A breath of fresh air : breathing stories of the lived experiences of asthma and sporting embodimentOwton, Helen Louise January 2012 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to conduct an investigation of the lived experiences of asthma and sporting embodiment in non-elite sportspeople of different ages and levels of ability, involved in a range of sports. Asthma is characterised as a breathing disorder and the aim of this research is to add to embodied literature by providing ‘fleshy’ realities of the moving, sweating, sensuous sporting body, which holds meanings, purposes and interests for people who experience sport with asthma. Breathing is not only a physiological process, but it is also cultural and people may deal with their asthma symptoms in ways that reflect cultural attitudes embedded in sport. This qualitative study addresses five exploratory questions: 1) How do sportspeople experience asthma? 2) How do sportspeople negotiate their asthma and sporting identities? 3) How do emotional dimensions play a role in sportspeople’s asthma and sporting experiences? 4) How do perceptions of environment and illness shape one another by examining the relationship between the body, the self and environment? 5) What is the role of trauma in sportspeople with asthma? 6) How do key senses (sound) play a role in sportspeople’s asthma and embodied sporting experiences? Through a symbolic-interactionsist and phenomenological-inspired approach, this research places emphasis on the mind-body-self nexus in relation to sensory experiences with a focus upon the centrality of the ‘visceral’ body in the relationship between self-consciousness and the self. A bodily disruption (e.g., asthmatic attack) is likely to heighten awareness of the body-self and contingency and may amplify how sportspeople listen to their own embodied selves when engaged in sporting action. Therefore, sportspeople may become even more acutely aware of, and attuned to, their breathing in ways that link the physiological, the psychological, the social and the environment. This may lead to a permanent re-ordering/negotiation of identities (e.g., athletic identity - asthma identity) through ‘emotion work’ and ‘somatic (auditory) work’ in which a concern with the body is central. The findings are represented as a typology consisting of Conformers, Contesters and Creators, which may be used as a framework to assist health care and sporting professionals in developing more appropriate and effective rehabilitation regimes for sportspeople, in order to improve the quality of treatment and outcomes.

Previous issue date: 2013-06-28 / This is a qualitative research which aimed to study the construction of the identity of the pedagogical coordinator in the public school system of Cubatão. The study included 22 coordinators, originating from their network teaching, working in day care centers, children's education I and II, I and II school and / or Education for Youth and Adults. The question that guided this research problem was how the coordinators of the public schools of Cubatão build their professional identity. Data collection was conducted through a questionnaire with exploratory intentions, semi-structured interviews and documentary analysis focusing on the elements and processes that have contributed and contribute to this professional identity construction. Entering on the subjectivity field presented by subjects proved essential to answer the proposition presented and thus seek the meanings that attach to be, being, doing and feeling, for the task they daily undertake to coordinate the teaching in school. The transition from raw data to organized data was held from the content analysis enunciated by Bardin (2011) and validated by means of triangulation in perspective Minayo (1999). To support the analysis of thematic coordination pedagogical used the authors: Franco (2005, 2007, 2008, 2012) Fusari (1992.1997) and Placco (2006, 2008, 2011, 2012), for the issue of training, professionalization identity and teaching / professional: Franco (2007, 2008, 2012), Franco and Ghedin (2011), Abdalla (2006), Libâneo (2007, 2008), Pinto (2011), Freire (2002, 2011, 2012), Sacristan (2000), Silva (1996), Contreras (2012), Pimenta (2007, 2012) and Tardif (2009, 2012). The resumption of the history of education and teaching was carried out in theoretical: Romanelli (2012) and Saviani (2008), and to support the pedagogy as science education: Franco (2008), Pimenta (2012) and Libâneo (2008). As a result of this investigation, it was found that the identity construction of the pedagogical coordinator in question is happening in the face of everyday difficulties mentioned by the subjects, which constituted the categories of this research, namely resistance, accumulation and loneliness. These, in turn, the view expressed in this research represent difficulties to overcome in the personal, collective and institutional framework for these professionals may perceive school teacher, based on knowledge of pedagogy. The data collected suggests that for it happening, there have to be spaces and institutional actions, occasioned by the Education Department, highlighting the effective collective work at schools.

