Diagnosens dilemman : Identitet, anpassning och motstånd hos kvinnor med ADHD / The Dilemmas of Diagnosis : Identity, Adaptation and Resistance among Women with ADHD

Lassinantti, Kitty January 2014 (has links)
This thesis explores the increasing medicalization of society, the process whereby social phenomenon are transformed into medical problems. Alike the general tendency of neuropsychiatric diagnoses, the number of people with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) has increased and expanded from a boys’ diagnosis to include both adult men and women. Studies on the latter category is however scarce. The objective of the thesis is to contribute with a micro sociological and critical perspective on the effects of the biomedicalization process, by focusing women's experience of getting and living with ADHD. The empirical material consists of narrative interviews with sixteen women, diagnosed with ADHD in adulthood. The participants, age 20 to 50, were enrolled via Swedish NGOs in 2010 and 2013. The thesis resides on four analytical themes: biomedicalization, pharmaceuticalizaton, functionality and gender. It shows how diagnostics evokes processes that involve learning and using a biomedical terminology to describe and understand oneself. ADHD is, in general, depicted as diffuse, expansionary, masculine and deviant sociability and cognitivity. Unlike depression and anxiety, described as temporary and unwanted illnesses, the ADHD-diagnosis embraces the whole personality. Hence, the women find it difficult to identifying and separating ADHD from the self. Furthermore, categorizations of oneself as a ‘woman with ADHD’ imply constructions of individual and collective identity that has ideological implications, i.e. the individual narratives are related to grand narratives. These contradictory grand narratives bring about ideological dilemmas that are handled rhetorically in the women's everyday life. The masculine connotation of ADHD, for example, render the women experiencing themselves as transgressing not only femininity but also ADHD-personhood. Additionally, as social actions are attributed to the ‘ADHD brain’, the brain is portrayed as a pathological deviant and dysfunctional object for pharmaceutical intervention. Nevertheless, this discourse is also contested by the women by pointing to 1) positive aspects of the ‘ADHD-brain’ in everyday life, or 2) gender inequalities and demands of the late-modern society. Concluding, the women in this study are not only victims of their bodies or societal norms, but also agents negotiating – adapting and opposing to – expectations of how to be an ideal citizen or woman.

Towards Community Sustainability: Place Identity Formation in Ölands Skördefest

Peng, Guanhua January 2018 (has links)
While discussions on the capacity of food tourism on promoting and maintaining the sustainability of host community have recently gained interest in tourism academia, the intersection between food events, tourism and sustainability need to be explored in a greater depth. This study focuses on place identity formation and examines how Ölands Skördefest shapes local residents’ place identity. In-depth interviews conducted with business representatives and tourism department members are themed analyzed through the lend of Identity Process Theory (IPT). The results illustrate how Ölands Skördefest shapes five components of place identity, and in particular how respondents felt about distinctiveness, belonging and self-efficacy. The study offers an understanding of how Ölands Skördefest contributes to promoting community sustainability through strengthening local place identity.

We used as theoretical and methodological devices French Discourse Analysis postulates, from Michel Pecheux´s and Michel Foucault´s contributions. Specifically we focus in this research, the notions of speech, subject and production conditions from Pêcheux and of subject/power, power/knowledge, ways of subjectivity and disciplinary practices from Michel Foucault. As a methodological approach we propose the description of statements based on the proposal for the development of Foucault's archaeological method. With the theoretical-methodological support we´ve analyzed the book in order to identify the identity processes proposal of the teacher subject. We observed a discourse that takes place in certain production conditions. The enunciator subject determines the places occupied in the process of dialogue which are: the place of an enunciator who holds a scientific knowledgepsychological, that aims, through a disciplinary and pastoral power, to establish truth regimes on the subject/reader/teacher, and the reader subject, a place determined by the enunciator, as the subject of the lack, one that is lost and need guidance to act promptly in your profession. It is proposed to the teachers subjects certain disciplines that constitute ways of subjectivity, which aims to get the discursive subject in a discursive mash, in order to make it docile and useful. For this, the enunciator establishes interdiscursive relationships with the following discourses: scientific, religious, and with official discourses on education as Parameters National Curriculum (PNC), this interdiscursivity shown produce senses since an identification with what is being said as true until the intimidation, punishment for mistakes. We´ve noted that the proposal of constitution of the teacher subject in this self-help discursivity is of an individual, homogenized subject, that will revolutionize education, a kind of sweet superhero. It is a discoursivity which imposes certain disciplines and does not respect the singularities.

