Legault, Anik 03 1900 (has links)
Despite the important role played by healthy behaviours during pregnancy, and their health implications for both mother and baby, several studies have highlighted that health information needs of low-income and ethnic minority pregnant women have not been met. Thus, the information-seeking behaviour of low-income pregnant Maghrebian women has been studied in this thesis by using the Engel, Kollat and Blackwell (EKB) model. The main objective of this thesis’s research is to explore information-seeking behaviours regarding nutrition-related topics during pregnancy in order to determine whether decisional processes regarding information-seeking behaviour differ among primigravid and secundigravid women. This thesis proposes four specific research questions aiming at the exploration of individual and environmental factors likely to influence the active information-seeking behaviour, the type of information and the sources from which such information is collected. Data has been collected among 28 low-income voluntary women (14 primigravid and 14 secundigravid) mainly referred by the Montreal Diet Dispensary between August 2010 and 2011. Semi-structured interviews lasting 60 to 90 minutes were conducted by the doctoral student. Data were analyzed using content analysis with NVivo software. On one hand, individual factors likely to influence the active information-seeking behaviour have been found to be: the ideological examination of pregnancy, presence of pregnancy discomforts, perception of conflicting information from providers, perceived adequacy of received nutrition information, perceived sufficiency of information, body weight changes, recognition of the baby’s well-being, attitudes toward prenatal supplementation, importance given to healthy eating, and motivation to learn. On the other hand, environmental factors likely to influence the active information-seeking behaviour have been identified to be: culture (eating habits, food beliefs, religious beliefs, loss of cultural markers regarding health care and counseling during pregnancy) and interactions with individuals from the social environment. Significant information sources consulted by primigravid women for topics regarding prenatal nutrition were as follows: the registered dietitian, mother, friends, husband, and Internet. For secundigravid women, significant information sources were as follows: the dietitian, doctor, friends and husband. A significant professional information source, both for primigravid and secundigravid women, about prenatal vitamin and mineral supplementation and pregnancy weight gain was the registered dietitian. Internet was a significant public information source from which primigravid women got information regarding prenatal nutrition-related topics. Few women reported having received, during their follow-up examinations, professional information related to food safety issues and risks of gaining too much weight during pregnancy. Overall, results presented in this thesis highlight the importance of improving communicating strategies in order to better address the information needs of low-income pregnant Maghrebian women. Results raise a number of questions with regards to improving the participation of professionals to prenatal education and their nutritional counseling. Moreover, results from this thesis suggest means to improve activity planning to better address the nutrition-related information needs of pregnant Maghrebian women during pregnancy. It would be useful for researchers to get involved in studies aimed at a better understanding of the information-seeking behaviour of expectant mothers from different cultural backgrounds regarding nutrition-related topics during pregnancy as well as the baby’s nutrition.

Information needs of and use by rural farmers in Bungoma County, Kenya

Naibei, Judith Tamnai 10 1900 (has links)
Text in English with abstracts in English, Zulu and Sepedi / The objective of this qualitative case study was to determine the information needs of rural farmers in Bungoma County, Western Kenya. The study explored various literature on information needs of rural farmers and the information services available to them. The data were collected through face-to-face interviews with twenty lead farmers who are hosts of Farmers’ Field Schools. The findings show that farmers in Bungoma County are mostly interested in information that helps them to generate quick incomes from their agribusinesses. They access agricultural information mostly from verbal messages passed on by extension officers and local administration leaders. The farmers confessed that the information accessed from electronic sources like local FM radios is very useful in enhancing their agricultural enterprises and therefore agricultural development partners, policy makers and stakeholders in Western Kenya should use local FM radio often to disseminate information on agricultural development. The challenges encountered by the farmers in their quest for information relates to affordability. This study contributes to social change by recommending agricultural development partners, policy makers and stakeholders in Western Kenya implement programmes for reducing the distances that farmers travel to access agricultural information and the costs they incur in applying the knowledge gained from the various information channels. / Lolu cwaningo lokuthola kabanzi ngesimo belugxile ekuqaguleni izidingo kwezolwazi nokusetshenziswa kwalo kubalimi basemakhaya endaweni yaseBungoma County, esentshonalanga Kenya.

Musnik, Noémie 30 November 2012 (has links)
Assuming that workplace significantly affects information seeking and information management patterns, this study explores accessibility and management of information sources among a group of research engineers. The study explores how these engineers, who belong to the R&D entity of a major energy group, require, search and manage information sources in given professional contexts. Furthermore, it strives toidentify the contextual factors that shape information practices. This empirical study is based on a qualitativeapproach: following exploratory inquiries, semi-structured interviews and observations were conducted witha small group of actors in their proper workplace. Our integration within the team facilitated the participantobservation stance. The study provides an analytic cartography of the various components of the organizationaland informational environments whereby the activities and tasks of the above mentioned actors takeplace. A wide range of practices has been identified via interviews but also through the activities and workrhythms observed. An appreciative framework has been developed to analyze the practices of access to informationproduced and used in professional contexts; it underlines the contextual factors that may becomedriving dimensions to support an innovative perspective on information management structures. The studyattempts to provide an innovative approach for the analysis of information practices in contexts, orientedtoward the design of a facetted and collaborative information management system.