Constant technological, economic and sociocultural change in today’s world has created a climate of increased competition, and staying one step ahead requires companies to invest in innovation. A deeper analysis of innovation and creativity reveals the necessity of developing human capital through knowledge transfers. In other words, achieving sustainable corporate success depends on investiments in personnel.
Thesis aims to combine the subject matters of Human Resources and Corporate Social Responsibility in order to strategize more effectively for positive economic and social outcomes. The study will address the interrelation between the praxis of Human Resources, which focuses on the development of personnel, with the notion of internal social responsibility, a concept little explored in either the academic literature or civil
society organizations.
This approach emphasizes an analysis of workplace relationships, including the identification of the key actors, forms of management, and wider organizational structure, that are conducive to an empowering environment for the promotion of network relations, knowledge sharing and harnessing creative human potential.
Beyond highlighting the centrality of people to corporate success, the research also brings to light the relevance of the company as a principal institution in the formation of
human identity today.
Through literature review and field research – using as methodology a case study from the department of customer services at Ampla Energia e Serviços SA – the project examines the intersection between Human Resources and Corporate Social Responsibility and the competitive advantages of combining these two themes.

The Lived Experiences of Women in Christian Ministry in CanadaSteeves, Kathleen 11 1900 (has links)
The entrance of women into ordained ministry positions is a relatively new phenomenon in the North American Christian church, and has yet to be given adequate scholarly attention. This thesis probes the experiences of several pioneering women, presenting both the substantial and theoretical contributions emerging from a qualitative study of female pastors ministering in Protestant congregations across Canada. Data collection and analysis were approached through the lens of symbolic interactionism and grounded theory. The main findings emerging from 44 qualitative, in-depth interviews have been organized into three distinct papers to constitute a sandwich dissertation. The first paper outlines how some women experience a “call” to ministry and how this change in trajectory impacts their identity and constructions of the past, while the second two papers address different facets of performing the pastoral role once within it. Paper 2 explores the dilemmas women encounter in the area of clothing and appearances, a concern many of the women identified as influencing their performance of the pastoral role. Paper 3 explores in greater depth the ways women feel they perform the pastoral role differently than their male counterparts, and raises questions about the impact this may have on changing the role in the future. Taken together, the three papers contribute to a broad range of debates in the theoretical literature about key facets of the human experience, including: changing career trajectories, role making and performance of self, and microlevel influences on institutional change. The dissertation also encourages a new direction for sociological research – human interactions with the divine. / Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) / This thesis investigates what it is like to be a female pastor in the Christian church in Canada, as women have only recently been able to be fully ordained in most Protestant denominations. Three themes are explored: (1) how women decide to enter into Christian ministry, (2) how they navigate dilemmas around clothing in the pastoral role, and (3) how they feel they do pastoral ministry differently than their male counterparts. On a more theoretical level, this thesis also helps us understand the experiences of women entering traditionally male occupations, illuminating how they – and perhaps anyone who undergoes a career transition – navigate changes in work roles and identities, how clothing can help them achieve legitimacy in a role, and how women may be changing the professions they enter into in large numbers by doing their work differently.

This thesis analyzes how the process of professional identity building takes place and, in particular, how it takes place in the context of precarious recognition by peers and superiors at work. Professional identity is a process that begins at the end of one’s studies, goes on throughout the period one faces labor relations, environment and market, and makes possible the building of a personal image that individuals want to present. By analyzing the professional’s process of socialization in labor relations, we can not only understand the process of professional identity building, but also approach the concept of profession in our days. By carrying out such an analysis, we see the building of identity at work, which is based on three elements – recognition, autonomy and cooperation at work – and which gives individuals a chance to return to themselves to feel included in peer circles. To analyze the process of professional identity building we choose to add a fourth element, professional knowledge, which, together with the other elements aforementioned, is an axe of this thesis. The empirical material source of this thesis was professional physiotherapists working at Intensive Care Units (ICUs), due to their frequently indefinite attributions and contributions to the work, in comparison to physicians’ work, for example. The methodology used in this thesis is based on a qualitative approach, with semi-structured questionnaires which were handed out to 20 physiotherapists, 17 physicians and 17 nurses working at 14 ICUs in Porto Alegre in 2009, as well as on direct observation of two ICUs. The content analysis of the data collected was used to understand the empirical material associated with the theory references. As an outcome of this study, we view the role of the identity at work building process as a stepping stone to professional identity building. Besides, this study highlights how important professional knowledge, characterized by scientific, contextual and reflexive knowledge, is as a condition for workers to build a stable professional identity. By being impossible for individuals to build a stable identity at work due to precarious recognition at work, we realize how difficult it is for them to gain visibility and build professional knowledge at labor relations. Such a difficulty tends to compromise professional identity building.