I didn't feel like I was alone in this journey of motherhood” : A qualitative study of the identity of first-time mothers and the importance of the parent group for creating security

Janzon, Ida, Pantzar, Anna January 2024 (has links)
When a woman has her first child, she creates a new identity as a mother. She is faced with new situations, which creates uncertainty. Previous social contexts such as work or studies are put on hold and even friendships can undergo a change. Feelings of loneliness and anxiety lead the individual to seek out others who have similar experiences. Many women find support in groups organized at the Family Centre. The purpose of this qualitative study is to understand womens´ experiences regarding their identity creation during the first time as a parent, as well as the importance of social relationships with other new parents to increase security and create less loneliness in the parental role. The study has used social psychological theories regarding, for example, the self, categorization and social comparison to interpret and understand the respondents' experiences. In the study, 10 semi-structured interviews were conducted with first-time mothers regarding their experiences of becoming a mother. The study's results show how the mother's identity develops and how the woman's belief in her own abilities is linked to the child's well-being. The child becomes part of the woman's self-image. In the parent group, the women experience a community with others in the same situation. Advice, support, thoughts and experiences are shared in an open climate, which together with the opportunity to consult staff leads to increased security and a reduced feeling of loneliness.

Our goal is to show how the ancestry is represented in the fictional of Terra sonâmbula. Therefore, we investigate identity, time, space and ancestry as modalities of human experience, worked by the speech of the characters, narrators and voices present in the narrative. We dialogue with authors like Angela Bello (1998), Irene Dias de Oliveira (2002), Ana Mafalda Leite (2003), Rita Chaves (2005), among other views on religion and ancestry, changes related to the colonial period and on the uses and customs, knowledge and techniques of African myths and rites. To explain, in a theoretical way, the presence of the sacred, the profane and questions about the myths, we have Mircea Eliade (2001, 2010, 2012); and to talk about identity and culture, we count on Homi Bhabha (2001), and Stuart Hall (2006). Besides these authors, we also dialogue with scholars who study the work of Mia Couto, with the intention of to identify answers to our questions about Terra Sonâmbula on the light of ancestry which is the subject of this work.

Adolescentes em conflito com a lei nas instituições sócio-educativas do Rio de Janeiro: identificação e discurso / Adolescents in conflict with the law in the socio-educational institutions of Rio de Janeiro: identification and speech.

André da Costa Gonçalves 06 September 2010 (has links)
This study aimed to verify, through the power relations within the CRIAAD Duque de Caxias and the influences the relationship with the drug trade may exert over young people, what are the categories of identification present in the identity formation of the adolescents who imposed socioeducational measures in DEGASE. Data was collected through focus groups with two segments of adolescents, the first aged 17-19 years, the second with adolescents aged 14-16 years. Besides the research with the two focus groups, interviews with technicians from CRIAAD were also conducted. The whole process of data collection was authorized by the Juvenile Court for Children and the Elderly in Duque de Caxias and the Paulo Freire Socio-educational Management School. This study primarily relied on the French Discourse analysis style, proposed by Michel Pêcheux, in addition to Altoe's studies on institutions that care for adolescents in conflict with the law, Foucault's study of prisons and power relations, Carlos Amorim's historical part of the emergence of Comando Vermelho and the study on the slogan, by Olivier Reboul. The survey found that there is a discourse of resistance among the adolescents, who use the category of silence, and there is a silent speech from the professionals who deal with the socioeducational measures, according to Orlandi. Such aspects give the Socioeducational instances a power relationship that has not vanished, even with the changes introduced to the system of assistance for children and adolescents

To be seen and to learn, without being seen to learn : A study of under-achievement and identity-negotiation among privileged young men in upper-secondary school

Nyström, Anne-Sofie January 2012 (has links)
In the last decade stratification within educational results has, in Sweden as in other countries, been framed as a matter of boys’ and young men’s under-achievement. The question of whether this is a problem, and if so, for whom and how to change the structure, has been discussed in research and educational policy. The aim of the thesis is to contribute to these fields and to enhance knowledge of young people’s gendered and classed identity processes, by analyzing how achievement and engagement were negotiated and given meaning in relation to young men. Previous research has primarily explored identity processes among “risk categories” or subordinated students. The objective here was to analyze how masculinity was accomplished via peer-group interactions within a rarely problematized category, through examining how upper middle-class young men identify themselves and are ascribed identities by others. The study’s design was inspired by ethnographic methodology and combined participant observation, semi-structured individual and group interviews and a background questionnaire. Identities, social categorizations (especially gender and class) and dominance-relations were thus analyzed from an actor-oriented perspective. The research participants were young men and women, age 15-16, in two school classes. The field work was conducted at, respectively, a Natural Science and a Vehicle Programme; educational settings with connotations to masculinity but significantly different in terms of class. The study enrolled a total of fifty-six students, but focus is upon the fifteen young men among the natural science students.  High achievement and under-achievement, high social and cognitive ability, and group loyalty are main themes in the study. Identity claims were analyzed in relation to the practices through which they were negotiated, e.g. self-hindrance. Similar to other research, the results emphasize the relationship between masculinity and “effortless achievement”. The concept “under-achievement” is developed as an analytical tool, by distinguishing between five dimensions.

