Drawing in anatomy education : exploring its roles in teaching and assessment

Panagiotopoulos, Dimitrios January 2018 (has links)
This thesis consists of an investigation of the current use of visual representations, and drawing in particular, when teaching and assessing within anatomy education in medical studies. Although we know a lot about teachers’ use of visual representations and increasingly drawing, especially in the context of science education, less is known about the use of those tools by educators in the anatomical domain. Drawing is not currently systematically being used within assessment in anatomy education in UK medical schools, and its potential in assessment has not been investigated in depth. Four studies were conducted to answer the research questions set for this thesis. The first study investigated the way in which the teaching staff understand the use of visual representations in teaching, learning and assessment in anatomy. To answer this, observations of seven anatomy demonstrators were conducted within Year 1 dissection sessions, and interviews were conducted with the same demonstrators. The second study employed a real-world experimental design to explore if students’ drawings reveal changes in their understanding after dissection. Drawings from 98 Year 1 medical students were analysed in a within-subject crossover design, where students in the first condition drew the exterior of the heart before dissection in Week 1 and drew the superior mediastinum after dissection in Week 2. The order was reversed for students in the second condition. All drawings were analysed for their content and form with an extensive coding scheme that was developed for this thesis, as the existing coding approaches towards drawings were judged as inappropriate. The third study investigated the use of drawing to reveal changes in understanding as the medical degree progresses. Drawings of the exterior of the heart from 46 Year 3 students were analysed and compared to drawings from the Year 1 students. Finally, the fourth study investigated the way in which anatomy demonstrators understand drawing in the assessment of anatomical knowledge; eight artefact-based interviews were conducted with anatomy demonstrators. The findings offer important insights into the way in which visual representations and drawing in particular are being used by anatomy demonstrators within anatomy education and their perspectives on the use of drawing in teaching, learning and assessment. A significant contribution is also made to the knowledge regarding the use of drawing to assess understanding in spatially intensive domains, such as the anatomical one. This thesis also contributes to our knowledge of dissection as a method of teaching anatomy and the need for drawing training within this domain. Finally, the scheme for drawing analysis that was developed, evaluated and employed in this thesis can be considered a methodological contribution to the approaches of analysing drawings in the current literature.

#selfie : A self-reflective venture into the realms of Instagram

Meier, Johanna January 2018 (has links)
The autoethnographic research project #selfie investigates the effects of the social media platform Instagram on the well-being of users aged 15–28 years. It focuses on the physical, psychological and psychosocial aspects of this user group’s behaviours, thoughts, and feelings. A review of current research shows that while Instagram usage can enhance short-term well-being by triggering positive emotional responses, the long-term consequences can include information overload and stress phenomena, which can lead to a decreased ability or even inability to focus on one specific thing or moment. The present thesis examines the effect of this decreased or lacking ability on individuals’ competence of reflective thinking and “mindfulness,” a competence which can be linked to living a lifestyle of sustainability. Without reflective thinking, individuals are unable to determine their own standpoint when it comes to issues related to sustainability. The review of current research is juxtaposed with excerpts from interviews and conversations with the investigated user group, as well as autoethnographic investigation and reflective illustrations based on the author’s own experience with Instagram. Through this, the actuality of prevailing opinions in current literature is discussed critically. This research suggests that design can and should bring issues such as extensive Instagram usage and its possible effects to public attention by offering an approach that can be as informative as appealing, making it attractive to commit to reflective thinking and encouraging the audience to broaden their horizon on the issue. The design proposal of this project consists of an illustrated graphic story which combines comics, illustration and text in the form of a zine which opens up a platform for dialogue on Instagram usage, therefore challenging readers to reflect on their own experiences and guiding them on their way to mindful social media use.

