"Enough! or too much" : forms of textual excess in Blake, Wordsworth, Coleridge and De Quincey

Kellett, Lucy January 2016 (has links)
My thesis explores the potential and the peril of Romantic literature's increasingly complex forms through a close comparative study of the works of William Blake, William Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor Coleridge and Thomas De Quincey. These writers exemplify the Romantic predicament of how to make vision manifest – how to communicate one's imaginative and intellectual expansiveness without diminishing it. They sought different strategies for increasing the capacity of literary form, ostensibly in the hope of communicating more: clarifying meaning, increasing accessibility and intensifying original experience. But textual expansion – materially, stylistically and intellectually – often threatens more opportunities for confused and partial meanings to proliferate, overwhelming the reader by dividing texts and undermining attempts at coherent thought. Expansion thus becomes excess, with all its worrying associations of superfluity. To further complicate matters, Burke's influential tenet of the Sublime makes a virtue out of excess and obscurity, raising the problematic spectre of deliberately confused/confusing texts that embody an aesthetic of incomprehension. I explore these paradoxes through four types of 'textual excess' demonstrated by the writers under discussion: firstly, the tension between poetry and prose adjuncts, such as prefaces and notes, in Wordsworth and Coleridge; secondly, De Quincey's indulgent verbosity and struggle to control the freeing shapelessness of prose; thirdly, Wordsworth's and De Quincey's parallel experiences of revision as both uncontrollably diffusive and statically concentrated; and lastly, Blake's more deliberate, systematic attempt to enact a literary Sublime in which the reader is forced out of passivity by the competing demands of verbal and visual media. All are motivated and thwarted in varying degrees by their anxious preoccupation with saying "Enough", and the difficulty of determining when this becomes “Too much”. These authorial dilemmas also incorporate larger concerns with man's (over)ambition at a time of rapid and unprecedented economic, social and intellectual acceleration from the Enlightenment to industrialism. The fear that the concept and process of 'progress', or 'improvement', marks deficiency rather than fulfilment haunts Romantic writers.

Utveckling av ett aktivt fiskedrag / Design and development of an active fishing lure

Westlund, Johan January 2019 (has links)
The fishermen are constantly looking for something new. As a company, specialized in this profession, it is necessary to be able to offer the newest thing within fishing. A new kind of fishing lure that creates attention among the fish is an innovative new and welcomed product among fishermen’s. The thesis work is carried out as a project with a project plan containing a time chart, risk management, organization and file management. The phases of the project consist of planning, research, product specification, concept generation, evaluation, construction, design and patent application. The concept was developed with a product specification in mind. This specification is a list of the users needs and preferences, as well as requirements from the cooperation partner. The research focused on the users need, to determine what the customer really wants. The result from the research was that the user wants something innovative and easy to use. Idea generation utilized tools like 6-3-5, generating entire concepts as well as brainstorming. These tools were used in concept generation, but also during the work with the patent applications. The first mentioned tool was used to generate possibilities for how and what the product will do. The second mentioned tool was used to identify what those within this profession think would be a successful fishing lure. The third tool was used to find potential solutions for a specific issue. Evaluation of the ideas resulted in nine different kinds of concepts. The final concept consists of a fishing lure head (jig head) with implemented module that illuminates when in contact with water. This final decision was made after presentation and discussion with the partner. With a patent application, the project plan and the report were corrected to version 2.0. Sketches were frequently used to through the project to test ideas and combinations. Prototypes of the chosen concept were made to obtain additional information on design and function.

Développement et caractérisation de nouveaux procédés de passivation pour les capteurs d'images CMOS / Development and characterization of new passivation processes for CMOS images sensors

Ait Fqir Ali, Fatima Zahra 01 October 2013 (has links)
Les résultats sur lot électrique ont montré un très faible niveau de Idark supplantant la référence en vigueur / In order to maintain or enhance the electro-optical performances while decreasing the pixel size, advanced CMOS Image Sensors (CIS) requires the implementation of new architectures. For this purpose, deep trenches for pixel isolation (DTI) and backside illumination (BSI) have been introduced as ones of the most promising candidates. The major challenge of these architectures is the high dark current level (Idark) due to the generation/recombination centers present at both, DTI sidewalls and backside surfaces. Therefore, the creation of very shallow doped junctions at these surfaces reducing Idark and further crosstalk by drifting the photo-generated carriers to the photodiode region appears as key process step for introducing these architectures. For the backside surface passivation, a very shallow doped layer can be achieved by low-energy implantation followed by very short and localized heating provided by pulsed laser annealing (PLA). In the melt regime, box-shaped profiles with activation rates close to 100% and excellent crystalline quality have been achieved. The non-melt regime shows some potential, especially for multiple pulse conditions. In the optimal process conditions, very low level of Idark comparable to the standard reference has been achieved. In the other side, the passivation of DTI sidewalls has been performed by in-situ doped Epitaxy. Deposited layers with good uniformity and doping conformity all along the DTI cavity have been achieved. The electrical results show Idark values lower than the standard reference

