No. of bitstreams: 1 DISSERTACAO PARA CAPA DURA 27 04 15.pdf: 3447110 bytes, checksum: 778a1f1724d4f876c769db529637390d (MD5) Previous issue date: 2015-03-12 / Coordena??o de Aperfei?oamento de Pessoal de N?vel Superior - CAPES / The semi-arid Bahia is a very diverse area, with differences not only in climate but also in culture, enabling studies in various areas of knowledge, as well as study of the lexicon that is the window through which a community can see the world (Cf. ISQUERDO, 2007). From the need to explore this lexical inventory, we will address the following question: does the lexicon found in hinterland communities of Bahia's semiarid interior show influences of Galician and / or Archaic Portuguese, ie check if there are in the lexicon used in semiarid Bahia Iberian influences, especially if there is maintenance of so-called archaisms. The existence of this kind of lexicon, especially in the speech of older people, is our initial hypothesis. In this sense, we seek to carry out the survey of backcountry lexicon, checking for influences of the Spanish, Galician, and Portuguese languages, based initially in the corpus of the collection "samples of spoken language in the Bahian semi-arid" UEFS / FAPESB. The research methodology is the quali-quantitavie method. The corpus of data used is part of the database of the research project "Portuguese Language in the Semiarid Bahia." In order to recognize and analyze, in full measure the relevance of the lexicon of the semi-arid Bahia, the decision was made to investigate the unknown and to known about the subject as recognized in the growing literature base for this topic. In this sense, the possibility of studying the Iberian influences within the Bahian semi-arid lexicon means understanding more effectively the great cultural wealth within the the area, culminating in new dialogues for future more watchful eyes of the semiarid cultural source, and hence of its lexical richness. The results indicate that there is maintenance of some archaic terms, especially in the most isolated communities.

AP and IB Instructional Practices for Students who Demonstrate Advanced Proficiency in Spanish

Andersen, Carol Mable 01 January 2014 (has links)
Linguistically gifted and talented students often do not receive appropriate instruction in the classroom. Little research has been conducted about how teachers of Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate courses provide instruction to students who demonstrate advanced proficiency in a second language. The purpose of this multiple case study was to explore how teachers of these courses provided instruction for students who demonstrate advanced proficiency in Spanish. The conceptual framework was based on Krashen's second language acquisition theory and Gardner's multiple intelligences theory. Participants included 2 teachers from 2 high schools in 1 county in a western state. Data were collected from individual teacher interviews, reflective journals, and documents such as course standards and course descriptions. Single case analysis involved coding and category construction, using the constant comparative method for interview and journal data, and a content analysis for documents. Cross case analysis involved an examination of all data sources and cases to determine themes and discrepant data. A key finding was that, in addition to course rigor, teachers used a variety of instructional strategies, such as flexible grouping, choice, higher order thinking skills, and formative assessments to meet the needs of all students, including advanced proficiency students. Recommendations are to improve the identification of linguistically gifted and talented students and to provide professional development in differentiated instruction. This study contributes to positive social change by providing educators with a deeper understanding that students who are proficient in languages will be invaluable in building a strong global community.

Implementation and verification of the Information Bottleneck interpretation of deep neural networks

Liu, Feiyang January 2018 (has links)
Although deep neural networks (DNNs) have made remarkable achievementsin various elds, there is still not a matching practical theory that is able toexplain DNNs' performances. Tishby (2015) proposed a new insight to analyzeDNN via the Information bottleneck (IB) method. By visualizing how muchrelevant information each layer contains in input and output, he claimed thatthe DNNs training is composed of tting phase and compression phase. Thetting phase is when DNNs learn information both in input and output, andthe prediction accuracy goes high during this process. Afterwards, it is thecompression phase when information in output is preserved while unrelatedinformation in input is thrown away in hidden layers. This is a tradeo betweenthe network complexity (complicated DNNs lose less information in input) andprediction accuracy, which is the same goal with the IB method. In this thesis, we verify this IB interpretation rst by reimplementing Tishby'swork, where the hidden layer distribution is approximated by the histogram(binning). Additionally, we introduce various mutual information estimationmethods like kernel density estimators. Based upon simulation results, we concludethat there exists an optimal bound on the mutual information betweenhidden layers with input and output. But the compression mainly occurs whenthe activation function is \double saturated", like hyperbolic tangent function.Furthermore, we extend the work to the simulated wireless model where thedata set is generated by a wireless system simulator. The results reveal that theIB interpretation is true, but the binning is not a correct tool to approximatehidden layer distributions. The ndings of this thesis reect the informationvariations in each layer during the training, which might contribute to selectingtransmission parameter congurations in each frame in wireless communicationsystems.