Bengtsson, Emma January 2018 (has links)
This study investigates the relationship between the individual and their monthly donation to the INGO Amnesty International Sweden as a process of identity stimulation. Problematizing how consuming a brand whichdoes not give anything concrete back to the individual communicates through core values in order to strengthen identity. The study uses theories from Zygmunt Bauman, Sidney Levy, Lilie Chouliaraki and Ronald E. Anderson. According to research for the relationship between the individual and brand there has been a shift where the individual choses brands from other parameters than function, rather this is made from its representation. Therefore consuming brands is an expression for identity. Furthermore research about charity organizations states that there has been a shift in how they communicate and affect individuals’ need to reduce suffering - identity stimulation - as a consequence of neoliberalism. The study is constructed through a qualitative methodology that collects empirical data from responsive- and flexible deep interviews, with respondents who donates monthly to Amnesty International Sweden and are in the age gap between 18-30 years old. The study does not aim for a generalization of the result, rather it investigates how identity can be stimulated through Amnesty International Sweden using concepts as self-oriented, others-oriented and reduce suffering. The result proves what have been stated by former theories, were the relationship between the individual and brand functions as an identity stimulation through different aspects such as identification and distance, the individual as a product and ways to materialize this. However, there has been a clear shift in the individuals awareness of online and offline behaviour which affects how they present themselves as a product. As pointed out earlier by theories from Bauman and Levy, the resultemphasizesthat the individual consumes a brand that represents themselves and strengthens their identity individually and to their social environment. Lastly, the study discuss its result of new individual behavior online and offline as a consequence of neoliberalism and how research within media- and communication studies can further help us understand how communication technology and political forces can affect each other in regards of individual behaviour. The study and its result is situated in the junction between the digital communicative sphere and constant political changes.

Pereira, Reinaldo Arruda 10 November 2011 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-08-03T12:18:51Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Reinaldo Arruda Pereira.pdf: 2062538 bytes, checksum: f1b349f60f3d4a06096428740f526cd4 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2011-11-10 / The religious diversity in Brazil in the second half of the twentieth century became progressive and moved at enormous speed. Given that, the process of diversification and pluralism of the Brazilian religious field has been considered in the scenario nowadays, creating new ways of thinking and of expressing religious faith. During that time, among the Baptists living in Belo Horizonte, specifically in the neighborhood called Lagoinha; a new religious organization emerged, the so-called Lagoinha Baptist Church (IBL). In its early days, even though carrying "the Baptist name", this new church took a very singular dynamic form of church liturgy known as " revival/awakening" or "charismatic," whose religious message and practice emphasized and highlighted the manifestation of "spiritual gifts" and experiential "awakening " as the evidence of" baptism in the Holy Spirit. " per se. As a result, there were reactions from the traditional Baptists because the IBL manifestations were deemed as similarly closed to another religious movement so-called Pentecostalism, which differs from those practices adopted by the Baptists from Minas Gerais, deemed as historic and traditional. As result of this new church engagement to Revivalism/Awakening and charismatic practices, the IBL achieved theological, organizational and administrative independence and autonomy. Consequently, the IBL was excluded from the list of cooperating and co-partners Baptist churches of the Brazilian & Mineira Baptist Convention. This church took a religious structure characterized by Revivalism and traces of the Pentecostalism movement within the Baptist denomination. These new traces and paradigms of the IBL were chosen to be analyzed in this paper. However, this thesis takes into account sociological studies regarding religion per se. In other words, the thesis wants to explore how the changes that occurred at IBL are intrinsically correlated to theories of cultural and socio-cultural symbolism. That is to say IBL history and identity are related to the processes of urbanization and modernization of society, which fostered the emergence of more flexible, adaptable and in constant changes of religious forms. Therefore, from this correlation we would like to postulate that the IBL is a religious organization, hybrid, changeable/adjustable, and "broadcasted" with an identity that makes and remakes it, as IBL is being adjusted to a kind of culture that is at the same time, urban, evangelical, technological, broadcasted and well advertised.