Grafisk navigering i Scania Multi : En studie om grafisk navigering i hierarkiska strukturer

Hahne, Elly January 2020 (has links)
Scania’s digital information and spare parts catalogue, Multi, is a tool used by mechanics and parts personnel to find information about different components, functions and systems in a vehicle. However, Multi is perceived by its users as hard to navigate and, sometimes, illogical, which has a negative impact on its usability. Scania believes that Multi’s usability could be enhanced through the use of graphical navigation, in which reality is translated into an interactive model in Multi.  The purpose of this study was to investigate how graphic navigation in hierarchical structures should be designed, with the hope that in the future the result will be helpful in the continued development of Multi. The study resulted in a number of guidelines for graphical navigation and navigation in hierarchical structures, which then were applied in a design proposal in the form of an interactive model of a general Scania vehicle. The purpose of the design proposal was to exemplify and visualize the various guidelines. This work is divided into a theoretical and a practical part, where the theoretical part underpins the practical. In the theoretical part, theory and previous research in interface design, information architecture, cognition and semiotics are presented. Empirics were collected, partly through analyzes of existing material for graphic navigation, and partly through usability tests of the design proposal. The practical part of this work describes the design proposal and the underlying design choices, as well as the guidelines in which this study resulted.

Arthur Rackham: English illustrator

Unknown Date (has links)
"Arthur Rackham was selected as the subject for this study because of the writer's interest in his unique drawings and because of a feeling that others may find of some use a paper which treats of the artist of fairyland. The attempt has been made to assemble from the writings of Rackham's contemporaries and his modern critics representative reviews, opinions and reactions to the illustrations for children's books. Since many of the books Rackham illustrated were reprints, the critics were influenced by previous illustrators and in such writings are found the best comparisons of Rackham's work to that of other artists"--Introduction. / Typescript. / "August, 1958." / "Submitted to the Graduate Council of Florida State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts." / Advisor: Agnes Gregory, Professor Directing Paper. / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 59-62).

The Left Hand Slowly Beckons

Jernberger, Marcus January 2020 (has links)
In my Bachelor’s project I have attempted to explore and develop my relationship with the amorphous concept that is ”style”. As an illustrator I am sometimes torn between the idea of having a single recognizable style or to be experimental and to use aesthetics as a tool rather than a signifier of a personal brand.  The project takes the form of an anthology of weird fiction stories, where each of the eight stories are illustrated in different ways and with different materials. I have choses weird fiction as a subject not only because of personal interest but also because of the specific qualities of the genre. Weird fiction deals in uncertainties and mood, with a huge emphasis on how things are told, not what is told. In this project I have attempted to transfer some of these qualities to my illustration practice. Letting the contents of the image take the backseat to how it is drawn. Both as a method for producing the anthology but also to develop as an illustrator overall.

Vikingens utseende : Att visualisera en historisk grupp

Misgeld, Love January 2022 (has links)

Maja, Vilmark January 2022 (has links)
This bachelor’s thesis study how the degree of iconicity in illustrations and year 5 students’ engagement and interest is connected. The purpose of the thesis is to produce an example of study material with illustrations, in this case linked to Västmanlands läns museums exhibition “När då var nu” (eng ‘When then was now’), that is adapted for the targeted group. This was explored through qualitative methods– two interviews with one librarian and one children’s book illustrator as well as a focus group with students from year 5. The study shows that the degree of iconicity is not the most important aspect when illustrating images to create interest and engagement. To mediate a feeling, character and high levels of detail was aspects that weighed heavier.

Jertfelt, Tova January 2016 (has links)
This paper is about the communication of bullying, and its aim is to shift the focus from the individual’s problem to the collective mind. Scientists have concluded that bullying is the result of a group behaviour, where the individual aims to be a part of the group, or control its peers. Despite this, it is mainly the image of the individual that is communicated as a representation of the subject. This leads to the people that aren’t directly involved with the subject to become distansed and uninterested in any real change. This project has taken inspiration from the people rights movements, where the individual problem (alcoholism, unemployment, etcetera) became a problem of society. What would happen if bullying became as urgent? With illustration as a tool, the project aims to involve and engage the audience at Konstfack Spring Degree Exhibition 2016 towards a larger movement that is anti-bullying. This paper will first deal with the topic of bullying, and then move towards how bullying is presented and communicated, and then end up with an artistic piece that aims to change the traditional way of speaking of bullying.