Figures et motifs des croisades : étude des manuscrits de l'Histoire ancienne jusqu'à César, Saint-Jean-d'Acre, 1260-1291 / Illuminated Manuscripts of the Crusades : the Histoire Ancienne jusqu’à César, Saint Jean d’Acre, 1260-1291

Maraszak, Emilie 12 October 2013 (has links)
The Crusader States have created a society in the Holy Land developing a syncretic art at the crossroads of Latin, Byzantine and Arabic worlds. In addition to religious and military architecture, manuscripts are also evidences of a cosmopolitan Levantine culture. The study of Crusader Art has shown that the painting of manuscripts was revived at Acre in the early 1250’s, after Louis XI’s stay in the Middle East. Secular manuscripts written mostly in Old French became popular, as well as new historical literature. The most popular examples were the Histoire d’Outremer by William of Tyre and the Histoire Ancienne jusqu’à César. This illustrated text was first composed in France for Roger de Lille and brought to the Crusader East in the mid-thirteenth century. Frankish aristocracy and crusader illuminators have created a cycle of miniatures in order to integrate their images in the cosmopolitan Crusader Art. Artistic choices have then come to light and been defined as conscious choices to offer works that represent the best of the Frankish culture of Acre and integrate them in an almost two centuries old artistic tradition : the borrowing from Western and Oriental artistic traditions in order to create their miniatures, the revelation of heroes linked to the Holy Land and the Franks, and sometimes the representation of their Oriental environment. This process of personalization and multicultural content, set within the context of the cultural society of Saint Jean d’Acre at the end of the thirteenth century, are the evidences of the remarkable artistic acculturation of Frankish society in the Holy Land, at the crossroads of the West and the Near East.

The collection comprises nine illuminated manuscript books; however, only the items produced in the second half of the 15th century are identified in this work. The provenance of four of these books is the Portuguese Royal Library – Casa do Infantado, which was transferred to Brazil in 1808, together with Portugal’s Royal family, thus becoming the core of the Brazilian National Library. The first part of the monograph includes theoretical considerations and situates the period in which the books were created, also putting in relief their importance, both to medieval society and to the evolution of devotions. A brief history of the National Library and information related of the catalogue’s construction are also presented. The second part of the monograph presents the catalogue itself, where the books are described according to intenational rules, enabling access, diffusion and data interchanging, thus valuing and promoting the preservation of these cultural and patrimonial assets.

Pamětní kniha slanečkářů na Novém Městě pražském / Commemorative book of herring sellers in the Prague New Town

Barabášová, Magda January 2021 (has links)
The topic of this diploma thesis is the Commemorative Book of Prague Nydrlak, whose origins date back to the 17th century in the Prague New Town. The records in the book were written mainly by the merchants who travelled to Prague to trade. Most of those merchants were most likely involved in the international trade with marine fish that were imported from the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. Due to the representative role of commemorative books, the majority of the merchants received their illuminations from professional artists. The introductory chapters of the thesis describe contemporary practice of business of the given period, specifics of Nydrlak in the context of the practice, the commemorative book culture of the 16th and 17th century, but also the fortunes of Nydrlak before its depositing into the Prague City Archives. A pivotal part of the paper is dedicated to the merchants themselves who would left some information about their lives in the book. Based on this source and several other archival documents, the thesis assesses the confessional, societal, regional, and proprietary stratification of the community that was assembled around Prague Nydrlak.

The context, purpose, and dissemination of legendary genealogies in northern England and Iceland, c.1120-c.1241

Lunga, Peter Sigurdson January 2018 (has links)
The thesis is a comparative and multidisciplinary study of legendary genealogies in the historical writing of northern England and Iceland c. 1120 – c. 1241. Historical writing was produced in abundance over this period in both areas and the frequent contact between England and Scandinavia, as well as shared use of early medieval insular sources make them especially suitable for comparison. The Viking invasions and settlement in England had a significant impact on English culture, language and literature and changed attitudes to their own legendary past. The Danish conquest of England in the early eleventh-century also brought the insular and Scandinavian worlds closer together, and even after the Norman Conquest in 1066, England and Scandinavia engaged in scholarly and textual exchange The theoretical framework for the thesis combines approaches from religious history, art history, political history, literature history and gender history. The main research questions of the thesis consider the dissemination, development, and purpose of legendary genealogies. The sources are a collection of Durham related manuscripts with illuminations of the pagan god Woden (c. 1120–88) in two historical works De Primo Saxonum Aduentu and De Gestis Regum; Genealogia Regum Anglorum (Rievaulx, 1153x54) by Aelred of Rievaulx; two works attributed to Snorri Sturluson’s Prose Edda (Iceland, 1220s) and Heimskringla (Iceland, 1225x35). Common to the sources is the inclusion of genealogies that stretch from legendary generations to living individuals at the time of writing. Thus, genealogies connected dynasties and civilisations in mutual descent from pagan, Trojan and biblical ancestors. By analysing textual dissemination as well as political contexts, literary patronage and mechanisms in legitimisation of power, the thesis address amalgamations of origin myths, the use and significance euhemerised pagan gods, and female generations in genealogies.
