Modeling of Fluid Powered Actuators Using Auto Regressive with Exogenous Input Model

Hossain, Zakia 25 September 2012 (has links)
System identification has importance in modeling and control of industrial systems. The main task of system identification is to build a suitable model that represents the relationship between input, output and disturbances of a real system. The thesis presents identification and discrete time linear modeling of a hydraulic actuator. This thesis demonstrates how to formulate hydraulic functions for both normal and faulty conditions with internal leakage using both offline and on-line measurements. Least square and recursive least square methods are used to estimate the model parameters based on the Auto Regressive technique with Exogenous input (ARX) model. For the offline case, square and sine wave signals are used as input control signals. For the online case, random input control signal is applied. Prediction error criterion is used for model validation based on experimental data. It is shown that the ARX model is capable of representing a valve-controlled hydraulic system dynamics.

Modelling and control of an electrode system for a three-phase Electric Arc Furnace

Peens, Marius 12 April 2007 (has links)
This dissertation investigates the control of the electrical energy input to a three-phase electric arc furnace (EAF). Graphite electrodes are used to convert electrical energy into heat via three-phase electric arcs. Constant arc length is desirable as it implies steady energy transfer from the graphite electrodes to the metallic charge in the furnace bath. With the charge level constantly changing, the electrodes must be able to adjust for the arc length to remain constant. In this dissertation electric arc current is used as the control variable. This is the most often used control variable in the electric arc furnace industry and implies fast adjustments of short circuits between the electrode tips and the metallic charge. The motivation behind the modelling of the electrode system for a three-phase electric arc furnace is to extend an existing EAF model developed at the University of Pretoria. The existing model investigates the control of the electric arc furnace process itself and it is assumed that the applied electrical energy input is constant. Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) control as well as Model-Predictive-Control (MPC) is applied to the electrode system. Time delays on the outputs of the hydraulic actuators makes it necessary to include approximations of time delays on the outputs of the linear model, which is needed for controller design. A well known general control problem is followed in this dissertation. All models are derived from first principles, and complete controller design is carried out. Most available literature lack in at least one of these fields. / Dissertation (MEng (Electronic Engineering))--University of Pretoria, 2007. / Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering / unrestricted

On Motion Control of Linear Incremental Hydraulic Actuators

Hochwallner, Martin January 2017 (has links)
Linear Incremental Hydraulic Actuators combine one or more short-stroke cylinders, and two or more engaging/disengaging mechanisms into one actuator with long, medium, or even unlimited stroke length. The motion of each single short-stroke actuator concatenated by the engaging/disengaging mechanisms forms the motion of the linear incremental hydraulic actuator. The patterns of how these motions are concatenated form the gaits of a specific linear incremental hydraulic actuator. Linear incremental hydraulic actuators may have more than one gait. In an application, the gaits may be combined to achieve optimal performance at various operating points. The distinguishing characteristic of linear incremental hydraulic actuators is the incremental motion. The term incremental actuator is seen as analogous to the incremental versus absolute position sensor. Incremental actuators realize naturally relative positioning. Incremental motion means also that the behavior does not depend on an absolute position but only on the relative position within a cycle or step. Incremental actuators may realize discrete incremental or continuous incremental motion. Discrete incremental actuators can only approach discrete positions, whereby stepper drives are one prominent example. In contrast, continuous incremental actuators may approach any position. Linear electric motors are one example of continuous incremental actuators. The actuator has no inherent limitation in stroke length, as every step or cycle adds only to the state at the beginning of the step or cycle and does not depend on the absolute position. This led to the alternative working title Hydraulic Infinite Linear Actuator. Linear incremental hydraulic actuator provides long stroke, high force, and linear motion and has the potential to decrease the necessary resource usage, minimize environmental impact, e.g. from potential oil spillage, extend the range of feasible products: longer, stiffer, better, etc. This thesis presents an analysis of the characteristics and properties of linear incremental hydraulic actuators as well as the gaits and possible realizations of some gaits. The gait for continuous, smooth motion with two cylinders is comprehensively studied and a control concept for the tracking problem is proposed. The control concept encapsulates the complexity of the linear incremental hydraulic actuator so that an application does not have to deal with it. One other gait, the ballistic gait, which realizes fast, energy-efficient motion, enabling energy recuperation is studied.

