Ontario and Quebec have been engaged in debates regarding sexuality and marriage over the past decade. As these debates have developed, it has become increasingly clear that at their center are differences in biblical interpretive practice. Yet it is my experience that, by and large, many evangelicals, particularly in the Canadian Baptist context, do not know how to discuss their interpretive practice. In order to work through difficult topics, such as the one mentioned above, Christians need to develop the ability to reflect both on how they are interpreting Scripture and how they see others interpreting Scripture, so that they can coherently and constructively discuss their interpretations with others with whom they disagree. In this dissertation, I utilize a hermeneutic theory, metamodern cultural theory, and a proposed revision of an integrative theological method, the Wesleyan Quadrilateral, to develop a a paradigm for observing and describing differences in biblical interpretive practice. Using the aforementioned debates concerning sexuality and marriage as an illustrative example, the project reveals that metamodern interpretations of scripture are complex and tension-filled, and that amidst this complexity, the prioritization (or lack thereof) of theological reflection sources prompts particular interpretive applications. When they are able to perceive the multivalent nature of interpretation, readers are better equipped through this work to think carefully and critically about how they come to their interpretive conclusions and how those conclusions draw them towards faithful living in Christ via situational application of the biblical text.

CASSIA QUELHO TAVARES 18 October 2022 (has links)
[en] The present thesis is a result of the author s concern with a significant professional experience in women’s health field and an effective presence in the pastoral compassing the theme of human sexuality. It seeks to present a methodology of a continuing education aiming the person s conformation in the pastoral so as to have better comprehension e probation of one’s sexual-affective dimension. At first, the human being is revealed in the contemporary society when it comes to its manner of understanding and experiencing sexuality, influenced by several anthropological, social and cultural situations which do not always indulge the harmonious development of the sexual-affective dimension, but interfere in one s way of thinking and acting. It is yet emphasized the reflection that the contemporaneity demands from Christians and theologians concerning the need of a continuous effort in framing an integrator and interdisciplinary knowledge that contributes to the person s maturing in all dimensions. Even though there are damages in the field of sexuality, due to a dualistic point of view of the human being, there is the possibility of changes incited by the renewed moral after Vatican Council II through the material contribution of the Church s documents on Sexual Ethics. The author shows gaps and deficiencies in the forms of approaching the sexual-affective theme in the academic theological work and in the pastoral performance. A methodology is proposed grounded in the ethicaltheological reflection mediated by Paulo Freire s Educational Praxis, objectifying an emancipator and humanizing Continuing Education that serves people in the pastoral, addressing their sexual-affective development and maturing.