Elite Education for the People? : Nuances of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program in Polish High Schools

Kucharska, Paulina January 2023 (has links)
The International Baccalaureate (IB), a private curriculum associated largely with exclusive education for transnationally mobile upper classes, has recently began to quietly enter public, national education systems, offering its alternative, elite schooling in tuition-free state institutions. This paper explores the nuanced case of Poland, where IB diploma program is offered as one of the tracks within state schools, existing side-by-side and competing with the national curriculum. Poland, with its particular post-soviet socio-political conditions, where public schooling continuously enjoys an elite status over the failed project of private education, presents an interesting case in regards to the phenomenon. This study employs Pierre Bourdieou’s theories of capital, dispositions and social field to examine the makeup of IB classrooms in public schools in Poland, and answer how the curriculum is experienced and made sense of by the graduates. Qualitative interviews with 17 graduates present an insight into the experience of IB in 6 state schools. The study has found that IB diploma program is primarily employed in well-established, elite institutions, which follow a meritocratic logic of technical selection of only the most talented candidates. IB becomes the academic elite club within an elite club, therefore access to it is limited twofold. Accounts across the case study schools showed that IB students are characterized by access to higher volumes of different resources, allowing them to get admitted, survive the academic rigor, and continue their education abroad. Graduates from all types and locations of IB schools follow, almost exclusively, the same three trajectories according to which an IB student considers either a) going abroad to the United Kingdom, b) going abroad to the Netherlands, or c) studying medicine in Poland at the Warsaw Medical University (WUM). Finally, the study has found that students use IB strategically, to access prestigious national or international higher education. However, the conversion of the assets gained through the diploma into advantage in higher education is interrupted by the pedagogical disparity with the ‘mindless memorizing’ at national universities, as well as with the automatic downward social mobility when becoming an immigrant. The findings contribute to the debate over the democratization of international education, its accessibility and the strategic use of it on a national versus international arena.

Microgrid Safety and Protection Strategies

Hartono, Aryudha January 2018 (has links)
One of the challenging issues with the Microgrid is that the bidirectional power flow providedby the distributed generator (DG) which modify the fault current level. Furthermore, theinverter based-renewable energy source (IB-RES) limits the total fault current contributionto the grid due to its thermal capability. Since Microgrid should be able to operate in gridconnectedand islanded mode, protection strategies are needed to solve this challenging issue.By only having IB-RES and battery storage system, the fault condition and normaloperation cannot be distinguished. Apart from fault clearing issue, there is a consideration tostudy the fault isolation in the Microgrid under the limited fault current provided by IB-RES.To have fault isolation capability, the intelligent electrical device (IED) is needed. The firststep is to find a method that can detect a fault under the fault level modification constraint. This thesis presents a zero and negative sequence current protection to detect a fault. However, to make it selective, this protection will be applied directionally. It is common thatthe distribution grid has unbalanced load operation, thus providing zero and negativesequence component in the grid. To apply the directional zero and negative sequence currentprotection, the unbalanced load flow is simulated to distinguish the fault and normaloperation under unbalanced load condition.Safety and regulation are discussed briefly in this thesis. It is important that each of theIB-RES has fault ride-through (FRT) capability that follows a regulation. However, thisregulation is expected to have a coordination with the proposed protection in the Microgridso the reliability, selectivity, and sensitivity can be achieved in grid-connected and islandedmode. This thesis shows the coordination between fuses, IED, and inverter FRT capability. After providing a protection strategy, the adaptability of the proposed protection isassessed regarding of Microgrid expansion. The result shows that by applying the schemeand following the grading margin requirement that is presented in this thesis, the Microgridexpansion will not disrupt the proposed protection coordination. Since it is known that thedistribution grid is expanding its load capacity and microgeneration in continuous basis, it isconvenient that the proposed protection in the IED is expected to be adaptable, means that ithas a fixed IED setting when the grid is expanded. The analysis is performed by electrical transient analysis program (ETAP) and MatlabSimulink. The short circuit analysis, sequence-of-operation, and unbalanced load flow aresimulated by ETAP, while the protection stability is simulated by Matlab Simulink.

Étude de complexes non-covalents et de polymères organiques par couplage entre la spectrométrie de masse et la mobilité ionique / Structural study of non-covalent complexes and organic polymers by mass spectrometry coupled with ion mobility

Ballivian, Renaud 28 October 2010 (has links)
The first step is the characterization of the interactions leading to the adoption of a functional tridimensional structure by a multimeric assembly. The second step consists of underlining the structural modifications induced by the complexation, and their influence on the system’s function. The Ion Mobility/Mass Spectrometry (IM/MS) is a gas-phase method that is used to separate ions according to their geometry and their masse-to-charge ratio. IM/MS also provides insights on their intrinsic properties, by measuring their collision cross sections. Using this method, we have studied the structure of three different non-covalent complexes: the aggregation of tannins on the human salivary protein IB-5, the fixation of a small ligand (Ac2KAA) on vancomycin, and the complexation between metallic cations and poly-lactid polymers. The evolution of the collision cross-sections as a function of the size of the system or the complexation state clearly shows structural transitions. Moreover, combined with molecular modeling or laser spectroscopy, the IM/MS technique reveals to be a powerful tool to characterize the relevant interactions in such systems. This work proves that IM/MS, besides a powerful analytical aspect, can also be used in global studies that involve several structural methods to resolve the structure of large multimeric assemblies