A Thermal Analysis of Direct Driven Hydraulics

Minav, Tatiana, Papini, Luca, Pietola, Matti 02 May 2016 (has links) (PDF)
This paper focuses on thermal analysis of a direct driven hydraulic setup (DDH). DDH combines the benefits of electric with hydraulic technology in compact package with high power density, high performance and good controllability. DDH enables for reduction of parasitic losses for better fuel efficiency and lower operating costs. This one-piece housing design delivers system simplicity and lowers both installation and maintenance costs. Advantages of the presented architecture are the reduced hydraulic tubing and the amount of potential leakage points. The prediction of the thermal behavior and its management represents an open challenge for the system as temperature is a determinant parameter in terms of performance, lifespan and safety. Therefore, the electro-hydraulic model of a DDH involving a variable motor speed, fixed-displacement internal gear pump/motors was developed at system level for thermal analysis. In addition, a generic model was proposed for the electric machine, energy losses dependent on velocity, torque and temperature was validated by measurements under various operative conditions. Results of model investigation predict ricing of temperature during lifting cycle, and flattened during lowering in pimp/motor. Conclusions are drawn concerning the DDH thermal behavior.

Controle em cascata de um atuador hidráulico utilizando redes neurais

Borges, Fábio Augusto Pires January 2017 (has links)
In this work, the modeling and identification of a hydraulic actuator testing setup are performed and the analytical expressions that are used in a cascade control strategy applyied in a position trajectory tracking control are designed. Such cascade strategy uses the feedback linearization control law in the hydraulical subsystem and the Slotine and Li control law in the mechanical one. Based on this cascade strategy, a neural cascade controller is proposed, for which the analytical function used as inversion set in the feedback linearization control law and the friction function compensation of the Slotine and Li control law are replaced by multi layer perceptrons neural networks where the inputs are the states of the system and the hydraulic fluid temperature. The novel controller is introduced in two different aproachs: the first one where the neural networks do not have on-line modifications and the second one where adaptive control laws are proposed. For both of them the stability proof of the closed-loop system is presented. Experimental results about some position tracking controls performed in different fluid temperature are showed. The results show that the novel controller is more efective than the classical PID, PID+feedforward and the traditional analytical cascade controller. The experiments are performed in two different setups: considering the system without importants parametric variations where is applied the non adaptive cascade neural controller and in the presence of parametric variations where is applied the adaptive cascade neural controller.

Controle de um manipulador plataforma de Stewart com atuadores hidráulicos como simulador de movimentos de navios

Lebrón García, Rodrigo Manuel January 2015 (has links)
The Stewart Platform is one of the most representative examples of parallel manipulators. It has six degrees of freedoms, and superior precision and load/weight ratio when compared to serial manipulators, properties that make them suitable and attractive options for motion simulation applications. In this sense, this work focuses on robust tracking control design for a high load capacity hydraulically driven Stewart Platform manipulator, capable of vessel motion simulations. The kinematic, dynamic and control analysis of the manipulator are presented, as well as a mathematical model of the hydraulic cylinders used as actuators. Especial attention is given to the derivation of the manipulator dynamics formulation, the skew symmetric property of the Inertia and Coriolis matrices is carefully proven in both Cartesian and joint state spaces. The proposed controller takes into consideration the manipulator mechanical dynamics and the actuators hydraulic dynamics. Furthermore, the Lyapunov criteria is used to guarantee control closed loop stability. The control performance is verified by means of computer simulations.