Comportamento de busca e recuperação da informação em serviços de descoberta em rede no contexto acadêmico / Behavior of information seeking and retrieval in web discovery services in the academic context / Comportamiento de búsqueda y recuperación de información en plataformas de descubrimiento en contexto académico

Pavão, Caterina Marta Groposo January 2014 (has links)
This research work aimed to develop a model of information seeking and retrieval behavior in an environment yet unexplored: the web discovery services. To this end, grounded theory methodologies were applied, which enabled the driving, tracking, and organizing of data collection. The data formed the basis of the theory and data analysis originated the concepts that were built. Data was collected during the interaction of interviewees with the web discovery service while performing tasks of information seeking and retrieval. The subjects were randomly selected from among the library users at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. The information seeking and retrieval behavior model found suggests two steps. Behavior during searching is related to the way the respondents recognize the problem, exploit the searching options and distinguish information to formulate the expression. Behavior during information retrieval is related to navigation and differentiation to obtain a list of satisfactory results. From the list of results the solution of the problem is declared by recognizing the relevance, evaluation of sources and selection of information. The proposed model was confronted with models already established. Similarities to models that aim to understand user behavior more broadly, taking into account its history, values, context and knowledge constructed from previous experiences were identified. Besides, this research intends to collaborate with the methodological aspects related to the understanding and construction of a grounded theory. It concludes that is necessary to provide greater insight, enhance understanding and provide a guide to action, with a focus on the user, to the adoption of web discovery services in university libraries. It suggest customization and training to provide users with conditions that allow them to extract the maximum possible advantage of this type of tool. Hence, mentor teachers should be equipped with certain information cultivation before they can create supportive teaching environment. This study exploit semi-structural in-depth interview with mentor teachers from elementary schools of Taipei City so as to understand their information seeking behavior, investigate how teachers make use of library resources, network resources, and social software on their preparation for teaching. Besides, it also analyze how teachers should avail information resources to conduct professional growth, help their partner teachers to enhance professional competence, and illustrate the experiences how teachers use Web 2.0 social software. As learned from the research literature, mentor teachers are mostly senior teachers, and their educational background lies beyond the level of university, considered to be of teachers equipped with various professional knowledge and abundant teaching experiences. In fact, mentor teachers are ones who are endowed with favorable competence of information cultivation, and they are able to make use of diversified channels to access teaching resources to support teaching. With regard to the search for teaching resources, mentor teachers are able to determine the convenience and accuracy of information, while Internet is reckoned to be the most often used channel in search for teaching resources by mentor teachers. In addition, various kinds of information teachers obtained from their daily life can largely, after evaluation and processing, be transformed into teaching resources. For using information resources to prepare for teaching, school library is the type that is most often used by mentor teachers, whereas teachers will also avail public libraries to search for teaching resources, with books and newspaper and magazine reckoned to be the most often used type of information. Furthermore, teachers will, as well, search for related multimedia audio-visual information to support teaching in coping with curriculum. Through network resources, they can help to shorten time spent on production of teaching materials. As for various subject-based websites, they would provide comprehensive and rich pictures, movies, and demonstration of practice and other information, which are considered to be beneficial tools to create context for diversified learning. If multimedia teaching materials from network can be used to support teaching, class instruction can be made to be vivid and lively. Through media of network, mentor teachers can work to observe their teaching among themselves and share experiences, so that when they encounter problems in teaching they can contact experts and obtain help. As Web 2.0 social software is used as auxiliary media for teaching, it can help to enhance teaching efficiency and advance learning effect for students. Suggestions at the end: 1. competent authority of education should enhance information literacy of teachers as well as application capability of technology information, and encourage mentor teachers to take part in network community so as to establish knowledge sharing platform, and develope digital collection resource to support the teaching platform needed for curriculum; 2. school library should seek for inter-institution cooperation to assist mentor teachers to make use of library resources for teaching preparation and support the system of mentor teacher; 3. mentor teachers should effectively take part in network community, and sufficiently exploit social software to support teaching.

People-seeking research: How journalists seek their sources

Hsu, Chih Wei Unknown Date (has links)
As previous studies have emphasized on journalist-source relationship for a long time, they provide a jumping-off point for this study to divert from them. In terms of traditional research subjects (politicians and public relations), most of those studies mainly focus on how journalists develop, cement, augment and repair mutual relationship with their sources. However, the question of how journalists seek for their sources has been rarely discussed. Therefore, this study attempts to turn to low-status sources (i.e. ordinary people) and examine how journalists manipulate artifacts and social networks to seek for them. This study conducted by in-depth interview and participant observation shows that the institutionalization of newspapers makes big impacts on journalists’ people-seeking behavior. At the first phase, journalists will be cultivated to form specific hypotheses for the type of sources they are seeking for. Second, it may cause ordinary people news necessary to compete with other news genres for news pages. Finally, it may also cause some of ordinary people news stories to be omitted. However, even though journalists’ people-seeking behavior is constricted to the social structure, they are still able to exercise their agency in the use of information and communication technology to extend the time of newsgathering and to ensure all potential ordinary people news will be found. Moreover, those hypotheses for the people they are seeking for are not totally controlled by journalists’ representational systems either but constituted recursively. In addition, social networks are also one of indispensable resources for journalists’ people-seeking behavior. According to research results, the factor that impacts journalists on deciding which intermediary they will ask help for is based on mutual relational characteristics. Journalists will use weak ties to access new information and strong ties as a bargain chip to negotiate with weak ties for resource exchange. In sum, during the process of people-seeking, journalists’ cognitive functions will be distributed and offloaded to the mediated resources in the situation in a cooperative way to ease the cognitive burden imposed on their brains. In addition, the usage of mediated resources also depends on the situation journalists stay in, which enables them to perceive the function of each mediated resource. All in all, journalists’ knowledge of people-seeking behavior rests on how they consider the situation and manipulate mediated resources properly to solve their tasks.