The community of scholars : an analysis of the biographical data from the Taʻrīkh Baghdād

Ahola, Judith January 2005 (has links)
The biographical details of the 7828 individuals listed in the biographical dictionary known as the Ta'rikh Baghdad were entered in a database and used to create a profile of the hadith community of Baghdad. The thesis explains how the database was constructed and shows how the data can be used. Evidence derived from the many references to colleagues and relatives in the biographies made it possible to date most of the undated biographies, and to construct a chronological framework within which information on the origins, occupations, tribes and other personal attributes of the Khatib's subjects could be analysed. Changes in the frequency of these attributes over time were related to conversion rates, immigration, and the popular appeal of hadith study. The thesis also demonstrates the usefulness of the fortuitously dated topographical references found in the biographies. These were used with maps to show changes in residence patterns over the 320 years covered by the Ta'rikh Baghdad.

Observational Aspects Of Core Collapse Supernovae

Gurugubelli, Uday Kumar January 2010 (has links) (PDF)
The discovery of several bright supernovae (SNe) in recent years has evoked a great deal of interest in these objects. The study of these objects are of importance not only as probes to the end stages of stellar evolution, but also as probes for cosmology. Though the basic classification of supernovae was restricted to type I and type II, pecularities became apparent over the last two decades that have been confirmed into new classes, currently designated as types Ia, Ib, Ic, IIL, IIP, IIn and IIb. Diversity in the behaviour of supernovae within a class has also become apparent, such as photometric and spectroscopic sequence in type Ia, and the existence of the super-luminous‚ hypernovae‚ which, at times are found to be associated with GRB events. Core collapse supernovae are the end stages of most stars, more massive than ~ 8M . As such, they provide a key test of stellar evolution. Further, they play a major role in driving the chemical and dynamical evolution of galaxies, and have also been proposed to be major contributors to dust epochs when the Universe was still young. SNe explosions provide unique natural laboratories for studying, in real time, the physics of a variety of combustion, hydrodynamic, nuclear and atomic processes. All subclasses of SNe, except for type Ia, are core collapse events. The differences in the observed properties of the various subclasses, and even within a single subclass, may be attributed to the progenitor mass, metallicity and environment. The light curve and the spectral development would enable obtaining certain critical parameters related to the progenitor. It is hence important to study individual SNe events. The aim of this work is to (a) study the individual objects in detail and obtain critical parameters such as the radioactive Nickel mass ejected during the explosion, the mass of the ejected material, velocity with which the material has been ejected, the explosion energy and the distance to the supernova; (b) estimate progenitor mass and radius; (c) group the individual events according to certain common properties and inter-compare the properties of the various groups to arrive at a possible evolutionary sequence of the progenitors. This thesis consists of 6 chapters. Chapter 1 gives a general introduction to the evolution of massive stars and supernovae. Chapter 2 describes the telescope and instrument, observations and reduction procedures. All data were obtained using the 2m Himalayan Chandra Telescope (HCT), Hanle, India. The technical details of telescope and instrument are given in the chapter. This chapter also discusses in detail the various techniques used in photometric and spectroscopic data reductions. Chapter 3 discusses the properties of Type IIP supernovae with a detailed study of SN 2004A and SN 2008in. The distances to the supernovae are estimated using the Standard Candle Method (SCM) (Hamuy & Pinto, 2002) and the Expanding Photosphere Method (EPM)( Krishner & Kwan, 1974, 1975, Hamuy et al. 2001) . In addition, the explosion energy, radius of progenitor, the nickel mass and the mass ejected during the explosion are estimated using the observed light curves and the spectra (Hamuy 2003, Elmahamdi 2003, Litvinova & Nadyozhin 1985). The progenitor mass is also estimated based on the estimate of the ejected mass. Chapter 4 describes the evolution of the Type IIn supernova SN2005kd, which is characterized by narrow emission lines in the early spectra. Some Type IIn supernovae show a plateau phase in the light curve, and SN 2005kd is of this kind. The narrow emission lines in the spectra show that the SN ejecta interacted with the pre-supernova circumstellar material that is a result of mass loss from the progenitor during its evolution. Chapter 5 discusses the properties of stripped envelope core collapse supernovae using the observations of type Ib/c supernovae SN 2006jc, SN 2007ru, and SN 2009jf. SN 2006jc was found to be peculiar, with narrow He I emission lines arising due to the SN ejecta interaction with a helium enriched pre-supernova circumstellar material. SN 2007ru shows very broad lines in the spectra indicating a velocity of 20,000 kms−1 . The light curve evolution of SN 2007ru indicates a fast rise time and post-maximum decline more rapid than other broad-line Ic supernovae. The light curves of SN 2009jf are broad, with slow decline, indicating the presence of massive ejecta. He I line is identified with velocity of 16,000 km−1 . The photometric and spectroscopic evolution of all the above SNe are described in detail and compared with other similar supernovae. The various physical parameters related to the explosion and progenitors of SNe are also estimated. Chapter 6 is devoted to conclusions and future plans for the work in this thesis.
